"Average hotel for family trip"
This hotel is old hotel and inside is not as clean as relatively new hotels. However, it is at a quiet location. We were satisfied with the speed of wifi. Continental breakfast was good with tasty coffee.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Had a family room which was only a regular twin room with a third bed squeezed in. All beds were less than 1.8m. Deceptive description!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Perfect, quiet , quaint place for our stay!"
What a quaint get away in Interlaken!!!! The hotel is located a 15 minute walk from downtown, very easy to find. A bit inconvenient being away but there was also a bus stop very close to the hotel, with bus fair included in the hotel charge. The staff at Alpina was outstanding and went out of its way several times to help us. We left early hiking 2 […] times and both times they left lunches to go for us on the table and did not charge us. They assisted us in understanding the complicated train system up to the mountains. We were having problems with our Switzerland bought trak phone, unable to make an important business call back to the US. They let us try their land line and tried desperatly to help. That also did not work, but they had a public phone right there and took time to show us how. The included breakfast was a bit lite, but very Euopean....... and the bathroom was quite small but traveling in engalnd, we were prepared for that!! the room was very clean. The view was spectactular with the sunrise. We had a great experience at the Alpina!!!! thank you for everything!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Quaint with no frills"
We arrived late for check-in due to pouring rain and slow travel conditions in the mountains. The front door was locked and when the reception answered the door, she said that they didn't do check-ins after 11:00 p.m. but she did hand us a key and send us to our room. The room smelled very musty and the towels looked like they had been around since […] the 1970's, but we did get a good nights rest. The building did seem to have a lot of historic value, Not what I expected for the money, but it was in Interlaken and surrounding by beauty. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Stay away from this hotel!"
Terrible room, felt like 1940 with a bed frame that my 14 year old built as a scout project. Shower was to small to fit in and shower and toilet might have been together 3 square feet. My wife was afraid to undress. No AC and mosquitos were swarming. Worst room I ever booked. Breakfast was bad too!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location for convenient sightseeing trips"
Hotel Alpina in Matten provided well for our needs. It's a simple, unassuming place but well kept by friendly staff. "Great little hotel"
Hotel Alpina may not be the most amazing hotel in the Interlaken region, but it definitely has its place here! The female owner of the hotel is very nice and caring, we did not ask for much but you can tell just by speaking with her. The hotel is not too far from the bus station, but if you miss the last bus to come back at night, be prepared to walk […] for 30 minutes (It's as safe as it can get, so don't worry). Rooms are definitely small but there isnt really much option in this price range, you get what you paid for and I am happy with what this hotel has to offer. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Do not stay here"
The pictures of the hotel looked nice enough, but we should have listened to all the other reviews warning us not to stay here. Our room smelled very bad and very strongly of mold. The carpet and rugs were all stained and worn down. The bathroom's floor was the kind of flooring you would find at a public shower. We wore our shoes in the bathroom because […] we were afraid of getting athlete's foot. The towels provided were also beach towels. We were very thankful that we were only staying one night here, and we definitely recommend NOT to stay here. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Not a comfortable place to stay at. Very small rooms. Heat does not work properly in the rooms as it is controlled by the "outside temperature". No phone in the room. Lobby closes at 11:30pm so you cant call the front desk for any help or assistance. I would never stay at this place again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very Comfortable Stay"
Even though the hotel is not in the center of the city, we enjoyed the quietness of the location and proximity to the highway (for those of you who are driving). The woman at the front desk spoke fluent french, german and english, so we had no problem communicating our needs. The rooms are simple, but very clean.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
My wife and I were able to book this hotel via the iPhone app while traveling in Switzerland. Overall the hotel was a good find and the staff was extremely helpfull. The hotel is old and furnished likewise. It's cheaper than most in the area so, as budget travelers, were fine with it. There is a bus stop nearby (Hotel Sonne is the stop for the 104 and […] 105 busline), but the hotel is a little ways out of the downtown area. We walked it in 20 minutes, but the bus service is free with a stay at the hotel, which we also used frequently. There are also some hiking trails right beside the hotel that provide great views of the surrounding lakes and region. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"OK in Interlaken"
It is an old hotel that has been upgraded to include an ensuite in the room. It is a small box shoved in a corner and is quite cramped, although the shower was hot and strong. This was a very nice hotel, the staff was fantastic and very helpful. Rooms were nice size and the breakfast buffet was cold cuts and rolls. While the hotel was located at a 2-3 min walk from the bus station, it was not appropriate at all for a leisure stay. The rooms are very very small and very compact making it extremely uncomfortable to even move around in the room. It was a nice and very friendly place to stay in . The food and drink served in the bar coupled with the service was very good. "Alpina Hotel in Interlaken - right in the Alps!"
We had a great time at the hotel. It was very comfortable and accomodated all 3 of us. We had a wonderful view of the Alps from our room and were able to walk to all the shopping areas from our hotel. The staff was helpful and friendly. The continental breakfast was delicious - the waitress went out of her way to make sure everyone was happy. We suggest […] that if you want to use the bus to travel to Interlaken Ost, wait to take your vacation starting in May. That's when that bus route starts running. "Friendly but well worn out"
12/06/14 Jenny B Bognor Regis, United Kingdom
Stayed 2 weeks the rooms were very very worn out with lots of rugs to trip over in the hallways and rooms, en suite showers had the most awful chemical smell. Couldn't sleep, as the window didn't open to allow air in. The Owner was a very nice friendly person as previous reviews, but the rest of the family were not. The hotel need lots of money invested to bring it up to a half decent standard. Could be a lovely hotel. The buffet breakfast was good. packed lunch was very dry bread no butter with cheese or cold meat, not eatable. The main evening meal would have been very good if the chef hadn't put to much salt in every dish. Excellent wifi We would happily stay there again if things improved.

In August we spent 2 weeks in the Alpina Hotel in Interlaken Switzerland. This was the second time that we had stopped at this hotel. We traveled with "Inghams Travel", a company we have traveled with quite a lot. One of the advantages of traveling with Inghams is the provision of a packed lunch which is useful when you are traveling in the sticks. We love the Alpina and feel very comfortable there. The hotel is clean, and the staff friendly. We were on half board. The evening meal was a very generous with 4 courses, and the breakfast was an adequate buffet meal. We had a spectacular view of the mountains including the Jungfrau covered in snow from our balcony. The hotel was run very efficiently by the charming "Dora"the proprietor and her son. The hotel is well placed for the buses and trains that we use a lot. We thoroughly recommend this hotel and hope to visit it again in the near future.

The hotel's website states that reception closes at 23:00. Our train was scheduled to arrive in to Interlaken a little before midnight so I emailed the hotel a couple weeks before to ensure that someone would be able to greet us and let us in. Oliver emailed back saying that would be fine and that we should have no problems. When we arrived at the hotel at 12:10 at night we were left outside buzzing the door for 25 minutes before we gave up and were forced to stay the night at the hostel next door. When I checked in the following morning, the woman at the front desk could not have been more dismissive and rude. After telling her about waiting outside with all of our luggage and continually buzzing she simply replied "not possible" over and over. I was able to get her to pay for our night at the hostel but she refused to give us a refund for the night that we did not stay there. We were also scheduled to go bungee jumping and waited in the lobby of the hotel for an hour before the receptionist bothered to inform us that the bungee company had called hours ago saying it was cancelled. The service was despicable and I can honestly say this was the worst experience I have ever had at a hotel. I was clearly not the only guest who had issues as I saw people yelling at the receptionist each day of our stay.
"Friendly and basic - a super base from which to explore Interlaken and its surroundings."
08/27/14 Sue R Farnborough, England, United Kingdom
We really enjoyed our stay at The Alpina, which is a family run hotel in Matten, a nice bustling area in the suburbs of Interlaken. A ten minute walk is all it takes to be right at the centre of this amazing town in the mountains, and the views from the rooms are fantastic - we looked up towards the ever-changing face of the Jungfrau every morning. The owner/manager, Dora, is a lovely helpful person who has been running the hotel for the last twelve years, having taken over from her mother - and there is a real family feel to the place. The evening meals were always very good - four courses, served by the friendly staff and Dora herself. The rooms are basic, homely and clean, as well as spacious and comfortable. The beds were so comfortable that we slept like logs. We definitely want to go back.
"Good, friendly family-run hotel"
10/11/13 brasseagle Manchester, UK
This hotel has some "basic rooms", with shared facilities, and some en-suite. We had one of the en-suite rooms. The room itself is a very decent size, basically but comfortably furnished. Our en-suite consisted of a toilet and shower, quite compact but perfectly usable. Good shower (good flow, hot water is hot rather than tepid, hot water available all day rather than running out at peak times). Unlike others, found the hotel very clean, both public areas and bedrooms. It does look a bit careworn in places, could do with a bit of redecoration in some areas. We found the breakfast good, some might find the range restricted but we didn't find it a problem, there's enough to set you up for the day!. We were on half board, the evening meal was good hearty food and plenty of it! Hotel is away from the centre of Interlaken, about 20 minutes walk from the centre, 20 minutes walk from Interlaken Ost railway station, about 30 minutes walk from Wilderswil railway station. Local buses run past the hotel, which you can use for free with the local Guest Card which comes with your hotel room. Service is frequent during the day, but a bit patchy during the evening so be aware of that if you rely on the buses to get around. Hotel has a nice rustic-decor bar, closed on Sundays and Mondays, frequented by local people as well as hotel guests. As far as I could tell, prices were typical for the area. Family run hotel, staff are very friendly and helpful. Recommended.
"Totally missed the mark! We recommend staying elsewhere."
05/31/13 Sarah H Kansas City, Missouri
I usually do my booking based upon reviews and in this case took a chance. Unfortunately, poor was the best I could give this hotel. It was booked through an online aggregator for a relatively reasonable price. The 95 CHF/per night for 5 nights was still more than what we felt was due. We tried to move hotels after the first night, but found the area to be very busy and even the hostels were booked until our 6th night, when we did relocate. The hotel has lovely bones. The large dining room and quaint bar would have great potential. The hotel, particularly the main and 1st floors (of which half appears to serve as the owners residence) is crowded with a confusing mix of furnishings. Furnishings range from overstuffed 80's leather sofas, empty cheap laminate shelving to brass children's cradles covered in animal pelts. It is a little odd. The dining room is large, beautifully painted, but decorated with cheap string lights, paper pom poms and mardi gras beads. Again, odd. It all smells a bit musty and of old cigarette smoke. Often the smells from the owner's personal kitchen filled our room. Our room. The double bed was really a large futon with two separate and very uncomfortable mattresses. The linens and towels were mix and match and not always fresh. To get to the shared bath we had to go to the opposite side of the floor past the owners own residence (curtains separated their hall) but around their own coats and shoe racks. I kept feeling like I was sneaking around someone's home when using the loo. The breakfast is very simple and we recognized the same bowl of yogurt, jelly and hard boiled eggs each day (yes they are hot pink eggs!). We didn't try the meats or cheeses. Breakfast is standard, but certainly not anything fresh or special. We did try a couple of beers from their bar, but the dining room prices were expensive and hours uncertain. We went down the street for Thai most nights. The hotel is operated as Hotel Alpina, Interlaken, but our rooms were booked under BasicRoomsHotel.com. It appears to be one and the same. I would not pay full price for these rooms. I would recommend staying at a local hostel (the Swiss Youth Hostel by Interlaken OST is where we relocated to and LOVED it) and you will likely get a cleaner shared bath and more comfortable room. Better yes, venture into Murren or Gimmelwald and stay in the mountains for a bit more. Before ending this review I must say that the owners can be very nice. The operation is family run and the mom is very helpful. She seems to work very hard and warms up once you get to talk to her. I would love to give it a better rating, but we simply couldn't wait to move on.
"Not clean, not well maintained"
12/19/12 Volga981 Chicago, Illinois
I am sure this hotel had better times, but I was quite dissatisfied with it during our visit to Interlaken. Although it is OK to stay there, I would pick a different place next time. The main problem is the cleanliness of the rooms. In ours, we had some terrible smell. We had some dirt on the floor. Under the bed we found somebody else's shoes. The bathroom was dark. I was resistant to touch anything in there. The owners speak decent English, although we spent at the lobby some time before they noticed our presence. The breakfast was not great. They had necessary breakfast items, but some products were not fresh (like bread). The majority of products were long term storage items (like yogurt). As it was noticed in other reviewes, the building is old and not well maintained. Disclaimer: I am staying at more than 20 different hotels per year and therefore know what service to expect from each of them.
"Terrible, old and dirty"
12/09/12 Berry B Washington DC, District of Columbia
I read a few reviews, I do not know who could have wrote them. It was so dirty and old, I was afraid to take off my clothes. The bathroom is just large enough to sqeeze in. I had two rooms with my family, I would never stay them again. Some of the reviews, raved about the breakfast. If you like bread, jelly and pink boild eggs, it's OK. I would not say that's a great breakfast. I stayed in 6 different hotels in Europe on this trip, 5 were very good to great.....this one was absolutely terrible. Do not stay here. No AC, no screens, many Mosquitoes and other bugs!

We spent 3 nights at the Hotel Alpina and we were very satistfied with our choice. The owner is very accommodating, friendly and very helpful. The buffet breakfast was great. We were also given bus passes for the time of our stay as well as the last day to get us to the train station. The bus station is very close and it's only a 10 minute walk to the train station, close to the mall as well. The owner is always helpful in giving directions. Would definitely stay there again.
"Trip to Interlaken"
08/30/12 sueas2001 Edinburgh, United Kingdom
A very clean and comfortable hotel. 10 Minute walk to central Interlaken, but the owners were very helpful in providing information in English. Expensive but due to the area of Switzerland, international and a good base for exploring the area. Several bars and restaurants within a couple of minutes walk as well as the William Tell theatre. We found 2 outdoor swimming pools within a 10/15 minute walk from the hotel, discounts with the Interlaken card as well as on the local buses - these are free.
