How convenient. 10 minute walk to train station, near the old city and artisanal shopping. Very good restaurants with a lot of choice just minutes away walking. The Hotel Ruetli is part of a European hotel chain, and is very much a European type hotel in that the room is somewhat small and a bit spartan, but entirely comfy and super clean. Additionally, this hotel's "signature" is that it is decorated with "street art," for example, my room had a huge, colorful grafitto on one wall akin to to what you might […] see on the side of an IRT subway car or the wall of an underpass. And each room is different and has free postcards featuring the art in that particular room. Tres avant-guarde. But the location is very near the main train station (which has innumerable trains to the airport) and it's only a brief walk to many sites such as the shopping on Banhofstrasse and the main art museum (Kunshaus). It serves a plain but adequate continental breakfast to guests, and no other meals, but there are many eateries very close to the hotel; I found the Starbucks a few doors down to be helpful as it was very cold when I was there and it also has much more hearty fare than in the States. We only stayed one night at this hotel. It is convient to the train station and also in a good, fun area with air conditioning something you will not find so easily in Switzerland. The breakfast was good. The hotel front desk staff was very lacking in information about the area and didn't communicate well in English (as comparied to all the other hotels […] we stayed at in Switzerland). We were delighted that when we checked in early they had a room available for us. After going to the room we saw that the floors had not been cleaned and the bathroom floor was gross with many hairs on the floor plus the mirror was not clean. It gave me the feeling that they just wiped down the sink and put in clean towels. It took everything I had to step into the tub. It looked clean but since the other areas had not been clean how was I to know if the tub was. Also, the toliet didn't have the usual paper tag on it that said it was clean like all the other hotels did that we stayed at for this trip. We told the front desk staff that the room needed to be clean and then we went out for a couple of hours and returned to the hotel to rest for awhile. While taking a nap the hotel maid came in to clean. This was over 4 hrs. after I had reported to the front desk about the need to clean. This is a good hotel in the heart of Zurich. The location is a 5 minute walk from the main train station. There are frequent trains connecting the Zurich airport to the train station and they are much cheaper than taking a taxi. The hotel is modern looking and well maintained. For a basic hotel, this will do the trick. The location is excellent, a few blocks from the main train station, but one block off of the main roads so you don't hear the traffic at night. The beds were plush and the room nice and clean, but minimal. The only negative was not having internet in the room.

Noise on Saturday night was a bit much until about 4a but wasn't enough to complain(Zurchers party on Saturday nights!). I travel for pleasure a lot. This 50-year old single gal from Upper West Side of Manhattan was just looking for a reasonable and convenient hotel in Zurich for a 4-day Thanksgiving weekend 2011. I was amazed at how convenient this hotel was to everything. I actually timed how long it took me to get from Airport landing, train, Hauptbanhof, walk to hotel, […] and be ready to check in. I couldn't believe how convenient it all was, going and coming. Anything I did, I knew how simple it would be to merely cross the river and be back at the hotel in no time. Usually you DON'T want to stay near a European train station neighborhood, but this is an absolute exception. The "Coop" food store is also nearby. The Swiss National Museum was a quick walk. Going back to the Rail station rear side to join a tram tour of the city was a quick walk. Going shopping the length of Banhofstrasse (often) was, each time, a quick walk to it or home from any one of the sites you'll be wanting to see. Generally, Zurich is just a pedestrian and ultimately manageable city. But I researched finding a very inexpensive hotel for the 3 nights I'd need one over Thanksgiving. Others at this price (and even more) did NOT have private bathroom, did NOT include breakfast, were NOT as close into the places you'd want to be. I also had a personal Nespresso pod coffee maker in my room with two kinds of pod coffee. (Loved it!) Also had an amazing glass-in shower stall (not the typical Euro-style drafty one). People I tell how much I got this hotel for and that I got it on Hotels.com were very impressed. I didn't want or need Internet (for a charge), although I did have my iPad2 with me, but they do supply a keyboard and there's an amazing flat-screen TV in each room cantilevered out from a wall over the desk which can be your monitor. There were the standard International Herald Tribunes each day, planted by the elevators and I was able to catch up on news that way too, along with all the BBC channels on TV. Read more

Location is excellent! Tram system is right round the corner and gets you anywhere. Don't spend the $60 taxi fair to the airport. Take #10 tram for $6 each. So easy. We felt very comfortable here. The main advantage of this hotel is being so close to the main train station and at a reasonable price for Zurich. It is very clean and the room very comfortable but I was not able to sleep all night because of the very noisy trams , buses and trolleys going by every five minutes all night.
