"Fabulous relaxed beautiful hotel"
Perfect hotel! Huge beautiful rooms with lovely views. Outstanding pool area and bistro - massive pool, great food, could sit there all day. Staff were friendly and attentive, breakfast good. Felt totally at ease and relaxed. Quiet residential neighbourhood, but taxi to town only €6. I expected lovely gardens but was blown away.Genuine Expedia guest review
This hotel is close to as good as it gets. Very tasteful in every way, fabulous gardens, huge pool, every service imaginable. However it's about a mile and a half up a seriously steep hill from the town of Funchal, there is a shuttle bus but you have to book it and be there on time etc. A taxi costs 6 or 7 euros, or you take a deep breathe and start […] climbing! They also foolishly have loud music on two nights a week, so if you don't want that in the background of your room try to get a room as far from the bar as possible. The food is top class, every meal we had was superb and the staff have first class degrees in friendliness. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Really classy and beautiful hotel."
We had a lovely 13 night stay here for our honeymoon. The room was always perfectly clean, the staff were great. The option to have breakfast in the gardens was unbeatable. The days spent walking in the mountains were easier knowing we always had the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna to come back to. But we had some problems. The internet didn't work properly. […] WE NEEDED IT FOR WORK. We took a Samsung Galaxy 4 phone, a nexus 4 phone. A Google Nexus 7 tablet and a brand new Pro Windows 8 laptop. NONE of them were able to access the internet consistently. Laptop got zero data the entire time. Some nights we could connect with phones but other nights it was just impossible. I repeatedly reported the failures but all they did was to try "resetting the internet". I never got a connection in the lobby area and I could see others frustrated with this as well. The internet infrastructure is either incapable of doing the job, or is not properly configured. Either way they need to get a professional to come in and fix it. There were a few other things that I found a bit poor for an expensive 5 star hotel, The TV reception was terrible. The milk for the breakfast cereal was lukewarm, the glasses for the fruit juices were like thimbles. About 100ml. There was only cornflakes and a kind of chocolate cereal, no muesli etc. The pool was freezing, its supposed to be heated but I don't believe it is. The jacuzzi isn't very warm either. cooler than the shower. Shower in room was weak. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The Quinta Jardins do Lago was just what we expected and more.We stayed for five nights and the air conditioned room was extremely comfortable with a balcony looking out both over the gardens and the new town up to Monte. The mile or so walk to the centre of Funchal is fairly steep so not for everyone but we found it good exercise. For those not up to […] the walk the Taxi fare is about six euro each way.The staff were very attentive and even delivered a cake and Champagne to our room on my wife's birthday and treated us to free drinks in the bar, so full marks to them for making the day special. We stayed here for a week mid April 2013. We had come across the hotel's website several years ago and decided that if and when we came to Madeira this is where we would stay, and we were not disappointed. The hotel is situated above Funchal in it's own beautiful gardens, and is a haven of peace and quiet well away from the main tourist hustle and bustle. "Peaceful, relaxing hotel - great for couples"
This superb hotel more than made up for disappointing weather in Madeira. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and the room more than lived up to expectations. The gardens are beautiful and provided a peaceful place to wander, sit and read. Breakfast was very substantial with loads of choice - we found that we didn't need to have lunch at all.
Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Gepflegtes Hotel, very british"
"Gut aufgehoben in Funchal"
Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"A place to relax and enjoy"
12/21/14 Graham L Birmingham, United Kingdom
Stayed here for a short birthday break. I stay away on business quite a lot so always want something that bit better from hotels when on holiday. And this is what the Jardins do Lago did. The staff were exceptional, whether at reception, in the restaurant, in the bar around the pool or cleaning the rooms. It a place to relax and enjoy. Also appreciated being presented with cake and champagne on the big day - thanks.
"Charming and unfussy"
12/09/14 Charles053 London, England
In order to create a semblance of balance, I begin with a criticism. We stayed in the Presidential Suite (rather portentously named, given that it is neither much bigger nor much more expensive than the other suites) and discovered that the hotel has succumbed to the blandishments of one of those salesmen who go around selling "hydro massage baths" to ambitious hoteliers. What we want is not to be pummelled mercilessly in surprising places by roaring jets, but plenty of room in which to stretch out and luxuriate. We actually got a rather small and noisy bath, in what was otherwise a large and well-appointed bathroom. That apart, the hotel was idyllic: spacious, dignified, old-world, and comfortable (does anyone remember the Basil Street Hotel in Knightsbridge?); charming public areas, including a library and billiard room (with a blue-baize pool table, but nobody's perfect); delightful gardens (enjoyable even by horticultural inadequates, like us), complete with giant tortoise and heated pool; efficient, smiling and friendly service; in the evenings, just about the best food that we were able to find in Funchal; the clientele mostly British and other Northern Europeans of a certain age, and all grateful to be there and well-behaved; an admirable lack of organised entertainment (no nightclub or casino), though our delicious Margaritas and Negronis in the bar were serenaded by an entirely inoffensive crooner. If you can tear yourself away, there is an agreeable 15 minute walk downhill past a couple of interesting museums into the centre of Funchal, though not one to be essayed in high heels; we thought there were enough hills to climb elsewhere in Madeira without attempting the return ascent and resorted to taxis.

This hotel provided everything we had been hoping for and even more: quiet, large, high quality rooms with a balcony, excellent (out-door if you like) breakfasts, friendly and service-minded personnel- surrounded by a beautiful garden with a large swimming pool and nice exercise facilities. Not to forget the pool and bridge tables in the basement. Every guest feels taken care of in a special way. We spent four days in this wonderful hotel in November with another couple and are already planning to return next year.....
"Top Quality Hotel"
12/07/14 GJgetaway Croydon
I imagine to be the number one choice on tripadvisor you have to do most things right. This hotel delivers genuine quality in all departments. It does everything right. To criticise anything would be churlish. The head gardener at Kew would surely admire the gardens, and a Michelin chef its food. The hotel is beautifully maintained and its rooms spotlessly clean, the staff are friendly and helpful. The atmosphere or vibe you get is one of relaxed tranquility in exclusive surroundings. I am not so sure as other reviewers have said that this hotel is good for children, the ten days we stayed there weren't any here, I think that if there were, the mum's would feel obliged to keep them quiet. It's a half hour walk downhill, but no "walk in the park " to get into town and easy to use the local bus back up, walking back up would just not be an option for us !! If you buy a local multiuse bus ticket it works out at less than 1.5€ a journey, a significant saving on the taxis, the timetable is available at reception. All information is readily given to you by the reception staff, who will book anything you want, taxis, restaurants trips etc. My only tip would be to order toast when you order your eggs at breakfast because they don't offer it !! Ps just thought of a criticism, I don't like their breakfast coffee.

Just back from a weeks stay at this beautiful hotel. It was everything we expected and more. We stayed in a superior room which overlooked the garden and well worth it. Breakfasts were great, plentiful and a lot of choice. Aside from breakfast we only had one meal in the hotel, not the cheapest but fab, so definitely worth it. The staff are all very friendly, smart and professional. Also the resident tortoise Columbus has to be mentioned as he is special ; he loves people and being fussed over. On the downside, the weather was'nt great, which left us with some mixed feelings about Madeira. However, the old town is great, lovely restaurants and good atmosphere. "Well worth a look for a family holiday in Madeira with small children."
My wife, 3 year old daughter and I stayed for one week. Our stay was fantastic, many thanks to the Hotel Staff who looked after us fantastically. Our daughter absolutely loved the Hotel. They are very well set up for babies and small children. There is a superbly equipped children's play room, swimming pool, swans and a giant turtle in the beautifully maintained gardens. There is a baby listening service in the evening, which meant that while little one slept, we could go and enjoy dinner for two in the restaurant a very welcome and rare treat for us! They do an early kids tea from 17:30 - 18:30, the quality of which was excellent. The quality of evening restaurant meals was superb. Lots of choice, not cheap but I would say good value. There is a good selection of inexpensive wines on a mainly Portugese list. We would definitely to come again!
"Just what a hotel should be"
11/22/14 Wabamik London
We happened to be in Madeira in a week of very mixed weather, most days rain, so the hotel and its amenities were very important to us..we just looked longingly at the pool and poolside area but used them only once. But the welcome from warm efficient staff, our comfortable junior suite with a fantastic view over the botanical gardens, the elegant rooms, nice relaxing places to sit, all was just right. Maybe there is a need for a little sprucing up of the soft furnishings and the bathrooms are in need of a bit of modernising but the basics are right. Our room was spacious, bed superbly comfortable. We ate twice in the restaurant; first time was Ok but nothing special, second time was excellent. I was disappointed with location, away from the sea, when I first arrived but the botanical gardens with sea view, the giant tortoise, swans, away from the hurly burly of town but still easy walking distance to some major sites like the convent of the Clares and the Quinta des Cruzes convinced us it was the place to return. Please someone send us good weather next time...

Our third stay here was just perfect in every way. Location, away from the bustle of the city, is wonderful. Botanical gardens so relaxing, resident giant tortoise and swans and very serene. The staff - some of whom have been there for many years - are most welcoming, helpful and happy. Service impeccable, food delicious and we didn't have the same meal twice in nine nights. A bonus is tea-making facilities in the rooms. We are planning our next visit.
"A perfect place to spend our golden wedding anniversary!"
11/16/14 EssentiallTraveller Tewkesbury, United Kingdom
My wife and I stayed at the hotel from 31st October to 10th November. It was our 50th wedding anniversary on 7th November. We wanted to spend it at an hotel which is intimate and comfortable, with a high standard of food and service We wanted to be surrounded by beautiful gardens. We wanted a spacious room with stunning views. We wanted a lovely swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers to relax. And above all we wanted a hotel whose staff would always greet us with a smile and go out of their way to be helpful. Quinta Jardins do Lago met and surpassed all of our expectations. It has a quietly understated elegance, and an interesting history. As keen gardeners we particularly enjoyed the beautiful tropical gardens which surround the Quinta. What a joy it was to be able to eat a superb breakfast every morning on the outside terrace. We had opted for the half board set menu and although the choice is limited we thought that the food was excellent. In the 10 days we were there we never had the same meal twice. Could it be improved? Yes of course there are things which could be done to make it even better. The bathroom in our room was large and splendid with two hand basins, bath, bidet, and toilet. Unfortunately the shower was over the bath. I suspect, the majority of people, like ourselves, much prefer the to take a shower than use the bath, but we are now of an age where climbing over the edge of the bath and endeavouring to maintain balance in a restricted area on a slippery bath floor is not nearly as easy as it used to be! We would have loved to have had a separate shower. By the swimming pool there is a good sized building which contains ladies and gentlemen’s changing rooms, a small sauna, and steam room (which incidentally was out of order for the duration of our stay) It was all a bit drab and uninviting and mostly wasted space. I do hope that when we next visit the hotel, which we surely will, this area will have been converted into the lovely spa which this hotel deserves. These minor gripes apart we had a wonderful celebration and our thanks are due to all the staff who made is so memorable.
