"Really classy and beautiful hotel."
We had a lovely 13 night stay here for our honeymoon. The room was always perfectly clean, the staff were great. The option to have breakfast in the gardens was unbeatable. The days spent walking in the mountains were easier knowing we always had the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna to come back to. But we had some problems. The internet didn't work properly. […] WE NEEDED IT FOR WORK. We took a Samsung Galaxy 4 phone, a nexus 4 phone. A Google Nexus 7 tablet and a brand new Pro Windows 8 laptop. NONE of them were able to access the internet consistently. Laptop got zero data the entire time. Some nights we could connect with phones but other nights it was just impossible. I repeatedly reported the failures but all they did was to try "resetting the internet". I never got a connection in the lobby area and I could see others frustrated with this as well. The internet infrastructure is either incapable of doing the job, or is not properly configured. Either way they need to get a professional to come in and fix it. There were a few other things that I found a bit poor for an expensive 5 star hotel, The TV reception was terrible. The milk for the breakfast cereal was lukewarm, the glasses for the fruit juices were like thimbles. About 100ml. There was only cornflakes and a kind of chocolate cereal, no muesli etc. The pool was freezing, its supposed to be heated but I don't believe it is. The jacuzzi isn't very warm either. cooler than the shower. Shower in room was weak. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The Quinta Jardins do Lago was just what we expected and more.We stayed for five nights and the air conditioned room was extremely comfortable with a balcony looking out both over the gardens and the new town up to Monte. The mile or so walk to the centre of Funchal is fairly steep so not for everyone but we found it good exercise. For those not up to […] the walk the Taxi fare is about six euro each way.The staff were very attentive and even delivered a cake and Champagne to our room on my wife's birthday and treated us to free drinks in the bar, so full marks to them for making the day special. Excellent hotel for quality of food in the restaurant and at breakfast. Staff were without exception helpful and pleasant. Only downsides were the hardness of the bed, and not very efficient air conditioning.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Excellent hotel for couples"
Excellent traditional hotel, very elegant with enormous rooms. Superb service from all the staff.Very good breakfast with a wonderful choice of fruit. Wonderful gardens and beautiful pool. Hotel not really suitable for children although a few facilities are provided most suitable for middle aged and older couples. "Great for couples"
We stayed here for a week mid April 2013. We had come across the hotel's website several years ago and decided that if and when we came to Madeira this is where we would stay, and we were not disappointed. The hotel is situated above Funchal in it's own beautiful gardens, and is a haven of peace and quiet well away from the main tourist hustle and bustle. I booked this as a surprise for my partner's 50th birthday and it was fabulous. The staff were attentive without being pushy and could not do enough for us. Lovely stay Only criticism was the food in the restaurant was little expensive for what it was - but a minor quibble. Maybe more for honeymooners rather than families.......Genuine Expedia guest review
"Peaceful, relaxing hotel - great for couples"
This superb hotel more than made up for disappointing weather in Madeira. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and the room more than lived up to expectations. The gardens are beautiful and provided a peaceful place to wander, sit and read. Breakfast was very substantial with loads of choice - we found that we didn't need to have lunch at all. […] Dinner in the restaurant was delicious - but quite pricey. All staff were attentive without being obtrusive. A peaceful, luxury hotel possibly more suited to couples than families.
Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Gepflegtes Hotel, very british"
"Gut aufgehoben in Funchal"
Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Tolles kleines Hotel mit herrlicher Gartenanlage"
Wunderschönes Hotel in ehemaligem Herrenhaus. "4.5 stars, loved it but with some minor quibbles"
07/18/14 sheldita London, United Kingdom
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here... Wish we could give it 4.5 stars Positives: staff lovely and helpful, Quinta and grounds gorgeous, room with balcony nice, the pool is excellent, heated to 25C and clean, breakfast excellent with lots of choice. It was relaxing and a wonderful place to stay, even with a 5 mth old. Internet connection was excellent and free. We also used the babysitter one night and she was great, highly recommended. Negatives: it is very quiet and generally an older crowd and you wouldn't want to bring older noisier kids here (having said that it's not exclusively retirees as some reviewers have commented, there were probably 5 other young families staying whilst we were there), the children's pool was dirty (so we used the adult one for our baby and this was fine), yes - hair conditioner should be provided in the bathroom as others have written and yes there is nothing nearby. We had a hire car though and it was very convenient for getting onto the motorway and around the island. The restaurant is very good but quite expensive so we ate out a bit... But don't try the pizzeria on the next corner, it's terrible! Overall, we'd definitely come back and really enjoyed our little oasis

We have returned to Jardins do Lago many times over the last 9 years, drawn back to the hotel by the excellent staff, first class restaurant and beautiful gardens. Funchal is a great base from which to do so many activities. Our interest is mainly walking and then ending the day with a couple of hours by the pool. We are already planning our next visit with our family in 2015.
"A beautiful quinta"
07/11/14 ssjcox Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
We stayed here for ten nights for bed and breakfast. Our room was on the ground floor and even though we had a smaller balcony the room was fairly large. We arrived with fresh fruit and water on the table. Breakfast has a wide array of choice from cooked to fresh fruit, served either in the pink dining room or out on the terrace or garden. Where you can see Columbo wake up and wait for his breakfast from the passing guests. There are also some swans and their cygnet who they are very protective of and I would advise people to let them be, and watch from a distance. The pool side is clean and quiet, surrounded by beautiful flowers. Plenty of sun loungers for all guests and only noticed the annoying "reserving with towels" act on a couple of days in the mornings which is unnecessary. The hotel restaurant only serves A la carte, and I found we were rather rushed through our courses, and not offered the full menu. I had only just lifted up the wine menu to view it and was asked what would I like and what the waiter thought we would like...I found this rather off putting. We ate here once and ate out mainly in Funchal in the evenings. The reception staff are more than helpful and arranged tours and picnics for us. They also arranged for a Birthday cake and sparkling wine for my partners birthday, which was lovely! The hotel was spotlessly clean. I would recommend this hotel if you are looking for a quiet, beautiful hotel situated in stunning gardens, it is a good 25 minute walk into Funchal town downhill and a taxi on return is about 7euros so easily to do every night. This place will be quite special to us as we got engaged whilst staying here...

We have just returned from our trip to Madeira and what a fantastic place it is. All the staff were so helpful and friendly and kind. The cleaning ladies were very considerate in their job. The food was fantastic. The hotel is just beautiful. Our room was lovely. The gardens are glorious. Colombo (the tortoise) was just so cute and the swans (in their own wee bit) were scary! My husband and I were really relaxed. I couldn't rate this hotel highly enough.
"Ticks all the boxes"

We recently stayed here for one week for our wedding anniversary. I e-mailed the hotel before we went & asked if they did anything by way of marking our special day. They couldn't have done more. We had fresh fruit, flowers, bottle of bubbles on ice & instead of eating off the set 5 course menu we could eat a la carte on the day of our anniversary. The set menu was always excellent & there was something different to choose from every day. The day we went a la carte, we both had the steak tournados; absolutely fabulous, best steak we've eaten in a long time. As people have said before, the staff at this hotel help make it what it is. How anyone could complain about this hotel I don't know. We did hear, that a while back, somebody complained big time about a member of staff on here & unfortunately that person lost his job. He was married with two children, how cruel & so sad. Nobody had ever complained about him before,& the power of TA went too far we think. However, I guess it shows how seriously this hotel's management takes it's part in guest's holiday experience.

My wife and I have just had a week at this hotel, and had a wonderful time . The rooms are large with plenty of room to sit and relax either inside or on the veranda(all of which face onto the gardens). The pool is great with plenty of sunbeds and the food is excellent. The staff are helpful and polite and helpful. The hotel is a 15 minute walk into Funchal and a 6 euro taxi ride back (the hill is a real killer!! ). Perhaps the courtesy bus could be run more frequently, but this is a very minor point. All in all a great place for a holiday!!
"We felt at home here."
07/03/14 RoryandAnnaWilson County Wicklow, Ireland
From the moment we arrived, after almost a day travelling, we felt very much at home in this hotel. The old colonial atmosphere, the incredibly beautiful gardens, the beautiful swimming pool, were all wonderful, but best of all were the staff who made us feel like members of a family. When we arrived, although we were late, Rubinha made us feel so welcome, she gave us a little tour of the hotel while showing us to our room. The breakfast was sumptuous, (I counted 10 kinds of fresh fruit one day!) As we left, I told the young man checking us out that the only problem with the hotel was that it spoiled us for any other hotel. We would return in a heartbeat.

My wife and I decided to come to Madeira to celebrate a significant birthday. We have been to the island before, but wanted to try a hotel we had not previously stayed at. Choosing the Quinta Jardin do Lago was a fantastic decision. The staff are friendly and attentive and made us feel at home as soon as we arrived. We had a superior room up on the third floor overlooking the spectacular tropical gardens. The room was large and spotlessly clean with a super king size bed. We decided on a half board stay and again we were not disappointed as every course from the five course menu was superb. If the hotel and food are great, the pool area is exceptional, having a larger pool than you would expect from a hotel of this size and a poolside bistro offering an extensive lunchtime menu. The birthday celebrations were made even more special by the complementary cake and champagne provided by the hotel. If you are looking for a relaxing break with great service at a superb hotel you could not do better than the Quinta Jardin do Lago. One final point, don't forget to pay a visit to Columbo, the 56 year old giant tortoise who resides in the gardens! We will be back for another visit.
06/24/14 Marion B Lechlade, United Kingdom
This was a fantastic break. The staff were all lovely and could not do enough for us. We received a bottle of champagne on arrival, as well as a 5 course meal complementary on the day of our choice. The pool is lovely and is was great to not to have to fight for a sun lounger. Towels provided for the pool area is a nice touch. The gardens were fantastic. We would recommend this to anyone who likes a small hotel.
