The hotel was ok. There was only one person at the reception and it took him forever (20 plus minutes) to check us in. We checked in at 3 and the staff let us in to an UNCLEAN room. Apparently they haven't cleaned the room before letting us in. We could still see trash and some other things from the previous occupants. We had to call them to clean the […] room and they did so in 3+ hours after we called. Even after the room was supposedly clean, the twin beds in the living room were left unmade! There was NO shampoo or conditioner in the bathroom. The hotel was very far from downtown although there were some decent restaurants in the vicinity. If you want to be near anything in Cancun this is not your location. It is not in the central hotel zone but at the very end far from the restaurants and night life of the city. La Isla is about 5 km down the road, for shopping and some eating but it is not convient to get to. We had the one bedroom suite which was nicely furnished and comfortable. We enjoyed the heated pool and never had any problem getting a pool side lounge. Meals at the on site resturant were generaly good and prices were not outrageous. There is also an on site market with food and snacks that can be consumed in your suite. Our experience was great. Having two families stay in adjoining rooms with a living room/kitchen was a perfect set-up for us. Dishwasher did not work, but that was the only downside. Adjoining hotels were a bonus and added food options. The views were amazing.

Gorgeous rooms and resort. Everything well taken care of and can't say enough. We had a full kitchen, 1 very large bed and 2 small ones plus couch and dining room table with chairs. If you can get the A suites, because the B's are so much smaller and have a really small balcony. We did have to change rooms on Saturday because it's really a time share, […] but the move was smooth and quick. We had a ground floor our first week which was a quick step to the pool which was great and a room on the 7th floor which had a great view of pool and ocean. Jesus at the front desk was rude and tried to stick us in an older room that had not been updated. That is the rooms they give out to hotel rentals. The timeshare people get the nice rooms. I had a week through the time share but Jesus tried to stick me into the hotel rental part for the whole stay. This was our first time to Cancun after visitng the Bahamas twice and Jamaica once. The Royal Islander is a first rate top notch resort at a very reasonable price. We had a two bedroon villa (one king bedroom and one room w/two doubles) that also had a kitchen, living area and even two Murphy beds. The villa was spacious (approx. 1500 sq. ft), clean […] and the kitchen was very well stocked. The decor was modern and the furniture was clean and comfortable. The hotel staff was incredible. We were fortunate in that we had no major incidences come up; that aside, they attended to whatever we needed (quickly and always with a sincere smile). The entire staff prides themselves on making guests feel as if they've come home and not to a resort. We also loved that the resort was fun but quiet. No spring breakers, rowdy college kids, etc. The resort guests were mainly families with small children or older folks (either alone or with grandkids). In Jamaica we stayed at a "family resort" and it felt like being in a Chucky Cheese 24 hrs. a day. The Royal Islander was fun for everyone without being obnoxious. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, were sad to leave and can't wait to go back. We would recommend The Royal Islander to anyone. Read more

A perfect score of 5 is reserved for the Ritz Carlton and the like. Having said that, this is a very good hotel. We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa that provided more than enough space for the four of us (two adults and two teenage boys).The place was clean and well kept, the service was friendly and the amenities were excellent. We liked the convenience […] of having the Royal Market, laundry service, rental car and excursion desk (Thomas More company) right off the lobby.The grounds were well laid out and the onsite restaurants were decent. Even the small things were impressive. I have no tolerance for a shower with low water pressure. The shower in my unit was one of the best I have experienced. I also hate poor air conditioning units, especially in a hot environment. No problem here. The A/C was superior. Just beware of one fact. If you have teenagers, this may not be the best place to stay. There seemed to be an abundance of elderly and families with young kids. I sensed my sons were a bit bored there, but we overcame that with daily excursions to Xel Ha and Selvatica and a visit to Playa del Carmen. All in all though, a very positive experience. Read more

It was more comfortale to spread out with another room. Having a kitchen was more convenient. There was a "Market place" in the complex. Unless you book the 1 bedroom suite the room is small with no amenities. This facility is actually a timeshare condominium so there are no ice machines, no shampoo provided. Only towels an a bar of soap. The pools are great and the bech is also excellent. For the price and a short 1 or 2 night stay it was OK but not for an exteneded stay

Didn't visit the other two hotels connected to us, but it seems to be convenient to have them there if you want a change of pace. Pool was great. The pool deck is 4 stories above the beach level, so it's not a quick walk out to the beach. There is a nice sand bar that reaches out into the ocean for 100 yards or so, and that made playing in the ocean […] more fun. All of the staff were great, the food was ok at the resturaunt, nothing to brag about. The busses that go up to the Sands and the Royal Cancun provide some free transportation to areas other than your hotel. The rooms are awesome, and it's great to have the little grocery store there. We checked prices against the OXXO and it's actually a little cheaper. I'm sure you could get stuff much cheaper at the Walmart, but that is a $40 taxi up and $40 back, so in the end it's just easier to use the stores at the hotels. Would go back to any of the Royal Resorts again, and recommend to everyone. Read more

We arrived to our two room villa at the Royal Islander on Monday, December 26 and found it to be very suitable to meet our needs as a family of five. Each person had his or her own bed. The restroom/vanity/linen closet areas were surprisingly large, and my son actually used one of the linen closets as his dressing room and storage for all of his belongings. […] The large balcony was the favorite resting/eating/lounging spot for everyone. The view overlooking the ocean in the rear and overlooking the bay from the front was fantastic. The staff took good care of us including housekeeping and all of the waiters/bartenders oceanside and poolside. We especially loved the drinks during happy hour. Water temperature could be an issue for some people; wetsuits were helpful for us. As a parent interested in beautiful family photos, we spent one evening walking around the facilities filtering through the connected Royal Caribbean and Royal Mayan and took many pictures with outstanding natural backdrops. The concierge was extremely courteous and visited the room to bring brochures and make himself available for any questions. We anticipated a sales pitch; however, he simply asked if we could possibly give twenty minutes of our time and he let us make that decision hassle free. The only frustration we experienced was an inability to connect to the internet. Nevertheless, we would definitely like to return to the Royal Islander. Read more

This is a safe bet for a couple or a family. Rooms were minimal, but easily sufficient. Wireless internet and TV, nice bathroom, nice balcony. Refrigerator, microwave, iron, coffee pot. The breakfast omelets and the carved […] turkey sandwich on a croissant was my favorite but all the food was delicious. We loved visiting the attached hotels' bars and restaurants as well as pools. Pay for one stay at 5 (3 are attached). It was very relaxing and enjoyable.
