"Very nice for a building with the age and history"
I was impressed with the age and history of the hotel. The stairswas some what of a problem with my wife being handy capped. I wish that the web sight showed more of the lay out so you could under stand what you was getting into. If i was to have known that we was staying on the 3rd floor and only had stairs i would have probely have stayed some place […] else. Unless we could have gotting a room on the 1st floor. bur overall very historic. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Portland, ME visit"
Overall, excellent as usual, but those stairs can be tough on the old knees. Next time we will book a better room on the first floor. As in the past, this hotel is very well run and the staff are some of the very best. Great place to stay and in a great townGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Comfortable and Convenient -Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Due to a cancelled flight, we stayed another night. The rooms were clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. We didn't like the bathroom-down-the-hall arrangement, but the room was relatively inexpensive.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Friendly staff clean rooms"
2nd time staying at this hotel, staff is very friendly and the hotel is very clean and welcoming. Disliked the shared bathrooms and showers were very small, some rooms do have a private bath but not in the rooms. Will be staying againGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Very nice room! Colored towels and great cookies! We came in after 10PM and they put out cookies for us. Nice breakfast and excellent front desk!!! Highly recommended, Wanted to stay their on my return trip but it was booked :( You won't be sorry! Very clean also!!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Comfortable, clean and luxurious accommodations given the price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice, a bit worn, great staff and breakfast"
The hotel is a great deal. I would recommend it if you're on a budget. It's rather European in style, i.e. winding hallways and walkup rooms. The decor is attractive, if worn in some places. Our bathroom was private (accessible via our room key only), but down the hall and a bit tired. The breakfast was great for a continental breakfast. They had soy […] milk! Also, complimentary coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, along with free cookies. Again, a great deal for the price. Half the cost of the hotels down at the waterfront, with a great deal more character than most hotels in the price range. It's quite unique. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cozy on a winter night"
Stayed at the Inn before an early morning flight. Room was clean, cozy and comfortable. Staff is very helpful and polite. No problem with very early wake up call. Parking lot (in town) was plowed and open despite bad weather. Very reasonable cost. All and all, a very good experience.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Everything was great at the Inn at St. John, the hotel staff were always really nice and personable. The only downside I found was the bathrooms were not connected directly to your room. For our room, we had to walk all the way down the hall way to get to our bathroom and make sure we lock it afterwards.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Room and hotel was clean and very cozy. Staff was so nice and enjoyable to talk to. Will definitely find an occasion to stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best hotel in Portland"
They upgraded my room free of charge! the cookies, the free, cold water, the soft bed, the cleanliness. the friendliness. love this place.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Much better than a cookie-cutter chain hotel."
The Inn was beautiful with convenient off-street parking directly behind the building. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The room was very clean, with a comfortable bed. The Inn was close to I-295 and near a lot of attractions, especially the sporting complexes. Only issue is with the stand-up shower in the private hall bathroom, which would be […] quite tight for a larger person. I will definitely stay again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"One night stay"
What a little gem! Would definitely stay there again. Rooms were comfy, the bed was amazingly comfortable. Very clean. Breakfast was self serve with high quality food items. Good coffee.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient and Comfortable"
This older but very well maintained property is a throwback to another era (w/its individual bathrooms separated from the bedroom in the corridor-in some cases). Comfortable and well worth the value of its costs...Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Charming hotel and very reasonably priced."
This was recommended by a real estate broker who said many of his clients had enjoyed it. Not within walking distance to great restaurants or shops, but charming and very reasonably priced. I would easily stay there again. No elevator, but someone helped me with my bag.Genuine Expedia guest review
I loved this inn! It is charming. The service is excellent, the rooms very clean and comfortable. I would definitely stay there again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"many things to see in Portland"
The room was very homey , comfortable, and peaceful. Loved it. Would definately stay there again. The folks who work there were helpful and friendly. Very clean. Loved it there.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"victorian and quaint inn"
The facility is beautiful, clean, tastefully decorated and homey, I had a private in room bathroom , would not have liked it as much if the bathroom was in the hall way which is the case with many of the rooms. The rooms were different from one another which added to the Victorian charm. Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The continental breakfast […] was super. Only draw back for me was the hardness of the bed but over all very happy with my stay. I will return again and again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A lovely and interesting place!"
I only stayed for one night, because I had something to do early the next morning in Portland. I initially picked this room because it was the most affordable for a one night stay, but I was really happy with my choice! We arrived pretty late in the evening, but the staff was very pleasant and accommodating. The interior of the hotel has a very beautiful […] and interesting Victorian style decor which I enjoyed very much and continued into the rooms. Our room was very comfortable, had free wifi, a TV with local cable channels, and a detached bathroom which only we could access. I'm not sure if all the rooms had sinks and mirrors in them, but ours did which was super helpful for getting ready in the morning! They have coffee and tea around the clock, which was nice too, and in the morning there was an array of fruits, juices, and breakfast pastries. I really liked staying here, and wish I could've stayed for more than just one day. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
This was a beautiful hotel. The staff was very nice. Not to much to do in walking distance however.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Please change bathroom products!"
For the price, the hotel is fine for couple nights. But they must, they have to change the bathroom products!!!! I regretted using the shampoo and especially the conditioner the moment it touched my head. The mop that i had to endure on top of my head for the day before we finally got home and I could wash it off was unbearable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"good for quick stay"
Nice little hotel. room was small but only needed a place to sleep. Price was rightGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Nice indoor pictures of the rooms do not make up for the seedy neighborhood, sorry I made the reservations with expedia which I could not cancel. I recommend you stay at the West End Inn.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Different and cute"
Fit the bill for me to get to an early flight. No problem getting a cab at 4:45 AM. I had never stayed in a place sharing a bath. I found that it was no problem at all. The inn has a lot of personality with its narrow halls and stairway. it felt like staying in another country. I enjoyed visiting 'Old Port' which was not too far of a walk. I loved the […] cobble stone, narrow streets and cute shops and eateries. However, i would not walk back after dark. i would take a cab. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very pleased with Inn at St. John"
We were very pleased with the Inn at St. John and would stay there again if in Portland. It has personality, and is a good price performer. Our room had a private hall bath, and that was not a problem at all. The Inn is a good bargain in my opinion. The staff recommended a great restaurant a few doors down, which we really enjoyed, too, and it was great […] not to have to get back into the car to go for dinner. It reminds me of a European inn. "Cute stay not to far from downtown Portland"
Stayed here a couple nights as we explored Portland. A nice, cozy atmosphere. Lots of stairs though if you aren't on the first floor, no elevators. This is a renovated apartment complex and some rooms have shared bathrooms. Parking can be difficult at night due to their small lot, some have to parking in an adjacent restaurant lot. Breakfast room is […] very tiny so plan on bumping elbows when grabbing a morning muffin. We did enjoy it and we would stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Let's go somewhere else in Portland!"
Very peripheral to Portaland in every sense and old and stale interior - needs a major facelift. The steep stairs to the bedrooms are only for those who can run a mile and the breakfast location is so limited in space and content that they need to remove it and lower the cost of the overnite stay. The management are indifferent and don't offer much in […] the way of service and seem to just enjoy each other's company at the front desk WEIRD? Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good price, nicely decorated room"
Nicely decorated room. I got a good price, bathroom in my room was shared. The bed was too short for me: I'm 1.85m/6'2 feet tall but my feet hung out of the bed. But conisdering the low price it was ok.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel in Portland Maine"
We stayed only one night. As we did our reservation through Expedia and got confirmation , we drove to the hotel. To our surprise ,it seems that the room was not free. The clerk fount us another room which was more expensive But didn't charge us. This was very nice.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Superb value for the price with charm and great st"
Portland, ME during peak August is expensive. However, we enjoyed all the fun at an affordable rate with a minor inconvenience of a few blocks further from the center of town. Instead of a less-than-pleasant motel with this affordable rate, we enjoyed a historic inn with character, continental breakfast, and accommodating staff. Actually, the neighborhood […] (Arts district) closer to this inn than downtown is more trendy and local. I will return to Inn St.John again and again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very cool and quaint"
Absolutely loved this little Victorian hotel. Reminded me of San Francisco boutique hotels. Kind of strange with shared bath but not bad at all. Great little restaurant/pub right next door with excellent food! Quite the surprise!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Right in Town a little bizarre."
The staff was very nice. The place was laid out a little weird for me. I don't know what I expected but this wasn't it. The bed was not very comfortable. the room was really small. The breakfast was good. The bathroom at little old and rundown looking. I don't think I would stay there again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Perfect little B&B in central Portland Maine"
I was pleasantly surprised with the charm of the Inn at St. John. A rainy night, a long day's travel, a quick stop in Portland before driving up the coast. It was quiet, civilized, within walking distance to some delicious restaurants, clean and nice. And what a great price! If you want the oceanfront, it's not for you. But if you don't mind driving […] to the Old Port and saving money on your room for a nice dinner, stay at the Inn. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"very conveniet to I-295 and near downtown"
Hotel personnel were very accomodating and friendly. The continental breakfast was quite adequate and a bit better than the chain hotels, The hotel itself is old but the room was clean, modernized and had a refrigerator/freezer that actually worked. Bathrobes and extra towels were provided.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good price for short overnight"
I needed a short night stsy to catch 6:00am flight. It was very good for that purpose. Good restaurants in the area.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Quality of Service"
This hotel has a high quality of service that so many lack these days. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Even though the breakfast was only continental, the items were so much better quality than the standard powdered donuts and cheap coffee you get elsewhere. The hotel is charming, but there are a few things to note. First off, it's […] really not within walking distance to the old port area, so expect to drive. There is limited parking in the main lot, but they do have overflow parking. It's all free, so that is a plus. The bathroom being separated from the bedroom was really no problem, but I can see this causing issues for some guests. Other than that, you can't be it for the value. The hotel is so adorable! The lobby was appropriately decorated as was the room! The staff was friendly, the room was clean. The parking behind the building was full but overflow parking was easy to get to. But the room was very small, the bed was a bit tiny (double) and a little uncomfortable and we had to share a bathroom with another room (the rooms […] are private but the bathrooms are in the hallway). The hallways were long and winding and there was no elevator. But overall, the experience was worth it and we loved the place! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Perfect for what I needed"
Needed a reasonably-priced place to stay and didn't need much other than a place to rest my head and take a shower. Shared bath which was fine for a night. Nice place, nice people. No-brainer vs something 3x the price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Friendly small business"
Had a very nice stay, great to find a place that allows pets. Pros: Everyone was friendly to us and our dog, even when we checked in very late (and have a large dog!). We had a shared bathroom which was very clean and well maintained. On-site parking. Good general location near a large dog park and not far from touristy areas of Portland. Reasonable […] rates. Cons: Older building meant small rooms and weird carpeting. Breakfast was limited. Near a bus station with some homeless people roving around late night. Overall: good place for price, def family/pet friendly location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"wonderful place a bit outside of old port"
wonderful place! Delicious breakfast, coffee, tea in the lobby at all times. the hotel is not in the center of town( Old Port) , but a 5 minute drive or a 20 minute walk- which is perfect to get to see some wonderful restaurants near by and stay out of the super touristy area. highly recommend it. wonderful place.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Historic and good value"
Don't expect a standard hotel. It's about 100 years old, but the building has so much character. If you aren't sure about a room with a bathroom across the hall, spend extra to upgrade. We upgraded to a room with an en suite after the first night, and it worked better for us personally. We would stay here again.Genuine Expedia guest review
Friendly and accommodating staff. We had a great stay at this clean and comfortable Inn! Cookies upon arrival. We had a third floor room and the staff helped us with bags. At first glance it reminded us of Fawlty towers. But with way better service. We were impressed that they would even offer gluten free alternatives. We crawled in our comfortable […] bed and watched Fawlty towers on Netflix. Did I mention the wifi worked too? Would stay here again in a heartbeat! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
