"I don't know what other people see but this was ok"
I don't know what some of these people expect out of a hotel for this price in New York City. Talk about a steal. Service was outstanding. And all the employees were nice. Have us directions and had a cab waiting for us. And talk about location, 1 block from port authority. And half a block from Times Square. Great breakfast spot right across the road. […] Rooms were fine. No bugs. We checked before we sat down even. If your that picky about it then pay the extra $150 more and stay at the Westin right next door. All in all this was great hotel. And I'll be back here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hotel Carter is in a great location"
We wanted to be near Times Square and the hotel is 1/2 block from the middle of Times Square. The hotel is old and dated but the room was clean and beds were comfortable. We were only in the room to sleep. The employees were friendly and there is a pizza place right across the street. Cake Boss was only 1 1/2 blocks from the hotel--that was great. Good […] Morning America was 2 blocks away. Lots to see and do in NYC so we were happy. I would return. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel could be really charming if they just got new mattresses, new bedspreads, cleaned the tub, removed the mold in the tub, provided a place to put towels. The walls were good. We couldn't hear much of the noise of the city. But it was excessively hot snd we couldn't adjust the temp. Epic fail. And we paid $200.Genuine Expedia guest review
"stay elsewhere if you can"
Hotel is located in a great area. The hotel itself is is great need of a rehab. Everything needs to be updated. Feels and looks dirty even though it may not be. Electrical outlets didn't work. Blanket in the closet was actually a moving blanket.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel Carter - make your stay short !"
Great area to be in and beds were comfy. That is about it. If you just need a place to rest for a bit this is the place. If you are looking for a nice getaway, look somewhere else. You get what you pay for.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Because of its location, it's a great place to stay. If you plan on hanging out in your hotel, find another one. It's not dirty, it's just old and needs updating. If you just want a place to crash at night and don't need the amenities, this is fine. And for New York City, the price was great.Genuine Expedia guest review
"The only good thing about this hotel is location"
The hotel is IDEALLY located in Times Square in NYC. Other than that, it is not a nice place to stay. The rooms are old and dirty. The rugs are tattered. The towels are threadbare. They only make up the rooms every other day. My room came with used, dirty towels hanging on the hooks on the back of the door and a lack of toiletries. To their credit, […] they fixed this problem quickly. The room was hot and you can not open the window. My room had two double beds in a space that should have been for one. There was water leaking into the bathroom through the ceiling. Paint in the room was old, peeling, and applied over old wallpaper. All of the brass in the elevators was filthy and tarnished. If someone took better care of the property, it could be a terrific place. If you are going to NYC on a budget and want to be in the center of everything, it is OK, but remember you will not want to do anything but sleep in the room. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Overpriced, rundown, uncomfortable dump of a hotel"
No blankets on the bed, when we finally got blankets the second night they were as hard and rough as the towels in the bathroom, when we had towels. The bathroom door wouldn't close, the door handle fell off, the tv was plugged in with an extention cord that ran across the floor of the room. We figured out they probably named it the Hotel Carter because […] the last time anything was updated or repaired must have been during the Carter Administration. "The hotel from HELL"
The hotel was dirty with brown stained lamp shades and writing on the wall. The bathrooms did not have a vanity only a petal sink leaving no room for you to put your belongs. The bathroom also lacked a toilet paper holder. The toilet was sitting on the side of the petal sink. No Kleenex either. Plug in outlets were oddly placed. I complained about my […] room and was told my standards must be higher than others. The front desk did give me the option of moving rooms. After I check out 7 other rooms, I realize every room in the hotel had the same issues. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"old, but clean and convenient"
We planned this as a girls getaway weekend for Christmas shopping in the city. The hotel is OLD and a bit rundown, BUT the room was clean, the shower had hot water and the sheets were clean. The staff was EXCELLENT! The few issues we had were resolved instantly and the concierge desk was full of information on sites and subways and little hideaways. […] I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are looking for a place to stay for cheap and right in the heart of times square, when we plan another mini vacation we will be staying here again. Four days in NYC with my daughter. Did not want to spend a fortune on a room we would only be in to sleep. Hotel was clean enough and served our purpose. Unbelievable location steps from times square. Only had maid service every other day. room was plain, NO Frills.Genuine Expedia guest review

There is no comforter in room. I asked for it and got some dirty blanket finally. The room was dirty and service was bad. One most ridicules things is that they clean rooms every other day. Never recommend this hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Florida meets Times Square"
Right next to Times Square! Doorman there all hours of the day. Lucky Star Cafe had excellent hot food. The Choclate chip cookies were always gone they were so good. We met people from all around the world come to visit NYC. The shuttles to JFK and LGA were convent, inexpensive and on time. The Gentlemans Club was not an issue at all. There was a minimum […] of three staff in the lobby at all times. Room 1701 was small. The two full beds left no other space. The mattresses were new and comfortable. No ice microwave or fridge if that is an issue for you. It was 24f and blowing outside and we were warm and Cody inside. The towels were clean but not huge fluffly you buy at home. We always had enough supplies for the four of us. "Worst stay ever Book here!"
Worst hotel stay I have had in my life! Early December New York City 28 degrees outside, NO HEAT in my room!Tryed to call the front desk, phone did not work!Went to the front with a complaint, front desk said they would send a maintenance personnel up to my room.No offer to switch my room. Maintenance shows up 45 minutes later pulls out a wrench adjust […] some valves and says he'll be back in 15 minutes ... never came back. Saying the tempurature in my room was as cold as it was outside may be an exageration since it was 28 degrees outside and the bottle of water I had in the room didn't freeze but to say it was probably 42 degrees in my room is not a stretch. I went back to the front desk there were at least 15 people in line with apparently the same issue. At that point I decided to drop my key at the front desk at wait the 6 hours in a warm train station from my departure. The worst! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"If you ONLY care about price and location, go for"
Indifferent and unfriendly staff. The hotel is in serious disrepair with dirty carpet and dirty tiles. No fitted sheets on the beds, only ill fitting flat sheets. Small, thin, worn out towels and wash cloths that are only replaced every other day, unless you can convince the housekeeper to give you more. Location and affordability are the only attributes […] this hotel has going for it. There is small 24 hour restaurant beside the lobby that has an excellent and inexpensive breakfast, however, beware that they'll over charge for a bottled drink every time (nearly $4)! The location of the hotel is awesome! It's walking distance to Times square, Fashion District, Broadway Shows, RadioCity & Rockefeller center. Its also very conveniently located to the subway- which connects to all trains.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Good location close to all must see. Next to theater, few steps to Hard Rock.Genuine Expedia guest review
Great location but barely passable in the cleanliness and amenities department. Shower was cold, had to fix the light so I didn't electrocute myself, somewhat shoddy rug & bedspread. But hey --- you want Times Square / theater district at $200/night? This could be it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Clean beds and bathroom. Serious need of an update. If you're looking for a clean place to shower and lay your head at night, this is your place. Absolutely no extras, not even an ice bucket. The room was sauna hot..in December. The front desk said they don't control the heat, the city does. (??) Had to turn the air on to get comfortable. We had plenty of hot water, the 3 elevators worked all 7 days we were there, the sheets on the king size bed were clean, and the large flat screen TV. The location of the hotel could not have been better. The concierge desk was most helpful. negatives: Don't look under the bed! Hasn't been vacuumed in years! The pedestal sink was not connected to the […] wall. The ample white towels and wash clothes were good for exfoliating! The hairdryer made a grinding sound, smoked, then gave up, though the Front desk provided a new one right out of the box. Housekeeping only services the rooms every other day, but the front desk provides clean towels upon request. There is a phone in the room but I'm not really sure why. No room service. The hotel Wi-Fi was available in our room, but apparently not all rooms have signal. We didn't use it as it was $10/day and we had our smart phones. The only temperature control in the room was raising the window the maximum 2 inches. I suppose we could have used the window AC, but that seemed a waste of energy as it was freezing outside. (Bring a Phillips screwdriver with you so you can remove the block on the window allowing you to open it as much as you want). There was no refrigerator, microwave, or coffee pot. It would have been nice as we always had leftovers from the restaurants we frequented. We saved about $2500 staying at the Carter. Will we stay there again? Probably. "Worst Room Ever!!"
The room had no night stands or lamps, no desk or chair. The bed was so wrinkled it looked like someone had already slept in it. It did not have a mattress pad and the bottom sheet was not fitted and was so small it would not tuck in. There was no blanket, but just a Good-Will-quality bedspread that had to double as a blanket. There was one ceiling […] light with only 1 low-watt bulb. The bathroom did not have a mirror. (Try shaving without a mirror). There were 2 rough, small towels but no hand towels or wash cloths or bath mat. No hair dryer. The tub had a couple of hairs in it. (GROSS!!) There was one CFL bull in the bathroom, which was worthless for trying to apply makeup . There was a small window heat/air conditioner, but when you use it you must open the curtain and have no privacy! The window was so grimy that you could barely see out of it. No internet. The headboard of the bed was neither attached to the bed or the wall, so whenever you moved in bed it rocked, bumping the wall. No ice available. I have traveled all over the world, and even in third-world countries the bathrooms have mirrors and clean, well made beds. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
it was ok, nothing fancy but very adequate and in a great locationGenuine Expedia guest review
The good: the location was perfect! Right in times square! The prices was "ok" especially for the area...and no bed bugs! The bad:Room was not very clean. They were outdated-which was ok, but the carpets were pretty dirty, there was a clothing sticker on the wall (which by the way was also noted in someone else's review so I am assuming it was the same […] room) luckily I brought a can of lysol and sprayed everything. The staff was not very timely when it came to getting extra towels and a hair drier. The REALLY BAD:for whatever reason the saftey latch on the inside of our room door was removed and a simple chain lock was in its place .And there is a topless club attached to the hotel..which we weren't expecting (just a warning for people traveling with children) other than the hotel being REALLY run down..it was ok for the one night we stayed..but I would not retureturn for longer. "it's just a place to sleep"
Pleasantly surprised to have a king size bed when expected a double. Old radiator heat which was unbearably hot. Had to sleep with Windows open in December. Rooms have not been updated with peeling paint and ragged carpet and the TV did not work. Let's face it, it is only a place to sleep. We spent most of our time enjoying the city and shows.
