"Flat walk thank goodness"
Great location if you are going to a variety of tourist attractions. In the nice flat part of town. Bar in the restaurant below is fantastic with great people. If you like a big fancy room with a TV because you plan on being in the room alot of the trip then do NOT stay here, but if you plan on spending your day in the city and using this as a place […] to crash at night it is perfect. Great location-close to the pier! Great price! Adorable, quaint hotel. I would definitely stay here again. Staff friendly and helpful. Very clean.Genuine Expedia guest review
"It was an adventure alright."
San Remo Hotel rocks. It has a colorful history (according to research it is haunted! Must have been one story up since I slept like a baby.), a great location (a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf and the Cable Car Stop), interesting and different restroom/shower facilities (yes, they are not in the room but down the hall so bring a robe). The staff […] was accommodating and very polite. The rooms were quaint and clean. I loved every second of my stay. The best thing was the price. I would recommend this hotel to any and all my friends who are willing and physically able to appreciate the adventure. I can't wait to return. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"charming building but ho-hum room"
For the price it was OK. I was trying to economize. My single room was a bit small and bare. It was near the toilets and shower rooms, so people were going in and out of there a lot. That wasn't fortunate. On my last night the people next door came back to their room late and started talking. It sounded like they were IN my room. Thin walls. Even so, […] I would consider staying again. It's not sterile and cold like a motel. It's quirky and has character like a Bed and Breakfast. The other rooms seemed better located. Had an amazing stay at the San Remo! The staff was just a delight and very helpful. The rooms are small but I already excepted that and they are very clean. The communal bathes were maintained extremely well. Will be staying here every time we come to San Francisco in the future. "European style, slice of paradise..."
Location, location, location. We loved the antique feel of this hotel and really enjoyed our stay here. The hotel is filled with great antiques and has the feel of an older friends home. If you don't mind shared bathrooms (never really had a problem with that) then this place is for you. "Gem of SF"
Whenever we visit SF, we always stay at the San Remo. It's like being in Europe -- interesting, funky in the best possible way. The hotel is family owned and staff are really friendly. The bathrooms are private and clean; we don't mind having to go down the hall. Because the hotel is very old fashioned, which is part of its charm, the rooms are small, […] and the beds seem pretty basic (no pillow tops here!) And best of all, the price cannot be beat. If you like staying at interesting places, rather than your basic chains, stay at the San Remo. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Loved trying quaint"
Never stayed in a hotel without phones, television or bathrooms in my room. This was a unique experience and one I will look for again. The rate was the most reasonable on the internet and value was excellent. The staff was extremely helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
good place for the money. expecting sharing restroom and shower rooms, the hotels was nice. There is no elevator and wireless signal was too weak to do anything.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Neighborhood romantic gem"
We picked the location due to its walking proximity to North Beach and Fisherman's Wharf; we were surprised at how well designed the interior spaces where. It felt like visiting a distant friend's home rather than a hotel. This is our new destination for get-away stays.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Retro Stay close to the Wharf"
very quaint ! my wife and i enjoy these type of hotels we have no problems sharing toilet rooms and showers-actually we never waited or had anyone waiting on us expect the room to be smaller than usual, and also no TV and no phone why watch TV in SF ? coffee in the am, books and magazines to read if you have time the italian restaurant next to hotel […] was fabulous-great service great food the bartenders were very talkative and the olympics were on during our visit we will stay again next time we are in SF Please go here - it's also historical ! "Cute, quirky hotel in a great spot!"
Really cute little hotel on a quiet street in a good neighborhood. Staff were friendly, everything was basic but clean, and the price can't be beat! Maybe not the spot to stay if you plan to spend a lot of time in your hotel room but a great base for exploring the city.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hotel is a great location. Great for an entirely different experience than the normal chain hotel. Must be ok sharing a bathroom/shower down the hall.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Budget hotel in decent location"
Room was decent, but adjacent to shared bathrooms - toilets were leaky, so the noise was constant. Also, shared toilets are unisex, so cleanliness around the commode is an issue.Genuine Expedia guest review
I Spent 2 nights here and loved it. Very friendly staff, adorable rooms, great surrounding neighborhoods with great restaurants and cafés.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Walking distance to Fisherman's Warf"
I had a late flight to SF and arrived to the hotel at 2am. I called the number on listed on the door front door and the concierge opened the door immediately. The room I stayed in was small, but just enough space to sleep and to keep my luggage. The building was built not too long after the earthquake of 1906, so the size was expected. A space heater […] was in my room, so the temperature was comfortable. There are two community showers, two sinks, and two private toilets. The bathrooms were clean. The walls are thin, those who woke up early were heard in the halls and in the bathrooms. Coffee was set out on the main floor around 830am. Friendly staff. I was given a key to open the front door to come and go as I please. The hotel is five blocks from Fisherman's Warf, Pier 39, Ferry to Alcatraz, and Boudin's Bakery, famous for their sour dough bread. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"attentive and very friendly staff"
Historical, cozy, and cute hotel. We're not usually into sharing a bath, however, the staff was constantly attending to this part of the hotel and they made us feel like it was our private bath; CLEAN. Close to North Beach/Warf so walking was easy. 5 stars from us. John & Terri Rossi Lake Oswego ORGenuine Expedia guest review
If I only had one word to describe this hotel, it would be "Noir." The San Remo had the feeling of a 1920s crime novel. The staff was very helpfull, and the rooms clean. If you are looking for all the amenities, we have become so accustomed to, this hotel is not for you. Not all rooms have phones, or sinks, or even restrooms. There are shared restrooms […] and showers. The amenities notwithstanding, You wont find a hotel this close to Fisherman's Warf at such a reasonable price. "Good position, but the room is too tiny."
Every other day 8AM, there will be trash remove which generate TONS of noise, and you won't be able to sleep if your room is close to the alley. No bathroom in the room, only public bathroom. "Within walking distance of everything"
I don't like that parking is not free. I was told I could pay a discounted rate for parking at the front desk, but didn't realize they do not open until 8am and I had to leave by 7am so I ended up paying a high price for parking.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not your usual hotel"
This is not the typical type of hotel I usually stay in, but then again, San Francisco is not your typical boring American city. The hotel is pretty cool, in a great neighborhood about 4-5 blocks from the Wharf, far enough from tourists. The walk is easy down to the Wharf. Room was super tiny and uncomfortable for the one I chose which was the only […] available option on this website when I booked it. I should have asked to upgrade to get a bigger room when I checked in. With all the side tables and antiques they place in every room, some of the rooms just don't give you much space to walk alongside the beds, anywhere to place your luggage flat to access your clothing conveniently or much less turn around. Bed was terribly uncomfortable as many other reviewers suggest. Pillow was flat and made it hard to get comfortable. I grew up with a firm mattress as a kid and this mattress was much harder than that. The community bathroom/showers takes a little getting used to, but by the last couple days of my 4 day, 3 night stay...it didn't bother me anymore. My room was close to the bathroom and front desk on the 2nd floor. The coffee and/or hot chocolate in the morning before you walk outside on a chilly morning is a very nice touch. On a Monday morning, which apparently is trash day, if your room is along the south wall of the building, adjacent to the little driveway/alley, you will hear loud noises, that is just residents rolling their trash cans out to the street. "GREAT EXPERIENCE, but be aware of ............"
If you arrive after 10 pm, the hotel´s door will be locked and will be nobody there to open it for you. Have a cell phone available and charged to call at a number you will find posted on that door. Otherwise, that could be a HUGE bummer. Expedia people or the hotel staff NEVER said anything about this possible and really common situation. We arrived […] at around 10 pm and we were left there, outside the hotel, in the middle of a lonely street. My cell phone battery had died hours ago. Still, we were lucky. A Hispanic guy, really, really friendly, came out from a restaurant, after his work hours. He used his cell phone to call the hotel people. This helped us avoid what could have been an UGLY NIGHTMARE. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We spent 4 nights at this hotel with a shared bath. We decided that we were too old to do shared bath again.Genuine Expedia guest review
Just a few blocks away from Fisherman's Wharf in a quiet and safe part of town with plenty of restaurants within a short radius. This hotel is an old wooden building with tiny rooms and shared bathroom facilities. Good if you want something a step up from a hostel, but probably not the best hotel if you have kids.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best deal in town, if you can do stairs."
Nice, clean, affordable boutique hotel in a safe neighborhood one block from the cable car line. The shared bathrooms & showers were always clean and most rooms have a sink. One complaint was the hard bed but I was so tired every night that it didn't matter. Also, you must be able to do stairs since there is no elevator.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Cheap-European style hotel."
The hotel has a great location near Fisherman's Wharf, and has a very European flavor to it. It's nice, as long as you don't come in expecting some large corporate style hotel with all the modern things. There's no TV in the room. The beds and furniture aren't the newest. The people at reception don't understand the concept of early check in (though […] they're nice enough about storing luggage in the manager's office while you go about town waiting to check in). The toilets and showers are shared. There isn't much in the way of sound-proofing, so you'll hear any conversations in neighboring rooms even if they're not raiding their voices. So why did I like it? It's got a certain charm to it. You can help yourself to coffee, ice water, even chocolate brownies at reception. There are interesting old photos, and other stuff all over the walls, even plants growing around the place. You feel you are staying in a place with character and rough around the edges charm. And of course it's cheaper than anything else you're likely to find in such a good location. They left us an offer in our room on the day before departure: $50 for another night if we wanted it. We couldn't stay, but would have considered it under other circumstances. The wireless internet connection is free for everyone (so you don't need an expedia coupon for it), and mostly it's sufficient, except in the mid-evening when too many people are trying to use it. Other times we could watch our IPAD Netflix without hitch. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great for a modern traveler"
What an awesome find! Great service, VERY clean, excellent location - if you can deal with sharing a toilet/shower, it's an AMAZING place to stay. People are friendly with great recommendations - other patrons were very helpful and friendly as well. HIGHLY recommend! Light on amenities, but for the price, it's can't be beat.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Quirky and Convenient!"
We have stayed at the San Remo twice now and both times enjoyed our time. The place is quirky to say the least - a warren of little rooms and funny nooks and crannies filled with books and oddities (the hotel was decorated for Halloween). The rooms are small and a little worn, but the bathrooms are updated and kept very clean. Reminiscent of an old […] fashioned boarding house, the rooms are all small and close together (they give you earplugs for a reason). That being said, the location can't be beat - it's walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and the Ferry Building. At the price, I would say this is an excellent deal overall. "Convenient but Dated"
The hotel was in a great location, close to the Fisherman's wharf and walking distance to any form of transportation. The hotel itself was very quaint. Tiny rooms with no air conditioning, so be careful if you're planning on being in SF during a heat wave, like we were. The staff were all very nice. The communal bathrooms were totally fine, but felt […] a bit like a college dorm style. Very nice, but to be considered if you're looking for a private, relaxing trip. Was close to son who lives in the area. Hotel has nice feel, very friendly. Super restaurant next door.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The San Remo is a nicely situated hotel in the back streets of North Beach. The rooms are very small with barely enough room to move around with your luggage out. Some rooms come with sinks, others don't. For the most part the hotel is quiet and so is the neighbourhood. However the walls are paper thin and for the first night of our stay we had some […] inconsiderate 20-somethings partying next door all night long. When we mentioned it to the front desk the next morning we received a simple apology and were told that they "may" be checking out in the morning. Fortunately for us they did and our 2nd night was much quieter. However the comfort of the beds and pillows left much to be desired. When we booked we were aware that there were communal bathrooms. This did not bother us, however the hotel appeared to be fully booked and the amenities were only cleaned and replenished once a day. This meant that towards the end of the evening and first thing in the morning they were filthy, however if you were lucky the toilets might still have some toilet paper left. Over all the hotel wasn't terrible, for its price it was reasonable although the bathroom situation was less than ideal. I would suggest this hotel if you only needed to stay 1 or 2 nights and you didn't need the comforts of a nicer hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
