"Fun At Riu Yucatan"
The staff was very kind and friendly. The entire place was spotless. The food was very good and plentiful with lots of variety. The pool area was also spotless. The staff wore nice uniforms that were clean and pressed. It was absolutely wonderful!!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Poor service and rooms"
The beach and pools are great but the hotel is poor. The emplys are very polite but the front desk was VERY BAD in providing helpful tips / ideas / solutions. The food is dissent +, but the rooms are terrible!!!!!!!!! worst beds i ever had in a hotel, no doors between the sleeping area and the bathrooms.Genuine Expedia guest review
When we arrived our hotel was overbooked but they upgraded us to another hotel within their property chain and it was fantastic!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Economy, not glamourous"
It's simply an economy all inclusive resort, which you notice in the lower quality of (hard) beds, (worn out) towels, (metal) keys, (scratchy) blankets, (worn out) furniture (in lobby and room), and (tube fuzzy) tv. For about the same price, our stays at the Iberostar Quetzal right next door were far more pleasing with updated items. The food at Riu […] buffett was average (breakfast was best), but the a la carte dinners were very good. The beverages were limited and not too tasty. Pepsi products and Dos Equis. Staff were friendly, helpful. It was at full capacity, but not crowding on beach or pool. We enjoyed ourselves and didnt feel like we overpaid. It seems like they just build more Riu's rather than major upgrade the older ones. Rooms were cleaned daily, with 2 fresh towels. Beverages stocked every other. The room had hard liquor as well as sodas and beers. It was OK. If that's the price you want to spend, you'll be fine during your stay, but also look at Iberostar Quetzal or Tucan and compare prices because Iberostar offers more scenary, animals to watch, physical activities, better buffetts and drinks. We tried the Riu this time because we had already stayed twice at Quetzal and wanted different scenery. The layout of the rooms and walkways per each building creates a lot of loud vocal and foot traffic past your door. Each has 3 floors no elevators. No great ocean views in any rooms. Lots of bars to order drinks in and out of the pool. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Great hotel for the price! Very good service everywhere we went, and the food was very decent. Very lively atmosphere with a good younger crowd, but nothing too crazy. Wonderful beach! The extra restaurants where so-so and some are partly or all buffets anyways. If you go figure out a ride ahead of time from the airport to the resort before you get […] there, it can be a cluster to do it on the spot. Would definitely come here again. "Nice trip, great hotel."
We spent 5 great days at Riu Yucatan. Maybe not the best hotel of the Riu family in Playacar (gated section of Playa Del Carmen), but absolutely meeting, and in some aspects exceeding our expectations for the price we paid. Stunning beach, clear crystal water, plenty / variety of food, excellent personnel / service . For few who like to be pampered […] every possible way and willing to pay for it, I'd recommend Riu Palace (next to RY), and for everyone else who want to pay reasonably for more than reasonable services, Riu Yucatan is the place. The overall experience was good. NOT impressed with the food. The food quality was good, but the day-to-day variety did not meet expectations. Was NOT impressed or satisfied with the way the specialty resturaunts were organized (had to sign up for a time). This was very inconvienient and inofficient. Some days the availability to sign up was closed […] after only a short time. The idea of having two double beds put together for a king did NOT meet expectations. What reputable establishment uses double beds in this day and time? The staff was extremely plesent and hard working. Overall would recommend the stay to others, but with stipulations. We stayed here in 2007 for our wedding, and all guests of our wedding also stayed. Everyone had a good stay. Only complaint was sewer smell in our room. We stayed here again in August 2011. We also brought along 8 friends. Everyone had a great stay. The staff is wonderful, the rooms and food are good. Only complaint is the beds are a little hard, but […] nothing horrible. Everyone was awesome at the hotel. The only things I didn't like was that the food at the buffet could be repetative, and the beds were very hard. Everything else was really great, including the staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Hotel in a Beautiful Gated Community"
Although the beds definitely need an adjustment, the hotel was great. Rooms were clean. Service was great! Food at the restuarants was nice (fulfilling and clean). Drinks, like in every all-inclusive hotel were watered down. I did notice that during the time we were there, we were pretty much the only Americans. Hotel is visited by a lot of Europeans. […] I have been to Cancun/PLaya/Riviera Maya area many times and this hotel was good. We rented a car, so getting around was easy. Being that it is in a gated community, the hotel has good security. Nice nieghborhood. The homes in this area are beautiful. All in all it is a good hotel. No problems, other than the beds not being to comfortable (but it is not a deal breaker) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Very good food, nice beach, great location. All hotel staff is very friendly, they work really hard and long hours and they still have a nice smile in their face when serving you! "Fun at the Riu"
The Riu Yucatan is a nice resort. There are many things to do. The food is good. The staff is amazing. Anything I asked for they did. They even dropped off a little present at my room one day. I do not think you can go wrong for the money with this place, sure you can get a nicer place like the riu palace next door but for the bang for the buck it is […] a great place to stay. Playa Del Carmen is a very fun town, with many things to do the resort is only a $7 taxi ride from town, and close to a lot of places in the Mayan Rivera, and Mayan ruins. When your book your trip, consider renting a car. When you book it all together it worked out to be less for me then what it would cost for the airport transfers, then you can drive to ruins and parks on your time without paying the for the big excursion prices. "Not impressed - too noisy & beds VERY uncomfortable-been to better resorts."
While @ the RIU Yucatan, we were intiially pleased with the accomodations, but after spending 6 nights we found it to be VERY, VERY, VERY, NOISY - the maids hang out next to each room and chatter LOUDLY and turn on the RADIO in the room next door LOUDLY and don't consider guests sleeping. The BEDS are VERY, VERY, VERY, HARD and uncomfortable - we booked […] a double bed room, and received a KING SIZE & then the maid came over and separated both beds - NOT very accomodating, but our arrival was LATE in the evening, so we accepted it. Each time me or my roommate moved in bed during the night, the beds would bang against the headboard and made alot of NOISE. We asked for kleenex, tissue and water replacement 3 times before ANYONE took it to us--only after we (I) became demanding! WIll not plan on staying @ this resort in future as I've stayed in 5-star resorts! ALSO TOPLESS beaches NOT notified ahead of time and VERY< VERY embarrassing especiall to children in Resort AREA - This MUST BE noted up front before reservation is complete! Best Day Travel shuttle service woke us up the 1st morning @ 7:45 am (demanding we meet with them later in the day) even though we were to be there for 6 days - this could've waited. The late arrival with the 'early' wake-up call was NOT appreciated! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Just got back for the Riu Yucatan. Great accomidations staff was very polite, and willing to assist you in any way they could. Of course every on complains about the beds being to hard in Mexico, but they were tolerable. We recently celebrated our 33 aniversary and we made reservations at the Steak House Grill at the resort. Food was great, the brought […] a bottle of champaine, made us a cake, and had flowers on the table. My wife was sure surprized. The food at main dinning room was plentiful and varied for everyones taste. There were several visitors from Europe , South America, and Asia. The swim up bars are such a wonderful concept. We made several friends there. The drinks were made quickly and with a flare. I only wish I could get my employees to show such passion and professionalism in their daily duties. We also visited the Riu Tequila, simular resort , but if your going to the ocean, stay on the ocean not accross the street. We will definately return. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great stay at the Riu Yucatan"
Well, first off, I had read a great deal of the mixed reviews prior to booking this hotel, so I was a bit worried before we got there. However once we arrived we were very satisfied with our stay. The staff was very friendly and curteous and quickly assisted us when we needed help (only once because we couldn't figure out the lock to our room). The […] resort is huge, and with the all inclusive package, we were able to use the two other Riu resorts nearby. The food was okay. Not excellent, and if you ask me, I wouldn't waste time with the specialty restaurants. (You need to book a reservation at the specialty restaruants prior to 8:30am each morning). Overall, it was a great value, again, it's not a 5 star hotel, but the difference in price to 4+/5 star hotel make it completely worth staying here. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We stayed 4 weeks in Riu Yucatan and really enjoyed the place. The most impressing was the service, when there was any problem, like empty battery for remotecontrol, it was not only solved within 10 minutes, but teh reception called later to verify if it was done. The waiters in restaurant and bar were really busy, but so nice and helpful, they deserve […] all an extra tip. Fantastisk personal. Mycket serviceminded. Frukostbuffen gudomlig. Övriga maten likaså, men efter några dagar så tröttnar man lite på maten trots all variation. "Отель Riu Yucatan"

"Hey Folks....listen to lora!"
Just got back from the Riu Yucatan/dec/2013.....Since they renovated to pink and lime green not much has changed but great service, hard working people that take good care of you and a place where you can have loads of fun. Central to playacar- 5th street market and base for day excursions. The outside bars are great as you can meet folks from everywhere. Beach is so georgeous and good exercise for a swim/walk. Drinks and food are great, you would be a fool if you couldnt find something terrific there. Busy place but look elsewhere if you want quieter surroundings/resort. Surprised that they did not accommodate more to the disabled or have wheelchairs for their guests. Bring your own if you have any trouble walking. They need to step that up alot. Email for more info if needed. We had a blast! email@example.com
"Great staff.. Very good vacation"
12/11/13 adzees Edmonton, Canada
I stayed at RIU Yucatan from nov 30 till dec 7/13. This was our first time in mexico and we enjoyed every moment of it. The rooms were spotless, and clean. Staff works really hard to ensure the grounds are always clean. Food was great. there was enough choice to eat something different every day. DO NOT LISTEN to bad reviews. they just need to get a life. The beach was great, and there were enough loungers available for every one. The weather was great, and we only got one hour of rain during our whole trip. All in all it was a great vacation. I am definitely going back one day.
"Great Value in the Riviera Maya."
12/11/13 urbantravelite Toronto
I was recently at this hotel while attending a wedding in the Riviera Maya. Newly renovated, this hotel is a really comfortable choice for a vacation in the Riviera Maya. Rooms - Newly renovated, spacious and clean. They still have the old Riu Designed bathrooms but everything else seems new. Didn't like the open concept bathroom particularly when sharing with my Mom and Bestie...but we made it work by hanging up the bed liner as a makeshift shower curtain...sorted :) Food - Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the buffet was up to Riu standards, with lots of choice. I really enjoyed the Breakfast choices and spent a lot of time eating the fresh fruits, drinking the fresh juices and enjoying the fresh bread :). They ran out of guacamole by about 930am, so the morale of the story is the early bird gets the guac :) Drinks are good and bar staff is friendly. I had to ask for Cuban rum in my Cuba Libre because the regular rum didn't make it taste authentic. Beach and Pool - they have two pools, one big one and one smaller one near the lobby. That pool was quieter and had a lot of lounge chairs. They also had the upgrade lounge chairs there, my favourite because they are more comfortable. The beach is huge, with lots of space to lounge. Entertainment - nightly shows FANTASTIC. They have the 2nd best Michael Jackson show (and I've seen a lot of them lol). They had this kid doing the human beat box that was unbelievable...standing ovation for him. Other - 90min free wifi in the lobby per day/per device was also a bonus. There are a lot of animals on the property that people like to feed...very annoying that people ignore the signs. All fun and games until the animal bites you and you get rabies. There is also a lot of greenary and foliage which means lots of mosquitos. Bring repellent! All in all, a worthwhile resort in the Riviera Maya. Hope this review helps... Urbantravelite.
"Gorgeous hotel on a lovely beach front"
12/10/13 katetheplate Manchester, United Kingdom
We just returned from a 14 night stay at the Riu Yucatan (dep 25/11/13). This was our 3rd Riu and has still not failed to meet our expectations, and this hotel in particular exceeded our expectations. The weather was gorgeous, glorious sunshine. In winter the sun comes out early and goes in early, so to make the most of our holiday we were sunbathing by 8.30/9.30am until 4/5pm. We are nicely tanned for Christmas despite the day or two of torrential rain we had. There were also a couple of showers for a few days but these cleared up within a few hours, where you could then go back outside into the glorious sunshine again. Average temps reached between 28-35C. Do not listen to the bad reviews for this hotel from ungrateful Brits!!! The hotel is spotless, the staff work so hard to ensure the grounds are maintained in top condition. The Mexican people are so friendly and polite and can not do enough for you i.e. fast drink service at the bars and friendly waiter service during breakfast and dinner. Beach As I already mentioned .... fantastic beach. The waters are really clear, and refreshing. The current can sometimes be quite strong and the waves rather choppy - hence it was quite difficult to get water sports out i.e. the kayak, snorkeling sets, windsurf (all inclusive). However, we managed to get the bodyboards out whenever we wanted. Hotel Room Very clean and modern with two double beds pushed together to form one huge bed (probably a queen size if not slightly smaller). The room did have a musty smell, but this seems to be a trend in all of the Riu hotel rooms. The room did look a little rushed considering the whole hotel had recently been refurbished i.e. small chips of paint on the walls. Optics and mini bar in the room stocked with water, beers and fizzy drinks. The air con for me got too cold at times (my boyfriend preferred) and it was difficult to change the settings. This was not a huge problem as a thick blanket is available. Keep your expensive belongings in a safe as had some of our things moved about in our room. It may all have been innocent but just be careful. Food The food here is perfect! Catering for everyone, e.g. there was roast beef, turkey, duck and BBQ ribs, seafood, and mexican in the main buffet restaurant. The Al a Carte' restaurants were great too, the steak in the steakhouse was amazing as was the chicken (tasted like Nandos!). I'd suggest eating lunch at the Riu Tequila (all inclusive) as the food is better quality and there were flies near food and birds in the open eatery at the Yucatan. Drinks at the Tequila were as good quality incl cocktails using international drinks e.g. Martini, Bacardi etc. Excursions Xel Ha - brilliant - zip wiring into tropical waters and snorkeling with tropical fish in a natural water park (option to swim with dolphins and manatees but was £££). Tulum & Jungle Expedition - booked through Thomson Reps. Brill day out, the Jungle bit was action packed and incl zip wiring through the jungle, swimming in cenotes and absailing down caves. The Tulum aspect of the day- great trip to discover a little Mayan history. This joint trip with Jungle Expedition meant Tulum was quite rushed so we unfortunately did not have enough time to swim on the gorgeous beach there as we wanted to look around the ruins. It took us over a week to chase up the 'free group photo' as advertised in the Thomson leaflets. This was a issue with the Jungle Expedition people, but the Thomson Reps did a great job chasing this up and managed to get us a couple of free other pictures too for the delay. Chichen Itza - fantastic day looking at the pyramids (one of the seven wonders), up at 4:40am for this trip for a 5am start to beat the rush of tourists and midday heat - was well worth it! Got some brill pics. Our tour guide was good but I felt he missed out some vital pieces of info or could have elaborated on a few areas. I felt the tour was quite rushed, as we went on to swim in another cenote (cave). There is so much to do there. We will deffo be returning in a few years to do some of the other excursions and to probably get the bus to Tulum to spend a day chilling by that beach.
"Mexican Service with a Smile !"
12/09/13 Paulrev10 Macclesfield, United Kingdom
Playcar and the Riu Yucatan proved to be an ideal location and the hotel was fabulous, the selection of food and the service was second to none, the Mexican people were the most friendly and obliging I have ever met. The facilities, pool area, beach, water sports and entertainment would meet the expectations of anyone, you could have a lively time or just find somewhere to relax and have a quiet time. The entertainment at night was professional and well worth watching. The whole complex was kept immaculate and if we did have a problem the hotel team responded immediately. The beach is probably the best beach I have seen with gentle slopes into a warm, clean and very enticing sea, it never felt crowded and with the comfortable beds you could relax the day away. My only complaint was our room although kept very clean with laundry changes every day at first it felt damp and smelled musty, the hotel management did improve the situation however I would question the effectiveness of the air conditioning in reducing room humidity. Playacar is a security controlled residential area, you felt comfortable walking around and about 30 minutes walk away was Playa Del Carmen, a busy and interesting town with bars, live music and a buzzing feeling, once again you can walk around without feeling threatened. It does however have the shop owners trying to entice you into the shops which can be a bit of a nuisance. Overall we had a great time and and would thank and praise all the staff at the hotel for their wonderful customer service.
"Very good but not deserving of 5 stars"
12/09/13 Margrove Salford, England
Just returned from a 10 night stay at this hotel. Check in was prompt, efficient and friendly. A welcome drink was offered whilst formalities were completed. The pink and black of the main public area wouldn't be out of place in Las Vegas and whilst it's not traditional Mexican, it does kind of work. Our luggage arrived at our room shortly after we did. The toilet door was broken - as was the safe. The latter was fixed within 30 mins whilst the former was sorted out the day after. The room also had an unusual smell which disappeared after a few days of running the air con. Can only assume therefore that the room hadn't been occupied for a while. The rooms are bright (lighting perhaps a bit too harsh) and airy. Flat screen TV (limited English channels), radio /clock / alarm as standard with plenty if storage for two people. The bathroom door handle broke again towards the end of the holiday as did the shower head riser. These are minor issues though and the hotel will rectify any problems reported but had the rooms had the same makeover as the public areas, we probably wouldn't have had the issues in the first place. Maid service was very good, fresh towels are left as required, mini bar and spirit optics are replenished every two days - towel animals are left regularly (nice touch). We did have to ask for the shower gel to be topped up. Again, this was sorted promptly and efficiently. We ate mainly in the buffet restaurant and found the food in here to be excellent - both for breakfast and dinner. Tried and liked the Mexican speciality restaurant not impressed by the steakhouse though. Coffee / tea in the morning brought to your table and water / wine offered in the evening and topped up regularly by the waiting staff. Nothing us too much trouble for them (or any of the staff for that matter). They work long hours and never fail to smile or be pleasant. Bar service was also very good with premium branded spirits available. Rarely had to wait for more than a couple of minutes for service. The main pool area gets busy and the 'towels on beds brigade' get up early to secure their favourite spots. We saw people heading down there from 6:30 am! As long as you're there by 9:00, beds can usually be found. The beach is stunning -soft white sand and the warm, Caribbean sea is shades of blue and green. Shade however is limited. The beach is patrolled by security - both as a deterrent and to provide reassurance to hotel guests (the hotel is in a gated community so it is very safe to walk around). The refurbishment was completed in July and despite this, there are still a few snagging issues such as peeling paint in the main dining room, missing marble pieces in one of the gents toilets and a number of glass tops from the tables in the bar area. Minor things but not really in keeping with a 5 star hotel - especially when it's compared to smother 5 star RUI - the Palace which is less than 5 mins walk away. That's the thing, there are 5 star hotels and then there are 5 STAR hotels. This hotel along with its sister Tequila and Playacar hotels falls into the former category. They may have the facilities to warrant 5 stars but the decor, grounds and quality of fixtures and fittings mean they are really 4 star properties. Good 4 stars at that but definitely not 5 star.

We stayed at this hotel from 15/10/13 ill 29/10/13. What can i say a lovely holiday! The hotel itself is lovely bright clean and well kept. The rooms are very spacious and light. We stayed in block 4 which was close to everything. Our balcony over looked the pool and lunch time restaurant. The beach is just like you see on postcards picture perfect ,the sand is white and the sea is amazing it is so clear and warm you get to see plenty of fish.If you take some bread in to feed them you won`t be dissapointed. There are always plenty of sunbeds so no need to be up at crack of dawn to get one on the beach or around the pool. The only thing that spoilt our holiday was the torrential rain we had for 3 days and when i say rain i mean it.Stair rods hadn`t a look in.The possition of this hotel is wonderful on the beach but also close to the town easily reached by walking along the beach which is a lovely walk or by a 10 min taxi ride. The town is very nice full of shops cafes and bars so is a pleasant change from just lying around. We also got the ferry over to cozamul one day which was a nice trip out,it is geared up for the wealthy yanks etc that go there on the many cruise ships that dock there. Back to the hotel there are plenty of places to eat we tried the steakhouse and the chinese which were both lovely for a change from the buffet.Always plenty of choice and variety. The lunchtime buffet was also very good but after a few days became a bit boring. The high light for us were the monkeys

We stayed at this hotel in November. We had mixed weather, quite rainy for the first 3 days but sunny after that. We loved the new look of the hotel and thought that the pink worked really well. Excellent reception with really helpful staff. Nice seating areas. Bar in the same area with efficient bar staff. No problems getting branded drinks when asked for. Entertainment in here 3 times a week was very good. The rooms are exactly as they look on the photos. Clean and functional. As everyone says, the shower is open plan and has clear glass. As previously stated this can be a problem if sharing the room with teenagers. We had to use a towel over the glass door. Okay but not ideal. I would describe the food in the main restaurant as very good but not amazing. The waiters were very good. Always cheerful and ready to top you up with wine and water. (Though very over worked.) The Italian and the oriental restaurants were very nice. The Steak restaurant was terrible – it was the lunch time restaurant converted for the evening. There was no atmosphere, it needed to be made more cosy, perhaps candlelit with some music playing. Food was not nice. The staff were lovely but very disorganised though in fairness we visited this restaurant when it was torrential rain and very windy. The lunch time restaurant near the beach gets too busy as a lot of the people from the Tequila hotel across the road come to the beach and use the Yucatan facilities. The food is nice. There are three pools. The relax pool is lovely and quiet with lots of sunbeds, day beds and hammocks. With gentle music playing in the background with a nice little bar area. The main pools overlooking the beach are quite lively. We never had any trouble getting sunbeds. There are plenty of activities going off around the pool area and the beach. The entertainment staff are so friendly and such good fun. On 1 day a week there is a barbecue at the side of the pool. The beach is really gorgeous – white sand, blue/green sea. The sunbeds get full fairly quickly but as we were always up and about early we had no problems getting one. Not very good for snorkelling but there is an area about 10 minutes walk to the left of the beach where you can snorkel. The night time entertainment is mixed some of the shows are really good eg. Fire show on the beach followed by beach party was great. Magic show was good. In fact most of the professional shows were good except for the Grease show which was terrible. Normal karaoke shows a couple of times a week not brilliant unless you really like karaoke. We visited;- Tulum – interesting but very hot - took a taxi Grand Cenote – nice and very refreshing – took a taxi Explore – An expensive day. Zip wires were not as good as they look – Swim in caves were brilliant. Rafts were good fun .Probably would not have gone if we had known what it was like we had a good day but taking into account it was nearly £100 we think the money could have been better spent. - took a taxi Akumel beach – caught a bus which cost 200 pesos for 7 and a taxi back 700 pesos for 7. Amazing day – Fantastic beach. Can snorkel off beach no need to pay for guides. Hire snorkelling gear from back of beach. We saw turtles which was WOW, stingrays and lots of lovely colourful fish. Best day of my holiday. 1 person in our party went on the dolphin trip with Thomson. - Very good- photos extremely expensive. To sum up we were a family of 7 with mixed ages of 14 year old,20 year olds, 30 year olds and couple in 50's. WE ALL HAD A FANTASTIC HOLIDAY. Yes there were a few faults but the good far out weighed these. The staff are excellent and will do anything they can to help you enjoy your holiday. The beach and the pools are gorgeous. The food in general is very good but not amazing. If you want amazing you will need to pay more money and go to the Palace next door. I would rate the hotel as a good 4 star with good facilities but not luxurious You can go out of the hotel and feel safe. Mexican people outside the hotel seemed very friendly and helpful. No one hassles you. They will ask you to buy but will take no for an answer. Don't agree with previous review that say it is showing signs of wear and tear. It may not be to some peoples taste but was immaculate.
"Nice, comfortable trip"

We stayed in Riu Ycatan for 10 days on 9-19 November. We were 2 couples: my husband and I and my father (in a wheelchair) and his wife. It was very important to us to have an accommodation comfortable for wheelchair. It was important as well to have possibility to walk for the person who is not walking very well. The hotel provides both those features. Everything is accessible for a wheelchair and the paths are comfortable for a short walk as well (not too many stares). The service was very good and the buffet was incredible. We liked the restaurants but found them less interesting than buffet. We were in the building 7. It was perfect location. You just make sure your room is not oriented to the lobby. We were in rooms 11 and 14 on first and third floor and it was good. The rooms at first floor are a bit out of dated which is strange since the renovations were finished just 2 month before our visit. Sometime there is a strange smell in a room but open window with fun fixed the problem. There were no bugs at all. The biggest downside of that hotel is a beach. It is very nice but there is not enough of shadowed places, which cause a problem. There was no music to dance before dinner. It is expected from the hotel of 5 stars to have a little dance music in the night. In total, I think the hotel is strong 4.5 stars. If the beach umbrellas would be installed and the dance music will be played before dinner, I would say it will be 5 stars.
"Update does not work"

The Hotel Riu Yucatan was the 9th Riu hotel we had visited and was chosen as it had recently had a refurbishment. Starting with the good points. The staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. The food was very good and the room cleanliness was excellent. However, the update of the hotel was in our opinion a let down. The reception is now chrome, pink leather and modern lighting so it could be any hotel anywhere in the world - no character whatsoever. The bar area now features new wicker chairs which are probably the most uncomfortable we have ever used. The outside tennis courts have been taken out and replaced with a swimming pool and an outside bar area. All very nice except that the tiled area around the pool has almost smooth tiles which are lethal when your feet are wet. They are an accident waiting to happen. The buildings have now been repainted white. Unsure of the quality of the paint used as after only 3 months the paint is washing off leaving the original yellow to show through. The corridors are white so every scuff mark from service trolleys or suitcases shows so the place is already looking well worn. The rooms have been likewise painted white with the original dark brown wood furniture just being painted white and put back in place. In our room the paint was still not dry as proved with paint being left on clothes in the drawer. The armchair has now been replaced with an upright hard backed dining room chair! The electrical sockets have been left and a number in our room were cracked and all were discoloured with age. The place looks very clinical. The bathroom update appears to be confined to fitting a new shower door in plain glass without any modesty panels. Anybody having a shower can be seen by whoever is in the room which is great if you are sharing. The old sink taps and shower taps have been left in place so after many years of having been cleaned daily the chrome has gone and they look tatty. The old sink which was well used and scratched was still in place. Sorry Riu but this place does not live up to the star rating you allocate to it. I have advised both Riu Hotels and Thomson holidays directly of my concern about this hotel and my intention to put my report on Trip Advisor to allow them to address some of my points. To date neither have responded
