"A gem in a remote county"
This was our second stay at the Tallman Hotel. Once again, we were impressed with the high quality of the accommodation, the excellent restaurant on site, and the hospitality of the staff. The beautiful rooms rival the most unique and luxurious accommodations anywhere. And to think that this oasis is in the remote Lake County is amazing. It is a reason […] to make the journey to Lake County, in addition to the blooming wine industry and uncommercialized charm of the area. A unique and high quality property with excellent amenities. "amazing hotel in a shabby town."
We arrived in the afternoon, tallman staff showed us to our room. Check in was simple and easy, staff was courteous and efficient. The room was immaculate, perfectly restored molding, clean linen and windows. The bathroom and shower were also sparkling. The room felt warm and cozy, perfect for a weekend getaway. We decided to go for a walk around the […] town. We passed friendly but drunk folks sitting in front of what could have been very cute shops. The town is run down and very strange. We retreated back to the tallman. There was live music and a great menu at the tallman's restaurant. We found that you must make reservations on live music nights or you are stuck with outside seating. There were heaters, but it was too cold for me. So we ordered our food and they eagerly brought it to our lovely room. The food was great, the service just as good, overall I was very satisfied with our experience. I would go back for a cozy night, curled up in bed, but my husband was not impressed with the town. I will still try to talk him into it. The lake is beautiful as was the drive. Don't expect much from the town and expect a lot from the tallman and you are sure to enjoy! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great little find in the Clearlake area"
The hotel really stands out from its surroundings - beautiful grounds and pool, great restaurant and leaf-covered courtyard, friendly service and lovely little continental breakfast. Highly recommended.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We wanted to check out the Clear Lake area and found this place at Hotel's. The accomodations were ones we would and have paid double for in many places. The history of the place was an interesting addition.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Place to stay very relaxing!"
This is our 3rd time staying at the Tallman hotel and each time it was really relaxing. The town is very cute, there is a wine bar across the street. The food in the Blue Wing is awesome! The best Cesar salad i have ever had! The rooms are great. There is a casino about 3 minutes away and wineries about 10-15 minutes away. We love it so much in Clear […] Lake that we are looking for a house to buy. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"An oasis of luxury in Lake County, California"
02/22/14 Amy K Los Altos, California
My friend and I stayed at the Tallman Hotel in February, 2014 and it was an absolutely lovely little vacation after a busy week working in San Francisco. This is the kind of place I'd choose to visit when I wanted to get away from everything and sleep in, sit by a quiet pool, enjoy gorgeous gardens, eat on the property and completely relax. The first thing you'll notice is that the hotel has been completely renovated and is in perfect condition. The owners hired a top notch design firm from San Francisco to help with the renovation and the interior decoration, which is extremely tasteful and perfect for the area. I'd love to live in a house that was as well appointed as this spot! The lighting in the rooms is great. There are reading sconces on each side of the big, comfortable beds and floor and desk lights to make each room cozy and welcoming. The bathrobes are exquisite. Ours hung in a bathroom that featured a restored claw-foot tub, double pedestal sink, and a shower that rained water down from the ceiling of the stall. There are wide verandas with ceiling fans and comfortable chairs to allow for reading and just sitting. A European-style courtyard between the hotel and the property's Blue Wing Saloon and Restaurant reminded me of streets in Positano, Italy. It was too chilly to sit there in February, but I plan to return in warmer weather. Breakfast is served in the dining room and is included with the room rate. We had a delicious quiche, homemade scones, fruit, and yogurt. Dinner at the Blue Wing was as good as any restaurant in San Francisco of the casual, fresh and local type. I had a delicious vegetable lasagne and an arugula-grapefruit-toasted hazelnut salad that was big enough to generously serve two. I visited during a weekend when the Tallman was hosting a "Concert and Conversation" event in its meeting room on Saturday night. This time they featured a folk singer duo, and they were terrific. Tickets were $25 and with that you can have all the homemade brownies and oatmeal-fruit-nut cookies and coffee you'd like. The acoustics were very good and the intimate atmosphere welcoming. It was a very special, relaxed, and wonderful evening. On the Saturday of our weekend we visited a couple of wineries in the area. The small downside is that the Tallman Hotel is located in an economically challenged area and its immediate environs on Main Street are not up to the high quality nature of the hotel property. So, I highly recommend you visit this very special jewel when you want to completely refresh, relax and recharge. This is not a place for shopping, which was a happy thing for me because I didn't spend money needlessly on things I didn't need. I will admit that I bought one of the bathrobes because I've never seen one of such high quality for such a reasonable price (and I travel a lot). Finally, the General Manager and owners are extremely gracious people. They want their guests to love peaceful and beautiful Lake County as much as they do and it shows.
"Tallman Hotel-Perfect Local Getaway!"

My husband and I are beginning our 50th year together! We started off with an afternoon snack at the Blue Wing and then checked into our wonderful Garden Room complete with a Japanese soaking tub on the private back patio. Bernie & Lynn got everything right when they restored this gem of a property in Upper Lake. I have 3 songs that I hoped that Mariko would sing during our dinner on Sunday night, not only did she sing 2 of our favorites, they came to our table to congratulate us. Our meal was marvelous, the staff extremely cordial and efficient, a truly memorable way to start off our 50th year of marriage. Stephanie and Doug Codling (Lake County Residents) We encourage other locals to stay here, you won't be disappointed!
"A Valentine Surprise!"
This was our Valentine getaway. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and were very impressed. The room was clean, cozy, and well appointed. BATHROBES! The hotel grounds were well kept and even though it was February and not in the peak growing season, it was still neat and pretty. We had a room with an outdoor soaking tub on the private back patio. AWESOME! The bed was comfortable and the towels and sheets were soft. I was impressed with the tile work in the bathroom and the intricate door hardware on the patio. CLASSY! Wine glasses, cork screw, and refrigerator in the room made our romantic getaway seamless. We would definitely stay there again.

"Gorgeous, friendly, fantastic food"

I love the Tallman. I've stayed a number of places in this region, and the Tallman is my favorite for a B&B with charm and a historic feel. The renovation that went into this property is like nothing I've ever seen. Practical: delicious, healthy (if you want it) breakfast is included. The adjacent Blue Wing Saloon has food quality I didn't expect to find in Lake County--definitely on par with the "wine country with altitude, not attitude" feel of the area.
"Very Pleasant Bed and Breakfast"
12/28/13 Linda P Crescent City, California
We spent one night here because it is close to my mother-in-law. The hotel is old and historic but all the facilities are modernized. Be sure to take time to look at the photo album in the lobby that details the complete remodeling project. We stayed in an upper garden room. The room was spacious and nicely decorated...comfy king size bed, veranda, well-appointed bathroom including bathrobes and pool towels. The heating system kept the room very comfortable and it was also quiet. The staff was friendly and helpful. We had a very nice dinner across the garden area at the Blue Wing Cafe and Saloon. The food was excellent and there was even live entertainment that included Christmas songs. Breakfast the next morning was scrumptious; we were asked to make our selections for breakfast the day before and could choose room delivery or eating in the dining room. We opted for the dining room because it was so attractive. The scones were so light and flaky; they were just wonderful!
"A perfect hotel"

This is a delightful hotel, well looked after and beautifully furnished. The breakfast was served in a well appointed dining room. Everything was home made and delicious. We had so looked forward to sampling their restaurant the evening of our stay, but the service was dreadful the meal delivered while we were still eating our starters on cold plates - the potatoes were old, stale and cold - the experience in the dining room marred what was otherwise a very special place.

Our first trip up to Lake County from the Bay Area was most pleasant and inviting. It was made all the more wonderful with an overnight stay at the Tallman Hotel. We chose the Veranda Room #3, which is on the front of the main building, with windows to the quiet street on one side and the courtyard between the hotel and the Blue Wing Saloon on the other. The room is spacious, nicely decorated, light, and simply lovely. The tiled bathroom is large, and features a raised tub and separate shower. A delicious breakfast was served until 10 a.m. in the front dining room, which is adorned with period style and furnishings. Chef Carli is absolutely wonderful, and greeted us to ensure that breakfast experience exceeded expectations. We enjoyed Saturday dinner at the Blue Wing Saloon, right next door. This is a must-dine stop along the way. Bernie and crew have renovated the historic saloon to its original glory. We sipped on cocktails in the courtyard late afternoon, and then were seated inside for dinner. One of us had the lamb, and the other had the halibut. Both dishes were delicious, as was the charcuterie and cheese plate served prior to the entrées. The wine list features many of the best of Lake County wineries. We chose the Moore Family Cab Sav, and started with sparkling wine. The Tallman Hotel is an ideal getaway if you appreciate professional, friendly service by the staff, lovely accommodations, and an excellent restaurant (should have a star) right next door. We will return soon for weekend stay.
"Nice hotel with great rooms"
10/08/13 cu-pl Muhltal, Germany
Upperlake is a nice little western town and the Tallman hotel is a very good choice to stay. The rooms are perfect, because you have little private patio where you have sun in the morning and it even had an outside shower. In the evenings you can sit on the porch in front of your room and enjoy the aun there. Right next to the hotel is the Blue Wing restaurant, which is a good choice for lunch or dinner. You can sit outside in the shade of the trees and enjoy their food and microbrews.
"Small Town Elegance"
10/07/13 Jill_and_Tim_2012 San Jose, California
What's most obvious when you stay at the Tallman is that it's been lovingly restored, and that the staff really care about the place. Everyone was not just friendly, but remembered our names and took the time to offer bits of history about the hotel and the area. We enjoyed looking through a 1906 guest register showing all the elegant signatures and visitors from far-flung cities. The small dining room serves a modest but lovely breakfast, and Carly made a point of talking to each guest to make sure the scones, breads, and quiches were up to snuff -- they were! Owner Bernie made a point of talking with us as we made our way through a crowd during a music and wine event in the lobby. All the special touches, large and small, the very comfortable beds, the huge claw-foot bathtub, made for a great stay. And our dinners in the courtyard at the Blue Wing right next door were fantastic -- the best salmon we've had maybe ever. Loved everything about this place -- we'll be back!
