The Emperador is a nice, clean hotel that is gay friendly and in a great location. My biggest issue with the Emperador is that there is ABSOLUTELY NO WI-FI / INTERNET ACCESS in any of the rooms... despite what some of the online travel sites say. Trust me... 3 stays with a bunch of friends so we experienced many of the rooms.

If you're wanting an American type resort hotel, this is not the place for you. If you are wanting a good, clean room to stay in this place is just fine. I don't travel to Puerto Vallarta to spend hours in my room, I basically want a clean place to stay. The shower was great... high water pressure. The room was cleaned very well on a daily basis. The problem with the room was the sewer gases coming in thru the drains. It helped to stuff towels in the sink to lessen the odor but it was still an uncomfortable experience. Also many rooms in this hotel do not have an ocean view or balconies. The hotel advertised that the standard room had balconies overviewing the ocean. No standard room had a balcony. They all faced the street. Also, they advertised that the rooms had safes in them. Again this was not the case. They did offer safety deposit boxes off the lobby for no charge. This is a basic hotel with hard beds and a 19" TV. No internet in the room, available in the hotel lobby. Nice kitchenette I used for cooking breakfast. No in room safe, hotel lobby safe was good. No health club. No pool. Steps from the beach. Always happy to give you a beach towel. Rooms very clean.

We stayed 7 nights at Emperador, 2 rooms. Best parts: very helpful staff (Ian is the best! Daniel & Enoch also) & great views onto the beach below. Rooms very clean. Close to everything in Zona Romantica. With surf sound & music from restaurant below we kept our slider closed, but noise not bad at all. Not good parts: inaccurate web descriptions led […] to disappointed expectations. No pool- but you can pay $15 for a day pass at nearby Los Arcos hotel & get in your swim laps & great kids' pool. Mattresses are rock hard. Slight improvement with a 1" foam topper when I complained. This was BIGGEST problem, one new owners need to address to make this a great hotel choice. Elevator had glitches 2 days in a row, then failed completely. Repair took 2 days over the weekend. BUT they moved my elderly dad from his 4th floor room to a 1st floor suite so he didn't have to face the walkup. Again, new owners need better maintenance policy when elevator starts having issues, not wait for a major breakdown. Internet free but in lobby only- Ian uses hotel PC to search for your needs. Lockbox security near lobby. Great singer named Fred in restaurant Si Senor located below. Terrific nearby restaurant choices nearby, especially Cafe de Olla. Overall a very good choice. If new owners upgrade the mattresses to be comfortable, this would be outstanding. Read more

It was a joy to return to my room in the eve, after a day on on the beach. On last Tues. when I had to go to the airport to return to Chicago, I had left my cellphone and a few other misc pers.items in the desk in my room. I only discovered this after I received my boarding pass and was on my was to the dep. gate, I call the hotel desk and my pers. property was sent by taxi with only about 5mins left before takeoff, I paid the driver, got my property back and I owe a whole lot of thanks to the desk clerk on duty, he went above and beyond. The Emperador has great views and proximity to the beach, the Malecon, great restaraunts, shops and gay nightlife. I walked at night with no problems. Gay travelers can walk to the beach on the south side of The Blue Chairs and stay all day when purchasing drinks or meals, Bring your own towel. location is terrific; service and room was great. Our hot October stay was tempered by the very efficient A/C unit; much better than the thru the wall "window-type" units in some rooms. The building on the non-beach side was closed while we were there....seemed to be undergoing a total renovation....future guests take note. There are hot tubs and sun […] decks on the roofs of both buildings.....tubs have not been in use for years....not sure what the problem is. Feburary stay: hotel had some sort of agreement with a codo property down the street to use their pool; was not avaiable this visit. Property may just be closed for the season, but we really missed the pool in the hot weather. Will definately stay here again, although I notice prices are on the rise. See some comments on the lack of friendliness and service from the desk attendents.....my experience in two stays was the opposite; not sure how they could have been any more accomodating, but then I have not had any problems that needed resolution. Clean, safe, friendly and, in my opinion the best location in old town. Suites have balconies that hang right on the beach; not set back like other beachfront holels in area. Walk everywhere; tons of great, mostly open-air restaurants and bars wtihin an easy stroll. Old town is compact, but walking can be challenging due to uneven surfaces, high curbs, cobblestones and steep streets. Wear your sensible shoes and keep your eye on the often cracked pavement where you are walking. Read more

The location could not be better, the rate is extreemly reasonable (so much so it makes one wonder about the quality) and the view from Tower 2 is incredable! Went to relax on the beach and find the cafe was right on the beach with waiters . This was around 4:00 in the afternoon after a long flights. We had bought water from the store across the street and wanted to get a little sun and relaxed. This waiter asked if we needed anything we said no he was snitty with us . We bought a few things from the venders […] on the beach and was just enjoying the warm breeze and the waiter comes over tell us to leave because he needed the seating for dinner clients. I would of never stayed at this hotel if I known the cafe people took it over. These people are rude . I payed to stay at this hotel on the beach . When I stayed here before these cafe people were not here . I could just relax and if needed food or drink get it from the venders. I spent my sunning time down the street at the small pool but would of loved being on the beach . Bummer . Get the waiters off the beach . Theres seating up off the beach with the cafe area keep it up there. If people want to be wated on they could tell a waiter but for us who don't leave us to relax and we could go up to get what we need. We did not eat any meals there because of the rudeness. I was nervous about booking after the mixed reviews. All was fine, however. Simple, clean with friendly service. Thick towels, sheets changed daily, cable TV - lots of US stations, great shower. AC did not run, but was not needed so I didn't persue it.; it may have just been a breaker. I had a standard king on the street side,which was fine for me as […] I was alone and have been to PV many times. Beach side is all suites; they have neat outdoor dining rooms with kitchens...large outdoor spaces not just a balcony. Street side a little noisy; I wore ear plugs the first night, but then I got over it. Slept with huge sliding glass window open. Room had no mechanical ventilation; got a little musty after you showered and left for the day (can't leave big exterior window open, someone coulod hop in from the hallway). Room maids were great-even washed the bedspread...don't see that in the US chain hotels. No public spaces to speak of, pool is in a coutyard a block away. Jacuzzi on roof of building 1 seems to be permentantly out of order, but sun deck remains. Free: a couple of public computers in the lobby, wifi, lock boxes, elevator, beach restaurant & palapa service. Location, location, location; near lots of charming, cheap, open air restaurants. Not a resort by any means, but a nice little hotel close to everything in old town. Clean and safe; 24 hr desk. OXXO 24hr store across the street for bottled water. All in all, a nice safe, clean, convienient place....very cheap on Expedia. Read more
