Just got back. Was very pleased with hotel after room upgrade We booked ocean front, but none of the ocean front rooms were on the end right over beach. - Resort was absolutely packed. Tons of people, everywhere, in your face, no matter where you go outside your room. - If you want to eat decent food, you need to make dinner reservations immediately. Expect to wait in a long line to make those reservations. The food at the regular buffet restaurants is generally garbage. - Horrible coffee. - No policy […] against reserving beach/pool chairs with towels. Everyone goes down at 8/9am, throws towels on chairs and reserves them for the entire day. So lame/annoying. If you get there later than 10:30, your odds of finding a chair are markedly slim. - Not much personal space once you do get a chair. They cram you into pool/beach space. - At most bars, there's top shelf booze, and there's bottom shelf booze options. At the Riu, there's a lower shelf option: all-inclusive booze - which is all that you will be getting. Nasty. - Two sides to the resort: party side and more quiet side. If yer on the loud side, expect to get a nearly day long earful of Gangam style. - Downtown Ocho is sketch. Did not feel happy walking around there. - That said, you're pretty much stuck on the resort unless you are out on an excursion. - Excursions can be fun, but there's not much adventure to be had. The resort offers an experience similar to other Riu hotels I have stayed at. Lots of food, nice property, decent drinks. Tons of guests, tons of staff, noise. Travelers who are okay with a bit of liveliness will enjoy the mixed crowd of families, retirees, and young (and rarely sober) folks. What I really liked was that about half of the guests were […] vacationing Jamaican families. Facilities are nice, and the beach is great. There are a tons of "unauthorized vendors" lurking in the water, but I heard that's pretty typical of Jamaica. Maintenance was very poor in various areas, including: * One working ice machine for 5 floors; I never actually got ice because the working machine was constantly empty. * One of the two elevators was out of order and not repaired until the day before we left. The other one made horrible screetching noises. * The women's sauna was out of order. * Hot water pressure in the shower was extremely low. * Our TV #90s tube thing, remote didn't work# blew on the last day of our stay. Let me emphasize that my wife and I are *not* the kind of people who break into tears over some minor issues, but the maintenance issues were just too many to ignore. Overall we enjoyed our stay, but I can't recommend this resort until it starts taking maintenance more seriously. We stayed at the RIU Ocho Rios 12/15/12 - 12/22/12. We flew into Montego Bay and had booked a private transfer with Clive's Transport Service. It took about 1 1/2 hours to get to the resort but the trip was very scenic and interesting. At check-in the staff were very accommodating in getting us 2 rooms close together and getting us upgraded to ocean […] view deluxe (for an additional fee). The resort was very clean and our rooms were clean, comfortable and everything functioned properly. The bar was stocked with various liquors and the fridge was stocked with Red Stripe beer and various soft drinks and water. The fridge was restocked every other day. We had plenty of hot water and water pressure. The housekeeping staff did a good job and our rooms were cleaned well everyday and restocked with towels. We found the beach and pools to be clean and never had a problem finding chairs for the 5 of us. There were a few locals roaming along the beach out in the water selling jewelry and large cups and whatnot but I didn't find them overly aggressive. We did snorkeling, kayaking and Dolphin Cove. There is a large reef that runs along the resort just a few hundred yards offshore. It was very nice and there was a lot to see. Dolphin Cove was awesome. We book our excursion from one of the vendors at the hotel and some negotiating saved us a few bucks. The entertainment staff was excellent. The food was fine. Try the Jerk Chicken on the beach. There was a show every night, as well as entertainment outside the Buffett room. The beach is huge!! Tons of loungers available every day. There are plenty of water sport options on site, and a reef […] for snorkeling right off the hotel beach. The food options were substantial and everyone found plenty of things they enjoyed. Vendors were brought on site for shopping 3 of the 8 nights we were there, making souvenir shopping easy. We traveled with a group of 26, and everyone had an amazing time. Read some of the reviews and was prepared for a much less quality hotel. I think all those complaints must have been for a different place. We have traveled extensively and comparing to similar resorts this one is on top! We found a tremendous variety of food and never had trouble booking the private restaurants, if you are flexible. The staff, bartenders, […] waitresses and waiters were all very pleasant, upbeat, and tried to please. We did reserve a suite and were very pleased with it. The waiters did say the suites were on the quiet side. If you want more party time at night you can certainly find it, but everything seems to settle down by around 11:00 and I was never kept awake late at night. The room was always cleaned properly as well. Suggest you leave a little tip for the staff - they do remember and are very appreciative. Suggest you talk to Rupert, a taxi driver, and plan a little ahead for some of the local sights. He did a superb job taking us around to areas we would never have seen if we had just signed on for a tour (sorry, Expedia). It was so much fun to have our own guide and to have someone take the time to show us the local plants and culture. Read more

My recent hotel experience was okay. I arrived at the hotel and waited online (30) minutes to check-in, at which time I was told my room was 'not' available; this was 5:00 pm in the evening. At 8:30 pm, I was told my bags were taken to the room and the room had not been cleaned. At 9:00 pm, when I finally got to my room it was 'not' the oceanview room […] I paid for but a gardenview room. When I went to the front desk again, I was told all the oceanview rooms were booked and I would have my room switched on Sunday. I arrived on Friday. On, Sunday, I went to the fron desk and was told the hotel would not know for another couple of hours when/if a room would be available. After yet another trip to the front desk an hour or so later, we 'finally' had our room switched to an oceanview room. It seemed anytime, we had a request for anything, (towels, blanket, pillow) they had to be requested 'multiple' times before received. Overall a good trip but poor service and unecessary anxiety for a vacation trip. We enjoyed the last two days. Read more

The property itself was very nice. Prior to arriving my husband and I were very impressed with pictures of the resort. The minute we checked in, we were told because we were not staying in a suite (instead we had an ocean view) we weren't allowed to eat in the higher end restaurants(Sir Richard and Tushima). Three of the mid-quality restaurants required […] advance reservations (unheard of for all inclusive) before 4pm on that day. We secured first seating at the Mandalay Asian restaurant and were not impressed with the food. It was buffet stye, the tilapia was very salty and steak was semi rare. On the third day of our stay we had to call front desk several times just to get transferred to get cleaning services to change the sheets. When I ask to speak with management someone finally came to clean our room. Upon check out, I was informed that if the plastic towel cards and wristbands hadn't been returned upon checkout there would be a fee of 20.00 US dollars each for any missing items. Had a great vacation at Riu Ocho Rios. The staff and entertainment staff were such a pleasure. They really made our vacation more memorable. The only downfall to the staff is the timeliness to deliver maintenance when we had concerns with the room. The restaurants were ok at best. You are better off sticking with the buffets.

Hotel is perfect for the price. The staff is fantastic. The airline lost our luggage the first day. But as soon as the hotel got it, they called our room and brought it up immediately. We loved the pool bars and the bartenders there. Meet some awesome people there. We will definitely consider the RIU in future travels.

It took 3 attempts and over 1hour for us to find a room. They do not use key cards for the room..instead you are given an actually key and some rooms are difficult to open using the key. The […] safe is not electronic and instead requires a heavy key which is annoying to have to carry around. The elevators are disgusting and need to be re-done. Riu Ochio Rios is not in Ochio Rios or ''Ochie'' as the locals call it..you will need to take a taxi to Ochie from there. That being said: The Riu is well compared to other 3.5 star hotels. My two kids loved Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana but hated the boring program at the Riu..they need to put more thought into daycare and use only females to watch our kids.
