Reviewed by H of Belfast on Jul 18, 2008

On arrival at the hotel the receptionists insisted that two rooms were unpaid for and insisted that the full room rate for five nights needed to be paid or no room! After providing them with proof of payment with a website receipt they offered no apology for their mistake. The day before our departure I prebooked a shuttle bus for the airport. As the hotels literature states a shuttle bus runs from the hotel every hour and two hours notice is all one needs to give so I thought a day was plenty. After checking out the next morning I reminded the same receptionist of our shuttle bus booking at 8am. It was ten minuted later she told us that the shuttle bus would not be collecting us and it 'was not her problem'. I felt annoyed that I had given a days notice for the booking and they had failed to either book the bus or notify us that our booking was not possible. Perhaps if we had been wearing suits and of an older generation she would have bothered to book it for us in the first place. This unhelpful approach and the fact that they tried to charge us twice for our booking resulted in stressful situations in what should have been a relaxing holiday. Despite these few members of staff the hotel itself was of excellent quality and situated in a pleasant area just outside the main center. The food at the hotel was also of top quality as`was the service of the friendly waiting staff.

The lobby is super cool - huge atrium really modern and clean and pretty. however the rooms were not the same. it did have a flat screen tv and the shower was excellent but it was NOT clean. there were hairs all over my bed and the floor left my feet dirty - didn't want to take off my shoes. the hotel is located in an office park so there is NOTHING around it if you do not have a car. very convenient to the highway however. Our taxi driver took us for a ride so be careful and make sure they know where it is. there is a little gym with treadmill, bike and crosstrainer for fitness minded folks.

The rest of the hotel was very well upkept and full of great artwork. The only negative is the distance from the city centre, but if like us you dont mind a bit of public transit then this hotel will fill anyones requirements.

A little bit out of the way for those looking to hang out in the town centre but even at that the public transport to and from the hotel was easily accesiable. Which is just as well as there is not a lot to do nearby. The staff were all very polite and helpful - if a little hard to locate in the evenings. The hotel was clean and tidy and comfortable the rooms are a decent size and the bathrooms were very clean and comfortable. We found the food a little expensive in the hotel as we hadnt booked in for Breakfast - 17 Euros for a basket of breads.

I have stayed at this Hotel a couple of times now with my wife and we think it's a fabulous hotel. It is very modern and clean. The staff are very helpful if you have any questions or problems. The Car park is a secure underground one, it's about 16 euro's a day to park which isn't too bad. You are about 20 mins from Dam square by tram so it's a bit out of the way but no hustle and bustle to worry about so a good nights sleep.

This hotel is way out of the city center, but its in a nice area that has nothing but apartments and some corporate buildings, so it is very quiet at night. (taking the 195 bus right from the airport is easy, just ask the bus driver to point out the stop.) getting to the city center wasn't that difficult. you had two public transit choices. there was a bus stop right behind the hotel, or you could walk 15 minutes to the tram line 2 stop, just ask the front desk where each is. (the green connexxion bus that stopped there and the gvb tram are owned by two separate companies so the chipkart only worked with whoever you bought it from while i was there.) it'd take 15-30 minutes to get to the center via tram.

Reviewed by A of London on Aug 9, 2009

The room was very modern, decorated in muted shades of beige, black and grey. The well proportioned bathroom was exceptionally well equiped, including decent water pressure in the shower. In Amsterdam it is always a challenge to find a match between quality and price, even some of the 3/4 start hotels are shabby in appearance and very basic, fortunately the Artemis is not in this category, you get the quality you pay for. The only downside from my point of view is the paid parking - being so far outside the centre of Amsterdam I would have expected the parking to be free, it is about 25 EUR per day but if you are only staying on buisiness (i.e. the oligatory 8 hours sleep plus drink at the bar) then you can pay 11 EUR for 12 hours in the evening. It is possible to have your parking card paid at reception and added to your room bill which if you have to fill out regular expense forms makes life a little easier. Another plus point was the late check-in, having arrived after eleven in the evening I didn't need a discussion about calling ahead and what if no-one was here etc. - and joy of joy's I didn't get one - signed straight in, was given my room key with a smile and a swipe of my credit card - could not have been better in that respect.

My room was absolutely beautiful, and the heated floor in the bathroom was a definite plus. This hotel is also located only minutes from both the Van Gogh museum and the Riksmuseum. But I must say that the most incredible aspect of the hotel was the staff. We had a ton of questions for them and the answered every one of them. We got to the hotel 2 hrs before checkin, and were refused early checkin. We ventured into the city to catch some sights for the afternoon. When we returned, the front desk service was exceptionally slow (even with 2 people behind the desk and only 2 people in line). When we finally got our room, we were quite surprised and alarmed to open the door and find a man passed out on the bed, tv on, and smoke pouring out the door. The room as obviously taken. Returning to the front desk, it took us another 35 minutes to get another room. I believe most of this time was because someone was cleaning our next room while we waited. The front desk did not offer much in the form of a formal apology or acceptable answers for the unusual circumstances. Once we got our room (again), we were quite pleased with the room itself. Very modern, clean, and a decent amount of space. The location was mediocre, about a 15 min walk to the tram, and then a 25 min ride in to the tourist sites. Parking was extra.

Prices are very expensive and more so with the low dollar. Attitude is biggest complaint, we felt taken for granted and not made to feel welcomed. Be very careful with taxis, TCA & TCI are recommended by hotels and tourist bureau, others will not meter and flat charge which will be higher. Dissappointed in Amsterdam, not clean and most people encountred had an attitude.

Hotel is very modern and artsey. Service was good and everyone very friendly. Happy that it was a clean place to stay, always my biggest concern. Only downfall was the location. It was far from the city and it took a very long tram ride. I'd recommend staying there just for the luxury.

"Dutch Design" apparently means a room overfull with angular junk that doent do what it is support to do. Turning on the lights requires leaving your room key card in a slot near the door, a recipe for being locked out. Taxi hailing seems to be an issue. A price of ?18 was quoted at the front desk, the final price was ?35. The free wifi was nice. Fast and stable. The breakfast buffet was huge but expensive. The art was ostentatious. Forget about doing any site seeing if you are on an overnight trip. A little out of the city for that.

Very artsy hotel. It was modern and hip, with a good restaraunt. Right near the bus line in a pretty quiet area. Most of the food in restaurant was a bit fancy for our taste ( we couldn't identify most of it) but the hotel was great. Smoking was allowed in the lobby which was good for my husband and not so great for me. Staff was very nice. Bed was very comfortable.I would recomend it to anyone that is traveling without children.

Positives: Really comfortable, nicely (interestingly) decorated room, near freeway and not far from airport, quick walk to train which is a 10 minute direct ride to all the Amsterdam sites. Negatives: Our TV did not work for the majority of our 3 day stay in spite of several complaints to the front desk, the parking in their garage is outragously expensive but there is some street parking a 5 minute walk away, the hotel was in the middle of no where basically, nothing interesting nearby.

The Artemis is a clean, modern hotel. My only critical comment is that it can be challenging to find. It sits back in a cluster of IBM office buildings and the address "John M. Keynesplein 2" doesn't show up on the map at the tram stop. There is a small lighted sign on the main street, but it is not obvious from the tram stop. From Central Amsterdam, take the #2 tram line and get off at Aletta Jacobslaan. Walk down the main street towards the highway overpass. The hotel sign will be on a lampost on the right in front of the IBM buildings. There is a bus that runs to the airport. It takes about 30 minutes and is much cheaper than the Taxis. The breakfast buffet is good and the staff is very helpful.

The parking under the hotel is NOT free and is NOT comp'd for hotel guests. An overnight stay is about $20. You have to pay your parking ticket each time you leave the hotel, so if you park for 2 hours and leave again for more sightseeing, expect to pay $5. Parking for under an hour is free. We did not see any free parking on the streets or nearby. I would go back to the hotel in a heartbeat, I just wish I had known about this beforehand.

This hotel like the name suggested is well designed and modern. Rooms are trendy and clean. I was annoyed that the room service number didn't work and then there was no front desk number so I had to go downstairs to order room service. They said they are in the process of updating their phone directories. Front desk was slow. The location requires a considerable hike just to get to the tram which then takes 20-30 minutes to get you into the city center.

Hotel is Fabulous. Outside of the city but the walk from hotel to tram (or metro) is less than 10 minutes and you are in the city in less than 25 (including the walk from hotel to tram). I stayed there alone for 2 nights and felt completely safe and secure. There isnt a refrig. in room though, that could be fixed... BUT, wi-fi internet is free which overceeded not having a refrig. Bring your own food back and water too as drinks and breakfast are expensive. The cost of the dinner menu is not bad though. Its in the business section with nothing around, however, I felt completely fine walking alone in the dark.

The Hotel was extremely modern, had great design, and was very comfortable. Our rooms were amazing and clean, and I can honestly say the photos do the hotel justice, it's just as beautiful inside and out. The only problem I had was the hotel had no printer, so if you're wanting to check-in for your flight the next day, you cant print out your boarding passes there. And the food prices were outragious, 18 euro per person for a breakfast buffet is hardly reasonable. Although, their dinner is good for the price, a buffet for the same price as dinner is not. Other than that, we got a great deal on Hotels.com and I would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Amsterdam.
