The only thing to recommend this hotel is its proximity to Gatwick and the pool. The rest of the hotel is dismal. The room smelled of tar and appears not to have been renovated in decades. There was no elevator, and it was difficult to find our room.

We felt that the Copthorne Gatwick was very pleasant but the shuttle service and the restaurant were very expensive. Dining was a la carte at 5 pounds per side item and the breakfast was about 15 pounds each. We ate at the airport.

I had specified a room nearer to lift due to bas knees. The receptionist offered to help with my luggage but indicated it was right across the way on ground floor. Yes, after three huge steps with luggage, had to enter a maze and struggle through fire doors to get to room. Despite paying for a room with free internet access I had to click pay five pounds then the receptionist would take it off. I reminded the clerk when I checked out and asked if they could just do it over the phone as i didnt want to do the maze again with the luggage. The clerk offered to send someone with the receipt. Twenty minutes later, the very sweet clerk offered it to me. They hadn't taken off the five pounds. So, i had to do that trek anyways, now much later, and provide proof of my booking by printing it out for the receptionist. It was so annoying. Truly. Landscaping is gorgeous. Carpet had seen better days, but toiletries were top rate. Read more

This hotel should not be rated 4-star. Room was very tiny, but reasonably equipped. Extra charge for use of the internet. Hotel is in a very pretty environment, but located far from the airport (almost 1/2 hour by shuttle). Shuttle service (additional charge) to and from hotel was only hourly in each direction - miss one bus and you've got an hour to […] kill. I had an early flight and had to leave the hotel at 04:27 in order to ensure I made a 7 AM departure. The hotel is starting to show its age and it is a bit worn around the edges. The WiFi was really bad. Almost as bad as the old dialup. I couldn't even stream a youtube flash video.

This is a great hotel when you have an early morning flight out of Gatwick. The hotel room was very clean and spacious. The staff friendly and the food very good. There is a bus service going to Gatwick every hour beginning at 5:10 a.m.

I travel to England to visit relatives almost every year. The Gatwick Copthorne Hotel is a wonderful location to spend my final night in the UK before traveling back to the US. It is far enough from the airport to make the night comfortable, without the noise of the airport disturbing a much needed night of sleep before a day of travel. If this is a 4-star hotel then it's by room size only. There's no lift (elevator) and our room was on the 2nd floor. Neither of the bedside lights worked and the staff were unable to fix them, so they changed us to a tiny and not properly cleaned room. But the real problem was the food. The main hotel restaurant was closed, though the hotel information claimed it should be open. So we ate in the bar, where the service was extremely slow and the food was literally […] inedible. We left it. There are no nearby restaurants or shops, so we returned to the bar later to buy sandwiches, which comprised little besides bread - virtually no filling at all. I do not recall such a terrible hotel experience. The staff seem to think their location close to Gatwick Airport and very pleasant grounds surroundings, plus the attractive building itself, is all they need to provide. The hotel was lovely and presented well but its Definitely not 4 star bedrooms. The food wasn't cheap and if you like a reasonable portion then this is not the place to go. We complained about the quality of the food and the manager made no effort to sort it out just said "ill tell the chef". Outside and general areas of hotel look good, however there were some major issues with the guest rooms and food service. 1st room was room 471, small and but ok until you opened the bathroom. major green mould in the shower area, hole in bathroom door that had been badly repaired with what looked like silicone and panel in front of bath tub falling […] off. Complained to reception staff and they responded very professionally, apologized and offered another room. 2nd room (633)was better (and larger), issue one was that the heater did not respond to the thermostat. It was getting late by this point so I removed the fuse and shut it down that way. Furnishings and bathroom were clean but old fashioned, not sure if they were meant to be that way but it to me it looked like a major renovation was needed. Service at the bar (especially in the White Swan) was good however the food took forever to arrive (over an hour). Took the kitchen 20 mins+ to let the bar know they had run out of one dish, then took a further 40 mins+ to get the other dishes ready…. Lots of complaints from guests the night we were there and I would have moved hotels if we had been staying more than one night( even though we had pre paid with no refunds). Given the choice I would avoid this hotel at all cost (unless there are major improvements) even though the location is good for Gatwick airport. Read more

Very happy with the costs and what was provided, free pool and leisure facilities in the building next door are great and the food we had was of a decent standard although probably a bit expensive for what it was, the only thing I would change about our stay here or would do different next time is eat out somewhere.

Stayed overnight before a family event which was held at the hotel. Our romm was not brilliant, the in-house TV system did not work properly - picture kept freezing or was just non-existent. The hotel has a olde worldy feel which was nice. The staff were polite. It's right next to a local bus stop which is handy. Athough the hotel does have it's own bus service which is slightly more expensive but not unreasonable. We stayed there because we didn't want to travel to airport at a rediculas time in the morning. The room was ok however the […] television was old fashoned and didn't have all the channels you would expect with freeview these days and I think it was extra if you wanted internet. also the bath didn't drain properly. If you're assigned Room 202 ask to be re-located, the noisiest room I've ever had until 4 am in the morning, then again at 6 when they are cleaning the stone floor and banging the mop into the radiator on the wall outside! Nice breakfast, but noise spoilt my stay. Stopped two weeks before at the Copthorne Sheffield and that was outstanding.

Very convenient for Gatwick Airport- about a 5 min drive to the car parks. Large car park at the hotel but very full with holidaymaker cars. £5 a night charge. Room was ok, bathroom getting a bit tired. I didn't use the hotel restaurant or bar as I was on just a quick stay overnight with a 3.45am start. Staff at reception very good.
