Stayed for two nights in the Colonial room in late March for a romantic weekend away before our first baby arrives. Though the weather was unseasonably cold, it was still worth staying in the room most of the time! The colonial room is one of the smaller rooms and wheelchair accessible with an outside entrance. There is no tub, but there is a shower with body jets which is a good compromise. You have access to a semi-private deck with views of the ocean and the lawn which is pretty great. You walk directly out of your room and are literally just steps from the famous Cliff Walk in Newport, as well as a short walk to the beach. The staff is excellent - there is a chauffeur service that takes you anywhere in town (even to CVS!). Again, we were feeling pretty lazy and the weather wasn't great, so we ordered room service for a basic breakfast and went to the Spiced Pear restaurant in the hotel for dinner. It happened to be Newport Restaurant Week so that was a bonus. All in all, a great place to stay for a romantic-yet-lazy getaway!

Tops in terms of comfort and location. Stayed in Greek Revival room - smallish but lovely terrace facing the ocean and the Cliff Walk. Shower/no tub but lovely fireplace. Nice perk is that the staff will drive you to/from dinner so you dont have to deal with parking. Walk to town is not far either. Loved Annie's on Bellevue for breakfast.

My husband and I cut 4 days out of our vacation to splurge on this place, and we didn't regret it one bit! We stayed in the Greek Revival room. It was one of the smaller and cheaper rooms but it was still exceedingly well done. The staff are the best part of the hotel. They'll get you anything you want. The free champagne, chocolates, and cookies were awesome. Our favorite aspects were: the view of the Atlantic, the free use of the town car transportation, and the heated tile floors in the bathroom. The breakfast was quiet, plentiful, and had a great view. We hated to leave and can't wait to go back!

The inn is in a great location. Overlooks the bay, right on the cliff walk just 3/4 of a mile from the Breakers; beach just a short 5-minute walk away too. And, though it's not downtown (20-25 minute walk), you can walk to Bellevue Ave in about 10 minutes. Better yet, the inn will drive you into town and come pick you up with just a phone call -- this is a great service and should eliminate any concern about not being "in town". The amenities are also great. Fire pit, ingredients for s'mores, in-house restaurant (breakfast isn't a bad deal) and the room was very comfortable. Room was nice, bath was pretty lux. Being on the third floor, we did have a few flights of stairs (not a problem for us, might be for some). All staff are friendly, mostly college kids (so make sure to tip!). Turn-down service also a nice touch. You'll pay for all this comfort, but I was able to use my "free night" so our two-night stay seemed like a bargain. Would probably be worth it at regular price, depending on your budget.

Each room is unique. Ours was small with not enough table surfaces in either the bedroom or bath. Everything else about the place was outstanding. First class service, excellent food and bar, and complimentary car service to anywhere around town. The location, right on Cliff Walk can't be beat. We'll go back next time in town.

The type of hotel is reminiscent of where Presidents stay. If you wish for a "sweet," you ought to skip top floor Presidential suites on skyscrapers and opt for one that is characteristic of an era in history. Don't skimp on costs for room service or dinner on the veranda or dining room. The thought and time put into the ambiance or climate of the hotel could have been orchestrated in Heaven above. There are no bedbugs to concern yourself with since the bedding is the most luxurious you'll ever find. The pampering is endless since you can order food through room service or get Spa Voyage to take you to your zen spot. Also, you can be dropped off/picked up by the valet instead of driving in traffic. Basically there is no other place to choose if you wish to be swept away. The quiet atmosphere is guaranteed on non-weekend nights. But you might catch a glimpse of wedding-goers on the weekend nights. Staying in two different suites allowed ocean views, but there was plenty to see in the garden-facing Gothic Suite including Netflix. The staff is accomodating, but be sure to follow up on things with them. The other hotels that compare are also highly regarded, however none would have the same personality. My husband and I were calmed just by virtue of its splendor. This resort has no need for anything additional because there is so much to do there and in-town. We would like to recommend this hotel to anybody who needs to renew their love for each other. It works.

The hotel rooms are all beautifully designed, each room with different period styles. I guess I have to come back so very often to experience them all. The building itself is a mansion as a matter of fact the oldest one on the stunning cliff walk. Better than the physical hotel is its human touch. All the hotel staff made us want to return even faster! Do not miss out on this phenomenal place.

"Great location and staff, but a tourist trap..."
07/06/15 Wilton L London, United Kingdom
A beautiful house, set in lovely grounds, amazing staff (truly amazing), the biggest problem is that if you get a garden floor room, you have absolutely no privacy whatsoever, we came for three days of rest and relaxation and sadly got neither. Refuse to stay on the garden floor, as we should have done. The receptionists led by Haley could not be nicer or more helpful. The drivers are amazing. They have to do a few things to remedy the problem, it has the potential to reach four/five stars, needs some money to update some of the facilities (showers, noisy a/c condensers outside rooms), add a gym, at $1,000++ per night these things and a peaceful stay should be taken for granted.

I had high expectations for our stay at this hotel and the hotel actually exceeded my expectations. We have stayed in many wonderful hotels and this is definitely one of the best. I would recommend it without reservation. From the moment we arrived, everything was perfect. Our room was on the second floor and was extremely large and comfortable.. The staff was outstanding. We were addressed by name and No request seemed to be too much to ask. The car service is great. The young men who drove us to dinner were pleasant and interesting. And, the location is terrific. I can't wait to return.

"Wonderful stay again"
06/24/15 GSR70 New Jersey
This is our second (of hopefully many) annual June stays at The Chanler. Everything was amazing as last time, gorgeous hotel and the staff were top notch. Everyone from the front desk to the chauffeurs and the dining room were 100 percent professional and great at service. Some teeny tiny things I noticed that just wanted to bring to attention. 1. Please bring back the marshmallows, while the cookies were out of this world I love the Idea of s'mores at the fire pit. 2. It rained one night and the next morning you didn't have the wind barriers up for breakfast making it super hot for guests. These. Need to be taken down before guests, I noticed they finally came down at 4pm and it was nice out all day. 3 woke up one morning and went out to the hill to sit and there were bowls and bits of shrimp on the lawn with cups and dishes too, this is a very simple thing you need to have the lawn pristine, again this was at 10am so staff needs to check first thing before guests get up. 4 finally in our last day (a Tuesday) we wanted to have breakfast outside (it was beautiful) and we were told they weren't serving outside. The hotel needs to note that guests come there for the outdoor space so this was disappointing. Just those tiny things that a hotel like yours needs to pay attention to as these details make hotels stand out. , so of course we will stay again bec it is a very special hotel, please continue to offer great service

"Basecamp for Cliff Walk"
06/23/15 Jim1947 Ohio
The Chanler exceeded all expectations. We were guests twice in a ten day period. From the young and hip people at checking, to the very knowledgable free ride valets, to the really fine kitchen production, we were wowed by the high service level. We stayed in the Briar Rose and Georgian rooms - both quite different. The former had a private walled garden, extensive seating area, hot tub, large lawn. The Georgian Room was on the third floor overlooking the beach and Cliff walk, offering a beautiful sunrise vista. The amenities in each room were excellent. We were guests in the formal dining room, where the food is truly excellent. Breakfast on the porch in the breeze and shade was a great start to every morning. We were there for six nights, and will be back again.

"Feels like your own private mansion with a few other guests. Exquisite."
06/23/15 Iwanttoseeit West Palm Beach, Florida
My husband and I were traveling around the Newport and Jamestown area and were having such a lovely time we decided to find a hotel to stay the evening. From the restaurant we were having lunch at, my husband pointed to a place on Cliff Walk, went online and found it to be The Chanler with one room available. We booked it. Knowing that it was the last room available out of 14 rooms total, we expected to have a less than desirable room. Upon our arrival, the smiling valet accepted our ready made luggage of grocery shopping backs with no hesitancy. He had a wonderful sense of humor, making light of our spur of the moment hotel stay. We were pleasantly greeted by Hally at the front desk and made welcome with complimentary glasses of Spiced Pear Champagne. We enjoyed our drinks outside on the lush green grass and white adirondack chairs overlooking the Easton Bay, while our room was being prepared. We were pleasantly surprised when we taken to our room, it was absolutely beautiful with a small gas fireplace, decorated in Federal accents and fabrics. The bathroom was very well appointed with a lovely extra large jet bath and a separate shower. The bed and linens were dreamlike and extremely comfortable. Turndown service included lovely chocolates, robes and slippers set out. Now, you may be wondering what our "last available room's" shortcomings were. Upon opening the blinds, the bottom half of the glass was frosted. A tippy toed stretch to peek above that was the roof top, which did overlook the water, but not quite visible. The staff walkway ran across the roof, a way to service the small hotel without being seen by the guests. This was the Federal Room. We weren't disappointed because we expected a caveat, and I'm sure the room price reflected the drawback. We were more than satisfied with the room, as we were only there for the evening. We took our supper in the restaurant downstairs and then sauntered out to the fire pit to enjoy our last drink for the evening. Throw blankets were a nice touch, draped over the chairs for guests. This is truly a beautiful and upscale elegant boutique type hotel, that we will visit again. Oh, and they provided car service for your needs. Perfect if you take the cliff walk and decide at the end that a drive back would be needed. The Chanler is located on the very beginning of the Cliff Walk, entry off the grounds of the hotel.

We stayed here for a few nights during a New England tour we were doing and I am so glad we did. From the moment we got there, the customer service was impeccable and we were made to feel so welcome. We stayed in the French Provincial room and the views were amazing. The bathroom had a jacuzzi that looked out to the beach and the ocean and the double shower was impressive. This hotel is not cheap but you get what you pay for that's for sure. If we ever make our way back to Newport then I will definitely book in to The Chanler again and hopefully for a longer stay!

"A walk at the Chanler!"
06/14/15 Mary Ellen C
For our 45th wedding anniversary we chose a stay at The Chanler at Cliff Walk based on a glowing recommendation by a friend. We were met by a friendly courteous valet who greeted us who escorted us to the front desk before taking our luggage to our room and parking our car. The check-in process was made quite special when we were each given a glass of champagne to enjoy while we were acquainted with the hotel. Our room was spectacular with a wonderful view. Our meals were excellent and the location - right on the north end of the Cliff Walk - was ideal. The staff was friendly and professional and made our special occasion perfect.

thanks to the wonderful staff of the Chanler, our wedding was a dream come true. We were treated like royalty, and yet like family, from the moment of our arrival. No request went unanswered, and was provided with professionalism, warmth, and the utmost courtesy. The bar was a great place to relax and enjoy the company of other guests. Our meals were memorable, especially our wedding luncheon in the dining room with our own balcony and ocean views. We stayed in the Martha's Vineyard villa and we were thrilled with the luxury of the amenities, making full use of the hot tub, sauna, and enjoyed lovely views from our balcony. We can't wait to return for our anniversary. thanks again to everyone, and a special thanks to Kate and our valets!

"Grand yet average"
06/08/15 arnabs Boston, Massachusetts
The Victorian room was grand and the amenities were good. The views of the Easton Bay and the lawn were very nice. A good place to be if you want to chill out in a room. The fitness center is not in the property even though one could avail of the included transportation. The included breakfast was quite ordinary with a simple selection of beverage and an entree. Except for the valet, the staff in general didn't seem to be really happy to be with the guests, a big departure from our recent visit to the Weekapaug Inn. We didn't try the in-house dining at Spiced Pear as there were much better rated restaurants outside. The cliff walk was just outside which is pretty convenient for those who're planning to visit any of the mansions or just having a peaceful walk.

"Wonderful Boutique Hotel but poor service and not worth the price"
06/07/15 QStar7 Boston, MA
We recently stayed at the Chanler for a short visit. The hotel is what you would expect from a small boutique hotel, but inspite of the small size their service was a crawl - both in the dining room, and outside of it. Separately, the showers have VERY poor pressure. it is almost like a trickle. Rooms need updating.
