For the cheap price that I paid, this hotel was a pleasant find.The room was spotless, Only stayed one night. As others have mentioend, it is mostly a hotel for seniors. Only negative I found was that nothing is open - no coffee, etc before 8am. 7 would have been better for those of us who like an early start.

The room was comfortable, although the bathroom smelled like a hospital. Very small room, old TV, but we did go there just to sleep. Breakfast was plentiful, but not if you're a vegetarian. Location is really good. All in all, a good stay, but this is an old-fashioned hotel with old-fashioned feel.

The Grand Hotel did not live up to its name because it was a big disappointment. From the outset - no car park! I am disabled and found it very difficult getting from the public car park to the Hotel, due to the terrain. At reception, no help with luggage, not shown to room and when I tried the electronic key, it had not been activated. I was very disappointed […] with the room size, it appeared to be a room that had been split into two rooms, therefore making it a small double. The bed was extremely hard (as if sleeping on a concrete block). Very disappointed with meal times (breakfast 9 -10am and dinner an hour only) had to miss breakfast on first morning due to having to leave at 08.30. Final disappointment was breakfast on the final morning, went to dining room to find a queue waiting for seats, stood there for 15mins, couldn't wait any longer, (so left hungry). Entertainment was extremely poor, "singer/organist" who could not sing or play, was very repetitive in his repetoire. Definitely one of the worst hotels I have stayed in, I would not recommend this hotel to friends or family. Read more

The room we were given was tiny, the furniture shabby and well past its sell by date. The bedding and towels were however very fresh and clean. Overall, the hotel is in need of substantial investment in order to bring it to an acceptable standard.

We we put on the foureth floor, there was a TV from the 60s in there ,a remote that didnt work, no phone in room, so we had to walk down to reception for enquiries. I knew before we went that this was an old Victorian hotel which probably still needed a lot of investment putting into it to bring it up to modern day standards and in that respect I wasn't far wrong. Having said that the public areas seemed to be quite well maintained decoratively and carpetwise. The biggest complaint was the bathroom, it was shabby […] to say the least - broken chains to the both the bath and basin plugs, a bath panel which was in terrible condition, a toilet pan which was not level, to name just a few of the problems. The bedroom was reasonable although the mattress on one of the beds was in dire need of replacing. The housekeeping in the bedroom was poor as we came in one afternoon after a day out to find that the beds had hardly been made. The meals in the dining room were served buffet style and there was a reasonable choice of food at both breakfast and dinner. Because of them being served from a hot buffet however, the fried eggs at breakfast had a greasy crust on the top which made them unpleasant to eat and the bacon rashers were obviously cheap cuts. The food in the hotel improved as the week-end progressed I think because on the Saturday morning several coach-loads of people left, leaving the hotel only sparsely occupied. It has to be said though that the food wasn't fancy and I suspect that a lot of the vegetables were frozen including the roast potatoes. Summing up, the break represented good value for money when compared to other hotels but I would have been prepared to pay a little bit more to have enjoyed a bit more home comfort. Read more
