"Too much money for what you get."
I stayed at El Establo over 10 years ago when it first opened. It was wonderful, clean, and the best hotel in Monteverde. This time around in July I was very disappointed. Our room was very dark and hard to see. It had a terrible view and did not have the feel of a high quality hotel. They charge $50+ per person per night so my bill went up from the expected $140/night to $240/night. I asked to switch rooms and all they could offer me was a family room for an extra $100. The new room was comfortable and had a great view, but new problems surfaced. As soon as we went in, we were greeted by a large roach in the bathroom. Bugs became the norm every single night. The is no AC in the rooms since the temperature is very comfortable in Monteverde. Unfortunately, El Establo does not have screens on the windows so you either get hot all night or let the bugs in. WiFi is not available anywhere. There are 'Hot Spots' you can access it, but not in your room, pool, or other areas you may want to use it. I used the WiFi I rented from the car rental place. The breakfast was very good, but it never changed at all. In other hotels they'll switch the scrambled eggs for fried eggs and the same for other items. This hotel has zero variety. Pool was nice and heated, but the treadmill is broken and bike does not adjust. Overall I was very disappointed with the quality of everything. You can get the same or better for a lot less in other Monteverde hotels. Best wishes to you.

"Great price and location but with draw backs"
Overall the hotel is pretty good, 3/5 for a hotel of it's class. This hotel is pretty nice, and it's certainly not expensive but there are a number of frustrating cons which would be pretty easy and relatively cheap to fix!

"Great hotel with only a few issues"
Very nice facility. Reception is understaffed. With one person working the reception, I could not connect to the front desk when I needed to. Also, there was no hot water this morning when I went to take a shower. Did not have time to wait around to see why. A shower would have been nice. Also, I asked the front desk how much it would be for breakfast for my family. The front desk called the restaurant and told me an amount and when I checked out of the restaurant, the amount was different and they would not honor the quoted amount.

"Clinical-type setting with no wifi in the room"
I can't put my finger on exactly why I didn't enjoy this hotel because technically everything was perfect. It just doesn't have the warmth and genuine friendliness that I've experienced everywhere else in Costa Rica. I feel like room was nice and clean, had a great view, and the beds were comfortable, but it also had the feeling of a barracks or a hospital. The staff is nice in a "forced" kind of way. Possibly they are so so used to tourists that they no longer connect with them anymore. There was definitely and "us" and "them" vibe. The grounds are beautiful and the food is ok. The spa treatments were exceptional. Next time I head back to Monteverde, I will probably stay in town in a place that has more character.

"Hotel with awesome view!"
We were in the 700 block of rooms which were high up the mountain. The view was amazing and we were able to sit outside on our patio and enjoy it. All staff were very accommodating, rooms were clean and comfortable. Restaurant was ok -- typical hotel restaurant, nothing amazing but no complaints. Breakfast buffet was included with room cost and was plentiful and tasty. No WiFi in rooms but it was nice to have an excuse to disconnect and enjoy a book, my companions and the view.

"Overpriced for the value"
Brutal drive both to and from this hotel. Roads were terrible. I expected a lot more for our room rate but was disappointed to find a dated hotel with 1 of the 2 restaurants closed. No A/C in the rooms and, if you walked back up to one of the higher buildings, you needed a shower to cool off.

"Lovely hotel"
We stayed here for 2 nights. There are lovely views and sunsets. The pool was very nice. Staff were very helpful and accomodating. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The bathrooms have as a very large tub and and even larger walk-in shower. We did the night walk at the hotel and Ronnie our quide was amazing showing us so many creatures we would have otherwise walked by. He had a great sense of humor as well. Being first time zip liners we did the hotel zip line and loved it.

"Good hotel, but difficult to get around the resort"
The hotel was nice, but had a few issues. The extra costs/fees for our family of 5 to share a room were unreasonable. Also, it was very difficult to get to the hotel (the last hour of the 5 hour drive from San Jose Airport was on an unpaved bumby road). Even getting around the hotel property was difficult and required having to use a shuttle to get to the pool and other amenities. On the plus side, the staff was nice, especially the front staff. The views and setting were great and the hotel was walking distance to much better food than was served on the property (We suggest Johnny's, Don Luis, and Taco Taco). Although we enjoyed our visit, we probably would not come back.

"Okay hotel, beautiful view, nice staff"
This hotel is moderate. The views are fantastic, the best part. We had a room with a loft, which was nice, but the rooms are rustic with lots of wood paneling. It felt like we were in the 70's living in Three's Company. The breakfast wasn't very good and very much like being in a cafeteria. Didn't eat at their other restaurant which you have to have reservations for. The pool near the reception desk was hard to see the bottom so I wouldn't let our children go in b/c they aren't the best swimmers. Plus this one had bugs in it. There is another pool up the hill which is much nicer, plus they have a small bar up there to order drinks. Much cleaner and able to see the bottom. All staff was very nice and personable. Bottom line, if you like rustic and not all the upscale stuff it's a great hotel. If you are looking for a little more luxury, not the best place. It's an okay hotel for us.

"One of the nicest hotels in Monteverde"
The hotel staff was very helpful with pre-arrival questions and at check in. We had our own car and were able to park by our unit but I could see how walking up or down to the 9 different units would be tough. The shuttle runs up and down so that is an option. But we could hear it all the time from our room. The grounds are beautiful. They have a heated pool up near unit 5 a d another regular pool by unit 1. The one restaurant used for the free breakfast is at the very bottom of the facility. They also do Lunch and dinner. We did not check it out. We did go to their very nice restaurant up the hill. The food was excellent and the staff was wonderful. The honeymoon suite we were in was very nice. But, as people have mentioned their is no door to the toilet and no toilet paper holder. Very strange. My only complaint is they do not offer internet in the rooms. Very hard to go without when it can be used to find things to do and places to eat via the web.

"OK for the price you pay."
The hotel is beautifully located in Monteverde and is clearly aimed at a particular group foreign visitors (e.g. internal speed signs are in MPH even though Costa Rica uses the metric system). The staff is competent at what they do, but none of them is particularly remarkable, certainly for a hotel of this price range. Similarly, the hotel facilities and cleanliness are, again, just on the adequate side of things for a hotel of this price range. The carpet in our room showed very obvious signs of aging. Our deluxe suite was spacious with a great view, but the furniture was clearly old. While the couches were clean and looked to be in good shape, the firmness of the bottom cushions was very much on the wane. The deluxe suite is spacious and very comfortable for a couple, but not one with a toddler or a small child (the hotel will rent it and you will find out upon arrival). The rails on the stairs to the second floor of the room are as child-unfriendly as can be. So is the "safety rail" that would keep you from falling off from the second floor/mezzanine. Though you are likely to spend most of your time outside your room, you will have to be in constant watch if you a child.

The highlight of our stay was the on-site zip wire canopy trail. The staff were excellent with our two kids (aged 7 & 4) and made the activity much more entertaining for us as adults, so much so we did it twice. The on-site night walk also started early enough for the kids to do and there is plenty if interesting wildlife to see. Yet again, we wish we had another night, we really enjoyed the atmosphere and wildlife in Monteverde.

"Caters to Large Tour Bus Groups. NO King beds."
Beautiful scenery/location - but we found the service to be low. We booked a King Deluxe room for our honeymoon through Hotels.com only to be informed upon check in that NO deluxe rooms have Kings, only the suites have kings, so we slept in Double beds - again, for honeymoon. We did not see any other options in Monteverde so can not speak to whether this is your best bet in the area or not. The surroundings are great though and the property is in good condition - which may be all you really need, just know what to expect on the bed situation and that the bulk of their business is funneling large tour groups in and out.

"Pretty View, kind of odd"
My husband and I stayed there on a "babymoon." Upon check-in they sent us to a room with two beds... We went back and they were incredibly nice and upgraded us to a suite! A little weird that there was no door to the bathroom but the room was nice. We felt like we were the youngest people at breakfast by about 30 years. It was a little weird. We went on a night walk which was SUPER fun. Highly recommend. The hotel was also very accommodating for booking reservations/giving options for things to do. 2 disappointing things: 1) ants were in our room and got into almost ALL of our food. even the fridge. We had to throw everything out 2) The hotel booked us a reservation for dinner our last night. When we showed up to the restaurant there was no reservation. They must have forgotten?

The hotel is comprised of around 9 separate building with each one higher on the mountain. We stayed in the "300" rooms so we could walk down to the lobby and to the restaurant. However, if you are much higher up like the 500s or higher, you'll need to grab a shuttle. The rooms were nice and large but they were noisy primarily b/c the buildings are wide open and have a lot of large windows (fantastic views but the winds which howl throughout the night).

"Not that great"
We just returned for Costa Rica., after staying at 3 different hotels, and El Establo was one of them and our least favorite. The grounds are nice and the location is ok, and we had a large room with a nice view. But, the hotel is quite old. They do not have wifi in the rooms, and only had it in very specific designated public places. If you have a job and need to check emails, if you want to stay connected with whoever you want, or read the news on you iPad, phone, or lap top, you simply can't do that from your room. In our day and age it is ridiculous and unacceptable for a hotel that charges over $200 a night. Also, they have no elevator. We had to carry out luggage 3 flights of stairs to our room. The place was very large, so there were so many tour groups arriving and leaving in buses, so we were woken up every morning by the people leaving the hotel at 5:00-6:00 in the morning.

Overall it's a good hotel. Had a very nice view of the Golfo de Nicoya, the rooms were clean & comfortable. "Nice hotel with lovely grounds"
This is a lovely, but huge compound of a hotel establishment. Luckily the hotel runs a shuttle, which we definitely utilized to get back and forth from our hotel to the reception and breakfast areas. The breakfast was wonderful- a large buffet with fruit, eggs, gallopinto, yogurt, baked goods, meat and cheese. The wifi also worked pretty well, but wasn't available in all areas of the hotel's grounds. We also did the night walk and were able to see pizotes, olingos, kinkajous, a baby snake, bats, and several different insects. If you are looking for a hotel that looks and feels Costa Rican, this isn't it, but it is a lovely place to stay.

"Good hotel with good views."
It is a quite large hotel with few different buildings. The views are good. However, it is quite a bit of walk to front desk and registrations and have to call shuttle for transportation, which is free. The rooms are good size, but lack some basic stuff. There was no airconditioner/heating. There was an open space above the door to lobby with just nets for ventilation. Intially I liked it as we can get fresh air from outside at night as temperature outside was pleasant. However, there is significant noice from outside from shuttle buses and cars going back and forth at night that disturbs your sleep. Bathrooms also lacked some basic stuff like no toilet paper holder. Water was mostly cold except few minutes in the morning. Internet was very poor. They have designated their restaurants as wifi zone but it rarely worked. Actually wifi did work in my room in early mornings. Breakfast in the morning is free and reasonable. Travel desk is good. Location is good, close to the downtown, good walk downhill, but difficult walk coming back. Taxi charges around $3 to bring you back to hotel from downtown. Check in/out desk are not very friendly. During my checkout, I had some charges put on my room which I paid during checkout. I just asked the personell to give me receipt of what charges were made to the room, just wanted to make sure they were right charges but he got quite upset as I asked him details of charges made.

The rooms are nice but need work. The carpets are warn and do not look very good. The only way to get ventilation through the room is through small jealousy windows in the bathroom and one over the door leading out to the balcony. On hot days this was not enough.
