"I Love This Hotel"
Stepping into the San Remo is to be transported to another time period--in a good way. This hotel was built in 1906, and is very charming. While it is quite vintage, it is quite well taken care of by a friendly, helpful staff. They are never too busy to answer questions. During our stay, the hotel was filled with European tourists, mainly German, which makes sense, since it also has a European feel to it. Don't be put off by the shared facilities! It's not so bad...you don't actually share in the way you may be imagining. There are several "toilet rooms" and separate "shower rooms." Some guest rooms have sinks, and some don't, but there are plenty of sinks available near the other facilities. Park your car a couple of blocks away in a garage (for which you get a discount through the hotel), and walk or ride cable cars to get around the city: five blocks to Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, two blocks to Columbus Street and a stroll through North Beach, and just a little but farther to walk up Lombard Street. The San Remo is a hidden gem. I'll stay there from now on!

"did the job"
I was in SF for a short stay, alone so the hotel served the purpose fine, and was cheap for San Francisco. The staff was nice and the hotel clean, in an interesting old tenement building which was kept up very nice. Flush toilets with box and old style chain pulls, but they worked. Shared bath annoying but made due. The rooms have no ac nor windows that lead to the outside!! Windows face hallways, which seemed a little crazy at first, but the building is somehow very well ventilated. The rooms do have ceiling fans and they give you a free standing fan. If you like it freezing this is prob not the place for you. But SF is usually super hot so I was ok.

What a wonderful enchanting place. I was concerned at first about sharing bathrooms and showers, but nothing to worry about. They were very clean and very private. Staff was very nice and helpful, I will be back as it was a great experience. No TV's in rooms, so bring a game or cards. Best overnight trip with my daughter.

"Great location for the price."
I picked this hotel because of its location and affordability. Reasonable distance to the Warf and other attractions. Overall the hotel was a bit run down but it was clean and the staff was helpful. Great choice if you plan on being out and about most of your time and use the space purely for sleeping.

We were comfortable and slept well. We had a large fan, plus a small fan That was much appreciated because our room was stuffy. It was no Problem to share the showers and toilets, as there were enough and all Were nice and clean. I would recommend this hotel to my friends and family.

"Charming"
The hotel is absolutely charming, located close to the tourist places and all North Beach restaurants. Very European in style. Creates the atmosphere of old times. Bathrooms and showers are clean. There is no feeling that you share them with others. Bed is comfortable. I did not sleep well because of noise level. It is an old building, so you can hear your neighbor like he/she is in your room. And at about 5 a.m. somebody started moving garbage bins on the street. Hotel provides an ear plugs. If you are comfortable, my advise to use them.

"Just Like A Local!"
This was my second stay at The San Remo Hotel, and I will definitely return here every time I come to San Francisco! The San Remo Hotel has such a homey-feel to it, it is almost as if you are staying at home. The street that it resides on is residential, so you feel as if you are just part of the local scene here, but it is close enough to touristy things--such as Fisherman's Wharf-- so you can definitely feel as though you are on vacation. For less touristy action, you are in walking distance from The North Beach neighborhood, where there is plenty of local culture, food, music, open space, history, architecture, etc., to make you feel as though you "belong to something". The hotel staff is very friendly and accommodating, and I can't say enough about the cleanliness of the hotel (both the private room space and the restroom/shower areas)....everything is kept immaculate throughout the day and night. A special thanks to the Housekeeping Staff on premises....they are wonderful! I loved my time spent at The San Remo.... I can't wait to return!!!! :-) This place makes me love San Francisco even more! <3

"Lovely Easter surprise!"
What a great hotel! Loved the historic elements, but my favorite part of staying here was the Easter egg hunt! Arrived on Easter to find a note taped to the door saying that they had hidden eggs around the hotel with candy and prizes. It was so much fun to explore the hotel while looking for the hidden eggs. I felt like a kid again. Kudos to the management for doing something special for the guests. The front desk staff was also super friendly, especially the man who was working the night of Easter! Hotel is in a great location. Was really happy with the stay and hope to return (and use the 50% off coupon I found during the Easter egg hunt!).

"Pleasant -- but no elevator"
A good price for a room at this location -- an easy walk to Fisherman's Wharf, to several of the cable car lines, and to the very convenient F-Market street car. The hotel is over Restaurant Fior; a meal here is excellent Italian fare -- friendly staff. Be warned, however -- the hotel is a one-flight walk-up from the street; and many rooms are an additional flight (or two) up from there -- there is no elevator. Some of the small rooms have no outside access -- no windows for fresh air -- and, with no air conditioning (though with ceiling fans), the rooms can get quite warm. Excellent connections with Lorrie's Shuttle from the hotel to the San Francisco Airport for about $14.00 per person; be sure to make your reservation at the hotel front desk at least a day in advance of your trip. (Lorrie's will also pick you up at the airport and bring you directly to the hotel.) Most of the front desk staff are friendly and helpful, though an occasional bad temper seems to slip through. For extra money, ask about the pent-house -- you must phone.

"Old and Funky in North Beach"
Staying at the San Remo, I felt like I was back in my old hostelling days. Tiny rooms, shared facilities, and a general communal feel give this hotel charm like few others. The rooms are tiny and only some have sinks, so be sure to reserve a room with a sink if you have that particular need. The San Remo isn't luxurious, but what it lacks in modern amenities it makes up for with a general sense of old fashioned living. If you're looking for a place to stay in bed and watch The Discovery Channel, try the Travelodge down the street. If you want to have a real experience, the San Remo is a great jumping off point. Fisherman's Wharf is about a five minute walk. The surrounding area is full of restaurants and bars to suit any taste or price point. For those who want to go a bit farther astride, downtown is about thirty minutes away on foot, but it'll take you hours because of all of the things to see and do on Columbus street, the main drag leading directly to the TransAmerica Pyramid. In a nutshell, the San Remo is a throwback to Victorian living that offers no modern distractions (save for a washer and dryer onsite). After your long day roaming the streets of Chinatown, grab a good book and a bottle of wine and chill out if your simple, quiet room at the San Remo.

The hotel was located well for both walking to the city sites and getting down to the location to catch the Big Bus for their 20 available site seeing stops to get done in two days. Common bath room was a new experience. I'm glad my room had a sink so I could brush my teeth in privacy. I would suggest the staff have the coffee available a bit earlier in the morning.

"Cute, Quaint & Great Locale"
We stayed just for 1 night to attend a nearby event in the city. While it may not be for everyone, we thought it was darling! It's an old style boarding house with tight but nicely decorated rooms with period pieces of furniture. The toilet & showers are boarding house style, plenty for each section of rooms, & clean! The heated towel rack is a nice touch! The staff is friendly & knowledgeable. Off-site parking is safe, secure , & inexpensive for the area. The restaurant below is classic North Beach Italian. We stayed well past closing with a couple we met at another table from Germany & another country, drinking grappa & expresso. You should stay here if you are looking for an old style North Beach experience! We loved it!

"Charming old hotel small rooms, big hearts"
In a nutshell: If you can embrace the smaller rooms the potential noise and the community feel of this beautiful hotel you will love your stay. This hotel has style. It's like stepping back in time to the roaring 20's. Because the building was created in the age before sound insulation was a common practice in buildings you can hear noises from out on the street or the restaurant below the hotel rooms. Also the rooms have ceiling fans and windows but they do not have A/C. I am fortunate enough to be a deep sleeper and enjoyed the festive atmosphere and enjoyed my stay. (It should be noted that they do supply ear plugs btw) The staff are very professional and the bathrooms and showers were very clean I made a point to check on this regularly. I would like to note that although the staff is extraordinary at the upkeep the showers and sink/bathrooms are a community space and sometimes careless or messy guests can ruin the experience for everyone on your floor. Lets be frank about this hotel the rooms are very small (APPROX) 20 by 20 rooms. Often the room will be furnished with a wardrobe or dresser to hold your clothing. The sizes of room are good for singles or couples not big families.

The hotel room is small and close to neighbors/thin walls; the bathrooms are also shared. If you know this then the hotel is a great experience. Great location, 5-10 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf. Hotel has parking deal with nearby shopping center and decent priced. Also the staff and maids are very helpful and nice. There was a night deskman that stayed up and let us in the hotel when we came after midnight. Also when I was waiting for a shower, the maids pointed out another shower that had freed up - since showers were in multiple locations. Overall I would come back since we got a good price for New Year's weekend.

I don't understand the high rating on this hotel. It is a tiny step up from a hostel. The rooms are ridiculously small and the entire place is crammed with old furniture. The walls are paper thin, including the outside walls, so it's not ever truly quiet. We took sleep aids the second night hoping for some rest. Pay the extra money and stay at a better known hotel. I always enjoy staying at the San Remo, usually for a "stay-cation" when I work late nearby. I like "pensione" feel: the simplicity, the deep bathtub, the books in the hallway, the "warren" of rooms. I don't mind going down the hall for facilities. Great coffee in the morning. However, the mattress was excruciating, something I tend to forget 'til I'm back there again.
