We loved the hotel! We were in Amsterdam for a conference, but stayed a week after for vacation. Lloyd's is not in the city centre, but it's a 5-minute trip on the tram to the Central Station. We had a great time at the Lloyd. The bed was very comfortable & the room was spacious (though we did see a number of _very_ tiny chambers while walking down the hall). One surprise: while our room did have a toilet, sink & shower, there was only a screen separating these amenities from the bed area. Happily, there was a hall toilet we could use for […] serious business. We were on a honeymoon, but not quite ready for _that_ level of intimacy... The thing to remember is that the Lloyd Hotel has a distinctive history and is run as a kind of cultural exhibition space. The lounges are "far-out" and the whole place is bursting with creativity. An entire stairwell is dedicated to the building's unique heritage. Also, the location is very convenient: tram 26 goes right to/from the Central Train Station, while tram 10 runs around the perimeter of the canals & straight to the Museum District. The hotel cafe was pricy, but we made use of a nearby grocery store for basic breakfast items. We paid for "two-star comfort" and definitely receive a great value. Guests wanting a more conventional hotel experience might want to pay for "three-star" or up. Read more

It was an old jail that has been refurbished in a quirky, trendy way. Really interesting space. The service is not the best at reception but it didnt really affect our stay. Area is nice with three or four good cafe bars and tram is really close and one stop to Central Station.

I think the Lloyd is a gem. The rates are reasonable because it is a bit outside Centrum. Tram 26 stops at the hotel's backdoor and arrives at Centraal Station five minutes later, so it never feels like you are remote from the city center. The staff was friendly and patient (even when we must have unintentionally tried that patience). Right outside […] the front door are two grocery stores, a few drugstores, and several bakeries, but the noise and commotion of Centrum are just distant enough for comfort. Take the time to explore the magazines, photos and knickknacks in the hallways and common areas. You'll learn a lot about the history of the hotel (first an immigration center, then a jail, then an artists commune) and amsterdam itself. Worth staying in to see the innovative modular architecture created for each room.

This was by far the worst hotel I've ever stayed in! And I've stayed in hotels, budget and expensive, all over the world. The receptionist (a young man) made us wait for hours for our room even though there was no need for this and we had bags and dogs and were exhausted and he was very, very rude. The room itself was so bad it was funny! It had no […] window - so just like a prison - and the bathtub was right in the center of the room, so no privacy from whoever you are sharing the room with, and the whole bathroom itself was a nasty orange monstrosity, sort of like a porta-potty, right in the center of the room. This is a hotel with many surprises. My husband and I were completely charmed, but it might put off travelers who don't like the unexpected. Our only real complaint was that our room was near the elevators on the main floor, and we could hear a lot of noise (people talking) as a result.

We booked this hotel for 4 people in adjoining rooms at short notice. We were impressed that such a nice looking hotel (based on the pictures online) had enough space for all of us however when we arrived we were disappointed. An hour after check-in (at around 4pm) and our room was still not set up to accommodate the 4 of us. There was a misleading […] bowl of fruit left out to welcome a guest that was not staying in our room, we were not offered any fruit despite being told the "something" would be done to make up for the lack of beds. After asking repeatedly when the room would be ready and getting no answers we were left to explore the town until later that night and hope when we returned that the room was finally set up. Luckily it was but further disappointment in the quality of the single beds, they were unsatisfactory (they looked like fold-away IKEA beds) flimsy mattresses with matching flimsy duvet. That said there was some positives the room was clean and quiet also the location of the hotel was very useful for transport and restaurants. Read more

This is a comfortable hotel but not for everyone. As previous reviewers have said the star ratings are the hotel's own and do not adhere to conventional star rating requirements. But there are many pluses and I would certainly stay here again. The hotel is a couple of tram stops from central station or a short cycle ride. I was a bit nonplussed at first by the swing and very large bath in the middle of our 5* room and the absence of typical 5* expectations such as a hair dryer (you can ask for one) and tea/coffee in the room (there is coffee and tea available in the corridor). The absence of good lighting to put makeup on or even to read was frustrating but the downsides would not stop me from staying here again, although I would probably book a 4* or 3* room in future. The hotel tries hard to be different – which makes it worth a stay, even if some aspects border on the ridiculous. Great brick architecture from the 1920s in the former docks district. It served different purposes, and was for some decades used as a prison. The main staircase alone is extremely steep and has landings only on even floors. I had a 2-star […] room on the fourth floor. It was a long, narrow rectangle (just wide enough to squeeze past the bed), with a pillar in the middle, painted in stark white, a dark red plastic floor, a small wooden table with three chairs, plus a dozen or so bright green (plus one bright red) boxes fixed to one wall that are probably intended to remind the guest of various transit situations. Shower head and washbasin on the opposite wall, without any separation, and a mop to clean up. Comfortable bed. The restaurant on the ground floor also serves breakfast (quite expensive buffet or à la carte if you don't eat much). The restaurant opens to an open space all the way up to the fourth floor, with sofas, playing corners, a library, and a room for art exhibitions on different levels. Overall, I recommend the hotel: the experience is refreshingly different from the ordinary hotel chains, but you may find that you don't like it. Read more

The only mirror in the whole room was a small one over the sink, quite high up and I'm only medium height so that wasn't ideal. I asked for one that I could actually use, and that never materialized. The shower over the bath didn't work. This was a three star room, so I had expected a bit more. I also heard another unhappy guest being told 'I'm sorry that this has not been up to your expectations' with in the lobby the second day I was there, so maybe they are still ironing things out with this hotel. It was nearly a really good stay, and I'd like to recommend it, but not until the substance as well as the style is sorted would I do so - concept great, but execution needs more attention to the boring side of hotel management, like clean rooms, functional appliances, and efficient service. We had mixed feelings about this hotel; after staying in a non-descript chain hotel in Brussesl, this one was refreshing in its character and charm. We had pushed the boat out and booked a 5 star room (the hotel's own rating). The receptionist told us what a lovely room we had, so we were a little disappointed with it. Whilst it was certainly striking in its design, it didn't have some of the facilities you might expect. The lack of air conditioning was an issue; it was uncomfortably hot at night. The room was a very high-ceilinged one in which a mezzanine had been created, housing an enormous bed which could sleep up to seven. The lower level had piano in it, which might be a selling point for some people, but not if you have young children who enjoy playing Chopsticks ad nauseum, and a long table and chairs, which were not that useful either. We felt it would have been better to use the lower level, where it was cooler, for the sleeping area. The shower and toilet, whilst clean, were not the most pracitcal either and there was no fridge. I spent four nights in a two star room in August 2012. I can't recommend it enough. The staff were friendly, the room was clean and it's in a very nice area - quite trendy. It's a good 25 minute walk from central Amsterdam but there is a tram line and a train station very close by. If you walk into Amsterdam, you can walk along the North Sea Canal (I […] think?) which is very pleasant on a sunny day. There are a couple of bars that serve food, a shopping parade and two supermarkets all within a two minute walk. There is also an excellent bar/restaurant within the hotel. You can rent a bicycle from reception and they can also arrange tickets to various attractions. If I return to Amsterdam I won't hesitate to stay at the Lloyd Hotel again. Read more

If your room is close to the street and you're a light sleeper, make sure to close the windows and vents when going to sleep, as it can get quite noisy late at night, with motorbikes and people. However, being able to sleep was the big problem. Our room was at the side facing the tram station and a busy roadway. We didn't have air-conditioning so we had to open the windows but that was very noisy. My children's beds were near the hall door so they had to contend with noises outside their door. It wasn't continually noisy in the hallway but enough to delay my daughter getting to sleep by about 2 hours every night. The traffic noises on our side of the room blocked out hall noise for us. We had come from a hotel in another country and we were very well rested when we arrived. However we all left here feeling very tired. Read more

The Lloyd is a former prison and still feels a little prison like as you walk along the narrow corridors. Photographs and documents from its dark past adorn the walls of the stairway. Our room was a 3 star triple, very spacious and was in fact 2 rooms a single and a twin with a huge en-suite bathroom. The beds pillows and quilts are incredibly soft […] and comfy. Splendid location in a wonderful city. We chose a 2* room which was everything we needed. Comfortable bed with TV. Plenty of storage. We didn't mind but the shower and sink is in the same room so its a giant wetroom. Toilet is seperate though. Very close to amenities and a 5 minute tram ride to Centraal Station.

You definitely need to off load the luggage before parking at this hotel as the car park is behind the hotel, but it is separate and needs to be accessed by a flight of metal stairs, which our dog refused to climb. On the positive it is really easy to access the city from this hotel. The tram runs just behind the hotel and takes you to the central station in 5 mins. So overall a very interesting hotel, but probably best suited for people travelling light or arriving on public transport. Read more
