"Amazing views"
The view from our room over the Gulf of Nicoya was beautiful. It was lovely to watch the clouds roll in and out. The breakfasts were great and the zip-lining within the hotel grounds was fun. Only negative was the distance between our room and other facilities. The reception was over 1km downhill, together with the restaurant, and it was too much effort to visit the swimming pool! Otherwise a great hotel.

"Nice hotel. Overrated for me."
The sorroundings are amazing, the rooms are big and comfy. Big bathroom with shower and bathtub. Breaksfast is really good. laggus restaurant has an impressive menu.but the food doesnt taste that good and its really expensive. The spa.services are extra expensive. they offer a night walk and a canopy on the site. Not bad. Unfourtunatly the person at the tour desk was a little clueless about their services. the hotel is nice. I just think is overrated.

The customer service was stellar. THe hotel is on top of a steep hill and it's hard to get to town without a cab each way. Our room was nice but no curtains on the windows each AM making it difficult to sleep past a certain time. Bryan was amazing at the lobby.

"too much unintentional hiking / check in disaster"
check in was a long parade of horribles that involved waiting around for 4 hours for our room to be ready, doing the 20 minute hike back and forth to the hotel while waiting for the room, getting shuttled back and forth between reception while our dirty room was re-cleaned. I have stayed in a wide range of accommodation all over the world of virtually every type and I have never waited this long for a room to be ready. the service should have been much better, particularly at this price point. also, the hike between town and the hotel was a pain. If I want to go hiking (and I did), I will go hiking in the mountains. I do not have to do a minimum of 40 minutes of hiking every time I leave my hotel - that is just terribly inconvenient.

"Nice view and I would stay near the top"
The stay overall was awesome minus the last night having some severe issues with a mother and her grown children on our hall way. The area does not have AC anywhere so you have to keep the windows and doors open to sleep comfortably. The staff was great but these people definitely made the trip not quite as enjoyable. The area and town is close by and awesome for any get away for someone who wants to be in the pure clean environment of Costa Rica. All in all you cant please everyone but do not intend on making a peep past 10:00 PM or you will get some staff on your case.

Location and view were very nice. Slightly away from main the shopping areas bit still within walking distance. Shuttle available to transport you to your building as the hotel was spread out. Restaurant was casual and the food was decent. Would stay here again. Saw some wildlife visitors right at the hotel. The only things missing were the ironing board, small bottles of lotionshampoo, and conditione.

We loved the hotel. Great views, fantastic covered pool, and excellent breakfast buffet. Only issues were the cable tv did not work very well, it was fuzzy. "Families not encouraged"
We were disappointed upon arrival when the hotel added roughly $50 per night for our small children to stay with us in the hotel room. This charge did not change the room to a larger room or provide any additional services. Simply put, this is a kid tax. We traveled throughout Costa Rica and this was the only hotel to have such a charge. The best I can do is recommend the hotel for non-families. The hotel is very nice as well as the location.

"Luxury in the boonies"
Rooms are meticulously maintained along with the grounds. On clear days, can see Gulf of Nicoya in the distance. At lot of the Monteverde experience is available without leaving the grounds. Has its own fairly extensive canopy tour with ziplines, rappelling, rope swings. Night walk with Roy taught us a lot about looking for things on a smaller scale. Saw family of Coati's, grey fox, king snake, tons of birds on property. Bedding is super comfortable.

"Our Family Enjoyed It"
4x4 is a must to get to Monteverde. That said the hotel was wonderfull. They were very attentive. The Rooms had a great feel and view. Beds were nice with soft sheets. We would of preferred the Rooms to be bigger. It was a bit awkward to hear other rooms' noise although we were surrouded with families with small kids like us. The facilities are complete with full activities: family-friendly tennis court, mini-soccer, small pool and equipped gym in front of pool to excersice while kids swim perfect for parents. Other stuff we did not do canopy, pool table, hiking and spa are all in the hotels ground. Instead we did Sky Tram and Sky Walk. Our girls are too young for the canopy at Sky Trek but if we go back alone as a couple we would definetely do. Great for adventerous honeymooners. Bring jackets as rain is a constant and mosquito-repellent for tours on the rain forest.

"Best Place to Stay in Monteverde"
We stayed at El Establo with my parents, who were on a Tour Group touring Costa Rica. We have been living in Costa Rica for the past 10 months. When we arrived at the hotel, earlier than check in time, we realized we were in some place special. The front desk checked to make sure it was okay to get into our room, which it was, and a shuttle driver loaded up our luggage, and drove us up to our room. You will want to use the shuttles, as it is quite a climb to any of the rooms, pools, or other amenities. Don't worry, they are quick to show up, always friendly, and more than happy to drive you around. We went so many times that at least three of the drivers remembered what room block we were in. The drivers also took great care in making sure my parents, in their 70's, were well taken care of when we weren't with them. The room was beautiful, although the table with the safe seemed very worn. I don't think it was for character, maybe just not replaced or re-done yet. The view was amazing. My parents had a decent view, but they were not as high up as we were. The food in the restaurant was pretty darn good, but a bit on the pricey side. The service was second to none. We had a great time, and would highly recommend you stay at El Establo!

"Quality hotel with unique layout and great views"
The hotel buildings are distributed up a steep mountain, but there are several shuttles that will take you back and forth from the reception or restaurant to your room. This might get annoying after more than a few nights, but it was nice for two. The ambiance is meticulously clean and expansive, like a four-star hotel in the US. There are no air conditioners, and although we didn't need one in April, I believe it could get hot in the summer, despite the altitude (>6,500'). Fantastic views of the valley with rocking chairs provided in-room. The road to get to Santa Elena from San Jose or Arenal is rocky dirt road for many kilometers.

"Inconvenient"
The hotel room was fine, but the hotel layout makes it very inconvenient to get around. You need to call for a shuttle to get to reception, down for breakfast, to get to the pool and restaurant. And if you are out of the hotel past 10 PM, you have to call for a taxi to get you back up to your room if you don't want to make the hike -- which for me, would've been a 1/2 mile hike uphill. Plus, there's no wifi in the room -- just in the common areas. Also, the front desk closes at 10PM, so there was no one to call when the people in the next room partied loudly past 2 AM. For the price, I would expect more.

"Stay here."
Our room was not only beautiful but so spotless that it appeared to be brand new. The view was magnificent, as appears to be the case for all 8 of the mountainside buildings. Staff at the front desk were great, the food was good, and the location left little to be desired. The grounds were meticulously maintained, showing that the owners are serious about maintaining the El Establo as a high-quality destination. The only complaint is that sounds from the next room come through clearly; in our case, the guy next door either talked on the phone or played his TV loudly in the middle of the night, eventually prompting us to bang on the walls to get him to stop. Given the otherwise high quality of the construction, this was very surprising and disappointing - but we'd stay there again in a heartbeat and recommend the hotel highly.

"Nice place to spend your time in Monteverde area."
In the outskirts of San Elena, El Establo affords good access to the region and a great spot to relax after a day of touring. The rooms are in several buildings that dot a steep hill, so bring walking shoes if you don't have a car, or call for a shuttle to bring you down to the office and to breakfast. The rooms can be a bit noisy since the are all along a common outdoor hallway that echoes voices very well. When a bus load of tourists get dropped off or picked up it will not go unnoticed. Great views from each room, but if you want a resort environment with activities, you will be disappointed here.

"Beautiful place"
This was a beautiful hotel and setting. We raced back each afternoon to watch the sunset from our balcony that we were lucky enough to have. A few irksome things in the room however. The lights were operated by your room key so when you returned to your room the clock was back to 12 since it was electric. Seems like battery operated clocks would be better. Also no toilet paper holders. It is situated on steep hills which would be fine to walk on but poorly lit after dark. Would suggest motion detector lights along the way.

"Great cloud forest in the back-yard"
The hotel is great but the best thing is the forest that is on the hotel property. There are nice trails and the quality of the forest is comparable to the Monte Verde park ( and it is free !) With smaller kids it is the best place for afternoon walk and monkey or coati viewing. It is little under-utilized so I wanted to take this opportunity to make visitors aware of it.

"Beautiful views. Excellent cabin like rooms."
An excellent experience. The rooms and views and grounds are first rate. Service is friendly, but a little slow. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that the wifi worked only in the reception area, which was inconvenient and they claim it works in the rooms. Hopefully that will get resolved. I have already recommended this hotel to several friends and would definitely stay there again myself.

"Nice hotel in the mountain with a good view"
The room is clean and the bed is comfortable. The bathroom is roomy with a tub and a shower; however, the sink is a little bit high and is beyond comfortable reach. The breakfast is free and good with a few varieties. Fruits are good and fresh. They have two restaurants. We went to one of them for dinner; the food is good but overpriced. The shuttles are convenient to bring us to any location in the resort. The services are great and the staff are friendly. The only drawback is no inernet access in the resort. They have few WiFi spots, but usually is not reliable and slow. Overall this is a good resort and I would recommend it.

"Beautiful, but don't expect creature comforts"
The drive to get to El Establo takes you into the mountains up narrow dirt roads so if you are driving yourself, you may want to reconsider. As you arrive into Monteverde, the views are breathtaking. El Establo is a beautiful hotel tucked into the mountainside, beautifully landscaped and maintained. However, keep in mind that you are in the mountains of Costa Rica. Hot water is limited.... expect about 20 minutes before it runs out. Wifi was available in the lobby and not in the rooms during our stay. Breakfast was good, but pancakes and waffles were considered an extra. The staff was very courteous and helpful. "Best Hotel in Monteverde"
El Establo Mountain Hotel is the best hotel we stayed at in Costa Rica. It has amazing views and lots of wildlife. The view of the mountains and lake are superb and you can see so far. While staying there we took the night tour and saw lots of insects and frogs, but during the day walking around the hotel we saw armadillos, wide-nosed raccoons, and tons of beautiful birds. The rooms are beautiful and the beds are so comfortable, the whirlpool tub with Jacuzzi is relaxing after a long day of hiking. Each room has a great view the way the hotel is spaced out on the mountain. The trails through the forest are fun, but so is walking around the beautifully manicured property. However, if you don’t like walking that much, they do offer a shuttle service that was very quick in picking you up when you called. Both of the restaurants were delicious and have a great view. It has a wonderful breakfast that is included and the prices at lunch and dinner are very reasonable, the wait staff, especially Richard and Maria, were very attentive in remembering your likes and dislikes. I have to say as wonderful and gorgeous as this property is one of the best parts was defiantly the staff, especially Gustavo. He is the concierge; he was amazing at helping to arrange everything from tours to transportation when we left to go to Manuel Antonio.

"Uncomfortable bed in massive complex"
The great thing about el establo is the resort is laid out so all rooms have a beautiful view. The downside is the resort is spread out on a hillside over 900 vertical feet. Getting from your room to reception requires a shuttle van, seriously. Rooms have no heat or AC, weather was perfect so we needed either. Just be advised if the weather is unseasonable hot or cold. In room safe is a joke. It's a tiny plastic top load fire safe that you could probably pry open with a screwdriver.
