We spent six nights at Marin Lodge this trip. We had previously stayed there about six months ago and were very pleased with the facilities. There is some renovation going on that will add a new lobby and breakfast area and a couple more rooms, so we look forward to that on our next visit to San Rafael. The only issues we had during our stay was with […] regulating the temperature of the room, and there was construction going on over our heads by 8 a.m. some mornings. . All in all the Marin Lodge is a great place to stay in San Rafael well within walking distance of the downtown area. We felt very safe in this residential area. "good hotel in Marin for the money"
This is a nice clean hotel. The furnishings are pleasant and it is very reasonably priced for Marin. IT is easy to get on the freeway from here, and see the sights. It is a much better area than Francisco Blvd or downtown San Rafael. IT is a not a very upscale area and it does have an alcohol or drug rehab center nearby, but I see that as a plus as […] compared to the other areas with inexpensive hotels. It is well maintained. I always put my personal friends who are not wealthy in this hotel. I have heard some stories once in a while about some of the tenants which was that they may have been drug addicts who talked outside in the parking lot too long in the evening, but I have not personally witnessed this. IN general everyone who has stayed here that I know of, thought it was a nice place. It is not fancy but is very good for the money. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The Marin Lodge is an affordable, comfortable hotel. It is very convenient to locations in San Rafael, is in an environment that is acceptably quiet even for one who is sensitive to that, and the rooms are of good quality. I have stayed in much more expensive hotels in the area that were of no better quality.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best Hotel for the money"
This is a good hotel for the money. The neighborhood is not very good, but it is much better than the canal District and the hotel is the best around for the price. Periodically, there are some not so great people hanging around, but most of the time it is fine. It is the best hotel for the money in Marin.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Excellent value for money"
We needed a cheap place to stay on our road trip, and this was perfect. The room was nice, and perfectly clean, and for the price, it really was great. Marin Lodge doesn't include breakfast, but it's only a few minutes drive from the center of San Rafael, so getting something to eat somewhere else is easy enough.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Terrible Service, Nicest 2-Star Rooms Ever"
This is a tiny little 2-star road motel with just about the nicest rooms you could imagine. It's bright and cheerful inside, very clean, and obviously recently renovated. Unfortunately the owners are particularly inflexible about seemingly silly things. I was sharing the room with a business assistant who would arrive and check-in before I did. When […] I arrived and asked to have them put the final charges on my own card, they flat refused. I still can't figure out what the big deal was, but that doesn't change the fact that the rooms are very nice for such an inexpensive stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We have stayed in many motels across our country and none can compare to our recent stay of 5 nights at Colonial Inn. The owners went above and beyond in seeing that our needs were met and the room was large, the beds were very comfortable and spotlessly clean through out, microwave and refrigerator were new. The motel is quiet and secluded and we felt […] 100% safe and secure at all times. I would recommend Colonial Inn to anyone who wants a clean, safe and quite place to stay at a price that is well below other motels in the area. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Fairly close to Domincan University"
Overall, we were very pleased with our room. Our only complaint was that there was no alarm clock. It was late when we discovered this or we would have requested one or requested a wake up call. Our hosts were very accomodating and we had a pleasant stay. This hotel is fairly close to Dominican University.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great place at a great price"
The rooms look like they were recently renovated, so we enjoyed the place and especially liked the ceiling fan.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Near highway and downtown San Rafawel"
Very nice, quiet place. Bed was super comfortable and warm. Shower is walk in, very big. Decorations tasteful. Management has put a lot of time into this place. A gem for a roadside motel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"An Excellent Choice"
Very clean and comfortable. Minimal amenities, great value. This is the place for people who want a simple, clean, spacious room for a stay in the San Rafael-Sonoma area. It's an old-style independent motel recently redone with modern interior.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This hotel was nothing like the pictures EXCEPT for the outside. The bathroom is SO small that you cannot even turn around in it & there are no electrical outlets to even plug in your hair dryer. There was also Black Mold on the bathroom ceiling & when I called maintenance they told me they would call me back in my room & of course they Never did. It […] is so disappointing when all you have to rely on is the pictures on a website to only arrive & have it be a DIVE...I HATE THAT!!!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"The good, the bad and the ugly."
i personally had a great stay but my brother stayed at the same place and he got a completely different room than i did. i mean talk about night and day. my room was clean, comfortable and modern while my brothers was dirty, muggy, ugly and just all around bad. i hope they are in a remodel because if every room looked like mine than they would be have […] a 5 of 5 rating from everyone that stayed there. "Nice out-of-the-way place to stay"
This was our 2nd stay at the Colonial Inn. It continues to be a comfortable Inn, convenient to Marin activities. We're willing to stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
...also not very clean, wouldn't take my shoes off. Coffee pot rusty, smell of smoke in non-smoke room (reported), shower was like a firing line (please, mgmt, a new shower head for the peeps)! Mgmt = friendly. Wireless = barely detectable and not sufficient/acceptable for uploading/downloading files.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Helt okay i lugn miljö"
"Great room and coffee"
08/25/14 Teresa M Pleasanton, California, United States
Room is designed well. Lots of mirriors and counter space. Bathroom very modern. Lots of lights in the room and a ceiling fan with remote. The free lobby coffee in the morning was the best coffee I have ever had at a hotel. Usually (even at the +$300 a night hotels) the lobby coffee is weak. Their coffee was great! We would definitely stay here again.

We arrived on August 3, and we were pleased with the reception of the managers. On August 4, we reported that the sink was stopped up. Before we left around 10:00 A.M., I told the male manager that we would be gone for the rest of the day so that they would have time to fix the sink and clean the room. When we returned that night, nothing had been done. On the morning of August 5, we were awakened at 7:00 A.M. by pounding next door. They were apparently doing construction in that room. The manager agreed to give us a 15% discount on the two nights for our trouble. He also stated that he would give us a 50% discount on our next room which was scheduled for August 8. When we arrived on the 8th, he rescinded this offer and wanted full price. When we complained that the internet wasn't working, he offered a free night. However, when I subsequently saw his wife in the office, her response in a whiny voice was "Do you think that this is fair?: She repeated this complaint at least twice. We will not return to this facility. Richard Halpern
"Perfect place to stay! Loved every moment and didn't want to leave"
08/19/14 Alex_123654 London
We loved everything about this place! It was recently renovated, all white washed walls, new furniture, very pretty and cozy. The bedding was very luxury, we had a great rest. We stayed there before our trip to San Francisco (notorious for horrible hotels) and were very pleased with out choice. It's easy to find (just off the highway, but not noisy at all), the receptionist was really nice too. San Rafael is not a massive tourist attraction, so there is not much to do there as such, but like I said, you can use it as a stopover before SanFrannie. If you want to have a meal/shop around/watch a movie in the evening, go to Northgate shopping mall. It's not far from the hotel.

I stayed at the Marin Lodge during move-in weekend for Sonoma State University. We didn't book or usual hotel in Rohnert Park in time and they were sold out. I am very picky about where I stay so I did a lot of research for a decent hotel or motel within driving distance of the university, and this one was only 30 minutes away. I found great reviews of Marin Lodge, and the photos showed a lovely room that I hoped would be comfortable (and an accurate representation of all of the rooms) for our stay. When we checked in, we were greeted by a very friendly and sweet woman at the desk, I think her name was Lynette. She was welcoming and sweet, and offered us complimentary bottled water or soda. In this day and age, it's shocking to get anything free! She gave us room keys with the free wifi code, and I was able to park directly in front of the room...easy to unload luggage. I was so happy to see that the room was exactly like the photos. Everything was newer, carpet was new and clean, bathroom had been remodeled and was clean. Beds were comfortable and we loved the huge room. Check out was a breeze. It is a motel right off the road so there is a bit of traffic noise but not terribly bad. Aside from that, it was a wonderful place to stay with great customer service and I definitely plan on staying here again when I visit my daughter at school.

I didn't know what to expect since we only saw it online. We booked a room to stay on our first night and our last night in CA. We were pleasantly surprised by the outside of the place, as it looked like it was well kept. The young lady inside at the desk was wonderful and even walked us to our room. The room was perfect (very clean), had a great bed, fridge, microwave, relaxing chair, and nice shower (no tub). We had good pressure in the shower too! We paid upfront, so in the morning, we just left our keys in the room and left early. No problem (figured they would tell us on our way back through if there was!). Again, the young man this time on our return was helpful. We would stay there again if we are in the San Francisco area. Directions to their place were good also.

I had the pleasure of staying at this hotel for a few days last June and I loved it. It is a great location, pretty good internet and the I loved the HUGE room and the comfy chair. For the price it is fantastic and would highly recommend staying at the Marin Lodge!
"Amazing gem of a lodge! "

I cannot rave enough about this place! It's superb! We stayed one night after passing through San Francisco, and I'm so glad we found this place. :) The exterior is adorable - vine covered, which gives it a cozy feel. Our room was sensational - it was very large, with updated and fab furnishings, VERY clean, and exquisite decorations. I could go on and on about how much I loved this room. And the best part? The cost. For less than a hundred dollars, we got a room that was so much better than a $300+ hotel. You can't beat it! The staff was very kind, as well. There are complementary bottled water, sodas, and coffee, and plump muffins for breakfast. I cannot stress this enough - this lodge is by far the best my family has ever stayed in, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. You will not be disappointed.
"Very decent choice for price category!"

Stayed for one night as an alternative to the very pricey SF hotels, it was easy to find and the room was clean and comfortable. As a guest, you can see some rooms are under renovation but that didn't impact our short stay. San Rafael is a nice community and the area where the hotel is located is semi residential but decent. We were offered complimentary water, soda, morning fare-muffins, fruit and good coffee. Would stay again.
My wife and I stayed here while visiting San Francisco. Short 30min or so drive and considerably cheaper than the hotels closer the city. Spacious rooms. Wifi worked well. Fridge and microwave. Took awhile to get hot water but otherwise showers had good pressure. Beautiful updates bathrooms and showers. Bed was comfortable. Quiet and safe. Aside from lacking a pool, we enjoyed our stay there. Highly recommend it if visiting the area and on a budget.

Convenient location to Napa. San Raphael is an awesome place to visit also. But due to recent renovations not everything in the room was functioning and there were no extra sheets or blankets even though the staff indicated there were. The staff, however, was very friendly and accommodating. I would recommend this location, since it is affordable and convenient.
