I really enjoyed my stay at San Remo because of the decent price and the great neighborhood it was in. The place is cute and clean, but not having a toilet in most rooms and having kind of thin walls that don't block noise well is not ideal. I will definitely stay there again and just cross my fingers I don't get a stomach bug or noisy neighbors.

In first impression it was a quaint hostel style hotel and the room rate reflects that of a budget minded person. The hotel clerk/manager was friendly and very helpful with the guests. However, the hotel does need some repairs and upgrades. The repairs are for the rooms to have all windows and hardware work correctly. They should have latching door […] locks which would keep the door closed without requiring the dead bolt to accomplish this. They need to replace the mattresses, as they felt too thin, hard and old. The rooms needs need a more thorough dusting. When we turned on the room fan, dust fell off of the blades. The bathrooms and showers are in need some repairs and upgrades as they are run down. The location was just a few blocks from the Embarcadero cable cars and bus routes, which made for easy access to all parts of the city and the streets were quiet. Read more

The hotel was amazing. It was like staying in an Inn during the frontier days. The rooms were quiet and tidy, then you shared a bathroom. In each bathroom there was a toilet room, a shower room and a shower/tub room, along with a separate sink. There are no tvs but there are a library of books and wifi. The San Remo was a great deal. Yes, the bathrooms are shared and there is no tv in the room, but who needs tv while in visiting San Francisco. The bathrooms were always clean and I never had to wait during my 5 day stay to use the shower or the restroom. The personnel was friendly and helpful, they made my stay comfortable.

Avoid the interior rooms. Oddly, they all have windows facing the hallways, which makes them completely lacking in privacy, and VERY loud. Fortunately, we visited in the off-season, and when we asked to switch rooms, he moved us to a more private exterior room near the back of the hotel. Huuuge upgrade, and he was exceedingly helpful about it. Yes, […] it sucks that the bathroom/shower is public, but the shower has hot water with great pressure, and it wasn't too much of a burden. A unique experience that is like staying in a hotel a hundred year ago. I enjoyed the San Remo as an antidote to chain hotels that are constantly trying to sell customers more---there is no bottled water for sale in the room, no over-priced mini-bar, no charge for internet access. The hotel decor offers a nostalgic charm that hearkens back to its 1906 origins. And I thought the locations was great, since it's near Fisherman's […] Wharf and just a block from the Powell and Mason cable car line. I was attending a conference at Moscone Center, on the other end of the cable car line, and I appreciated the excuse to take the cable car across the city. And the room rate was not too hard on my professional travel budget. My room was tiny---just enough space for a double bed, with a bit of room to move around the bed. I have a penchant for quirky hotels with small rooms, and I was unperturbed by this. No television, but I never watch TV when I'm traveling on my own. I was happy that I had enough space to pull a chair up to the bedside table and work on my laptop. The San Remo does have some downsides. It does not have en suite bathrooms. I worried that I would find myself in competition with other guests for the showers in the morning, but as it happened I never had a problem. The front desk is only open from 8 am to 10 pm, so I barely crossed paths with the desk staff. And they didn't have enough irons the first night I was there. There was an interior window, but it faced onto the common hallway. Also, the bathroom facilities were very small and inconvenient. On my floor there were two very small rooms each with a toilet. The two little toilet rooms were barely big enough to turn around in. The two showers were also each in small separate rooms, (approx. 16 sq ft each), with plastic shower curtains hung diagonally in each shower room to form a very small triangular shower space in one half of the little shower room and another small triangular space where you could hang your close on hooks while showering. There was also a sink outside in the hall near the bathroom and toilet rooms. I definitely will never be going back to this hotel. Read more
