The Marina district of San Francisco is an excellent area if you dont mind walking, it is away from all the hustle and bustle and about 20 mins walk to Fishermans Wharf. The are plenty of bars and restuarants close by also. Lombard Street however has 6 lanes and the traffic starts about 4am, so its worth taking ear plugs for any hotel on this road incase you room is the road side.

Stayed in the Chelsea three times now and hopefully will again. Very clean hotel, free parking and walking distance to great local bars and restaurants (i.e not tourist traps). Great 50's style diner just up the street for breakfast.

Location was excellent, security of the building and parking garage were excellent, overall quality of the room- neat, tidy and comfortable enough. It's walking distance to all my favorite Marina hot spots!!

My brother and I really enjoyed our stay at the Chelsea Motor Inn. The hotel was in a great neighborhood and the service was wonderful. I would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to San Francisco.

I love this area of San Francisco because of the restaurants and shops and the proximity to the bay, so I was delighted to find this hotel. It was clean and comfortable with large spacious rooms. I had read the complaints about the noise and it was true that we were awoken by a loud argument in the street sometime in the night and there are several bars in the area. But having been forewarned, we wore earplugs and fell back asleep. Otherwise, it was not noisy at all. And there is free parking, which is a real bonus in SF. I would definitely return.

Great location . I was not bothered by the noise outside.

. . . overall a great value. It's true that you can hear the band from across the street; for us that wasn't a problem. If you want to stay in the Marina neighborhood (and especially if you have a car to park) this is a good choice.

I checked in at 11 pm. The night hawk receptionist was horrible. You have to stand outside and check in through a ticket window. I had 2 separate reservation and need to check in for all 3 nights. I told the guy several times. The guy obviously said yes and basically ignored my request. The next day I was locked out and have to check in again for the next 2 days. The receptionist during the daytime said there was not record of me checking in for 3 nights. The internet access was not available in the room as advertised. There was some technical problem that has been going on for several months but they refuse to fix it. The guy at the front desk said "if we charge you for it, then it would have been fixed right away." The room is clean though.

The Chelsea Motor Inn has very soft beds and has a parking lot, so we were able to park and ride the bus wherever we wanted to go. We were able to have connecting rooms and the staff helped us out in planning what we wanted to do for the two days we were there. The only complaints were the bathroom floors are cold, the elevator was really slow and we kept thinking the windows were open because of the noise.

Good clean hotel in good location, however the reception are not good at giving phone messages.

+ convenient location, bus line 30 can catch 10 and go to the wharf. Parking included in the hotel fee. Many nearby restaurants. Room service lady is nice. Room overall is clean and spacy. - Terrible noise from the old in-room air conditioner and the traffic. If you want to consider this hotel, check the air-conditioner and the location of the room first.

very noisey early morning due to postal workers loading up vans

We have stayed at the Chelsea before. If you have a car and want to stay in the City, then this is a good option. Free parking and location. The location is convienent, good bars and resturants in walking distance --the the sister property, The Cow Hollow, is just as good. Easy access to North Beach, Chinatown, and the Golden Gate.

Very updated and comfortable. The only complaint is that there must have been a restuarant or bar close to the backside (where our room was located) and the crowd was noisy between 11 and 1:30 at night. We will be going back!

The hotel was very nice. The 2 downsides were - very noisy at night people out on the street yelling, horns honking, sirens, etc. The went on for hours. The is no hotel restuarant, but there are many places to eat within a few blocks, so not a big deal unless you're hoping for room service. If I stay there again I would make reservations farther in advance and request a room that doesn't face the street.

A nice clean hotel. It was a little noisy (on a Saturday night), even in a "non-street side" room. However, that is to be expected considering the location. All in all, I would recommend this hotel, especially if you want to be within walking distance of the Chestnut/Lombard shops and restaurants.

We really did have a great experience, other than the fact that the street noise from the bar directly across from our room was a little much. The parking garage was full when we got there, but the desk clerk moved his own car to allow us to park.

The hotel is in a wonderful neighborhood between Chestnut, Fillmore and Union areas. The room was very clean and comfortable. The hotel manager was very friendly and helpful. The room we had must have been close to a dance club because there was yelling and dance music until early am. Maybe interior rooms are available but I was shocked how noisy it was.

For the price we paid, I expected something less than what we found... it was clean, big rooms, great bathroom, and awesome location. We couldn't have asked for more! We only spent one night there, but we actually wanted to stay longer! We will definitely stay there next time we come to San Fran. The local bars near by were great... and Union Street shops and restaurants were within walking distance. I definitely recommend it!

This is our third time staying in the Chelsea. We like the location since it is withing walking distance of the Wharf and Exploratorium; there is good shopping on Chestnut Street only a few blocks away; and some very pleasant restaurants nearby. The motel is clean, comfortable, but the adjacent streets can be noisy, especially on a Saturday night. We'll be back.

Hotel is pretty much OK for the money, but the street is terribly noisy. We stayed for 3 nights but hardly slept a night.

Location, location, location. The rooms are large, clean, comfortable. The location might not be what some people want but for us it is perfect. Great to have a place to park included in the cost.

The staff at this hotel was so helpful in every way. From telling us local good dining spots, to how to take the bus to our destinations, A+

The room was large and very nice. The bed was probably the most comfortable bed i've stayed in. Great Hotel and the staff was great and very helpful.

Our two night stay at the Chelsea Motor Inn was very pleasant. We weren't asking a lot from our accommodations, certainly no special amenities. In that context, my wife and I felt that we received good value for the money. The room was acceptably clean and quiet. The bed was very comfortable. For our interests, the location is excellent. It's an easy walk to Fisherman's Wharf and located close to bus routes to take us to Golden Gate Park, China Town, etc. Given all of these qualities, this is a place we'll stay again.

We stayed three nights at this hotel but were just "satisfied". We felt we could have found one comparable in price but more central to the surroundings. A bus trip is necessary (but short and around the corner)to reach the Pier etc. unless you prefer to do a LOT of walking. The staff was courteous but not as warm and welcoming as we had hoped. The room was very clean(I'm overly picky about that)and spacious; however, ours was located on the side street and there is a bar right across the street that doesn't help the noise level on the weekends. The patrons woke us up at 1:30 AM as they gathered in the street and sang until 3:00. Would we stay there again? Yes, but definitely would ask for a room away from the side street.

Although on a busy street our room was suprisingly quiet. It was close to transit and excellent shopping. Also pleasent walking to Marina area. Loved the apples offered every day at the desk. My sister from Australia was very impressed. Would definately stay there again.

We loved this place, which was recommended by friends who, like us, have a young child. It's close enough for a (slightly long-ish) walk to the Exploratorium, and the surrounding neighborhoods are fun to stroll. The room we got, facing Fillmore St., was especially wonderful, with obviously-updated soft furnishings and a good bathroom. We were surprised, because looking at the building from the outside gives you no clue how wonderful the rooms are. (The carpet in elevator was stained, but don't let that fool you!) Hotel staff are excellent: professional and kind. I can't believe their rates are so low!

The rooms that face Lombard street get a lot of evening noise especially if there are festivities going on. The parking was great and they did everything to help you with that. I would stay there again.

I read other reviews before booking this room so I knew it would be loud - but not as loud as it turned out to be. Bring earplugs! Booming music from street bars was very intrusive (unless you're 22 and that's your scene). And it wasn't close to the Pier or main attractions - had to drive there. But overall - a nice room with no parking fee. We won't book again there because of the noise level.

Wow, talk about surprised. This place is definitely a hidden gem in San Francisco. The staff is very friendly, the rooms are good sized by SF standards and FREE PARKING (parking at most hotels in the city is ($25-$50 per night). The room was very clean, the elevator and rooms are only accessible with a key (very safe) and the location is great with many restaurants, bars and shopping nearby. Be aware this place is not in the normal tourist areas (about $6 cab ride to fisherman's wharf) and the rooms along Lombard are noisy (however the interior rooms are very quiet). Came back and stayed here 3 days after initial stay and had the same experience. Highly recommended for the price and they have other hotels in the area that are 2-4 bedroom suites at similar savings!!!

Good hotel for the price. Location is convenient to tourist attractions and many good restaurants are within easy walking distance. Does get a bit noisy on the Lombard side, and the first floor is chilly above the garage. It is a well-kept property with large comfortable rooms and friendly staff.

I had meetings in Half Moon Bay later in the week but wanted to spend a day and night in SF. This place was perfect. The room was clean, bright inexpensive and included free indoor parking. The neighborhood was great. Lots of bars and rest. A short bus or cab ride to Fisherman's Wharf and Union Square. Perfect for my wife and I. Not good if you ahve kids along

Hotel personel Would not doing anything about children playing ball in hall way late at night when we complained.

The only draw back is the loud clubs near by, other than that the hotel is a good bargain. Just be prepared to play music in your room when you sleep.

For money we paid hotel offered correct facilities. Distance from Union square is not as close as it appears on map. But can be reached by feet. It will be good if they can found way how to serve continental breakfast (for same price) in reception, lobby, or somwhere alse in hotel. All in all not so bad.

I read the other reviews and was concerned about noise. We did not have any outside noise but it may be due to the fact we stayed in an interior room. The room was clean, neat, and up to date. There was a great curved shower curtain so you didn't have to take a shower in a cramped area with a curtain clinging to you. Even though this sounds like a small feature, it made a difference. The staff was not real helpful in ordering a cab. We had to do it on our own which was difficult in that area. Loved the 12:00 check out time. It allowed us to get up at our leisure and not feel rushed to get out. Nice stay.
