I had to be in San Diego for work, and I booked the Hotel Solamar at the last minute. I am so happy that I did. The hotel staff was so attentive and helpful. "Nice hotel, but not worth the price."
I stayed at Hotel Solamar for 3 days. It is a nice boutique hotel in a fantastic neighborhood with several nice offerings, but also some drawbacks that I felt made it not worth the price. This is one of those fancy hotels that charges a lot and then nickels and dimes you for every little thing. They host a coffee bar in the lobby each morning and a […] happy hour bar each night. Awesome! But there is no coffee maker in your hotel room, and it literally costs $17 for a small pot of coffee to be delivered by room service, with all taxes and fees. (Yikes!) Being in the Gaslamp Quarter, parking is not always easy to find. The hotel charges $40/ day for valet parking (Really?!) Their room service was adequate, perhaps a bit slow. This hotel is very pet friendly, which is great, until the entire floor you're staying on smells like poo and the stains from 3 days ago are still evident on the carpet. If you stay here, make sure you get a fantastic rate! It is nice, but you could probably stay somewhere comparable for less. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

the stay was ok. they gave me a hotel room with a heavy construction view. room was not cleaned properly: dirty glasses left, water after melted ice left, towels left, etc. great location but stay was mediocre.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Wish we would have ahd more time to enjoy all the amenities. Only thing lacking was an in room coffee maker. Hard to do without when you have a 4 AM wake up call.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice hotel in a prime location."
The staff is what makes this hotel worth staying at versus others. This includes the professional and courteous Valet Manager. The Hotel GM's management style is clearly seen by the smiles on everyone's faces. All employees are happy to work there and really do care about customer satisfaction! We did have an issue with constant slamming of doors at […] 2:00am in the morning by other guests partying. The staff did satisfy us based on what they did versus just saying "I apologize". "Close to downtown."
Pros: We stayed here for a couple of days and it is close to everything. Especially 5th street in the gas lamp district where there is a lot of food and shopping. Cons: $40 for overnight parking. It's like that everywhere downtown though.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel in downtown S.D."
Because of an airport shutdown(fog)...I and many others were scrambling for a hotel to stay the night. Expedia brought me to this one and it was a very nice experience. Clean room. Nice staff. Quiet. The only negative was the air conditioning was a little slow in cooling the room(it was very warm that day) and because it was off(understandable) when […] we arrived...the room was 78 degrees. It was already late(after midnight) when we arrived, so the first couple of hours in bed were hot. Not all the hotels fault(timing)....but the fan even on high seemed the same as low....not much air moving. Other than that minor minus.....nice! M.K. New York Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"A top choice for downtown San Diego"
I've stayed at hotel Solomar a few times and it always is wonderful, hence why I return. The rooms are comfortable and spotless, the facilities are immaculate and the staff is friendly. My one complaint is if you book through expedia, you don't get the same privileges as if you book directly with them. I think that's ridiculous. But overall the property […] is wonderful. The complementary coffee in the am and hosted happy hour are very nice additional benefits this hotel offers. The gym is a bit small but I was the only one in there so not a big deal at the time. "Stylish and comfortable"
Solamar is smart and stylish, well appointed, and a very comfortable stay. Excellent quality bed and bed linens. Good location close to Convention Centre and tourist attractions, and well served by public transit lines (trolleys and buses) close by. (BTW, many locals seem to think San Diego public transport is non-existent, but we found it quite easy […] to get around by trolley car and bus.) Right smack in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter, the hotel is close to great food and great nightlife. The Fish Market and the USS Midway are within walking distance (about a mile). "Hard to beat"
Modern hotel, clean, friendly service, free wine happy hour in the evenings. Only negative is that it is right next to a club that plays loud techno music until 2 am on the weekends so can sometimes be hard to get to sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton Hotel Thanks for the comments, very happy to see you enjoyed yourself. Also appreciate the feedback about our lively neighborhood. Our recommendation if noise is a concern is to request a room that overlooks the East Village (7th Ave), which does not face the Gaslamp. You'll find it a bit quieter on that side of the building. "Great place to stay!"
Hotel is very chic and the restaurant is amazing. Pool area is really nice with the lounge connected to it. Close to the Gaslamp but far enough from the crowds. "Beautiful downtown hotel with rooftop bar/pool"
The hotel was in a great location, walking distance to the major spots downtown (restaurants, bars, Petco Park). A little annoyed when I called ahead to see if my room was ready at 3 pm, but told to wait an hour after I tried to check. Received drink vouchers that were enjoyed by the pool. I called the front desk at 4 pm that my room was ready. After […] receiving my room keys I was suprised that it was not the room type that I booked and was told that I needed to bring that issue up with Expedia since I booked thru a 3rd party. Expedia, made it right. The hotel manager called me back immediately and switched our room to the one I booked. We were given additional drink vouchers as well. Redeeming those vouchers that evening did not happen. The bartender blantely refused/denied service while we patiently waited for service. Unhappy about the customer service we experienced we decided to go elsewhere. Beautiful hotel and pool area, customer service needs a facelift though. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great location. Cater to dog owners. Hard beds."
Overall Summary: Fairly decent hotel in the Gaslamp if you have Marmaduke tagging along or don't mind sharing the elevator with a pack of smelly dogs. Was up all night tossing and turning on the rock hard and creaky mattress in room 830. Room had giant crack across the ceiling, frayed carpet and dirty blinds. Massive dogs barking next door all night […] long and walls were paper thin - so this was NOT a good mix. Was not a pleasant stay and we will not return on on our next visit. Hotel caters to the dog crowd and alienates the non dog owning or traveling guests. Beware that the majority of the guests will have dogs, large breeds with them. Response by Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton Hotel Appreciate the feedback! Like all Kimpton Hotels we're pet friendly and have specific procedures that outline our cleaning process not only in our rooms, but also in our common areas. We also have guidelines about expected behavior from pets; essentially, they have to not cause any issues for other guests, damage the property or disrupt the operation. The same rules as people basically! Our recommendation is that anytime you experience something not in keeping with those standards, let us know right away to we can rectify it. We want to make sure that we're keeping the property to the standards you expect of us.

"Good hotel but slipping"
I have stayed at the Solamar many times over the past few years; unfortunately, this time I noticed it is slipping a bit. The restaurant could not get my order right and the waiter seemed clueless about what to do; I left a boarding pass request at the front desk that they lost; the tissue box in my room was empty for most of my stay; the bed was horribly […] uncomfortable - small things that add up to a less than satisfying stay. Some very nice people, though, and it's lovely that they always provide fresh ice water in the lobby and coffee/tea service in the morning! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Perfect location and Awesome quirky touches"
Just spent 3 fabulous days at this hotel and I have absolutely no complaints. Well maybe one but it's very minimal so lets get it out of the way. I requested some shaving cream at the front desk and they never sent it up to me. Perfect location! Only a few blocks away from Petco Park (for any sports fans), like a block away from all of the bars and […] yummy restaurants like The Broken Yolk and The Blind Burrito,, and a 10/15 minute drive to Sea World. Very nice boutique decor, and everything was clean. I especially loved the big whrill pool tub for bubble baths and the pool bar/ lounge area. There are heating lamps and fire pits to stay cozy at night. During the day you can relax pool side while sipping on the delicious Watermelon Margaritas or my personal fav: the Spicy Mango Margarita. Quirky perks I loved: leopard print robes in the room, along with bath salts for your tub, a yoga mat in your closet with free on demand yoga workouts on your tv, local jogging maps, and towels and hula hoops in the gym. Oh and the best part, wait for it.... WINE HOUR!!! From 5-6pm you could enjoy local craft beers or Watermelon Sangeria or Wine in the lobby with other guests for free, daily! Warning: Daily overnight parking is $40 a day, even for hotel guests. So factor that cost in. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Lovely hotel, lots of character"
We had a very enjoyable experience at this Kimpton. The room was large, clean, well appointed and comfortable. It was quiet, even with the pool view. "Nice hotel - not for quiet relax time"
The hotel is very nice and beautifully decorated. The staff were all very courteous and friendly. We ate dinner at the rooftop bar and lounge and the food and service were excellent. We decided to go back to the room early (11pm) and go to bed after a long week of work. Unfortunately there is a club outside of the side of the hotel we were on. The music […] was so loud (until 1:30am) that there was no way we could sleep. We could also hear drunk people talking and yelling in the hallway until about 2:30am. The rooms are not very soundproof to the hallway or the outside. So, I would only stay here again if I was plannng to go out to the bars until closing, and then drink enough so the loud drunk people in the hallway would not bother me. It may have been better if we were at the other side of the hotel. It is in a great location if you'd like to go out to the bars and restaurants in the Gaslamp or to Petco Park for a baseball game. loved the decor, the pool, and the cocktail reception - did not get a chance to eat at the restaurant but will definitely check that out next time. great location. was disappointed that they would not give us a late checkout which forced us to check out super early in the morning. other than that it was a great stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton Hotel Thanks for joining us. Glad you had a good time and our apologies for not being able to grant a later checkout. We chose this hotel for its proximity to the event location which was good. We checked in late (10:30pm) on Saturday night and we noticed as we walked down the hall that many rooms were hosting loud parties. The toilet in our room upon our arrival was dirty. Dirty wet seat and toilet bowl was covered in black specks. We also noticed that the tub was […] draining very slow so we called room services. No one showed up for 20 mins and we were SO tired that we called again. Finally a cleaner, then a plumber to fix tub came to the room. Others were called to the room with shower curtains, etc. it felt like tons of people were called upon. Finally plumber said he did the best he could and mentioned pulling out the hair from drain 2-3 times! I showered and the drain was slow so I was showering in several inches of water. The next morning we were woken up by a gurgling noise. Turns out the toilet was full of bubbles. I needed to urinate so we called guest services AGAIN, they suggested using the pool bathroom. Needless to say we asked to move and get a discount, break, comp on the room. In the end we got our parking and the first night comped plus a $50 food credit. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Is it just us?"
I was excited to stay at this hotel after looking at all the reviews. We only stayed for one night, and at 3:30 AM, we get a wake up call we never requested which made me not able to go back to sleep until 7:00am. My husband called the front desk to discuss the concern and he was too nice to mention I could not go back to sleep until 7:00am. Then we […] get a housekeeper knocking on our door at 10:00am. We answered but we did not go and open the door. He obviously knew we were inside cuz we said "yes?". Just decided to open the door and come in asking whether we need service. They should have been informed that we were checking out that day and that we DO NOT need service. In 30 min another lady came and knocked on our door whether we need service. It just seems to me that they had guests waiting and wanted to kick us out as soon as they can. So disappointed with the service, problem handling, and the overall experience. I never leave nasty reviews but I had to this time. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton Hotel Apologies, it sounds like we really missed the mark during your stay! I'm so sorry about the walk up call, I'd imagine they called the wrong room but I know what it can be like to try to go back to sleep after that. I'm also sorry for the lack of coordination from our Housekeeping team. Usually they're all over it, but it sounds like we didn't bring our A game. "5 day trip with boyfriend"
Booked the solamar for a 5 night trip with my boyfriend. You can't beat the location, steps from gaslamps bars, restaurants and shops. Staff was very accommodating and kind. Rooms were cleaned daily with no problems. Pool area was great, always found a chair and even if you're walking around thinking 75 degrees isn't tanning weather you're wrong! The […] pools on the roof of 4th floor and gets very hot. It's great. Bartenders attentive and nice. Fun atmosphere, good food. Many reviews complain about noise if you have a room facing the pool. We did have a room facing the pool and yes, there's music and often evening events on the area surrounding the pool at night but unless you have a newborn or are over 85 it's really not an issue. I was sick most if my trip with a bad cold and the noise didn't keep me up at night. It's a great hotel choice for the location, price and accommodations. No complaints. "Great for 20-somethings"
My girlfriend and I stayed at the hotel for 3 nights in August on a weekend. The first night we decided to pre-party a bit in the hotel room before heading down to the hotel lounge. Lounge 6, I believe it was called sits on the fourth floor of the hotel right above the gas lamp district. It didn't get too busy but there was definitely a good vibe at […] the place. After having a couple more drinks we decided to do a little bar hopping on 5th street. "Classy, Botique Hotel"
A very clean and classy botique hotel. The staff are all very friendly and attentive and it's very apparent the hotel is well run and managed. The heated pool and lounge area is very attractive and it's in a great, central part of downtown SD - right near the Gamlamp Quarter. The daily wine/beer reception hour daily is great as well as the morning coffee/tea […] that is available in the lobby area. Ideally, this hotel is best for couples, young singles or business travelers but not too bad for families either - just be prepared for some noise if your room is close to the swimming pool (although the room walls/windows do muffle quite a bit of sound) or overloooking one of the busier, local streets. Overall, solid for what you pay and definitely recommended. I would stay here again for any future trips into downtown San Diego. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
