Over all we have stayed at the Cornell Hotel de France before & will stay there in the future. The service was pleasant, helpful & very courteous. There are no ice buckets or corkscrews in the rooms but the kitchen staff got them for us. Coffee isn't available in the rooms & we were told management didn't allow us to take coffee from the restaurant in […] the morning. However, there is a Starbucks a block away. Read more

"Great boutique hotel near Union Square"
This is an older but well maintained "French" hotel. The rooms are small but comfortable. There is a wonderful sit down hot breakfast included. The location is just two blocks from Union Square and close to shopping, the cable car, Nob Hill, etc. Ask for a room on the side or back of the hotel and there will be little if any street noise. Definitely […] would stay there again. Read more
"Quaint hotel in a great location - worth staying!"
The hotel has a lot of character - very quaint. The room is simple -bed, desk/chair, t.v., & bathroom. The radiator/heater started a bubbling noise early in the morning (it just took me a while to figure out what it was & wasn't sure how to stop it). The restaurant below serves wonderful meals & has a lot of decorations to view while you're there. The […] location is wonderful! Walking distance to Chinatown, the BART, & Union Square. "Classic"
The Cornell dé France is a classic old style hotel. Somewhat hidden in that the entrance is somewhat plane until you step in. The reading or lounge is small but gives one a relaxed feeling and the furniture is antique and comfortable.. The office gives you a personal/hands on feeling. The elevator takes you back a hundred years. Each floor depicts one […] of the many Great French Artist. Room are small but well kept and quite. "Great location POOR Room"
Very Very Small Room, Broken bed side light, VERY loud bathroom fan (unable to turn off seperate from BR light), Very hot and Humid room, NO AC and unable to keep window open ( Broken) over head fan broken (unable to change speed). Front of hotel very needs some tender loving care. Other wise, the bed was comfortable and the breakfast in the morning […] was nice. NOT WORTH THE PRICE. Read more
"A short stay"
Very clean and well appointed bathroom. Small room, but all the basic amenities were there. No view from the window of the 4th floor (opened to gap between the buildings) but I was there only at night. Quiet. Simple breakfast, but convenient. Very friendly staff. Excellent location.

"A lovely little bit of France in San Francisco"
I've stayed in several of the boutique hotels in the Union Square area, and this was by far my best experience. The Cornell is clean, efficient, and the staff is extremely kind and helpful. It was really fun listening to the various staff members who all seem to speak French and greet you with 'Madame' and 'Monsieur' whenever you see them. The weekend […] desk agent was especially helpful with directions and recommendations for the various transportation options, as I had to go to various parts of the city and the East Bay during my stay. The location is just off Union Square itself, easy access to public transportation and all the area shops and sights. There are also several mini-marts and a Walgreens very close by, so if you've forgotten any essentials they're in a great location to find them. My room was very clean, not to big or too small, and the bed was wonderful - crisp sheets and a very comfortable duvet. The room was a bit stuffy, but with the window slightly open (an inner court window, so no street noise at all) and the overhead fan on low, it was no problem at all - the breeze from the fan dispelled any heat from the day as well. The bathroom wasn't huge, but about the same as mine at home, clean, and nicely laid out with plenty of towels and the usual complimentary lotions etc. The breakfasts are very good - a real American breakfast of eggs, toast, potatoes, and bacon, with good orange juice and excellent coffee. The waitstaff is very attentive and kind, a nice way to wake up in the morning. They have free in room wi-fi, though I didn't take my laptop this time, my smartphone picked it up fine and the speed was great for that. There's also a computer in the lobby that's easy enough to use. Overall the hotel reminded me of the several small family hotels and B&B's I stayed in around Paris and Milan, so if that's you're style you'll enjoy it and feel at home. If you want big, fancy, and impersonal, stick to the chains. But if you're into something with Read more
"Absolute must stay in San Francisco."
Wonderful experience. Charming French theme small hotel. Room and bathroom were small but fine for me. Who is going to stay in the hotel in San Francisco? And the price was awesome. Staff were so accommodating and full breakfast in their charming restaurant. Real old world feeling in a great great location near Union Square. I loved it!
Great price, nice location..great restaurant....nice decor...small room, but expected that in this botique hotel. Will definitely stay there again!
"Sweet lil place for value!"
This place was do adorable and a great value! The gentleman working there was so thoughtful and gave me his own umbrella to head out of town with. His only request was I bring it back the next time I stay!
Quaint older hotel near Union Square. We had a great stay, everything was fine. Some parts of the bathroom could be updated however, we would certainly stay there again.
"Great location; intolerable heat"
Hotel has the potential to be a gem but heat in some rooms with poor ventilation cannot be turned off. Staff is basically indifferent but after complaining to 3 different "managers" my room was finally switched. There's a reason why it is low priced.
"Close to union square and parking"
My wife and I stayed two nights, our second stay at this facility in 4 months as we like our prior experience. Rooms are small but comfortable and staff goes out of their way to be of assistance. We were told by staff that most employees have worked there over 20 years Basement restaurant is a delight. we had other couples join us for dinner there […] and all were happy campers Read more
"Very nice stay at the Cornell"
My girlfriend were looking for a centrally located hotel at a good rate with good amenities and we found it at the Cornell. in fact, when you factor in the free cooked breakfast, free wifi, and cheap parking (only $21 compared to $35 and up at other hotels), it was a San Fran bargain! Small but charming, wonderfully decorated common areas and rooms, […] and a welcoming staff added to the value. I know we'll price them out again next time we need a hotel in San Fran. Read more
The Cornell Hotel de France is a delightful change of pace from the typical large and modern hotel. There is an intimacy and humane scale to this hotel that captures a bit of the old-world. And the Joan of Arc restaurant is very good. The next time I am in San Francisco I will most definitely stay here.
My husband and I enjoyed our three night stay in Hotel Cornell which was more like a bed and breakfast with its full service, tasty breakfast, although simply eggs and French toast. The room was clean and we had a lovely view to the front of the hotel to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the San Francisco. We were located well a block from union Square […] and at the street's corner was the stop to hop on the cable car. Truly enjoyed the European/French flare of the hotel. Read more
"Cornell Hotel de France near Union Square"
The hotel was off Powell St and Bush St. There was a male strip club next door. They provide a splendid breakfast and a clean room. However, the room was very old and quite cramped. The room lacked any method to lower room the temperature. It was 37 degrees outside, but hot inside the room. An open window couldn't keep the room cool. Though out the […] night I had to get up and hold the door open to allow cool air into the room. Read more
"great location"
A cute French hotel with a great location. Definitely has a European feel. Bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was great and the dining area was great. Just a 2 block walk to Union Square. Would recommend this hotel to others.
"Adorable jewel of a chateau in San Francisco"
We stayed in the Hotel Cornell de France and it was wonderful. My daughter takes french and she was fascinated by the overall theme of the place. The entire building followed the french middle aged theme with jean d'arc as the star. The paintings really brought the place together. I especially loved the fact that floor 2 was etage toulouse lautrec :)!! The […] breakfast was amazing and so delicious(** and FREE**). I don't know if i could find a better breakfast nearby. The only downsides to the place was that it does not have great ventilation. In fact, the room was a bit stuffy and incredibly hot. But why worry? Probably the majority of the people staying in the hotel to sleep after an exhausting night on the town. Hotel Cornell de France is a hidden jewel in San Francisco. Read more
"European hotel in SF"
They rooms are a nice size, clean and the free breakfast is much better than most hotels. The hotel is not glamourous but is comfortable and convenient.
"palomar s.f."
the people at this hotel were super friendly and took great care of us. a great time!!!
"Weird experience"
This hotel is in a weird neighborhood, but it's convenient to Union Square. Rooms are tiny but it has a lovely French restaurant that serves delicous breakfast. If you're looking to save $ this may be the place for you!
"Hotel Stay"
Very pleased with everything, especially the price and complimentary breakfast. I come up every 2 to 3 months on business. I will stay again next trip.
"FANTASTIC"
Great stay. Warm and comfortable. Fantastic staff and a great opportunity to practice your French.
"Hotel Cornell de France, San Francisco"
Great value; great location; nice staff. Sort of quirky.
"classy little hotelclose to veerything"
"Cozy queen" room big enough, comfy bed, quiet, good breakfast, very helpful front desk guy, $24 parking with in/out across street. All for low $$. Nothing else close to that was available.
"Cornell Hotel in San Francisco"
Very small rooms. No parking. No air conditioning. Breakfast downstairs was nice.

"nice but super small"
this place is nice but honestly the rooms are tiniest i've ever seen the twin beds were literally 6 inches apart, i had bigger rooms at a motel 6...
"great location, a bit stuffy but price is great"
I had a cozy queen room which came at an amazing price but was very outdated, a bit smelly and the window faced a wall. The size of the room wasn't an issue at all - though this is what I expected booking "cozy queen". Location and breakfast are perfect and everybody is quite friendly.
"Hotel Cornell de France - Great location!!"
We found Cornell to be a lovely boutique hotel; small and charming with lively and colorful French art, surrounding every floor, including our room!! We liked the comfy waiting room, with newsy literature, and warm tone. Our room was very comfortable, with a cute bay window, overlooking the street below. The hotel, staying in keeping with a French theme, […] had an older but in great working condition, elevator with the swing door. The real treat, was being served breakfast in downstairs French restaurant. We hope to return to San Francisco and would definitely stay at Cornell again. Read more
Cornell Hotel De France was within about two blocks of China town and the cable cars. The management was excellent and very helpful. Breakfast was not continental but a full hot meal. "Great place I will stay there again."
If you are looking for a place to stay with a really comfy bed then you need to stay at the Cornell Hotel de France. I also really enjoyed the traditional 4 leg tub and shower. "Visit"
Kind of odd to have a Male Review Club next door. It's the first thing you see when you look for the hotel. The room was clean but the breakfast area was crowded to the point that we just left the hotel and went elsewhere. Not bad. Not good.
"Uncomfortable and loud"
There was no air conditioning and little insulation from all of the street noise! Not a good combination for the light sleeper...
"Amazingly quiet hotel"
Charming old hotel convenient to Union Square area. 2 dogs greet you at check in. Breakfast isn't served until 7:30, a little late for the business traveler. Despite closeness to cable car, my room was quiet and I sleep well.
"Cornel Hotel in San Francisco, CA"
Very old fashion Hotel but so comfortable. The decoration it's beautiful. Close to Bart, Cable car, Union Square.....I really recommend.
"Nice but could be more functional"
We're okay with a small room, as long as if functions efficiently. In the bathroom for instance, the only towel bar was holding two nice bath towels, but there wasn't a place to hang a hand towel, wash cloth, robe, etc. Suggest adding towel rings or hooks as there was plenty of empty wall space to accommodate. Also, I use a hanging toiletries travel […] bag and would have liked a high hook near the sink area for easy access so I never have to unpack my toiletries. Only a small soap dish in shower - no place for shampoo, etc. except on shower floor. With those minor fixes, hotel would be perfect! (Hope they are reading this!) Have stayed many times. Lovely and charming with a great staff, full American breakfast in the beautiful onsite restaurant, and great location just 2 blocks from Union Square. Highly recommend! Read more
