"Budget hotel in decent location"
Room was decent, but adjacent to shared bathrooms - toilets were leaky, so the noise was constant. Also, shared toilets are unisex, so cleanliness around the commode is an issue.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Walking distance to Fisherman's Warf"
I had a late flight to SF and arrived to the hotel at 2am. I called the number on listed on the door front door and the concierge opened the door immediately. The room I stayed in was small, but just enough space to sleep and to keep my luggage. The building was built not too long after the earthquake of 1906, so the size was expected. A space heater […] was in my room, so the temperature was comfortable. There are two community showers, two sinks, and two private toilets. The bathrooms were clean. The walls are thin, those who woke up early were heard in the halls and in the bathrooms. Coffee was set out on the main floor around 830am. Friendly staff. I was given a key to open the front door to come and go as I please. The hotel is five blocks from Fisherman's Warf, Pier 39, Ferry to Alcatraz, and Boudin's Bakery, famous for their sour dough bread. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"attentive and very friendly staff"
Historical, cozy, and cute hotel. We're not usually into sharing a bath, however, the staff was constantly attending to this part of the hotel and they made us feel like it was our private bath; CLEAN. Close to North Beach/Warf so walking was easy. 5 stars from us. John & Terri Rossi Lake Oswego ORGenuine Expedia guest review
If I only had one word to describe this hotel, it would be "Noir." The San Remo had the feeling of a 1920s crime novel. The staff was very helpfull, and the rooms clean. If you are looking for all the amenities, we have become so accustomed to, this hotel is not for you. Not all rooms have phones, or sinks, or even restrooms. There are shared restrooms […] and showers. The amenities notwithstanding, You wont find a hotel this close to Fisherman's Warf at such a reasonable price. This place has real charm. Old style inside with lots if quirky small rooms. Shared facilities were all very clean, beds were comfortable. "Good position, but the room is too tiny."
Every other day 8AM, there will be trash remove which generate TONS of noise, and you won't be able to sleep if your room is close to the alley. No bathroom in the room, only public bathroom. Old facilities like water faucet keep dripping water, wooden floor generates lot of noise, etc. No elevators, only narrow stairs. The room is only about 120 sq. […] ft, NO KIDDING. I don't like that parking is not free. I was told I could pay a discounted rate for parking at the front desk, but didn't realize they do not open until 8am and I had to leave by 7am so I ended up paying a high price for parking.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not your usual hotel"
This is not the typical type of hotel I usually stay in, but then again, San Francisco is not your typical boring American city. The hotel is pretty cool, in a great neighborhood about 4-5 blocks from the Wharf, far enough from tourists. The walk is easy down to the Wharf. Room was super tiny and uncomfortable for the one I chose which was the only […] available option on this website when I booked it. I should have asked to upgrade to get a bigger room when I checked in. With all the side tables and antiques they place in every room, some of the rooms just don't give you much space to walk alongside the beds, anywhere to place your luggage flat to access your clothing conveniently or much less turn around. Bed was terribly uncomfortable as many other reviewers suggest. Pillow was flat and made it hard to get comfortable. I grew up with a firm mattress as a kid and this mattress was much harder than that. The community bathroom/showers takes a little getting used to, but by the last couple days of my 4 day, 3 night stay...it didn't bother me anymore. My room was close to the bathroom and front desk on the 2nd floor. The coffee and/or hot chocolate in the morning before you walk outside on a chilly morning is a very nice touch. On a Monday morning, which apparently is trash day, if your room is along the south wall of the building, adjacent to the little driveway/alley, you will hear loud noises, that is just residents rolling their trash cans out to the street. "GREAT EXPERIENCE, but be aware of ............"
If you arrive after 10 pm, the hotel´s door will be locked and will be nobody there to open it for you. Have a cell phone available and charged to call at a number you will find posted on that door. Otherwise, that could be a HUGE bummer. Expedia people or the hotel staff NEVER said anything about this possible and really common situation. We arrived […] at around 10 pm and we were left there, outside the hotel, in the middle of a lonely street. My cell phone battery had died hours ago. Still, we were lucky. A Hispanic guy, really, really friendly, came out from a restaurant, after his work hours. He used his cell phone to call the hotel people. This helped us avoid what could have been an UGLY NIGHTMARE. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Location:Great price"
We spent 4 nights at this hotel with a shared bath. We decided that we were too old to do shared bath again.Genuine Expedia guest review
Just a few blocks away from Fisherman's Wharf in a quiet and safe part of town with plenty of restaurants within a short radius. This hotel is an old wooden building with tiny rooms and shared bathroom facilities. Good if you want something a step up from a hostel, but probably not the best hotel if you have kids.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best deal in town, if you can do stairs."
Nice, clean, affordable boutique hotel in a safe neighborhood one block from the cable car line. The shared bathrooms & showers were always clean and most rooms have a sink. One complaint was the hard bed but I was so tired every night that it didn't matter. Also, you must be able to do stairs since there is no elevator.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Cheap-European style hotel."
The hotel has a great location near Fisherman's Wharf, and has a very European flavor to it. It's nice, as long as you don't come in expecting some large corporate style hotel with all the modern things. There's no TV in the room. The beds and furniture aren't the newest. The people at reception don't understand the concept of early check in (though […] they're nice enough about storing luggage in the manager's office while you go about town waiting to check in). The toilets and showers are shared. There isn't much in the way of sound-proofing, so you'll hear any conversations in neighboring rooms even if they're not raiding their voices. So why did I like it? It's got a certain charm to it. You can help yourself to coffee, ice water, even chocolate brownies at reception. There are interesting old photos, and other stuff all over the walls, even plants growing around the place. You feel you are staying in a place with character and rough around the edges charm. And of course it's cheaper than anything else you're likely to find in such a good location. They left us an offer in our room on the day before departure: $50 for another night if we wanted it. We couldn't stay, but would have considered it under other circumstances. The wireless internet connection is free for everyone (so you don't need an expedia coupon for it), and mostly it's sufficient, except in the mid-evening when too many people are trying to use it. Other times we could watch our IPAD Netflix without hitch. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

What an awesome find! Great service, VERY clean, excellent location - if you can deal with sharing a toilet/shower, it's an AMAZING place to stay. "Quirky and Convenient!"
We have stayed at the San Remo twice now and both times enjoyed our time. The place is quirky to say the least - a warren of little rooms and funny nooks and crannies filled with books and oddities (the hotel was decorated for Halloween). The rooms are small and a little worn, but the bathrooms are updated and kept very clean. Reminiscent of an old […] fashioned boarding house, the rooms are all small and close together (they give you earplugs for a reason). That being said, the location can't be beat - it's walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and the Ferry Building. At the price, I would say this is an excellent deal overall. "Convenient but Dated"
The hotel was in a great location, close to the Fisherman's wharf and walking distance to any form of transportation. The hotel itself was very quaint. Tiny rooms with no air conditioning, so be careful if you're planning on being in SF during a heat wave, like we were. The staff were all very nice. The communal bathrooms were totally fine, but felt […] a bit like a college dorm style. Very nice, but to be considered if you're looking for a private, relaxing trip. Was close to son who lives in the area. Hotel has nice feel, very friendly. Super restaurant next door.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The San Remo is a nicely situated hotel in the back streets of North Beach. The rooms are very small with barely enough room to move around with your luggage out. Some rooms come with sinks, others don't. For the most part the hotel is quiet and so is the neighbourhood. However the walls are paper thin and for the first night of our stay we had some […] inconsiderate 20-somethings partying next door all night long. When we mentioned it to the front desk the next morning we received a simple apology and were told that they "may" be checking out in the morning. Fortunately for us they did and our 2nd night was much quieter. However the comfort of the beds and pillows left much to be desired. When we booked we were aware that there were communal bathrooms. This did not bother us, however the hotel appeared to be fully booked and the amenities were only cleaned and replenished once a day. This meant that towards the end of the evening and first thing in the morning they were filthy, however if you were lucky the toilets might still have some toilet paper left. Over all the hotel wasn't terrible, for its price it was reasonable although the bathroom situation was less than ideal. I would suggest this hotel if you only needed to stay 1 or 2 nights and you didn't need the comforts of a nicer hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Stay in SanFrancisco"
This was our second stay at the San Remo. The hotel is within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf which made it convenient to see some of the sites. Having the bathrooms down the hall was only a little inconvenient as we did have a sink in our room. There were always showers and toilets open when you needed them. The bed was harder than we were used […] to but some people like that. Coffee was available in the lobby and they had snacks in the room. Restaurants are close by also. The price was right for us which is one of the main reasons we stayed there, I also liked that the building was old and it gave you a good feel of what it was like a hundred years ago, but with modern conveniences. We might or might not stay there again if we come back just because we might want to try something different. The staff was very friendly and helpful and gave us good information regarding restaurants. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"No frills but frilly curtains"
Hotel seems more like a cross between a hostel and going to stay at Grandma's Antique Shop. Rooms are tiny and there seem to be a lot of rooms per bathroom. However, the bed was v comfortable and firm and everything was super clean. Fresh towels available and constantly replenished on rails by bathrooms, which were cleaned several times a day by smiley […] staff, and waiting for bathroom was never really an issue, so initial concerns vanished quickly. The location is great, close to Fisherman's Wharf, but back from the seedier touristy bit and by a Trader Joe's and Ralph's market. Cablecar car is close too. Excellent value for money as all nearby hotels are 3 or 4 times the price. Front desk staff extremely helpful. I would recommend avoiding a room near the bathrooms, as you might get disturbed by late night visits and flushing! We had a great time here, but I am not sure I would want to stop here first, if I had come off a long flight, unless you are a heavy sleeper. It's not really noisy, it's just that that the rooms are packed close together and you are very aware of other guests' movements up and down the corridors. I must say though, I am usually a bit squeamish about shared bathrooms, but the staff really do a good job of keeping them clean and the paper seat covers and mats are appreciated. We had good cafe recommendations from the front desk for our breakfast, but there is coffee and tea available during the day in the hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Very cute hotel - reminiscent of what I would imagine a boarding house to be in the early 1900's. Not too sound proof, but given it's original nature, that was to be expected. Very clean and safe - close to everything we needed.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Should be called a hostel."
I'm not a picky person. I've stayed in places with shared bathrooms and no tv before that were actually quite charming, but the San Remo was not one of them. The pictures make it look Victorian and charming, but the reality of it just makes me want to take a shower- and not one at the San Remo. 4 bathrooms for 62 rooms means waiting for a toilet or […] the prison-style shower that's basically a tile box in a closet, no privacy ever, and men of all ages walking around with their shirts off. The rooms are the tiniest I've ever seen, with the most uncomfortable, creakiest bed I've ever slept in. I mean, the room has a pair of ear plugs for each guest, if that gives you a clue. It should really be called a hostel. And the lack of air conditioner may be fine on a normal day, but when it's 85 degrees out, and the only window in your room opens up to the hallway rather than the outdoors, it's not pleasant. On the plus side, the location is excellent, and the little Mexican place on the corner is superb. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
