"Great place to stay on a budget."
We stayed at this hotel Feb 28th thru March 4th. It's about 45 min from the airport so we used the shuttle thru Expedia. Next time I think we will try using the bus system. It's a non stop bus from the airport to downtown Playa Del Carmen for $10 and then you take a taxi to your hotel. Most of the hotels in Playa are either right downtown or just a […] 5 min taxi ride for about $7. Once we arrived, we were immediately greeted with a delicious pineapple cocktail. Check in was quick and simple. Our room was ready when we got there about 3pm. The rooms are simply but clean. We only had a couple of issues with the room. Our tv didn't work and within 5 minutes, they had a repair man there to fix it. The king size beds are just 2 full beds pushed together. The bed had a big crack in the middle where the beds meet so essentially we ended up sleeping on a full size bed. Biggest complaint was the beds themselves. Felt like we were sleeping on the box spring instead of a mattress. Very hard and stiff. Other problem was the shower had no lip to prevent the water from seeping out of the shower. We finally had to lay bath towels down to prevent a flood of the entire bathroom. Food was average. Basic buffet food but lots of it. I'm a picky eater so I had a hard time finding a lot of things I liked but my husband enjoyed most of all the food. If you want to eat at one of the reservation restaurants, you have to get up and book by 730 or 8am to get a reservation. Grounds were beautiful. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"not that great"
Was okay. They sell you on having so many restaurants, when you can actually only go to the 3 in your hotel and you have to wake up early to walk down to lobby to make reservations. The restaurants in other Rui hotels are the same, and you are only able to eat at the buffet of other hotels. Buffet is pretty much the same day after day and the asian […] inspired restaurant if buffet style. I would not go back to this hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Going down quickly but beach is still lovely."
I have stayed at this hotel 6 times over the past couple of years. It has gone down tremendously since my last visit. I will start with the positive, location on the beach and playa is perfect. 5 dollar can ride to fifth ave and the beach is beautiful! Beds are horribly uncomfortable and our shower was not working upon arrival. Food has gone down, very […] little meat or fruit available, all pasta and pizzas. We were told during the visit the hotel is having problems as they have not paid back taxes, becareful booking this hotel as it potentially could close at any time. Again beach great location is wonderful, safe area. Just plan on spending more on outside food and liquor. Hotel is looking its age and needs to be renovated. Also, it is filled with Europeans who smoke everywhere! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Amazing beach and great location!!"
Restaurant and food was average Very large buffet restaurant open for breakfast and dinner Asian restaurant with reservation. Go early because they sell out. Pretty good selection Mexican restaurant was my favorite. Good food and great selection of apps Steak house very few selection and the appetizer was not edible For the three restaurant you should […] reserve early ... By 9am Service could be friendlier Food was average but with price we paid we expected it to be much better Buffet food was cold often White wines I ordered were usually warm Pool was nice Jacuzzi was not hot Plenty of chairs but if its crowded and you want to get sun save your chairs early Beautiful -spectacular beach!! Sand was like powder and water was amazing. Like a pool 30 minute walk to town Quiet pool and beach. Perfect for relaxing. Not rowdy Hotel room was average. Issues with bathroom No door separating bathroom area and room...just an arch There was a door for the toilet but when you jump out of shower there is zero privacy Mattress hard as a rock so order a mattress pad when you arrive in room Tours offered are about 30% more than the ones at the shopping center 5 minute walk away. There is a kiosk in Playacar Very secure and safe. Gated hotel area high security You can walk to the Riu Tequila in five minutes to check out their night entertainment For a change of scenery you can eat there for breakfast lunch and buffet dinner Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Outstanding beach vacation"
The hotel, beach, and staff were outstanding. It was a great experience I felt very save and comfortable. The suite is defiantly worth a little extra. The pictures on the web site don't justify the outstanding suite.I have never saw a harder working, caring staff in all my life. They did all they could do to make my stay great. The beach was great with […] lots of activities. Water aerobics, skits, soccer. The food was over the top. I can't wait to go next year. Mark F Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Riu Yucatan=solid all-inclusive resort experience"
The hotel staff were very attentive. For every request we had (ie. change batteries in remote control, provide extra blankets) they addressed them very well. The hotel was built in 1997 so it does have that 90s feel to it. Every night they had a different cocktail available for guests in the lobby which I enjoyed. Our party did not enjoy the intermingling […] of smokers and non-smokers. It was hard to enjoy certain areas of the resort being a non-smoker and constantly having smoke blown in your face. Perhaps designated areas for both lobby and poolside might be a suggestion. The hotel staff were great. The facilities were up to my satisfaction. The daily special tournaments were great for my family since they enjoy participating in sports and the staff were enthusiastic and welcoming! My only major complaint was that there was no free wi-fi throughout the hotel. They provided 90 min free in the lobby but people working or relaxing poolside having free wi-fi would have really boosted my holiday experience. Wi-fi was only available if you paid for it. The gym was also quite small. The weight area was ok with pretty good selection of weight machines but there are only two treadmills for cardio and they are older machines. The beaches were beautiful. The property that RIU owns right outside their property is beautiful. Soft whitish sand and blue clear waters. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good but needs work"
The staff was great, the rooms were good, although the bed was hard. The condition of the lobby was not as nice, the furniture was in horrible condition. It is my understanding that they are remodeling this year, if they do, it is a great place to stay, if not, I would not go back. The lunch in the pool/beach grill was at best, terrible, I understand […] that it was better in the main buffet that opened at 1:00 Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Had a blast..."
I travelled alone to the Riu Yucutan from January 10 to 22, 2013. It was my first time in this part of Mexico. I had a wonderful experience, and found the food to be very good, the staff very friendly, and the hotel overall terrific. The pool was cleaned daily (as far as I saw), and I was impressed by how hard the animation staff worked. The beach was […] awesome as well. I would have no qualms in recommending this hotel to anyone. I felt well cared for by the staff, and found the facilities overall good (4 star in my book, though 5 star if you take into account the price of the hotel). I was happy to tip the staff regularly, as they worked so hard, and was much appreciative of their efforts. I will definitely be coming back, perhaps to the Riu Yucutan, though may try a "boutique" hotel in town to get a slightly different experience (though this in no way detracts from my awesome experience at this hotel). Best of luck! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"a wonderful choice for 2 lady travelers"
We just spent 5 days at the Riu Yucatan, and were very pleased with our visit. The hotel seemed bus but never crowded. We never waited for anything, and always had a spot at the pool, a table in the restaurants, and a place at the bar, all with excellent service. I understand that this hotel will be closing soon for renovations, but you could not tell: […] the maintenance was up to the minute, and all the facililties were kept beautifully. The beach at this resort is exceptionally beautiful. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Riu Yucatan - late December"
The RESORT is great. Great pools, great beach, landscape and location. The individual rooms are a little disappointing. The door handle to my room was so annoying - I'd have to hold my mouth just right, stand on one foot and say a hail mary just to get it open. The beds (there were two doubles side-by-side) were probably meant for the Flintstones. It's […] like they threw covers over a layer of bedrock - woke up stiff and achy about every morning. Having said that.... you're hardly in your room (although every appreciates a quality night sleep). Coming out of the room to the landscape, the sound of birds and all the cute critters running around the grounds was a highlight for me every day. The trees throughout the resort were amazing - just beautiful - and the BEACH was nothing short of awesome! Especially because we were there on a full moon - a full moon on the beach! We were not disappointed with most of it... just the beds, really. Other than that, it was really perfect for us. And there were cool shows at night. Earlier in the evening, they do a kids thing - all the kids seemed very happy. And then later, they would do an adult show - like Broadway songs or a Michael Jackson tribute show. Fun... I watched aloof at the bar with our new entourage. Food was pretty good - except the Shanghai Restaurant trying to do sushi. They should just stop trying. But the regular dining room buffet met all of our needs. Quite a lot of good food. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Beach Location"
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Riu Yucatan due to the following reasons, in order or priority: 1) Because we really needed and deserved the break and the luxury of an all inclusive 2) fab location, BEAUTIFUL beach, clear waters, soft under foot and gentle waves (safe for our 2 small children) 3) our kids spent all day between the pools and the […] sea. We really liked the pool area. 4) the staff are sooo very friendly which leads me to believe that they are paid well and like their jobs...because I didn't see many people leaving them tips...which is the usual motivation for efficient and friendly service in hotels/restaurants. We had booked a suite, which was very large but only medium in terms of comfort. When we first arrived the smell of humidity was rather overpowering..infact we changed from the first assigned room to a different one...where the odour was less intense. After the first day, the smell was hardly noticeable. The food was nice and we visited the themed restaurants, which were OK. The asian one was by far the best..... Before arriving we had hoped that our kids would enjoy the Kids Club.....but it wasn't over-welcoming...infact the only member of staff that was a little grumpy, in the whole complex, was the girl in charge. But our two were happy to spend all day in the water. The hotel is going to have an overhual in April.....long overdue.......which should really make this hotel a future "must-stay". The grounds, the pool, the lobby, the rooms, the beach were all beautiful. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I imagine the food would get repetitive if you stayed more than a week and a half, but it's all pretty good so that shouldn't be that big of a deal.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel in Playacar"
Charming hotel amidst vegetation but still beachfront Great staff: we were not pleased with the room assigned and were able to change during the check in. The staff can speak several languages perfectly French included:) Buffet was amazing too: a lot of options and great qualityGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great hotel for the price"
The Riu Yucatan is a nice hotel in Spanish decor. The hotel is very large, it has several dining areas (Mexican, Asian and Steakhouse). The food was good, not exceptional. The dining options were nice to have but again, the food isn't the best thing you'll ever taste. The atmosphere of the hotel is kind of a middle-age to older feeling. You won't see […] many 21 year olds walking around. My husband and I were some of the younger people and we are in our mid 30's. The hotel is three-stories high and NO elevator. The location is really nice in that it is right on the beach! The beach is a gorgeous crytal blue-ish/green color. It is a 90 peso car ride from the hotel to downtown Playa del Carmen 5th Avenue. The hotel entertainment is really great as well (they had Michael Jackson night, Circus show, and Mariachi night when we were there). Overall the hotel experience was a good one, the staff are friendly and try to please you. However, next time I would like to stay in a more modern hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

It was a great hotel, the staff was very friendly. You felt like you were in the jungle as well at the beach at the same time. It was the best outside of the US hotel we've stayed at to date. Only real down side was the beds were uncomfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is very very old, hotel was boring my husband and I are 28. "Excellent place to relax."
We spent 5 days at the hoterl Riu Yucatan. It's was like a dream! Beautiful sorroundings, incredible friendly staff, and great food. The beach and the swiming pool with the towel service is fantastic. The only negative thing was the strong musky odor in the bedrooms, but otherwise, this is an excelent place to relax and have a great time.Genuine Expedia guest review
Trouble with air conditioning. They weren't the fastest at getting it fixed. Took couple of days. And it was hot.Genuine Expedia guest review
Pool bar was great! They do not offer food 24 hours had to go to sister hotel just to get a sandwich at bar time. Pool closes at 7 pm.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Would not go back"

While I loved the layout of the resort (pools, entertainment, beach access, restaurants, etc) the rooms were AWFUL. The air conditioning did not seem to work as one might expect and overall they need upgrades on everything...the beds, the shower, etc.Genuine Expedia guest review
My wife and I have traveled to the Riu line of hotels on many occasions. We are always pleasantly surprised by how friendly the staff is, they are always willing and wanting to make sure you are please. The Riu hotel line has these types of Riu’s; this hotel is the middle one, for both accommodations and price. The hotels its self is set in a small […] jungle area but the entire hotel line complex (there are many hotels in this area) are gated and VERY secure and minutes from 5th with is the shopping area of Playa Del Caramen. Riu Yucatan is a little dated and in need of new features and probably paint BUT we do not stay there for that, we stayed their because they have one of the greatest beaches in Playa Del Carmen (playa car). They also have a great pool area, 3 bars plus 2 swim up as well as enough beach space and sun beds for the entire hotel at the same time. The bars are great, although they do not serve you top shelf liquor unless asked. Lastly the food, it’s of average quality6. The 3 restaurants you have to make reservations the morning of and you should get down their prior to 8:30 am as they fill up quickly. They say that you need to dress up is formal/business casual clothing but what they mean is no cut off t-shirts or sandals. The ONLYT restaurant we dressed up for was the steak house because that was the only formal sit down dinner, the other 2 restaurants were buffet style similar to the large every night buffet in the main dining hall. "Generally a good stay"
Generally it is a very nice hotel, staff are excellant, food good, the bathrooms in the rooms could do with extraction, there was not a light in the shower and the Kaluha had been replaced in the same bottle with a cheap versionGenuine Expedia guest review

"VERY disappointed with Riu Yucatan"
We just arrived home from staying at the Riu Yucatan, and are VERY disappointed. We wanted to come home after the first couple of days. The hotel has older looking decor. When you walk down to the pool from main resort it smelled like a zoo, from the monkey's in the trees. We asked for an ocean view via expedia and did not get anything even close to […] that, as they do not have ocean view. The king bed we had was hard as a rock. The website for this also states you can visit the other Riu' resorts, and only 1 allowed us to visit for a short time, and then they noticed our arm band. It did not help that it rained part of the time, but felt the activities group should have tried to put together some entertainment being were were stuck in the entertainment shelter for almost 1 full day. Shows were just ok, nothing exciting. The overall atmosphere at the resort was blah. Food was just ok. The only positive feedback we have was the beach was gorgeous and well kept, and the massage by the beach was great. Also Nicholas and Lots with Dive Caribe are phenomenal! This will be our last stay ever with the Riu resorts!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Best stay in Mexico yet!!!!"
My wife and I have stayed at a few all inclusive resorts including sandals and we would go back to this resort before sandals. The food is great ( as all inclusives go) and there is a great selection. The staff is great and willing to help. We loveed the atmosphere of the resort with its lush jungle and monkeys roaming around. The only complaint are […] the beds. They are like sleeping on rocks but with enough tequila you'll pass right out:). The resort is in the playacar complex so it is very secure and safe. If you are choosing between the Riu resorts the Riu Yukatan is a great value with its large beach and great atmosphere. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Everything was fantastic! We had the surprise of an upgrade to a suite which was like a small apartment. Bed was a bit firm but not enough to complain. Everyday there was a new surprise to flowers on the bed to animals formed by towels to decorate the room. We ate at the buffet every night and found it to be delicious. Every night was different from […] Prime Rib to Leg of Lamb to Lobster and Shrimp. The entertainment staff was great fun. A different show every night - very professional. The beach was beautiful. Plenty of lounge chairs and water was so clear with hardly any coral to hurt your feet. A lot of activities such as volleyball, windsurfing, jets kiwis, parasailing, and snorkeling. "Ok but not for us"
This was our second stay at this hotel, the service was very good and the staff was very accommodating but the condition of the hotel has deteriorated since our last stay. This is not a good choice if you are looking for quiet relaxation, there are shows every night and you can't escape them by going to you room, we used ear plugs on nights we wanted […] to go to sleep early. If you like to party with other guests and the staff you would enjoy this hotel, it seemed family friendly also with lots of activities and the all inclusive plan. For the most part we had a good stay, but will choose another type of hotel if we return to the Playa del Carmen area. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Poor service and rooms"
The beach and pools are great but the hotel is poor. The emplys are very polite but the front desk was VERY BAD in providing helpful tips / ideas / solutions. When we arrived our hotel was overbooked but they upgraded us to another hotel within their property chain and it was fantastic!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Economy, not glamourous"
It's simply an economy all inclusive resort, which you notice in the lower quality of (hard) beds, (worn out) towels, (metal) keys, (scratchy) blankets, (worn out) furniture (in lobby and room), and (tube fuzzy) tv. For about the same price, our stays at the Iberostar Quetzal right next door were far more pleasing with updated items. The food at Riu […] buffett was average (breakfast was best), but the a la carte dinners were very good. The beverages were limited and not too tasty. Pepsi products and Dos Equis. Staff were friendly, helpful. It was at full capacity, but not crowding on beach or pool. We enjoyed ourselves and didnt feel like we overpaid. It seems like they just build more Riu's rather than major upgrade the older ones. Rooms were cleaned daily, with 2 fresh towels. Beverages stocked every other. The room had hard liquor as well as sodas and beers. It was OK. If that's the price you want to spend, you'll be fine during your stay, but also look at Iberostar Quetzal or Tucan and compare prices because Iberostar offers more scenary, animals to watch, physical activities, better buffetts and drinks. We tried the Riu this time because we had already stayed twice at Quetzal and wanted different scenery. The layout of the rooms and walkways per each building creates a lot of loud vocal and foot traffic past your door. Each has 3 floors no elevators. No great ocean views in any rooms. Lots of bars to order drinks in and out of the pool. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Great hotel for the price! Very good service everywhere we went, and the food was very decent. Very lively atmosphere with a good younger crowd, but nothing too crazy. Wonderful beach! The extra restaurants where so-so and some are partly or all buffets anyways. "Nice trip, great hotel."
We spent 5 great days at Riu Yucatan. Maybe not the best hotel of the Riu family in Playacar (gated section of Playa Del Carmen), but absolutely meeting, and in some aspects exceeding our expectations for the price we paid. Stunning beach, clear crystal water, plenty / variety of food, excellent personnel / service . For few who like to be pampered […] every possible way and willing to pay for it, I'd recommend Riu Palace (next to RY), and for everyone else who want to pay reasonably for more than reasonable services, Riu Yucatan is the place. The overall experience was good. NOT impressed with the food. The food quality was good, but the day-to-day variety did not meet expectations. Was NOT impressed or satisfied with the way the specialty resturaunts were organized (had to sign up for a time). This was very inconvienient and inofficient. Some days the availability to sign up was closed […] after only a short time. The idea of having two double beds put together for a king did NOT meet expectations. What reputable establishment uses double beds in this day and time? The staff was extremely plesent and hard working. Overall would recommend the stay to others, but with stipulations.
