Mercure Hull Royal Hotel - Hull

Not the most up to date hotel, but good value for money. Great location if you are taking the train as we were. We stayed one night before heading down to London so it was very convenient as there is a door from the station into the hotel lobby. Room a bit dated, plumbing a bit old, but not bad.

Plenty of free parking close walking distance to pubs, shops, restaurants, cinema. Decent breakfast, good efficient check-in & check-out. Room pretty small but perfectly ok for overnight stay.

Friendly, efficient staff. Good value breakfast if pre-booked. Hotel room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The hotel was not very busy, and there was little noise in the corridors or adjacent rooms. However despite secondary glazing there was significant noise from the streets outside. I stayed here in a twin room with a friend - we were meeting other friends from around the country. The location could not be better, in the heart of the city, with an entrance actually from the train station. Room was all you'd expect and the bed was fantastically comfortable, we had a room not facing the street and it was very quiet and peaceful. […] One problem was the need to update the key system...the key is a kind of dot matrix thing from the sixties - the first one didn't work and they would only give us one key between us, which I thought was poor for a twin room. Had ask the reception for a wake up call at 8.30 am but didnot get one. Luckly had got a phone from someone on my mobile at 8.40 am. When told the reception while checking out, he was not bothered. He was more interested in taking the payment rather then trying to check out what went wrong.

We thoroughly enjoyed it, although would have appreciated being informed of the christmas party nigthts before we arrived, not when we read about it in the bedroom. We were just kept awake till 1.00a.m with the music. However our previous stay was perfect, thats why we came again. Location, staff etc was very good.

Hotel is fine for short stay- could not be in a better location, however, our room was cramped, the decor was tired and the toilet cistern leaked! The shower blasted out only freezing water - had to have a bath instead. At least the window opened to let out the smell of damp! We joined family members for breakfast the next morning - but were not offered […] tea or coffee or choice of eggs, though others had these choices, and our breakfast was a dispiriting affair.We visit Hull a lot, and usually stay in another hotel - we will revert to our usual choice. This is a good budget hotel, right in the centre of Hull and connected to the Train Station, with ample free parking and free wifi in all rooms! Some of the decor is a little faded, but I had absolutley no problems during my 2 night stay, and would be happy to stay there again!

Standard was as expected of an Accor hotel. Booked a Superior double room as I was staying for 5 days. You could barely swing a cat in the room so goodness knows how small a standard double was. Having […] said that I asked someone to fix my shower head which was clogged up and acted more like a fire spray system with water going everywhere with a finemistt as Hull has hard water. If they looked at it hey did not fix it over 2 days. I ate in the restaurant every night as business demanded and the veg selection was the same everynight, food selection economicaly priced. For one night stay for shopping hotel would be OK for business I have stayed in far better hotels in Hull than this one. One of the plus points is that there is ample free parking. Read more

Booked 2 different double bedrooms and found Superior Room was bigger than Standard (very small with bed) and had the added extra of an A/C unit which was working well and very quiet (worth the extra cost). All the staff seemed to be new and while friendly were inexperienced. We ate in the Hotel and the food was ok but staff need more training, especially […] when paying £120 for 3 people. The place was not busy yet the service was slow, table not prepared properly, needed prompting for rolls and side orders were forgotten. The waitress was pleasant but it was unfair to leave her on her own when she was new. (The rest of the waitresses appeared to leave about 15 min before we finished.) the first thing you see when arriving by train in Hull is a statue to the poet, Philip Larkin, and the second thing is the door to the Royal Hotel. Apparently Queen Victoria Sstayed there, hence the 'Royal' tag. As well as being handy for the station, it's also close to all the main attractions at Hull. It's only a few yards to the famous Hull Truck […] theatre, and the main cinema, and a 5 minute walk to the excellent Maritime Museum. Other museums(all free to enter) are a little further away, as is The Deep, an aquarium where you can walk amongst the fishes. The fish & chips in Hull is superb, but beware the fish & chip shops close early. Fortunately, we found they were still serving excellent Haddock, chips and peas at the Stanley's Brasserie, across the road from the Royal Hotel. For a very different experience, the Whalebone brew pub on Wincolmlee is a welcoming waterhole, and a really ancient pub is the George on the evocatively named Land of Green Ginger. For a competely different style of eating, we also tried the highly recommended Raj Pavilion, on Beverly Road. If you want to be inspired, learn about the campaign of Hull resident, William Wilberforce to abolish the slave trade, or look round the Art Gallery, where there's a large painting of a reclining Maureen Lipman, who also hails from Hull. The food and service at the Royal were excellent, and it was with a heavy heart we went for our three quarters empty train home. Read more

We stayed at this hotel for a weekend. we could not fault it in anyway. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The room was clean and very comfortable. The breakfast was really good, free Wi-Fi. The location of the hotel could not be better. It is practically in the train station but free car parking is offered if not arriving by train.

Confusion when I requested to stay another 2 nights. Initially advised I could stay in same room and charge would be a liitle less than first two nights, but asked to re-register the following morning. On re-registering advised I had to change rooms, and charge would be £10 more than quoted previous evening. That evening after a hot sweaty day, no hot […] water to shower. Phone didn't work to report this to reception. Dressed and attended reception desk. So at near midnight changed rooms again. No cold water in basin of this room but too tired to bring it to their attention. Next day negotiated room charge back to original offer. We had a lot of luggage and the were offered no assistance in getting the luggage to our room. I even had to open a door at the rear of the hotel to shorten the distance we had to carry the luggage from the car park. Overall, we got what we paid for, paid very little and got the same.

The Royal hotel is conveniently located within the railway station in the centre of Hull. Location is ideal for travel to KC stadium (20mins walk) and city centre shops (<5mins). Easy check-in and check-out with free parking on-site.
