Hotel was quite a distance-uphill walk from train station. On arrival entrance locked no one there- on exploration of alley behinid found another office. Would never have found it at night. Everything was very good except for the bizarre organization of the bathroom. Not unlike a number of budget hotels, the shower is in a depression in the corner of the bathroom. Problem is, the shower head is high and the water flow cannot be reduced, with the result that the shower stream pushes water beyond the boundary of the shower portion. Result: […] a shower means water on the whole floor, No big deal to dry it with the bath mat, for the surface of the floor is water repellent and this is easy to do. Still, one has to wonder why they would not have dealt with this annoyance. In addition, the sink is small and the shelf over it makes it very difficult to rinse after tooth brushing or shaving without spilling water on the floor. Given the amazing breakfast (huge selection and as much food as one would like), I would think a little in the breakfasts might be sacrificed to improve the bathrooms. In a quiet residential neighborhood just a block from one of the main streets in Edinburgh (frequent bus service) and from several small supermarkets and other shops. The room was small but clean. The bathroom was very small and there was no floor sill between the shower and the commode, just a fabric shower curtain so water tended to splash/run from […] the shower area into the commode area, leaving uncomfortable amounts of water on the floor. I have never seen a shower set-up like that. Separate faucets for cold water and for hot in the sink so you had to choose one or the other when running the water. Hotel staff very nice. I arrived early and was able to leave my luggage, although the luggage storage area was outside in a locked stall and was self-service -- there was no luggage tagging system so i was a bit nervous about someone else taking my luggage. However, the facility is not advertised on the street as a hotel so there is no wander-in traffice from the street so this didn't worry me too much. For the price, this was an ok room and experience. I especially liked being close to what I wanted to see and to supermarkets. Read more

Kenneth Mackenzie Suite is NOT a traditional hotel. If pampering, room service and round-the-clock guest care is important to you, I wouldn't book them. That being said, if you desire (though spartan) safe, clean, comfortable accomodations in close proximity to many Edinburgh attraction and delicious and filling hot & cold breakfast offerings at a good […] value, then this may be the place for you! No, the rooms aren't especially large and I didn't dig the shower that wet the entire floor and toilet, but these were small concerns considering my bed was surprisingly comfortable, the television was crisp, clear and had many channels for the few nights I relaxed inside and the staffers who cooked and served breakfast were amiable, obliging and got each morning off to a great start. My one big complaint about Kenneth Mackenzie is that because it's not a traditional hotel, there isn't 24/7 front desk/reception assistance. Though I never really had occassion to need anything early in the morning or after 6pm, I can imagine plenty of scenarios where I would have been out of luck! I will say, when there was staff in reception, with the exception of one y oung lady, everyone was friendly and helpful, especially Tom. Overall, I had quite a pleasant stay at Kenneth Mackenzie and would most likely re-book if I were to return to Edinburgh. Read more

The room and bathroom were pretty small. Expecially the bathroom. The sink was super tiny. No tub, shower was only a small area with a curtain divided from the toilet and sink. Every time you took a shower, the whold floor was soaking wet. Only good thing there were the breakfast (included), a lot of variety.

BUt, it is a clean room. HOWEVER, If you are in beautiful Edinburgh then you should not be sleeping much nor needing the BR too much. I stayed at Kennet Mackenzie for only one night. The rooms are small and there is no elevator. So if you have a large suitcase (which I did not have) you will be dependent on the desk clerk to take it upstairs. The personnel at the desk were all very courteous and their breakfast is sumptous. There was a coffe maker and toileteries were provided. The rooms are not air-conditioned, but I kept a window open to cool the room. A nice clean and convenient location for hotel that was a nice retro trip back to university days. Room is a bit small but perfectly suitable for a no fuss overnight stay. The receptionist was friendly too and good breakfast. Please note no elevator is available if you have heavy luggage. Bathroom has all the usual amenities.

This place is simple, clean, relatively basic and just what I want. My only three mild gripes would be the duvet on the single bed (the single duvet is perhaps the most useless item of home furnishing ever conceived, as it rarely covers the occupant properly. In truth, it's not really the fault of Kenneth Mackenzie Apartments but of the bedding market […] in general); the great delay on arrival at reception, where both staff members were trying to sort out problems with one booking (one could, perhaps, have fielded the "easy answers" of those booking in without problems); and the fact that the price seems to have risen by quite a considerable amount since the first time I stayed there. On the positive side are the warmth, the simplicity, the location and the breakfast (even if the start time of 07:30 was a little late for comfort). I'll certainly be looking to book again next year. Sure, it's a former dormitory. But it comes with a fantastic breakfast, is right in the middle of old Edinburgh, and has a really comfortable bed and chair. Top it off with an ensuite washroom and you're looking at a great hotel for a wonderful price! The only thing missing is free wifi.

We were lead to believe that this was a budget boutique hotel by the pictures on the website. But in actual fact it was old student accommodation with old dilapidated furniture, nothing like the pictures that the Expedia website portrayed. The shower curtain was moldy and the shower head sprayed water all over the bathroom except for the area under the shower head, spraying the toilet and destroying the toilet paper. Disappointed that the cleaner knocked on the door, then tried to enter the room at 0900 on the day of check out even though checkout wasn't until 1030. We understand that room prices would have been greatly inflated due to the Fringe Festival but we do not believe we got the room we paid for. It's not completely correct to class this as a hotel - it struck me that these are student halls that are used for accommodation outside of term time. Having said that, the standard was excellent, the room was very clean, bed very comfortable. The bathroom was very small, but perfectly fine.
