If you plan to get around the SF consider using the public transport system because walking the hills can be difficult. Stayed here for a convention recently and this hotel was close to everything. The neighborhood was good. Lots of art schools and little coffee shops near by. I did alot of research before selecting a hotel for a SF family vacation. I read the concerns about the neighborhood, etc. The overwhelming positive ratings prompted me to disregard this concern and book at the Steinhart. When booking my hotel, I was under the impression that it was in Union Square. Unfortunately, the hotel is located in an area known by locals as the Tender Knob - roughly 2 blocks from the Tenderloin. While not a horrible neighborhood, it's not great either. Luckily, the hotel has security code access (2 doors), which seemed to keep the undesirables […] out. Besides location, the hotel is not staffed 24 hours a day. When I needed to check out for my flight, there was no one at the front desk. I just left my key sitting on the front desk with a note and left. I'm assuming this was okay, but it seemed a bit odd. The decor is meant to be historic. There are some nice features -- beautiful woodwork in the lobby and in the rooms. However, it looks like the hotel cut corners on the upgrades. The bathroom counter is cheap as is the kitchen counter/cabinets. However, I did appreciate having a kitchen to prepare meals when I didn't want to eat out. Also, the hotel seemed to be very clean. Despite some nice features, the cheap upgrades and bad location keep me from recommending this hotel to others. I would encourage persons looking for a hotel in San Fran to look elsewhere. Read more

It REALLY saddens me to write this but I think that people should be armed with the facts. The Steinhart is truly a stunning hotel. The service was excellent and the room was amazing. As a hotel, I would definitely give it 5 stars. I wondered why this hotel was so cheap, upon my arrival, I found out why. The neighborhood is like a shantytown. I walked […] from the BART station to the hotel (a 5 minute walk) and I actually felt scared (I am usually not threatened in this situation at all). I was surrounded by at least 70 aggressive people on my short journey shouting and fighting on the streets. The roads stunk like strong stale urine. It is EVERYWHERE and you cannot escape the stench, it literally took your breath away - I have never experienced anything like it. Every time I left the hotel I was in the same situation. I have noted that many reviewers of hotels state that their hotel was in a bad area, and I usually found this an unfair assessment. I have stayed at some of these hotels and whilst there was the occasional homeless person, it was really not that bad. As beautiful as this hotel was - it actually wrecked my SF experience - I left not wanting to ever come back to SF. Luckily I came back later in my trip and stayed at a hotel on Market street and my love for SF was reignited. Whilst I would recommend the hotel itself to everyone, it pains me to say that I cannot recommend it considering the area. This hotel is really only suitable for people with a car. Read more

Standard of apartment was good, furniture quite eclectic mix but good quality and clean. This wonderful boutique apartment more than met our expectations! We were amazed at the beautiful features of this 100 year old building. The deluxe studio apartment that we rented provided us with plenty of space, a well equipped kitchen, bathroom with a tub and shower and plenty of closet space. It became our home away from home. Das Haus liegt in einer guten Lage, wenn man eine Unterkunft rund um den Union Square (ca. 10 Min. zu Fuss) sucht. Insbesondere liegt die Strasse (Sutter St) hoch genug, so dass man oberhalb von den nicht immer sehr vertrauenserweckenden […] Strassenecken des Tenderloin-Viertels gut zu zentralen Punkten wie Union Sq/Powel St gelangt. Das Steinhart ist nach eigenem Bekunden ein Hotel mit eingeschränktem Service. Das heisst konkret: - Housekeeping (Reinigung) nur 1x in der Woche während der Belegung eines Zimmers - Kein Fitness-Beteich etc. - Rezeption nur bis 23h besetzt - Kein Frühstücksangebot Dafür bekommt man rel. geräumige Studios zu guten Preisen in einer Nachbarschaft mit kleinen Lebensmittelgeschäften und Restaurants. Gerade die kleinen Geschäfte geben im Zusammenhang mit der eigenen Küche in den Studios die Möglichkeit, den Aufenthalt in der Stadt bezahlbar zu gestalten. Eine Fussnote: die Zimmer haben keine Klimaanlage. Dies ist selbst im Hochsommer in SF auch nicht erforderlich. Sollte es jedoch einmal wieder erwarten aussergewöhnlich heiss werden, könnte dies ein Nachteil sein. Sonst empfinde ich es dagegen eher als Vorteil, dass man zum Lüften einfach die Fenster aufmachen kann. Mir hat das Konzept und das Hotel gut gefallen, so dass ich das Haus empfehle. Read more

元日の到着時フロントが不在で、系列のホテルに行きウエルカムキットを受領しようとしたが、受領できず再度シュタインハートホテルに戻った。 到着時にマネージャーがたまたまフロントを不在にしていたとのことで、迷惑をかけたことをお詫びいただき、スタンダード１ベットルームからスイートにグレードアップしていただいた。 到着時は大変な思いをしたが、アップグレードしていただき、快適な滞在ができたとともに、ホテルのフロントの方にいろいろサポートしていただき、とても感謝して帰国した。

Hotel Steinhart war ein absoluter Glücksfall. Wir hatten ein Hotelzimmer in einem Apartmenthaus erwartet und bekamen eine ca. 60qm große Wohnung mit 2 Räumen, Bad, Ankleidezimmer und Küche! Alles war sehr sauber und überaus komfortabel eingerichtet. Das Apartment verfügte über ein Doppelbett, ein zusätzliches Schrankbett, 2 Flatscreen TVs, DVD Player […] sowie einer vollausgestatteten Küche mit Herd, Mikrowelle, großem Kühlschrank und Kaffeemaschine. Ein Ort, den ich ruhigen Gewissens jedem San Francisco Reisenden ans Herz legen kann. Zimmerservice gab es einmal pro Woche (immer Montags) aber das ist auch mehr als ausreichend gewesen. Read more
