"Good Locaton, Good Price"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 6, 2012
The hotel was adequate and the location convenient for the event I attended. The price was reasonable. I appreciated the free continental breakfast. The breakfast room--an interior room without windows--is small and was crowded both days I was there. Alternate seating is in the more pleasant lobby with windows! Also at this Best Western, unlike at other BWs where I've stayed, the towels noticeably scratchy, not soft, are either old or require different laundering.
"Good food around the hotel"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 5, 2012
They were very friendly and close to everthing, walked all weekend, loved it
"The Best Hotel on Ocean Beach"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 5, 2012
This might be the nicest hotel based right on the ocean at Ocean Beach. The staff was very helpful, the room immaculate, and the location second to none. I've stayed at a number of hotels in the area, but I won't stay anywhere but here in the future. You can't go wrong with an ocean front suite!

San Diego’s waterfront airport lies northwest of downtown, which is home to the San Diego Convention Center, PetCo Park stadium, and the Gaslamp Quarter’s. That historic neighborhood’s restaurants and bars are the hub of the city’s nightlife. Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo form a green swath in this urban jungle. Great location to Gaslamp Quarter and baseball stadium. Great restaurants all over the place.
"Walking distance to everything"
The hotel staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They gave us nice recommendations and were very sociable. The location is excellent! I am nine months pregnant and could still walk to nice restaurants, the movie theater, nail salon and Ghiradelli:) The valet parking was a bit pricey but it's a city so it is to be expected. But overall, the staff, […] location and rooms were top notch. The only down side was that it didn't have a jacuzzi but the pool is heated so it made up for it. Read more
"In the heart of the gaslamp district"
The locale is perfect. Park your car and walk wherever you need to go. Within walking distance... Hard rock hotel, lol subway, d I c k s (great rude bar type place to eat). Great resturants. There was a toga gathering going on across the street ( random but fun). The hotel itself was nice and you CANNOT tell it's pet friendly ~it's sooo clean and upscale. […] The staff very efficient and extremely nice. Parking is $40 but you can go in and out. Cheaper parking located just across the street with no in and out but like I said everything is within walking distance sooo just park across the street. Free gaslamp pizza deliver late night and early morning for all hotels in gaslamp district which is cool. bed was a little too firm but hey... Oh yeah and they have a nice selection from their honor bar. Ps this is a no smoking hotel. Read more
"Wonderful stay in the heart of the Gaslamp Distric"
We love Kimpton hotels!
"Gas Lamp district - walk to area attractions"
Loved the property - though I was there on business, I wished I had my family with me. The welcome VIP chalk board with the names of the...pets!...at the entrance to the hotel set the charming mood right away. Toys behind the counter for the 2-legged children and the funny goldfish are sure to be hits with kids. Rooms are beautiful, very well appointed, […] though as a business traveler, I found it very odd that the one thing the rooms don't have is a coffee maker. While the coffee service in the lobby is nice, it doesn't start until 6am, and I'm sure the rest of the world would rather be spared from my roll out of bed and stumble to coffee self. Loved the wine and cheese evenings! Read more
"Fabulous service in San Diego"
was there on business and the staff were great, really friendly and helpful. I like the happy hour and as I checked in too late on arrival was given a voucher for a glass of wine . Good rooftop bar to escape the bustle of Gas Lamp. would highly recommend for business or pleasure.
"Very Stylish, but not too Functional."
The hotel is in almost every sense, a 5 Star Hotel. However, the rooms look very cool, but they are very impractical. Small closet, almost ZERO drawer space. No place to have room service. Feels crowded even for one person -- sort of European sized. Trendy looking sink, but splashes water everywhere -- get the idea? Also, room service 'dinner' menu […] ends at 9 PM!? Staff is friendly and well trained, rooms are very clean. There is a very hip bar by the pool on the 4th floor. Saturday night jammed with beautiful 30 somethings that are affluent enough to pay $15 per drink. Wonderful location. A great place to stay alone for 2 or 3 days, but impossible to live in. Read more
Thanks for your review...we have taken note of all of your comments. We do offer 24 hour room service, even though, as you pointed out the dinner menu ends at 9pm. Our guest rooms are on average 400 square feet, which is actually pretty spacious by most hotel standards, however, we also offer larger guest rooms such as our King Spa rooms and suites, for guests who prefer more space. Hope you come back and see us again soon..

everyone who worked at hotel went that extra bit to make make sure we were happy and felt welcomed. jsix chef talked to us to make sure meal he was about to prepare would satisfy our palettes and meet our vegan needs. a great stay.

"Great customer care"
excellent, i was there on business it is my 3rd stay. they go just a step further with service and it makes a real difference. I had jet lag and was up at 4am and having established that the 24 hour subway couldn;t do coffee until 6 am I asked at the hotel who swiftly made me a pot of coffee free of charge - very welcoming and would definately go b […] ack. "Wonderful Pool Bar"
The bed linens and mattresses could use an upgrade for this to become an amazing experience. I really liked how friendly the front desk and house keeping staff were. This place has a great pool bar that is quiet and sunny during the day and hoping on friday and saturday nights. The full snack selection in the room and the refrigerator loaded with a […] variety of drinks was the best i have come across and the pricing for these goodies were fairly reasonable. 1 response by Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton Hotel"Friendly but too friendly on the pet policies"
The staff was very friendly and the location was great; however we were kept up by a dog barking in the room next to us while the owners were out one night. I wish I had researched more into the pet policy before coming to this hotel since we are not really animal people. The room was fairly clean but the bathroom smelled musty.
Hotel management response: Thanks for taking the time to write your review..we are indeed a pet friendly hotel, however, we also only allow pets on certain floors of the hotel and have guest floors that are completely pet free. If you ever stay with us again, be sure to request a pet free floor.
1 response by Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton HotelOnly thing that was disappointing was the amount for valet parking.
"Great"

"Solamar, Kimpton Hotel"
This was a great hotel - the room was fantastic & the service was great as well. The location was perfect - we walked downtown & to the baseball stadium! "Hotel Solamar"
My husband surprised me with a weekend away and we stayed at the Solamar and it was perfect. There was a wide variety of people staying there and the dog-friendly thing is no joke but I don't care I like dogs (even though I don't travel with mine). The 5pm wine hour was a nice touch and I was surprised to find my wine was really tasty- I had the Merlot. […] Don't recall the brand though. My only critique was one I read here on the site- they charge $40/day for parking. Really? Really? We parked across the street for $25/day. We weren't allowed in/our privileges but we had no intention of driving anyways so that saved us $30. They should at least not be more expensive than the closest lot. Other than that it was obviously perfect for us- we would definitely stay there again and recommend it to others. Read more

"Nice hotel no complaints at all."
Very nice hotel. Not really for kids, but that's great for me. The pool bar closes too early I think, and the room service menu could stand to be expanded. I would go there again. It will probably be my regular in San Diego.
"Hotel Solamar--we loved it"
The place was great complete with comfy bed, wine at 5, coffee and tea in the morning, helpful staff and hoola hoops and yoga mats and blocks for working out the core! We had a great time. While the valet parking was $40 bucks a day, it was secure/safe and the boys were cute and helpful. No complaints about the hotel at all. The weather in southern […] california let us down though as it was chilly and rainy so no visits were made to the incredible looking pool. Maybe next time. Read more

This is a nice hotel and worth a one time stay if you are looking to please your extravagant senses, I ? the room rates tho. Staying within the city limits, you got to ask yourself, is it worth it. Nothing special here.

"Great time great location"
Everything was wonderful about my stay at hotel Solamar. Only one minor complaint. The hotel only offers valet parking at $40 a night, and the valet service is not that great. Not enough to stop me from staying there again though!
Thanks for the review, we are so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us.. The parking rate is comparable to other hotels in the Downtown area and is on-site in covered and secured accommodations; something that not all properties can offer. Come back and see us again soon!

"Great hotel in a fun city"
Everything about this hotel is first rate--except for the fitness room. This was a cramped facility with 2 tread mills, 2 ellipticals, and 2 stationary bikes plus a collection of dumbbells.
"Really good but not whats advertised"
This place is beautiful and the wine at 5pm was a nice touch. The only thing was that the bath was not at all what the picture showed and it didn't have the iPod doc and video game console like the description said. Plus the $40 for parking is ridiculous. But overall it was still a nice stay and covenant to everything in downtown.
Thanks for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay with us. We are researching the information you read regarding the Ipod docking stations and video gaming consoles. We currently do not have either of those in our rooms, although the Ipod docking stations will be arriving shortly! We appreciate your feedback and hope you will consider us for a future stay in San Diego.

"Amazing Hotel"
I booked a room @ Hotel Solamar and was very impressed! Pictures on Hotels.com matched this Hotel perfectly! Our room was over looking the amazing pool, while staying in a great location to the Gaslamp District!!!!
"Excellent Stay"
Everything about this hotel was excellent. The only thing we did not prefer is the parking was on the expensive side. So we just parked down the street. The staff was excellent, the happy hour was excellent, and the room was by far one of the most clean and clean smelling rooms I have ever been in. We were not able to go to the pool deck or restaraunt, […] but we had our view from our room overlooking the pool deck and others in our group who were able to go check it out said it was fabulous too. My wife and I were very happy with this hotel. The service was great, and even though it is a pet friendly hotel, it doesn't smell like it is! The rooms were clean and the beds were super comfortable. I even woke up once and thought I was at home! I would definitely recommend this place and will come back here again!

I usually stay at name brand hotels. This one might and should be a well known hotel because everything about it exceeded my expectations. I love the location. Right next to the gaslamp district. I loved the decorations and how clean it was. I will stay here again.

1 response by Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton Hotel"Awesome dog friendly hotel!"
My husband and I had a great one night stay at Hotel Solomar, on a spontaneous drive down to San Diego. They made us and our dog Isa very welcome, no pet fee which is a pleasant rarity, pool bar on the roof. Perfect for a quick trip away from it all. The hotel is in the heart of the Gaslamp District, walkable to everything, and minutes from Petco Park. […] Awesome decor and ambiance, we will definitely stay again. Our only "compaints" were the unavoidable valet fee that seems standard in this area, and the pool bar not open as late as advertised. Tivoli Bar opposite the hotel however is open until 2am for late night drinks and delicious tacos. Read more

We stayed one week over the Christmas holiday. We travel with our Boston Terrier who was also made to feel extremely welcome by all of the staff. Bo, the night front desk associate was absolutely wonderful. So friendly and helpful.

Beautiful hotel with large, comfy rooms and great location - walkable to lots of great restaurants, bars, museums, etc. Food at the hotel restaurant was good and reasonably priced. 1 response by Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton Hotel"Great location but a bit noisy"
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. My two complaints would not keep me from staying there again. Despite being on the 7th floor, I found the noise from the poolside bar to be distracting at night. Thank you for your review! We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. We are sorry to hear that the noise from the poolside bar disturbed your rest, it is possible that we were hosting an event that evening. Was surprised by the $40 a night parking fee....room wasn't ready until well after 3:00 ...remodeling and entire hotel smelled of paint...except for the room. Bathroom sink was ridiculous - brushing teeth or washing face made entire vanity area soaked ...lighting in bathroom was horrible! "Hotel Solamar in San Diego"
The roof top pool was really warm--important when the air temp is in the 60o's. Loved the Wine and Appetizers every week night from 5:00-6:00. Enjoyed the J Six Restaurant--good food. Great location in the GasLamp District. Close to public transportation. We rented bikes across the street at Bicycle Revolution and took them on the ferry over to Coronado […] Island. This is the way to see the island. When you arrive on the ferry, you are about 1 1/2 miles from the "downtown" area of the island, so it really helped to have the bikes to get there easily. The Hotel Solamar is in the heart of the Gaslamp District and two blocks from the Convention Center. The top two floors are reserved for people who do not have pets in this pet-friendly hotel. Our top floor room had a jacuzzi and was very large and comfortable.
