I love love love this hotel. It is always a little nerve-wracking to book a hotel blindly, especially in a country where you don't speak the language. But this was a big big win! It is a quick five minute walk over the river and has plenty of restaurants and nightlife in the area. I know that might be a negative if you're looking for quiet Swiss solitude, […] but despite boisterous bar patrons singing late into the night, I slept fine, and it was fun to be near the action. Zurich's downtown area is compact, so this hotel location isn't exactly exclusive, there are plenty of places that are equally convenient, but this place is recently updated, with stylish looking rooms, even when it is just a single bed. The "Central" transit terminal is right outside, so if you want to venture on the public transit, there are several lines that come through there. The internet is pricy - like most places in Switzerland, but the breakfast is included and is really generous - there is even prosecco!! I mean who DOESN'T want that when on vacation. First, I got a fairly good rate. The hotel is centrally and conveniently located - very close to the Old Town and the Main Train Station. The day time receptionist was very nice, patient and helpful. The breakfast buffet was really a welcome and very good. Will definitely stay there again.

The Hotel Rütli is located a few short feet from Central at the entrance to Old Town. The location is great for exploring, as the nearby tram stop has several lines that cross here. The hotel is also less than a 5 minute walk from the Zurich Hauptbahnhof (main train station), again making this an extremely convenient location in the heart of the city. The […] hotel was renovated in 2010 and the rooms are very nice and modern, with many of the amenities you'd want, including flat screen TVs and private bathrooms. Another nice thing is that the room windows open completely, which is great for when the weather is nice. There is also a free-to-use computer with internet access located in the lobby near the fireplace. The staff was very nice and accommodating. They allowed me to check my bags until my room was ready, and even prepared my room early so I could check in after a red-eye flight from NY. The hotel offers a small continental breakfast each morning with basic foods: breads, meats, cereals & granola, yogurt, etc. Nothing outstanding, but nice nonetheless. There are a few things that I would have to advise other travelers of, however: (1) You will hear guest in other rooms in the hotel, in particular if a chair is moved or a door opened or closed. These noises were frequent and much louder than you may normally expect to hear in a hotel. For me, there were far too many other guests up at all hours, making sleep at times difficult; (2) the heating/cooling unit in the room was either too difficult for me to figure out, or outright broken. I could never get it to work, but thankfully the weather was cool and I was able to regulate the temperature by opening or closing windows. (3) While the location is outstanding, be advised that there is a slightly seedy element at night just a few blocks up the street to the East (away from the Central tram stop). This was a very cute, small, and modern hotel. It is located within walking distance of the main train station and close to restaurants. The staff was nice and helpful. Breakfast was ok. We stayed 3 nights at Hotel Rütli, and it was fantastic! First, the location is great. If you are arriving by train, the hotel is a short walk across Bahnhof Brücke from the main train station, or if you take the #10 tram from the airport, the Central stop is even closer to the hotel. The area in which it is situated, the Niederdorf, is also great. […] It's a younger area with a lot of takeaways, restaurants, bars, and cafes. From the hotel, it's also easy to see the major sights in Zürich. Although it's up the river from the Fraumünster, Großmünster, etc., the main part of Zürich is easily walkable (e.g., it's about a 10 min. walk to the Großmünster from the hotel and 15-20 min. all the way down to the lake). It's also just below the hill on which the ETH and university are located, and between the train station and hotel is a great supermarket for snacks or a cheap meal. In addition to the great location, the hotel itself is great! We had a "City Room," which was decorated by a graffiti artist. The furniture was comfortable and sleek. Our double room had a small sitting area, desk, comfortable bed, and a nice bathroom. We also had breakfast included, which was quite tasty. It was a typical Swiss/German breakfast consisting of yogurt, müsli, breads, croissants, rolls, cheese, meats, soft boiled eggs, etc. Additionally, we found the staff to be very helpful and friendly, as we asked for assistance several times. Although we speak a little German, we found Swiss German difficult to understand, but the staff kindly spoke English when requested. They also helped us call a local restaurant to make a reservation. Finally, the free computer/internet in the lobby is nice -- very convenient to look up info. on where you're going in the city on your way out (and much better than paying the pricey rate in your room if you don't mind not being online all the time). Excellent location, staff courteous and helfpul (all clearly proud of the hotel, which is a very good sign), invigorating breakfast, pleasant decor, nice homely feeling to be back in the evening after a day out in the snow.
