We went on a last minute Expedia trip and were completely satisfied by everything except the service of the staff-- they just seemed disinterested in the guests. They did bump us from a marina view to an ocean view room which made all of the difference in hindsight. The room itself was large and generally clean. Oyster Pond is a great part of the island that is developed but not dense or overcrowded. It definitely caters to the sailors on the island more than the cruise ship passengers/Americans (which is to say that's a good thing). The Captain Oliver's restaurant was overpriced and the food was just OK. Be sure to visit the supermarche at the top of the hill as well as the Quay Ouest restaurant. Both are more reasonable. Also, spend one day in St Barths; the ferry leaves from right outside the hotel and is too easy of a trip to not take it. Overall I would definitely recommend the place. Read more

This little jewel comes with a few words of advice...this is a marina, not a beach front hotel. The room had a view that was something I had looked for. The internet was sporatic at best but we just looked at email once a day and it was only available in their lobby. This hotel was rated 4 stars in 2005 and that was probably the last time they did any work on it. The bathroom tile was horrible. There were places where it was repaired but in all respects a blind person could do a better job with a caulk gun. The bed was one of the cheapest and hardest ones I've slept on. It was almost as if I was sleeping on the […] box spring. It really isn't much of a resort. It has a small pool and a small beach. If you do go you need a car. To get to a major town you will need a car, or walk. I walked to the French Quarter (45 minutes, and I walk fast) then take a bus or hitch hike. We originally stayed on the Dutch side at the Flamingo, which is a great little resort, but more family and old couple oriented than we wanted. My wife, daughter and I stayed at Captain Oliver's over Christmas. It's a nice place, and a good value. The staff was always very pleasant and accommodating. We requested another room from our original room to get something more updated, and the staff kindly obliged. The breakfast package for the three of us was very reasonable, and it was a nice buffet […] style with eggs to order. The restaurant was priced similarly to other venues of comparable quality. The pool was very clean and well kept, though some of the furniture was a little dated. The rooms have MAGNIFICENT views for the price, and the restaurant is on the water. For those planning to go to St. Barths, the ferry is less than 50 yards away from the restaurant so you can time your breakfast accordingly. The rooms were somewhat dated, but priced appropriately. St. Martin is not a budget destination. We own a timeshare across the bay at Oyster Pond, so we would go there during the day to spend time with other families and walk to the beach which is next door. Overall we liked the resort. My daughter and I prefer a little more resort amenities, though my wife prefers the simple and non-commercial style at Captain Olivers. One note that is not the fault of the resort: mosquitos. We arrived on the 11 of May 11, we had the front ocean deluxe room. When we started to undo our luggage we smeled a strong odor in it, so we requested another room and right away was giving to us. Now we have to take everything that was put away already and transport to a new room, with that, after all was done, but the bathroom items, we also noticed […] another odor, different than the previous, this time the shower room had a standing water on it with a fowel smell of sewer, we called, and they said that they will fixed, it was a back up. No problem there, only the maintenance guy had to have is lunch, so we had to wait. Well for that we received a fruit basket and a lunch for two at the restaurant. Nice, but the restaurant is also run down. The all place is falling apart since the owner died, so it is not a 5 star as they say, its now like a 3 star if that. As far as the surroundings, there is a restaurante pub, called the Dingy Dock, my wife asked for a hamburger, and this one come with a cockroach, you think we would get something, at least a free hamburger, an apology, we never went back. The pool, watch your toes, the nails are comming out of the platforms so the heads stick out., One day my wife went to the bathroom and found a small crab, that is hard to explain, near the water, maybe, If I had space here I could write a novel about our stay there.Do not go to Iguana bar and ask for Dewars and ice, she understood double, so the bill was double. We had a wonderful time at Captain Oliver's. Though the rooms could use some updating, they were clean and staff was wonderful. The rooms have small kitchenettes with a sink and refrig. Don't plan on cooking anything as there are no pans, utensils, etc. There were a few mugs, glasses and spoons. The Dinghy Dock is fun and casual and also reasonably priced. There are some restaurants that you can walk to. Check out Le Oasis - very good! Head over to Dawn Beach - there is a shuttle that takes you there. We also went to Pinel Island - beautiful place and good snorkeling. The ferry is only $7. Oyster Pond is in a more remote location so where ever you go you need a taxi. We found a great taxi driver - Marcel of Landlord Taxi Service. We called him all the time and his prices got cheaper every time we called. Very nice man and knowledgable of the island. Be sure to go to the Sunset Grill to watch the planes land and take off. On Tuesday go to Grand Case on the French side. They have a parade and lots of vendors on the street which they close. Live music in many places. The festivities start later in the day. Visit the lolo for some inexpensive and delicious island food. Of course go shopping one day in Phillipsburg and walk down the boardwalk. Keep in mind most stores and restaurants close by 5. Where to start... the Hotel is a shell of its former self. Furniture and facilities are in bad repair, and the location itself is terrible if you plan on going out at night, because the Oyster Pond is deader than William the Conqueror. The advertised facilities are either substandard (the pool's water is bathtub-temperature) or plain don't work (like […] the internet). BUT, we could have lived with all of that, because the rates were exceptional (thanks in part to a hotels.com offer) and so were the views from the (actually pretty nice) rooms. However, what we couldn't live with was the absolutely appalling customer service. St Martin was hit by Hurricane Earl during our stay (sort of) so we expected some setbacks. What we didn't expect was that the hotel would lose its power for 2 FULL DAYS - and not have a backup generator sufficient to bring at least basic power to the rooms. This in a self-styled 4-star hotel, while across the bay, just 200 yards away, we could see other hotels with all their power on, working merrily away. For 2 days, we sat in the dark with the storm blinds locked, sweltering in the humid heat, and enjoyed the contents of the hotel's "hurricane survival kit": a toy "The Incredibles" flashlight with no spare batteries, 2 bottles of water, 2 apples, 2 bananas, 2 packets of biscuits, some crackers and some cheese spread. This for 2 guys, one of which is 6'2'' and weighs 180lbs, and the other of which is 6'5'' and weighs 220lbs, for 2 days. Within 4 hours the batteries of the toy flashlight were flat and we had no food. We stayed like that for 2 days, in the dark, reading by using the light from our cell phones to light up the pages of our books. We were never contacted by hotel staff during this time, because they weren't there. At the end of the second day of confinement, in despair we risked the hurricane and drove around the bay to the nearest hotel for a meal.
