Was at the hotel for less than 3 hrs and was at the front desk with issues 3 times. I sat in wet caulk by the kiddie pool and in the room had what the hotel called "rust" coming out of the ac unit all over the bed not once but twice before they finally switched our room. The manager left us a bottle of champagne and a note hoping that we enjoy the rest […] of our stay. The pools were great but the rooms could use a little improving the hotel was hot and musty. For the price we would expect a lot more!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Just ok place."
The stay was ok. The beds were horrible!!!! The mattress was about the cheapest thing I've ever seen or slept on. The towels and washcloths were also very bad. Very old and were torn and frayed and very thin. For the price we paid it wasn't worth it. They need to replace all the mattresses and linen. Other than that it wouldn't be too bad.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Fabulous Place to stay"
Outstanding, everything you could want plus ten times more. 3 pools, hot tub, sandy beach, boardwalk type dock/marina w/ gazebos, lawn swings, shuffleboard, horse shoes, tennis courts, BBQ grills, camp fire pit. The kids ages 6 & 8 didn't want to leave! Definately worth every pennyGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Rooms were outdated and a little small for the price. Breakfast was also not up to par for price, just cereal and hard muffins.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not Happy with the room."
The room had a very bad odor in it. Had to leave the window open the entire time we were there. Staff not very friendly. I would not call this a resort at all!!!!Genuine Expedia guest review
Too bad the pool wasn't ready for use - it was 85 degrees last weekend! Breakfast should be described as continental as it was minimal - cereal, juice and small rollsGenuine Expedia guest review
"Sittin' on the dock of the bay"
Hotel was clean and well maintained. The location is serene and the grounds are very well kept. The continental breakfast is an added touch. I would stay again, no doubt.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great family get away for a long weekend"
A great hotel (and cottages) for family fun. Stayed with our two pre-teens in a Queen suite and spacing was fine for a 3 night stay. Don't expect luxury, but clean (although daily housekeeping services marginal) and lots to do. Pros: Front desk staff very helpful, outdoor pools (3, but small), shuffleboard, volleyball, fire pit, tennis court, corn hole, gazebos, picnic tables. Cons: No onsite restaurant (but did have free breakfast of cereals, muffins etc,), no work out room (but a walking trail around a marsh across the street). That all said, if the weather would have been bad, we'd have nothing to do in the area unless the trip was centered around Cedar Pointe.
"What a view."

We just had a wonderful stay at South Beach Resort. The 3 pools were clean and inviting, the complimentary breakfast was great and the room had a wonderful view. The people working were friendly and helpful.
My husband and I went to stay at this hotel. When we got there we were skeptical. The girls at the front desk just stared at us and we're not friendly at all. When we got to our room they were really outdated and in the bathroom there was water damage on the ceiling and black mold!! I couldn't believe it. My husband and I went to tell the girl at the front desk and they didn't even apologize. She said oh well that's not my fault. I couldn't believe it I was so mad. She offered us another room so we decided to check it out. It smelled like mildew and the carpet was bunching up from water damage. The bed was bending in the middle and it was just dirty. We left immediately and considering we didn't check in till 10:00 pm and had no where to go we still left. They didn't apologize when we left and couldn't refund my money. We called and spoke to the manager the next morning and he said he would handle getting us our money back. However he never apologized or anything. Horrible experience!!

"Our 2nd Visit to South Beach Resort.....Meh...."
08/14/14 ds521 Niles, Ohio
Don't get me wrong....this is not a terrible place but I think you could probably do better for the money. Our room was on the 3rd floor with a decent view of Lake Erie. The room itself is clean but some updating is needed - paint is chipping around the doors, etc. This resort has a bit of an identity crisis - they claim to be a Resort Hotel but it's closer to a campground than any resort hotel we've ever visited. There are many cabins that line the property in front of the hotel which give it a very campy vibe. It's probably fine if you have a large group that wants a place to get a lot of people down. Something that turned us off was the daily/nightly hoe-downs that took place right in front of our balcony. Large groups put up tents and just partied away. It was loud and hard for us to enjoy the lake-front balcony room that we paid extra for. They claim that they have 3 pools, one of which is a "quiet" adult pool. However, when we were there at least 40 people were down there at the "quiet" pool and at least 20 of them were loud kids, running and jumping into the pool and hot tub. One guy even brought some kind of old boom box and blasted his music...and that was the "quiet" pool. Obviously, no one is really monitoring the grounds. We've been to many hotels that include a free breakfast in the stay....most of these businesses do a pretty decent job with their breakfast fare. The SB also claims to have breakfast included. However, the low quality sweet rolls and limited variety of cereal, etc. makes this a not very appealing breakfast option. They ABSOLUTELY need to buy a couple more toasters - it's ridiculous to make guests wait in a long line for a half hour just so they can make some toast. The breakfast for us was pretty much a waste of time - we did it once and that was enough. We have to say that while we really like the concept of a hotel that has lake-front rooms, this one has enough negatives that we'll probably be looking to stay somewhere else next time.
The overall appearance is ok. Rooms are small for the price. There must be little to no insulation. We could hear our neighbors conversations and above our room we could the people walking back and forth. The jacuzzi tubs can not be used after 10 pm due to this problem. Our bed was broken and sat on the floor. It took 2 trips to the hotel desk to get this fixed. Our toilet also overflowed n the middle of the night. Will not be returning.
"Resort is Perfect for Families"

Our family reunion was recently held here. Villas and hotel rooms are available. 3 pools, playground, volleyball, fishing are on the premises. A log fire was set and lit every night, all ready for our s'mores! Location to all the other islands and amusements are very close. We will definitely go back.
"Great Place for Family Fun!"

Stayed for a long weekend with my family, including three young children. We had a blast. Pools were clean and fun. Beach close by. My cousins brought his boat over for the day. Kelleys Island Ferry is close by. Lots to do within 15-30 minutes, but you don't have to leave because it is so much fun at the resort! Many other families similar to use were present and also having a blast!
"WAY overpriced and just pretty awful overall"

My family (husband, daughter and I) stayed in the hotel for a long weekend. The outside gives a deceivingly good impression. The hotel rooms themselves are nothing to get excited about, and our room had a list of issues so long it borders on ludicrous. The only people I ever saw working looked like KIDS, maybe 21-22, so we reluctantly, and perhaps wrongly, didn't bother to bring up most of our concerns. For what this room cost per night, this hotel should be MUCH nicer than it is. In no particular order, this is what we encountered: The beds are very old and flimsy. One of the beds' box springs was broken and wouldn't stay on the frame of the bed, one entire side sagged almost to the floor when we sat on it. My daughter managed to sleep in the middle of the bed. On our first morning, we noticed water dripping from the ceiling light fixture nearest the door. We did call the front desk and reported this, as it is of course a fire hazard. We had no follow up or response. The next morning, we could hear the people upstairs showering and the leak was back. We notified the front desk again and were told the maintenance man was at church (Sunday), but she would definitely let him know. Again, no follow up or evidence anything had been addressed. This brings me to the noise--not only can you hear your neighbors showering, you hear every move they make on all sides. The walls and floor/ceilings must be paper thin. The separate vanity sink was HORRIBLY clogged from the time we checked in. Not a crisis but really pretty gross and makes the sink difficult to use. It filled up quickly even while trying to wash hands or brush teeth. The light fixture between the beds did not work. The "continental breakfast" was HORRIBLE. Granted, it was described as a cold breakfast, which is fine. There was bread, mini muffins, the only bagels were the flat, sandwich-style bagels. WHO DOES THAT?? Just small individual butters, no cream cheese or peanut butter. There was a bowl of apples and oranges that still had the produce stickers on them, I suspect not washed. On Sunday morning they ran out of coffee. There were a few containers of peach yogurt and 3 types of cereal. Our room was a first floor "queen view" room. The view of the lake, while a bit far, was nice, we could see the lake from our room, though depending on the room you were in, that would not be the case. There was a small patio with 2 chairs for sitting and apparently, smoking. There were multiple occasions when I smelled cigarette smoke clear into our room because the air unit was drawing in smoke from an adjacent patio. YUCK. The continuous fan button on the air unit didn't work. The room at times felt very musty and stuffy. On the first morning housekeeping did not make our beds and the housekeeping consisted of replacing the towels and toiletries and emptying the trash. I'm never above making my own bed, but for the price we paid I expect the room to be really clean each day. It was not. I did ask the front desk about housekeeping when we informed them about the leak in the light and she passed it on. The second day the beds were made. Several other reviewers have mentioned the rough towels. Let's just say, you won't need that loofah. I utilized the laundry facilities; the washer and dryer were functional, but the laundry room was very musty and not clean at all. Calling the place a resort is a fantastic overstatement. As I said, there were so many issues after a while it just felt ridiculous. The kids working there were pleasant, they let us use the microwave in the breakfast area to pop popcorn one night, (there aren't microwaves or fridges in the rooms). But I'm not convinced that if I had reported all these things as they came up that anything other than me being branded as a crabby, demanding lady would have occurred. I have had much more pleasant hotel stays at chain hotels that were half the price. Under no circumstances would we stay here again.
"Good for Families"

Our family of 17 spent a week in two cottages. We rented a villa and a cape cod cottage. The good - it's a great place for families with children as there are LOTS of family-friendly activities on site and nearby. The pools were great. The atmosphere is very casual and laid back which is exactly what we wanted. It almost had a campground atmosphere. The kitchen was well-equipped. The bad - the cottages needed a thorough cleaning (corners, bathroom vents, under furniture, etc.) but the kitchens and bedrooms were adequately clean. It appears as though only superficial cleaning has been done for quite some time. The cape cod cottage sleeps 12 people, has two bathrooms, but only has one shower. The larger bathroom has a two person jacuzzi which is great for a romantic stay but someone wanting a romantic vacation probably wouldn't rent a 12-person cottage. With a good cleaning, I'd give the place four stars. With another shower, as well, I'd give it five.
