"Really classy and beautiful hotel."
We had a lovely 13 night stay here for our honeymoon. The room was always perfectly clean, the staff were great. The option to have breakfast in the gardens was unbeatable. The days spent walking in the mountains were easier knowing we always had the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna to come back to. But we had some problems. The internet didn't work properly. […] WE NEEDED IT FOR WORK. We took a Samsung Galaxy 4 phone, a nexus 4 phone. A Google Nexus 7 tablet and a brand new Pro Windows 8 laptop. NONE of them were able to access the internet consistently. Laptop got zero data the entire time. Some nights we could connect with phones but other nights it was just impossible. I repeatedly reported the failures but all they did was to try "resetting the internet". I never got a connection in the lobby area and I could see others frustrated with this as well. The internet infrastructure is either incapable of doing the job, or is not properly configured. Either way they need to get a professional to come in and fix it. There were a few other things that I found a bit poor for an expensive 5 star hotel, The TV reception was terrible. The milk for the breakfast cereal was lukewarm, the glasses for the fruit juices were like thimbles. About 100ml. There was only cornflakes and a kind of chocolate cereal, no muesli etc. The pool was freezing, its supposed to be heated but I don't believe it is. The jacuzzi isn't very warm either. cooler than the shower. Shower in room was weak. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The Quinta Jardins do Lago was just what we expected and more.We stayed for five nights and the air conditioned room was extremely comfortable with a balcony looking out both over the gardens and the new town up to Monte. The mile or so walk to the centre of Funchal is fairly steep so not for everyone but we found it good exercise. For those not up to […] the walk the Taxi fare is about six euro each way.The staff were very attentive and even delivered a cake and Champagne to our room on my wife's birthday and treated us to free drinks in the bar, so full marks to them for making the day special. Quite location away from the town. The bus to and from the town was a god send. We had a lovely relaxing time. The staff were superb. We will go back. (this is not something we say very often!) not an hotel to pick if you want to be in the thick of it!Genuine Expedia guest review

Excellent hotel for quality of food in the restaurant and at breakfast. Staff were without exception helpful and pleasant. Only downsides were the hardness of the bed, and not very efficient air conditioning.Genuine Expedia guest review

Excellent traditional hotel, very elegant with enormous rooms. Superb service from all the staff.Very good breakfast with a wonderful choice of fruit. Wonderful gardens and beautiful pool. Hotel not really suitable for children although a few facilities are provided most suitable for middle aged and older couples. "Great for couples"
We stayed here for a week mid April 2013. We had come across the hotel's website several years ago and decided that if and when we came to Madeira this is where we would stay, and we were not disappointed. The hotel is situated above Funchal in it's own beautiful gardens, and is a haven of peace and quiet well away from the main tourist hustle and bustle. "Peaceful, relaxing hotel - great for couples"
This superb hotel more than made up for disappointing weather in Madeira. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and the room more than lived up to expectations. The gardens are beautiful and provided a peaceful place to wander, sit and read. Breakfast was very substantial with loads of choice - we found that we didn't need to have lunch at all. […] Dinner in the restaurant was delicious - but quite pricey. All staff were attentive without being obtrusive. A peaceful, luxury hotel possibly more suited to couples than families. "Everything we could have asked for."
This was our first time in Madeira, we knew nothing of the Island or indeed it's hotels. We chose 'Quinta Jardins do Lago' purely from the descriptions within the Expedia website and though we considered others we kept being drawn back to this one. Spent 4 wonderful nights here and can now see why the rating on the site is so high. Every single aspect […] of our stay is a 5 out of 5 could not fault anything. The setting was magnificent, the gardens were a joy to behold and the main building was all you could expect from a marvellous 18th century manor house. The hotel provided everything you could need for a relaxing holiday. The location being just a little away from the centre of Funchal, was perfect and as a small hotel it was all we could have wanted for a relaxing break. The staff were most helpful and courteous and delivered on every single request we had of them fo the entire duration of our stay. Will recommend to everyone I meet.
Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Gepflegtes Hotel, very british"
"Gut aufgehoben in Funchal"
Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Tolles kleines Hotel mit herrlicher Gartenanlage"
Wunderschönes Hotel in ehemaligem Herrenhaus. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"A fabulous hotel"
We have just returned from a fortnight at the Quinta Jardins do Lago. We were celebrating our silver wedding anniversary, so chose a luxury hotel where we could relax. The Quinta is ideal, as they have around 6 acres of gardens and grounds, but just 40 bedrooms. There were lots of quiet corners both inside the hotel, and in the grounds. Our bedroom, and all of the hotel was spotless. The staff and service were fantastic. We stayed on half board, and the five course dinner was excellent. You could miss, or substitute a course if you wished. Sensible portion sizes meant you could enjoy all the food. It has been mentioned by others that the average age of guests was 70+. Well we are 47 and 49, and we weren't the youngest. We found most of the other guests to be very friendly. Our only minor criticism was that the bar was very quiet after dinner, but it didn't bother us. Thank you to Ana, Andre, Cristina, Emanuel, Filip, Louisa, Luis, Pedro, Rosa, Sabino, Tania, and all the other staff whose names we didn't get to know. They make the place special. If you want a small, luxury, friendly hotel, this is the place for you.
"Simply the best"

Our first visit to Madeira and we selected this hotel because of the TA reviews. We were not disappointed. What a gem! I can only confirm everything that's been said before. We had room 302 - a superior room and it was just perfect (just like the one in the brochure.) Our balcony overlooked the beautiful gardens and the ocean beyond. (The gardens were beautiful and so interesting - we kept coming across trees/shrubs we'd never seen before.) Everywhere (inside and out) was spotless and the staff were so friendly, efficient and helpful. It says a lot for a hotel when they can be bothered to remember your name! Our taxi driver from the airport (booked by the hotel) was Esmeraldo Caldeira mobile: 00351 91 86 95 873 who was so informative and all round super guy, that we booked him for an entire day to take us on a tour of the island. He was a mine of information and charged 120 euros, which was exceptionally reasonable. We took taxis into Funchal and these usually cost 7 euros 50 cents. I agree that children might ruin the ambience of the hotel but they do have good children's facilities. With just 40 rooms it was the ideal size for us. If we return to the island we would automatically book to stay at the beautiful Quinta Jardins do Lago because it simply is the best.

Having read previous reviews we were certainly not disappointed! Very comfortable hotel in amazing gardens, with a superb swimming pool. The staff were all very efficient and friendly and we loved all meals - breakfast al fresco (most mornings) and very ample evening meals. Could not find a better place to stay in Madeira! We will return.

We stayed in a superior panoramic view room, on the top floor (rm 307) definitely a good choice as the views were stunning - the beautiful gardens with the ocean beyond. This hotel has everything you need for a relaxing and pampered stay - not a place to bring children, although there are facilities, but I wouldn't feel comfortable breaking the peace and quiet! The staff were, without exception, courteous, helpful and happy. Special mention for Lui and his amazing cocktail - the Lui Lui :-) The pool is beautiful and amply warm enough to swim on a sunny February day. Location is excellent - a nice downhill stroll into Funchal and you can get a bus back (number 15) if you don't fancy the steep walk, although that earns you a cocktail! We would recommend that you ask the hotel to order a taxi from the airport for you, and ask for Aldo - a really lovely local man - he will tell you all about Madeira, and for a reasonable fee he will take you around the island for the day, stopping at some 'off the beaten track' places and making a very relaxing day out. What more can we say, exempt when can we go back?!

We returned for our second year to the Quinta Jardins do Lago and what a good decision it was. What a delight. Hotel is beautifully presented, helpful and friendly staff, wonderful gardens with an elegant pool. Very good food, an excellent chef. It is rare for us to revisit a holiday location but this is an exception. We shall continue to return.

Quiet, clean Hotel set in amazing gardens. Friendly and helpful staff who are knowledgable and can assist with bookings and excursions. Great breakfasts in the garden with panoramic views to the mountains, Funchal and the sea. Large spacious rooms with wifi and sat TV.
"A Great Place to Stay"

We arrived to be told our room had been upgraded - a delightful surprise. From that moment on Quinta Jardins do Lago proved why it deserves every one of its five stars. It's quiet, peaceful, unobtrusive but helpful and friendly staff made the stay perfect. There was no problem dealing with special dietary needs. The rooms were spotless and the grounds immaculate It is about a mile from the centre of Funchal - uphill. For us that was no problem but may be for anyone with mobility issues. Its location away from the city centre in beautiful grounds is what makes it so attractive. We would stay there again without any hesitation

Our second visit to Maderia but first to the Quinta Jardins do Lago. From the moment we arrived for the whole of our two weeks stay the facilities, staff, food and surrounds were all all 5 Star. An exeptional experience of colonial service. As gathered from other guests comments. The hotel`s location does not favour pedestrian walking into Funchal. The courtesy bus would be better run to a regular time table (say hourly) without having to book the return trip. In saying that the cost of a Taxi from Funchal was 5 euros.
"Still the best"

This was our second stay in JdoL, so it is now a 'tradition' that we will go every year. Returning guests get a bottle of champagne delivered to their room as well! There is really not much more to be added to all the positive comments, but one thing I noticed is that the hotel seems to listen to its reviewers. The only complaint I had last year was about the hairdryer (tube from the wall); this year there was a proper hairdryer in the wardrobe. I have read complaints about having to pay for cappuccino at breakfast, well, you don't now. Out of seven breakfasts one was a bit chaotic because there were a lot of demands for room service breakfasts, so they were a member of staff short. It was also Ana's day off...but, seeing we were sitting outside, in a fabulous garden, in February, I can't say I was overly bothered. Luis the barman is one of the highest ranking cocktail makers in the world, and they are GOOD. The strength of this hotel is its staff, there is a family atmosphere and the interaction with the guests is brilliant.

A historic quinta (country house) hotel, away from other touristy hotels and the bustle of downtown Funchal, set above the city in beautiful botanic garden quality grounds. Everything was of the best - service, food, rooms, surroundings, couldn't be faulted.
