The staff was very helpful, a bit difficult to find. The quality of the breakfast was very poor, the building and rooms need TLC all over the place, not the lobby. What my husband complained the most was the internet connection. But it was close to the airport and where we wanted to go.

I do like the Effingham which sets in a tranquil environment with a gym , spa and golf facility with an affordable rate. The hotel reception staff are always very friendly and helpful. This time was no exception. However there are a couple of things about the hotel I would like to draw the attention to the management but which I am sure have been raised […] many many time by other guests. These are: (1) phone reception was poor (2) the furniture in the room I stayed was old and spoilt. The room was also stuffy so I need to use the fan as it was a hot day but the stand of the fan was slightly broken. Having said that the room and the bed were clean and comfortable. The bathroom was very clean. There were adequate supplies of teas and coffee. I did not use the hotel restaurant service. Overall I enjoyed the stay and will return definitely but has to stay in a room where the mobile phone signal was good as I need to be connected for work purpose. Read more

The hotel is good as a luanching pad for a flight out of Gatwick. It takes about 10 mins to get to the airport by either a taxi or bus. The bus is a normal bus service, not a courtesy service, which costs £4.50 pp and stops outside. We missed one at 6.15am as the staff hadn't made us aware of this quirk. A taxi costa c£15. This is not a 4* hotel. It is tired, old and in need of a serious overhaul. Reception staff were friendly enough. The bar staff were inconsistent. There was obviously a new guy starting with no supervision and I could overhear another member of staff having a go at him for offering to take a bar meal upto a guests room! So getting a telling off for […] going that extra mile. Nice! I didn't eat there with the exception of a BLT sandwich which was fine (but £9). A small glass of wine was over £5. The hotel will do if you just need a room, anymore than this I would suggest elsehwere. There was no atmosphere, carpets were horrendous, gym was full of blokes talking and not doing anything, pool wasn't available. Given the location (in the middle of nowhere) I was expecting it to be quiet. However a consistently active warning buzzer on my final night from outside meant I once didn't get a full nights sleep. If you want food, walk down the narrow pavement to the Dukes Head, a bit pricey but a whole nicer environment. If only they had rooms. Read more

The whole hotel is worn and tired. The carpets are patchy and paint flaking. The bar prices are astronomical , larger £5 pint large spirits £8. The gym equipment is old and the pool has neen shut for ages. Reception staff were fine but the hotel isn't .

I attended a wedding on the 18th Aug. I had room 101, the room was okay, nothing special. But do not stay in this hotel on a hotel day, as it had no A/C. I could not sleep at all. No fans either. Breakfast was average, had to wait 10mins to be seated. The breakfast area is really small for the number of guest staying here.

Poor service from reception staff, including tuts and looking at the ceiling. Choice at breakfast was very disappointing. Even though it was only 9 am most things had either run out or were low supply. Glasses had cracks in them. Scrambled eggs hardly warm, no fried eggs, cold coffee.

The only good thing I can say about the hotel was that it was clean. The service was shoddy, upon arrival, the receptionist told us that a shuttle bus to the airport leaves every 20 minutes from the hotel. In fact it left every 20 past every hour, which left us standing around for ages and we got a taxi in the end. The barstaff at the White Swan pub […] were quite unfriendly and made us feel as if we were an imposition when we ordered food and drinks. The food was terrible, soggy lettuce garnish and under cooked pork sausages at breakfast. The pool was under repair when we stayed which we found surprising because it was peak season. Our stay was awful! The furniture was tired and scruffy. The carpet threadbare. The bathroom also needed re-decorating with poor, cracked & stained tiling and flaking ceiling plaster. The room was inexplicably hot (perhaps we were over a sauna?) The room had a balcony which could have been very pleasant but overlooked the kitchen rubbish skip which […] was overfilled and open! The Wi-Fi did not work, the pay as you go internet computers were expensive. The restaurant was expensive, as was the bar food. The service in the restaurant was excellent, the food would have been good but it was not served hot ! The reception staff were unhelpful as to the Wi-Fi and fairly snooty - without reason considering the quality of the rooms. The swimming pool was not in service. The hotel is a little tired and in need of a refurb however you could not fault the cleanliness or the service enjoyed in the hotel. The beds were on the hard side even for somebody who likes a firm bed! The breakfast was good and despite being busy the items were readily replenished. If you need to be in the area then a safe choice.
