Barcelona's Old Town, the Ciutat Vella takes in the Barri Gòtic and the world-famous promenade of Las Ramblas. The former is the city's medieval core, a maze of atmospheric alleyways clustered around the splendid Gothic Cathedral. Quirky specialist shops and characterful bars and eateries abound. Don't miss the Museu Picasso and the Museu d'Història de la Ciutat, as much for their palatial settings as their content.see all hotels in Barcelona
"Not a good hotel, more like a dirty hostel"
This place is like a dirty hostel w a private bath, that has mold by the way. Neighboring call girls guard the entrance that you need to get buzzed to get in or out. Beds are old, squeaky, and mattress about 1 inch thick. You need to give them a deposit of 20€ for the remote...for all the batteries that have been stolen in the past. Continental breakfast […] = cafe + bread. Staff was not helpful except for buzzing you in to get in Positives: walking to everywhere, always had hot water. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Serviceable accommodations. Very noisy."
The hotel is in a central location only a few minutes walk from Las Ramblas but an in-town, congested location brings all the noise of an in-town, congested location. It is located adjacent to a small square with a good amount of foot traffic that doesn't die down until deep into the night so if you value peace and quiet this might not be the place […] for you. Accommodations are small and basic but not too bad. The room had several light switches but only one controlled the ceiling lights so the choice after sundown was either a fully lit room or no light at all. Not a convenient situation if one person wants to sleep and another does not... There is a fee for wifi internet access (seemingly common in Barcelona) but the hotel also charges for use of the lobby computer as well. A bare bones, basic hotel for those looking for an amenity free but convenient location to stash their bags and sleep. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Walking distance to many sites / metro"
The front desk was very helpful with pointing out sites to visit and best way to get there. Our room was clean and neat. Many places to eat near by. The only downside was the walls are thin (old building) we had some noisy people across from us that would wake us about 3am each night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Not worth it at all"
The hotel is not even CLOSE to a 2-stars hotel let alone 3 stars. The location is good as it is about 2 blocks away from Las Ramblas right by the Liceu theater but the hotel itself is awful. The rooms are really small and there was no air conditioning. The walls are so thing that you can hear everything on your floor. If you do stay here make sure you […] dont stay byt the street side or by the elevators. You will suffer badly. The only good thing about this hotel is the staff. The ladies at the front desk are super friendly and accomodating. They were helpful with providing directions and suggestions on things to do but I would not stay in this hotel again. We were put in a 3-beds room (we were only 2 people) and it was cramped!! we went down to complain and the front desk moved us to another "better" room. The second room was a little better but still bad in terms of cleanliness and facilities. To save energy/electricity the hotel shuts down all A/C, lights, etc for the whole hotel. It is awful. You could stay on nicer small hotels right at Las Ramblas for another $30-40 per night including breakfast. One more thing, there is no free nothing. You need to leave a deposit for the remote control for the tv, pay four euros per day for using the safe and breakfast is not included. they do offer a continental breakfast for five euros per day. "great location close to La Rambla"
When I travel all I really want is a clean room in a convenient location and the Hotel Barbara offered just that. Stayed there for 5 nights with my daughter and my brothet, returning to the hotel late every night and we did not have any problems at all. One review complained about Ladies of the Night in the area and they are there on the cross road by […] the hotel, but you don't have to walk down the street they are on to reach the hotel door. Off La Rambla turn on the street by the Liceau, the Opera house, and walk straight down to the hotel. Not much traffic on the street, and it looks kind of funky, but no one bothered us anywhere in Barcelona. I also noticed several single women vacationing at the hotel and they did not seem to feel unsafe either. Great location to the Gothic quarter, the harbour, Placa Catalunia and many other sites. Wifi is only available in the lobby and you purchase it by the hour. 3 Euros for 1hour or 6 Euros for 12 hours that you can use at anytime during your stay. I found out about that after I had already used up the first hour and needed more time :) Friendly staff at the hotel. Pick up a voucher for the Bus Touristic at the reception.Saves 1 Euro off the price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Bad neighborhood but decent hotel"
One of the things I wish I had read in a previous review was that the hotel isn't in a very nice neighborhood. When our taxi driver dropped us off he warned us to be careful and look out b/c it was a bad area. There were prostitutes everywhere. Hotel staff was nice. No real window to the room and the shower head came directly from the ceiling which […] was a little odd. Be careful not to blow a fuse as I did by using just a blow dryer. Have fun... very close to the main road for touristy stuff. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The staff at this hotel was friendly and helpful but this is the only positive thing. The location is in a very bad neighborhood. Thugs and "ladies of the night" linger around this area at all times of the day. The rooms were ok the beds weren't very comfortable and the room was very plain. The tv didn't work half the time we were there. There was […] no phone in the room. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hotel Barbara-Great Budget Hotel"
If you are travelling on a tight budget, this is the place for you. The location was perfect, right off La Rambla, with easy access to the metro if you want to explore further. The staff was wonderful, always someone at the front desk willing to share information. The room attendant actually left her power card in the room so the room would be warm […] when we returned because she saw we had so many blankets! Great restaurants in close walking distance, try Pollo Rico (a suggestion by the front desk), and Can Culleretes (oldest restaurant in Barcelona) for great inexpensive food. Thankfully, I had read all the reviews before arriving, so I was somewhat prepared for all the downsides (prostitutes, small bare rooms). Had I not known what I was getting into, I probably would have been very disappointed/shocked. The room felt very much like a dorm room, 3 twin sized beds and a wardrobe (foam mattresses), a tiny TV up high on the wall with only one channel available (and it's in Spanish), and one small bedside table. That's it! So you definately only want the room to sleep/shower. The bathroom was very old/run down, but also very clean (the whole hotel was very old/run down, but very clean). As for the prostitutes, they are definately right outside and all around, but during our 7 nights we came and went at all hours of the day and night, and never once felt unsafe or even bothered by them. The hotel also keeps the front door locked, they buzz you in/out 24hrs, so you won't run into them inside. So, although the first impression at Hotel Barbara is terrible, it's actually a great place to stay for the budget concious traveller. My biggest complaint would be the lack of internet access in the room. Only internet access available is in the lobby and at a charge. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We liked most of it. Our only complaint would be that there is a bath and no shower facilities. It means one cannot wet the upper part of the body. Its not really hygienic to wash like that. If this is rectified we would go there again and would recommend strongly others to go there. Secondly, the computers for clients' use need to be upgraded immediately. "Pay for what you get"
The staff were friendly and the hotel is within easy walking distance to la rambla. The double room we had was no bigger than a shoe box although the bedding and bathroom were clean. Hotel is about 5 minute walk from La Rambla which is great! Its probably not in the BEST part of town but we never felt unsafe or anything. "Ok for cheap hotel."
We really like the breakfast. Staff were very friendly. The rooms smelt like cigarettes. Hotel is generally run down.Genuine Expedia guest review
I never even spent the night. Though it claims to have a good location for tourists, don't fall in this trap. I was seriously scared when my taxi arrived there - lots of low class drunk people hanging out in the square in front of it, a bar next to it full of drunken man. Really low class and dangerous area. I managed to make in the bedroom, but it […] was impossible to stay. Even the bed linen (?) was disgusting, with horrible stains. Shower looked disgusting. Outside the window was an alley, where homeless people where making horrible loud noises. I stayed there for 20 min only, the time I needed to call the Sheraton and book a room there!!! I tought that just for 2 nights i could do with a simple cheap hotel, but i really would have been better off sleeping in a park bench. Pictures are TOTALLY misleading. Don't go there! "Be Careful, The Neighbourhood Is Terrible"
Although the hotel's location was good for seeing city center and La Rambla, the neighborhood was very frightening. When we were trying to find the hotel for the first time; we have seen drunks and lots of weird guys. One of them tried to pick-pocket me in the first minutes when we were trying to reach La Rambla. I really can not recommend this hotel. […] We had to take taxi instead of metro just because of that neighborhood and I think it's better to pay a little more and find a better hotel. Contrary to the hotel's neighborhood and very bad room conditions, the stuff was very helpful. This was the second worst hotel I've ever stayed in my life. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Very good value. However, it was a very small room (as befits the price) - so I wouldn't want to spend too much time in there. Handy location - just off La Ramblas. Dropped my bags off, went to the footie, pints, got back at silly o'clock, up in the morning and off home.Genuine Expedia guest review

"cheap, clean, easy access - Hotel, not the prossies"
The hotel itself is superb for what it is - a no-frills weekend getaway. Just 2 mins walk (for a woman in heels) from La Rambla and the metro, fantastic nightlife, easy access for sight seeing (once you mastered the metro - a T10 is all you need between yourself and others as it is just that, 10 journeys for 9.95euros) and the hotel itself isn’t to […] shabby for putting your head down - for us it was just two females getting away to enjoy the life of Barcelona. Unfortunately, the biggest let down was the prostitutes outside our hotel from Morning till night. And with being two blonde females the male attention in this area wasn't welcomed either - but looking straight forward, speaking no English soon deterred them. But apart from this little let down, for a weekend getaway of 4 days and 3 nights the hotel staff were friendly, welcoming, happy to help with booking taxis and no charge for holding cases when we checked out the room. There is a charge of 4euros a day for the use of the room safe (which I think is normal in most places nowadays)…but again, for a no-frills hotel, I would most probably use this hotel again if just for the cheapness compared to others only 5 minutes away. my wife and i were staying 3 nights. room was clean, but very basic. they didn't have extra plankets, because they were fully booked...but staff was friendly. yes, there are prostitutes next to the hotel, but that didn't bother us at all. if you stay there to visit the city, the hotel is cheap and 5 minutes to the city center. if you need luxury on […] a citytrip, don't go there. if you are a woman travelling alone, you should probably look for another area - though we didn't have any problems there. the area around is not a real red light district - there are some very nice restaurants and pubs close by. but they are more alternativ and not fancy (enough fancy restaurants in the old city center). we would go there again. "Location, location, location"
So, what do you want a hotel for? If its a case of a roof over your head and a clean room in the centre of Barcelona. Then this is the one. After I had booked my room, it started to occur to me that the price was too cheap. Several of my friends teased me as to what I would find. What I did find was a small clean hotel, a clean room with en suite facilities […] and within 50 metres or so of La Rambla a bit down from La Boqueria. What more could you want? Well I know some people spend lots of time in hotel rooms doing all sorts but for me on a city break my room is for sleeping and showering only so was absolutely perfect for me. Now having praised the hotel (and I do genuinely recomend it on value) the one slight downside, there were a few working ladies right outside the hotel, and with each return to the hotel, they had to be dodged! Not the end of the world when you're getting such value. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good location but not very comfortable"
The hotel is located right in the center of Barcelona, it's just a short walk from La Rambla. "Diamond In The Rough"
My girlfriend and I spent 3 nights here while in Barcelona. Barbara was perfect for us. Great location, comfortable, clean rooms with a safe, and of course very well priced. For those of you not caring about 5 star luxuries this is the spot. It's not that the Hotel is falling apart, not by any means. It's just a little old and dated.s The neighborhood […] is fun with lots going on. Yes there a few 'dodgy' characters hanging around the square out the front. Yes there are prostitutes and pimps right in the same block. We didn't have any problems with any of this. There was a large police presence in the area and every one understood their roles and didn't bother those that chose to keep to them selves. Any body who says this hotel is in a bad, dangerous neighborhood has obviously never left their suburban safety blanket and gotten out of their comfort zone. Also, every one of the front desk staff were very helpful as well as being fluent in English. Something you can't take for granted in Spain.
