This was a beautiful hotel and setting. We raced back each afternoon to watch the sunset from our balcony that we were lucky enough to have. A few irksome things in the room however. The lights were operated by your room key so when you returned to your room the clock was back to 12 since it was electric. Seems like battery operated clocks would be […] better. Also no toilet paper holders. It is situated on steep hills which would be fine to walk on but poorly lit after dark. Would suggest motion detector lights along the way. Great and luxurious hotel. Definitely off the beaten path, but plenty of great amenities and beautiful views. During the summer, you might miss air conditioning, but if you leave the windows open at night it cools off enough to be comfortable. Staff is great!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great cloud forest in the back-yard"
The hotel is great but the best thing is the forest that is on the hotel property. There are nice trails and the quality of the forest is comparable to the Monte Verde park ( and it is free !) With smaller kids it is the best place for afternoon walk and monkey or coati viewing. It is little under-utilized so I wanted to take this opportunity to make […] visitors aware of it. "Beautiful views. Excellent cabin like rooms."
An excellent experience. The rooms and views and grounds are first rate. Service is friendly, but a little slow. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that the wifi worked only in the reception area, which was inconvenient and they claim it works in the rooms. Hopefully that will get resolved. I have already recommended this hotel to several friends […] and would definitely stay there again myself. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel in the mountain with a good view"
The room is clean and the bed is comfortable. The bathroom is roomy with a tub and a shower; however, the sink is a little bit high and is beyond comfortable reach. The breakfast is free and good with a few varieties. Fruits are good and fresh. They have two restaurants. We went to one of them for dinner; the food is good but overpriced. The shuttles […] are convenient to bring us to any location in the resort. The services are great and the staff are friendly. The only drawback is no inernet access in the resort. They have few WiFi spots, but usually is not reliable and slow. Overall this is a good resort and I would recommend it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful, but don't expect creature comforts"
The drive to get to El Establo takes you into the mountains up narrow dirt roads so if you are driving yourself, you may want to reconsider. As you arrive into Monteverde, the views are breathtaking. El Establo is a beautiful hotel tucked into the mountainside, beautifully landscaped and maintained. However, keep in mind that you are in the mountains […] of Costa Rica. Hot water is limited.... expect about 20 minutes before it runs out. Wifi was available in the lobby and not in the rooms during our stay. Breakfast was good, but pancakes and waffles were considered an extra. The staff was very courteous and helpful. "Best Hotel in Monteverde"
El Establo Mountain Hotel is the best hotel we stayed at in Costa Rica. It has amazing views and lots of wildlife. The view of the mountains and lake are superb and you can see so far. While staying there we took the night tour and saw lots of insects and frogs, but during the day walking around the hotel we saw armadillos, wide-nosed raccoons, and […] tons of beautiful birds. The rooms are beautiful and the beds are so comfortable, the whirlpool tub with Jacuzzi is relaxing after a long day of hiking. Each room has a great view the way the hotel is spaced out on the mountain. The trails through the forest are fun, but so is walking around the beautifully manicured property. However, if you don’t like walking that much, they do offer a shuttle service that was very quick in picking you up when you called. Both of the restaurants were delicious and have a great view. It has a wonderful breakfast that is included and the prices at lunch and dinner are very reasonable, the wait staff, especially Richard and Maria, were very attentive in remembering your likes and dislikes. I have to say as wonderful and gorgeous as this property is one of the best parts was defiantly the staff, especially Gustavo. He is the concierge; he was amazing at helping to arrange everything from tours to transportation when we left to go to Manuel Antonio. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice hotel"
We spent three days in El Establo Hotel. Accomodations were very good as well as the restaurants. Among the facilities there is a gym and a canopy tuor good enough to be in one hotel. Related to the accomodaions the zone offers several interesting tours near by. I recommend it to everybodyGenuine Expedia guest review
"Uncomfortable bed in massive complex"
The great thing about el establo is the resort is laid out so all rooms have a beautiful view. The downside is the resort is spread out on a hillside over 900 vertical feet. Getting from your room to reception requires a shuttle van, seriously. Rooms have no heat or AC, weather was perfect so we needed either. Just be advised if the weather is unseasonable […] hot or cold. In room safe is a joke. It's a tiny plastic top load fire safe that you could probably pry open with a screwdriver. It was a nice hotel but was not impressed with the front desk. They promised me discount for the on campus hotel but when I checked out, there was no discount. "El Establo is beautiful if you can make it there"
The drive to Monteverde is awful but El Establo was beautiful and the service was great. No air conditioning in our room but the view and activities in the area made up for it. Great location....huge well manicured property. Okay work out facility. The night walk was a bit lame as we didn't really see any animals. The zip line tour was great. The food at the restaurant was awful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Great location that is within 10 minutes walk to town center. Fantastic view of the lake and the mountains in the back grounds from the room terrace. Our room was large and comfortable. The El Establo was a great place to stay in Monteverde. Very interesting architecture, great room. We had three kids with us, and they had a ball up in a loft in out two story room. "Beautiful property but hard to get around"
The property was beautiful and had its own reserve with hiking trails, unfortunately it is spread out over a steep hillside and had very poor parking at the facilities. We loved El Establo and felt very comfortable and safe on the property. The only problem we encountered was the cost of the children. When most properties charge an average of $35 for kids above 12. Several things. This hotel is very large with numerous buildings. We stayed at the top of the resort (900 level). While the views are fantastic, it is a mile to the bottom of the mountain. "Great hotel, but pricey"
Very nice hotel, with outstanding views. Room was very comfortable, except for noise (see below). The property is very nice. Staff was very pleasant. Great experience overall. The real challenge is getting to Monteverde from La Fortuna. "Was it worth it?"
The hotel is the most expensive in the area, so we assumed there would be an ice machine. WRONG.... You had to call and ask for someone to bring ice when we needed it. We had assumed there would be wifi. There was, but only at their two pools or at the reception building.... IF you wanted to use their computer, you had to pay for it..... And we were […] paying $250 per night? To move around on the property, it was necessary to call for the shuttle bus because the property is so steep it was difficult to walk anywhere. "Large, Breezy Rooms"
The rooms at El Establo are larger by far than most New York City studio apartments. Ours, and did all the others, featured spectacular views across the Gulf of Colorado and the mountains of the pennisula to its west. Others have commented that noise from the hallways bleeds into the sleeping rooms. It's true but it's not terrible. And they sound can […] be reduced by closing ventilation louvers. The noise was infrequent during our stay; we may not have even noticed had it not been pointed out by others. The grounds follow the rather steep slope of the mountain on which they are laid out. Vans are provided to ferry one up and down. This served us well when we wanted to explore the top of the mountain, a nature reserve with well maintained trails, or pop up to one of the two pools (the other was just out our front foo) or the fancier of the two restaurants. Apart from the resort's various buildings, the setting is remarkable. During our three days there we spotted three rainbows and were simultaneously warmed by the tropical sun and cooled by the mountain breezes. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Overpriced hotel in need or renovation!!!"
Wonderful view but a very basic hotel in desperate need of renovation and way over-priced. Hotel spead out over mountain side - vans needed to get from one area to another - they were prompt and very helpful. Staff was wonderful, bilingual and courteous. The rooms had no heat, carpet was in need of replacement. There was no dresser or closet and it […] would be nice to have a TP holder to prevent the roll from disappearing! "Nice, memorable hotel"
This is a nice, memorable hotel. Major pluses are the great views, hiking trails and ziplines, nature guides, and on-site restaurants. "Great stay with a baby, missed the mark on details"
This was our first time traveling to Monteverde, and we brought our 10 month old baby with us, so we wanted a comfortable stay. El Establo is located on a beautiful property, only a 10 minute (bumpy) ride to the Monteverde reserve, and has a lot going for it but missed the mark on a few key things. PROS: Offered a clean pack n play for baby (we brought […] our own so we didn't need one) Friendly, helpful staff Beautiful views of the valley Comfortable mattress and soft bedding Soaking tub Large, tiled bathroom Balcony Grassy areas to let baby crawl around Delicious food at both restaurants (we primarily ate at Laggus) CONS: The overall con of El Establo is they have some luxury materials and beautiful furniture, but it is constructed poorly. For example, the shower glass doors were glued to the tile and the glue had oozed out of the seams. It looked bad. There was no toilet paper holder. The roll just sat on the floor. The carpet was not vacuumed and was very dated, along with the wooden furniture in the room. The grounds are very large, so you must call a shuttle to get from your room to the restaurant and anywhere else. It would have been nice to have a little more freedom and not be dependent on the staff to get back to your room (especially crucial when it is raining) We did enjoy our stay. As I said, the staff is so friendly and I didn't mind the outdated and poorly thought out rooms, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone ISO a luxury stay based on these cons. "close to destinations"
The hotel room was very noisy. You could hear every one as they passed by in the hallways (especially rolling suitcases). "a little rustic but lovely"
When we first arrived we were put in a room all the way up the mountain with the wrong bed size. We were immediately switched to a beautiful room on a lower level. The service was wonderful when they were there but the front desk closes at 10 P.M. and there was no one around anywhere to accomodate any needs after ten until early morning. The man at […] the front desk was working very hard and was very nice but he was alone so it was difficult to accomodate everyones needs. "A bit rustic"
We had a rather dour front-desk receptionist (the only one) for the 24 hours of our stay, and unfortunately had to interact with her multiple times. "Wonderful Mountain View Lodging"
This hotel was very nice with large comfortable rooms with a nice view. The free breakfast was very good in the restaurant at the base of the hotel. I also enjoyed the main Hotel Restaurant which was very busy on the rainy night I arrived. The menu was very gourmet with meats in tasty reduction sauces. I took a forest hike up on the mountain behind […] the hotel and passed the canopy ride. You can actually walk back there forever and get lost if you do not stay on the trails. After walking for hours we saw no animals. I was hoping to see a Sloth. My teen daughter stepped in ants and was quickly covered in them. This ended our hike in the rain forest. Many broken branches covered the trails and fallen big trees. Overall a great visit to this nice hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
