We spent six nights at Marin Lodge this trip. We had previously stayed there about six months ago and were very pleased with the facilities. There is some renovation going on that will add a new lobby and breakfast area and a couple more rooms, so we look forward to that on our next visit to San Rafael. The only issues we had during our stay was with […] regulating the temperature of the room, and there was construction going on over our heads by 8 a.m. some mornings. . All in all the Marin Lodge is a great place to stay in San Rafael well within walking distance of the downtown area. We felt very safe in this residential area. "good hotel in Marin for the money"
This is a nice clean hotel. The furnishings are pleasant and it is very reasonably priced for Marin. IT is easy to get on the freeway from here, and see the sights. It is a much better area than Francisco Blvd or downtown San Rafael. IT is a not a very upscale area and it does have an alcohol or drug rehab center nearby, but I see that as a plus as […] compared to the other areas with inexpensive hotels. It is well maintained. I always put my personal friends who are not wealthy in this hotel. I have heard some stories once in a while about some of the tenants which was that they may have been drug addicts who talked outside in the parking lot too long in the evening, but I have not personally witnessed this. IN general everyone who has stayed here that I know of, thought it was a nice place. It is not fancy but is very good for the money. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The Marin Lodge is an affordable, comfortable hotel. It is very convenient to locations in San Rafael, is in an environment that is acceptably quiet even for one who is sensitive to that, and the rooms are of good quality. I have stayed in much more expensive hotels in the area that were of no better quality.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best Hotel for the money"
This is a good hotel for the money. The neighborhood is not very good, but it is much better than the canal District and the hotel is the best around for the price. Periodically, there are some not so great people hanging around, but most of the time it is fine. It is the best hotel for the money in Marin.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Excellent value for money"
We needed a cheap place to stay on our road trip, and this was perfect. The room was nice, and perfectly clean, and for the price, it really was great. Marin Lodge doesn't include breakfast, but it's only a few minutes drive from the center of San Rafael, so getting something to eat somewhere else is easy enough.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Terrible Service, Nicest 2-Star Rooms Ever"
This is a tiny little 2-star road motel with just about the nicest rooms you could imagine. It's bright and cheerful inside, very clean, and obviously recently renovated. Unfortunately the owners are particularly inflexible about seemingly silly things. I was sharing the room with a business assistant who would arrive and check-in before I did. When […] I arrived and asked to have them put the final charges on my own card, they flat refused. I still can't figure out what the big deal was, but that doesn't change the fact that the rooms are very nice for such an inexpensive stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We have stayed in many motels across our country and none can compare to our recent stay of 5 nights at Colonial Inn. The owners went above and beyond in seeing that our needs were met and the room was large, the beds were very comfortable and spotlessly clean through out, microwave and refrigerator were new. The motel is quiet and secluded and we felt […] 100% safe and secure at all times. I would recommend Colonial Inn to anyone who wants a clean, safe and quite place to stay at a price that is well below other motels in the area. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Fairly close to Domincan University"
Overall, we were very pleased with our room. Our only complaint was that there was no alarm clock. It was late when we discovered this or we would have requested one or requested a wake up call. Our hosts were very accomodating and we had a pleasant stay. This hotel is fairly close to Dominican University.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great place at a great price"
The rooms look like they were recently renovated, so we enjoyed the place and especially liked the ceiling fan.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Near highway and downtown San Rafawel"
Very nice, quiet place. Bed was super comfortable and warm. Shower is walk in, very big. Decorations tasteful. Management has put a lot of time into this place. A gem for a roadside motel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"An Excellent Choice"
Very clean and comfortable. Minimal amenities, great value. This is the place for people who want a simple, clean, spacious room for a stay in the San Rafael-Sonoma area. It's an old-style independent motel recently redone with modern interior.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This hotel was nothing like the pictures EXCEPT for the outside. The bathroom is SO small that you cannot even turn around in it & there are no electrical outlets to even plug in your hair dryer. There was also Black Mold on the bathroom ceiling & when I called maintenance they told me they would call me back in my room & of course they Never did. It […] is so disappointing when all you have to rely on is the pictures on a website to only arrive & have it be a DIVE...I HATE THAT!!!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice out-of-the-way place to stay"
This was our 2nd stay at the Colonial Inn. It continues to be a comfortable Inn, convenient to Marin activities. We're willing to stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
...also not very clean, wouldn't take my shoes off. Coffee pot rusty, smell of smoke in non-smoke room (reported), shower was like a firing line (please, mgmt, a new shower head for the peeps)! Mgmt = friendly. Wireless = barely detectable and not sufficient/acceptable for uploading/downloading files.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Colonial Inn in San Rafael, CA"
The room seemed fine for price. Bed not that comfortable. They did not have enough cleaning staff. It would have been tolerable except for the first time in my life I was attached by BED BUGS. My whole back side was covered with bites, my arms and calves. DO NOT stay here as it is infested.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Colonial Inn-close to downtown San Rafael"
The Colonial Inn is older, fairly well maintained. Could use a couple upgrades, but overall clean, nicely run with good customer service. Close to shops, etc. in San Rafael. Easy off street parking at your door. Secure and quiet.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel room was clean but the shower curtain was very dirty. We request for a change which did not happen. Also, we had some problems with the television. The picture quality was not clear. We placed a complaint and the hotel staff came and did something but after sometime it was not clear again. My husband had to do something behind the television. […] This took our quality time away. "Helt okay i lugn miljö"
"Amazing gem of a lodge! "
07/22/14 WanderingAdventures Springfield, Missouri
I cannot rave enough about this place! It's superb! We stayed one night after passing through San Francisco, and I'm so glad we found this place. :) The exterior is adorable - vine covered, which gives it a cozy feel. Our room was sensational - it was very large, with updated and fab furnishings, VERY clean, and exquisite decorations. I could go on and on about how much I loved this room. And the best part? The cost. For less than a hundred dollars, we got a room that was so much better than a $300+ hotel. You can't beat it! The staff was very kind, as well. There are complementary bottled water, sodas, and coffee, and plump muffins for breakfast. I cannot stress this enough - this lodge is by far the best my family has ever stayed in, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. You will not be disappointed.
"Very decent choice for price category!"

Stayed for one night as an alternative to the very pricey SF hotels, it was easy to find and the room was clean and comfortable. As a guest, you can see some rooms are under renovation but that didn't impact our short stay. San Rafael is a nice community and the area where the hotel is located is semi residential but decent. We were offered complimentary water, soda, morning fare-muffins, fruit and good coffee. Would stay again.
My wife and I stayed here while visiting San Francisco. Short 30min or so drive and considerably cheaper than the hotels closer the city. Spacious rooms. Wifi worked well. Fridge and microwave. Took awhile to get hot water but otherwise showers had good pressure. Beautiful updates bathrooms and showers. Bed was comfortable. Quiet and safe. Aside from lacking a pool, we enjoyed our stay there. Highly recommend it if visiting the area and on a budget.

Convenient location to Napa. San Raphael is an awesome place to visit also. But due to recent renovations not everything in the room was functioning and there were no extra sheets or blankets even though the staff indicated there were. The staff, however, was very friendly and accommodating. I would recommend this location, since it is affordable and convenient.
"Ok, but there was a little bit of attitude!"
07/09/14 stitchadventures Ojai, California
Stayed two nights. Clean rooms, easy parking in a crowded neighborhood. Good wifi, nice free water & sodas. Problems - plenty: We wanted to pay cash, but they wouldn't take it. Said it would be an "accounting nightmare". Huh? They didn't clean our room - even though we were gone all day. Iron in room, but no ironing board. Hot water problem. It took 4-5 minutes of running the water down the sink to get any hot water at all. What a waste!!!!! If they are going to sell rooms as a motel, they need to update the hot water system. My husband said he would give it a B. I give it a C, and I won't be staying again.
"Convenient and Affordable"
06/28/14 Dan W Anderson, California
The Lodge is a few blocks away from downtown San Rafael and Hwy 101.. We weren't disappointed. Frrom the Inn we jumped on 101 for the guick drive to the Larksper Ferry and A&TT Park. Takes about 10 minutes back from the Ferry after it docks. Safe, clean, continental breakfast, friendly and affordable. Traffic noise from street was not an issue, but this is not your idea of a "country inn."
"Route 66 Style Motel in California"
06/16/14 texbeth96 Dallas, Texas
This remodel is a great stop. The price is amazing and easy to get to. Great place to stay if going to the Muir Woods. The beds/pillows were great, large room with 2 queen beds, flat screen TV, a nice desk area. In the center of the motel 2 rooms are still being renovated. The breakfast was simple but good with muffins and fresh fruit. The hotel manager recommended a wonderful Puerto Rican restaurant, Sol Food. I would definitely stay here again.
"Great Motel, friendly people - great value"

I find the other recent reviews accurate. We were on our final-less-one day of our holiday and needed a bed for just one night before leaving late the next day from SF international airport. We spent the day and lunched in Sausalito. Then, given our experience of. Given our experience of SF city hotels and their cost we moved further away from the city in search of accommodation. (I didn't feel like negotiating SF traffic and parking hassles). We ended up in San Rafael and booked into the Marin ad-hoc early in the evening. While we had no trouble getting that one room for the night, it was a weekday - while I was checking out the next day phone calls happened from people trying to make reservations and they were getting the 'sorry, full up' explanation. The people are nice and friendly. Looked after us splendidly. Our recently-renovated room was one of the best we've ever stayed in for such a reasonable rate. It was quiet and relatively peaceful - something else SF city hotels aren't reknowned for. Sure, renovations were continuing around the reception area but this didn't detract from our stay. I'd definitiely stay here again - and recommend this motel.
"Good value, kinks still being worked out"
05/29/14 Needagoodbed Mountain View, CA
There is construction on the office at this motel, and whether it is true or not, the people seem to be new at what they were doing. The motel is a great value for the area and its proximity to many things, but, as has been noted, there are some quirks in the rooms. Our room had a nice office chair but no comfortable sitting chair. The shower plumbing was reversed-- it took a bit of time to realize why the hot water was not coming. There is a small fridge and microwave in the room-- that was a nice convenience. The rooms/bathrooms seem to have been updated at some point recently. The room was spotless. The bed was just OK. Coffee and muffins are offered in the morning at 8am. Unfortunately, we were gone and did not have a chance to try them. "Gem" and "Treasure" descriptions on other reviews seem a bit far fetched. The fact is this is still a motel. Maybe when people see the place from the outside, there are low expectations for the rooms. The place is clean, which is great. Four stars from me only because of the value.
"What a treasure"
05/25/14 ErisHellwigg Montreal, Canada
I stayed at the Marin Lodge my last night in California. It is north of the Golden Gate Bridge but just a short easy drive to the airport. This is a little gem. Rooms were redone nicely, very clean, and had everything needed. Staff at the front desk were very friendly, as were the other guests I talked to in the parking area while unloading. This renovated motel is a treasure. Book early because there aren't many rooms.
