We stayed at this hotel during a long European trip. Out of the 7 hotels we stayed in, this was by far the best! Enjoyed our 2nd stay in oct 2012. We love the area and hope to visit again next year. Hotel would improve greatly with carpets being replaced in bedrooms. Bar prices are far to expensive and need to be brought down in order to attract hotel guests to stay in at night.

The hotel is definitely 4 star quality with many amenities over and above the norm. The staff were all extremely professional and friendly with nothing being too much trouble. The reception staff were willing to arrange restaurant bookings and taxis where required. Everyone spoke good English, so no communication problems. We booked at the Baia Grande hotel as it was medium ranged price and four star! We have travelled Portugal and stayed at various hotels with the same rating and similar pricing and been very happy with our choice. What a shock when we arrived and were shown to our rooms, the worst rooms in the hotel, tired, smelly and very minimalist. We enquired why […] our safe in the room was not working, only to be told that it cost 2 Euro per day to hire the safe, but that if we did not use it, the hotel were not responsible for missing items. Never before have we ever had to pay for the use of a safe!!! Our room overlooked an empty rubbish dump filled with garbage bags. The staff were not at all accommodating and told us that as we had booked those rooms we had to stay there. If we needed to call a cab a charge by the hotel was charged. We were a party of 4 and requested a table together for breakfast, which we were told we had to pay for to have the table secured. We were so upset and used the hotel only to sleep and never made use of the facilities. The pool furniture was broken! Hotel staff were very surely and were not knowledgeable on the area. Our room had the most horrible smell coming from the bathroom drain and although we asked for something to be done about it, nothing was and no compensation was offered. They […] wanted to charge for everything- the use of the safe, taking your breakfast onto the patio cost you eight euros, if you asked them to call a cab for you, there was a charge and so it went on. The towels were tiny and the bathmat was the size of a facecloth, the beds were hard as rocks and you could feel the springs in the mattress. The pool needed to be overhauled, it was old and tired and the lounge chairs were falling apart. The breakfasts were terrible and not worth the extra cost of the breakfast included package. The hotel was very nice and most of the staff are friendly and helpful but watch out for Fatima on reception desk. The nearest beach is gale beach which is five minutes away from the hotel and you can take a shuttle bus from the hotel to the hotel. We tried walking to the beach behind the hotel (Coel beach) and was attacked by three dogs. I am still suffering from the shock. The signs were not clear from the hotel to the beach. I most say there are dogs everywhere, most of the dogs are friendly but I would avoid walking to the beach if you can. If you do go to the old town please avoid going into Zanzi restaurant as the customer service is very poor. The evening entertainment is geared up for adults so families may find it difficult to keep their children entertained but there are nearby facilities such as zoos and couples as the region is quite hilly and some may find getting about on foot a little more effort then they may have bargained for. However scooters, cycles and cars can be readily available at a cost if it required through the hotel. For an upmarket experience a trip to Villamoura is only a about 40 minutes away by car. Hotel Baia Grande, about 40 mins by car from airport. Simple to find if you have a sat nav. Warm reception, very quick. Beautiful spacious room with HUGE bed, sat tv and all the usuals you would expect from a 4star hotel. Lovely breakfast with FRESH orange juice, not keen on the coffee though. It is a 15 minute walk to the beach but well worth it. Little coves where you can be pracrically alone. White sand, and the tempreture in the last week in November was 70 degrees. Not suitable if you don't have a car, or if you are not fit. I ddin't like the horrible dogs barking and growling in the general area but hey! thats just me. Fantastic hotel with really friendly and hard working staff. Although we had 2 mini storms whilst there with horrendous winds, there was no evidence by the time we awoke. Breakfast was plentiful, fresh and with a huge variety to appease even the fussiest eater. The free shuttle bus was excellent with lovely drivers and allowed us the freedom to go into town in the evening and stay however long we wanted before getting a very reasonable taxi back. There is a beautiful bay within walking distance and was very reminiscent of a small Cornish cove. Quite a sun trap with toilets and a cafe. There are 2 cafes, a shop and 2 restaurants within easy walking distance if you want a change from going into Albufeira to eat. There are more in the peak holiday times. All the hotel staff were smiley and helpful. We had an early morning flight home and were offered complimentary packed lunches because we missed breakfast. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants an Albufeira holiday without the noise and bustle of the town. Water is expensive at €3.50 a bottle for 1l. Shops in the town much better value. If you want to relax by the pool in fabulous weather and read a book then this is perfect. The Hotel Baia Grande is ideal for those who are looking for a nice quiet peaceful break away from the busy resort of Albufeira. For those wanting to get to the resort there is a useful free shuttle 4 times daily to the Old Town, half of which go via the marina, great if you want to catch a boat trip. The room itself was clean, fairly roomy and well maintained. We needed to keep the air-con on overnight, thankfully it was fairly quiet. Disappointed with the size of the balcony - only room for the table and one chair provided. The air-con exhaust was on the balcony - not the best of positions. Breakfast and Dinners at the hotel provided plenty of choice and were of reasonable quality and were on the whole value for money. Drinks bought in the hotel were as expected - expensive. There are one or two restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, we tried Dom Dimiz on our last night and had a great meal. Facilities at the hotel were good, though the indoor bubble pool is in need of some TLC. Hotel staff were great - very helpful, most spoke good English and v. friendly. We enjoyed our stay at the Baia Grande. The staff were efficient and pleasant and the breakfast was really good. The pool area could do with a bit of sprucing up but there were lots of loungers, plenty of room and the bar area was pleasant. Our room was good and the view from our balcony was really impressive. The location wasn't great and wouldn't […] suit anyone with mobility problems. The walk to the nearest beach was long and hilly and there were not many shops/cafes etc in the immediate vicionity. The bus services from the hotel to the Gali beach and into Albufeira were good- although one later one back from Albufeira would have been better (last one 7pm). Another good idea would be for the hotel to provide amap of the local area as towards the end of our week we discovered that if we turned left onto the main road at the top of our road it would take us to a small resort with a selection of bars and restaurants (about 10 min walk). It had looked like there was nothing along that road beyond the snackbar. We would recommend although not for anyone who didn't enjoy walking. Read more

This was a lovely holiday for myself, husband and our 3 year old. We went in September so it was quieter than if during school holidays. We were bed and breakfast. The breakfast was ok, a bit of everything. The hotel was a shuttle bus away from the beach and Albuferia central. In the evenings the last shuttle to Albuferia is about 7pm and there isnt […] one back so you have to get a taxi back to the hotel which is cheap enough. It was nice spending afternoons or evenings walking along the lanes by the hotel to find restaurants to try and supermarkets to get snacks. Two supermarkets nearby - one about half an hour walk, the other about 45 minutes (when you learn the shortcuts), a lot cheaper than spending money on drinks at hotel as these were a bit of a rip off. This hotel is set far enough onto the countryside to be away from the noise and hustle of the town of Albufeira, but only a cheap taxi ride from the old town taxi rank. However, we were really disappointed and will not be returning. We were given room 221 which backs onto the bar area (which is in the centre of the hotel) and as there was live music on every night, we could hear […] nothing else until it finished at around 23:30. We requested to be moved but were told they were fully booked and no other rooms were available and no apology or alternative was offered. A very heavy squeaky door is also next to the room and if that wasn't left open, you heard it all night. We had a land view room, which meant we had a lovely view of the staff car park. The A/C unit is on the minuscule balcony and you got blasted with hot air if you did want to sit out there. The bed on first view looks enormous but is just two singles pushed together and as they aren't connected, a gap keeps appearing between them. Cleanliness is a little poor with hairs being found around the room (not ours!), dirty marks on the surfaces and they obviously don't clean under the bed or mat! The hotel looks good on first view but once you dig under the surface, it's sub standard (as is the breakfast). Overall, we were really looking forward to our stay and were more than happy that it was out of the way as we wanted a week of peace and quiet but this isn't what we got Read more

The hotel put on daily shuttles which could have been better a bit later, however it did mean we only needed one taxiback daily which was only about €6.
