Grand Hotel Oriente - Naples

Location is great. We were able to walk to most of the major sites in Naples comfortably. Big issue was the air conditioning, or more accurately, the lack of it. We stayed in the hotel in October (temperature in the 70's F during the days and low 60's F at night). Room on the first night got up to about 80 F and we called to complain (in Italian, by […] a native speaker). They said they would fix it. Twice. Never happened. Slept in the birthday suit all night (and not for romantic reasons!) Second night, same thing, and again told them that nothing was coming out of the A/C vent. Were told again, it would be taken care of. Once it hit 83F, another angry call was made (wife having trouble with asthma) and we were immediately moved across the hall to a different room. A/C worked just fine in that room and we slept comfortably the rest of the of time there. IN SUMMARY: great location, pleasant people at front desk, but they refuse to believe you when you tell them the A/C isn't working despite multiple attempts. Read more

Naples needs cleaning. The hotel neighbourhood is not inviting . One can walk around during the dya tme but it could become somewaht foreboding at dark. It is vryu close to thehistorical centre so in three/four hours one can see the main sites.

The location of the hotel is great if you want to be near the shopping districts of Via Toledo and Via Chiaia, as well as Teatro San Carlo, the funiculare, and the historic Spaccanapoli. A good hotel with a pretty nice location. Most of the sites and interesting neighbourhoods in the city are within a walking distance. A lot of options to eat out are also near by. Not far off from the station by taxi, but would suggest to avoid rush hours as the normal 6-8 min ride becomes 30 mins or more. A good location, close to shops and Metro and walking distance to the sea and tourist areas and free, fastish Internet.. Hotel is obviously oldish. Perfect location and friendly staff. Breakfast is very good and it will soon be right next to a metro stop. Yes, Naples is a little rough around the edges, but if you want a nice sanctuary away from the scooter madness this is your place. Parking is good, but a little expensive.

Clean and quiet rooms and neighborhood. Free WIFI wiht reasonable speed. Limited restuarant hours and no restaurants in the area. Only take out and snack shop (panini). The only inconvenience was no one could figure out the light switches that conrolled which electrical outlet. So it took three visits to figure out which to use for the computer and […] which to use for a reading light by the computer. Very convenient to the boat services to Capri and other coastal areas. Bus service is also available from the same area but hard to find where to buy tickets and where the bus staging area is located. It's just a designated area the parking lot. One interesting site to visit was St Elmo's castle with great views of the city and Mt Vesuvius. If one is into old castels it was interesting to wander around. Learn to use the funicolare (cable cars) and save walking up steep hills. The Metro is very old. Not particularly inviting but day time rides seemed safe. Read more

One word of caution when booking tours from the hotel, (they use Worldtours) make sure you know exactly what is included in your tour and how payment will be made before you leave on your tour. When we paid with a credit card we were told there was an extra % charge which we didn't know about. We were told lunch was included and it wasn't, but for a special deal the driver could get us lunch and then he wanted us to pay him separately in cash at the end of the tour. I thoroughly recommend this hotel. The Multilingual staff were exceptionally helpful and informative. I couldn't think of a better location for a hotel in Naples. You're a 10 minute walk away from the bay (breath taking scenery) and a 15 minute walk away from the old town (excellent authentic food). You are also a 15 minute walk away from the boat […] port (connections to Capri, Ischia), and a 20 minute walk away from the train station (Sorrento, Pompei, Meta Beach). You're also within minutes from the main strip which can be helpful to locate the hotel and great for shops. You're a 20 to 25 euro taxi drive to the airport which can take around 20 minutes and also close to the many museums. I stayed for six nights as part of a work trip w some leisure. The say at the hotel was adequate. The location is good and the neighbourhood is fine. Close to the Spanish quarter and not far from central areas in the city. Major problem was that i had to change rooms twice (a record?) before getting a reasonable one. Having asked to change rooms, i was met with some reluctance, but at the end, i was moved. Reading previous reviews I picked this hotel mostly for its location, which is handy for the port, and in a pleasant location, by Naple's standards. The railway is a bit of a walk and the metro is still not open (July 2012) but buses quite handy The nice surprise was that the room was of a good standard and the food, staff, and other parts of the hotel […] were also good. There is ongoing refurbishment so I can only hope it gets better. Customer services was good. The only niggles were that the Air Con struggled (though we were there during a 34 degree heat wave, and as many have reported, the Wi-Fi is a bit troublesome. Yes you will be able to surf and check e-mails from your room, but you have to log on everytime you start and every other day the token stops working for some reason meaning another trip to reception. Plenty have people have commented on this and it is a shame the hotel has not changed service provider as a result of this feedback or hassled reception staff. Bei diesem Hotel scheinen die besten Tage längst der Vergangenheit anzugehören. Die Zimmer sind schmuddelig, verschimmelt und schmutzig. Die Klimaanalge funktioniert nicht. Es stinkt fürchterlich. Die Betten sind durchgelegen und schädigen bereits die Wirbelsäule. Wir können dieses Hotel in keinem Fall weiterempfehlen.
