Eugenia Hotel - Quito

Very cute old-fashioned hotel with great service. Wifi in central areas. Telephone in room did not work but it was not a problem for us since we didn't need it. 0430 wakeup exactly on time, taxi waiting for us at the time we requested it.

From the outside, the Eugenia hotel, with its metal security gate in front, doesn't look like much. But the interior is well done, very clean, great lighting, and excellent service. But if you are tired and want a good night sleep, this hotel is poorly sound-proofed and not for you, unfortunately. Road noise is very loud. We have stayed here four times, now. This time our flight landed at 11:30pm. Our room was reserved until midnight. We contacted the hotel and made them aware of our late arrival. By the time we cleared immigration and customs and got a taxi to the hotel is was almost 1:30 am. But the staff was waiting and cheerful as ever to welcome us. The hotel was somewhat quaint but my room overlook the atrium and was VERY noisy early in morning and late at night. One of the closets in my room reeked of mold and the walls had visible mold on them. The bathroom fan did not work because it looked as if someone took a sledge hammer to it, and the floor and wall tile grout was either missing or filithy. […] The breakfast buffet was pitiful. There were three inedible and unidentifiable "warm" dishes, two choices of over ripe cut up fruit, 3 choices of watered down juices, 3 choices of dry cereal and a couple of choices of bread. Upon arrival we found the ront gate tightly seured with a heavy cable most probabley to it's seedy location. there ws no heat or hot water. no lock on the door other then what was on the doorknob. nsy neighborhood very smal room dark and dank.

The hotel is very unique. However due to the late night manager on staff and his overall attitude to assist with a broken handle on a window in the room which allowed for the window to stay open finally an employee came to handle the situation. This made the experience not good and a feeling of being unsafe.

Very clean, lovely decor, a real oasis of comfort. The restaurant food is OK & much appreciated after a day of sight-seeing. Not much in the immediate area without a taxi ride for safety. Good- • The décor of the hotel is beautiful! I feel like I’m more in Paris than in Quito. • Brian, who is at the Front Desk during the day, speaks excellent English! He should–he just moved to Quito after living in NJ, USA, for 20+ years. • Everything in the hotel is very clean. • There are lots of great western style restaurants and bars in the immediate […] area–my tour guide called it “Gringo-land.” • Breakfast is good and includes some hot dishes like scrambled eggs. They even serve hot milk with their freshly individually brewed coffee. • They have several English (American) TV channels (abet with Spanish subtitles). • Wi-Fi Internet in the rooms was free and good. • I feel safe in the area. Bad- • There is no heating in the room, and it got to be quite chilly some nights. • Water pressure was great, but there are sporadic times when the water isn’t hot – only mildly warm. It happened twice during my nine day stay. • They have a small table in each room, but the chair is small and low –uncomfortable to sit at. • Was charged for a single slice of cheese for breakfast one morning. I asked for cheese on my eggs the last day and was actually changed $1.34 for it – kinda petty. • Checkout was a mess! I never got a 3A wake-up call, was charged for bottles of water I never ordered, they wanted to charge me 8% extra for using a credit card, and had to wake up the guard to open the gate to let me out. Frankly, I was a little amazed by the staff at Eugenia Hotel in Quito. They went above and beyond in absolutely every way. I actually stayed there two different nights as a stopover to and from Galapagos... The staff is not just friendly, they are accommodating for just about any request, to the point that I ended up asking myself "How lucky was I […] to find this place??" I should also add that I ate in their in-house restaurant on my final leg, and their Chilean Sea Bass was outstanding, for just $7.80 USD. The chef even came out and asked me how I wanted my potatoes... I asked if a baked potato was possible (I HATE french fries; papas can be an acceptable alternate if cooked correctly, but nothing beats a fresh baked potato)... and indeed when the meal was served, it was a fresh baked potato! The sea bass wasn't grilled as advertised, but still delicious -- NOT overcooked! That is a common mistake in restaurants, but at the Eugenia, the fish is prepared with great care to not be overcooked, and you don't even have to ask specifically "please don't overcook the fish!" The chef knows how to cook to perfection! The front desk speaks English; ask for a cab and you have it within minutes. I do however encourage all readers to just spend a few hours learning basic Spanish. It's not that hard and helps you in the end... I normally HATE hotels in Europe as the rooms are generally so small that if you open the door, the door hits the bed. Not so at Eugenia. I had a very decent sized room, great en-suite bathroom, very comfortable bed, etc. I was more than pleased for the first time in probably two decades with the room quality and spaciousness (for a European hotel room.) There is a free breakfast in the morning that is absolutely wonderful.
