Just got back and the only complaint I have is the beach. The hotel is nice and clean the rooms are nice but def in need of tv upgrades. The entertainment was amazing, at no point was I bored. Also of you don't like stepping on disgusting slimy alge then you will not get into the beach water. I heard a few people steped on sea urchins while I was there because you can't see the ocean floor and where you are stepping. However there is a beach down the bay maybe a 5minute walk that is beautiful. So if you want to save some money and still have a beautiful beach just suck up that walk and go to the beach next door at the Riu Tropical. Overall we enjoyed our stay. However the check in process was very unpleasant. We encountered the following problem: We were assured by Hotels.com that we paid to have two adults with two kids in each room. The hotel insisted that only one child was showing in their system. "Very friendly staff. Lots to do."
We stayed for 7 days, and stayed mostly on resort. The distance from the airport is a little more than expected, but was fine. You can arrange for transportation ahead of time through Expedia. I was glad I did to save the scrambling and confusion when you land. We traveled with 2 adults and 2 boys aged 8 and 12 and spent most of the time in the pool […] or on the beach. Windsurfing, Sailing, and snorkel were available at no charge, but if you unfamiliar with the equipment you need to pay $20 a person for a lesson. Snorkel was a $25 deposit that you need to renew every hour. My older son got scuba certified while there, and loved the experience. The cost was $250 for the basic demo, 2 pool classes and 2 open water dives. We had two different instructors, and both were great with an emphasis on safety. There are a few excursions offered that seemed to be too far from the resort to be worth while for us because we were fine with the amenities on the property. The food was good with some variety every day. We tried all the restaurants that the reservations were required, and the buffet and were satisfied with all the choices. The reservations were not as hard to get as some of the other reviews said. We also read reviews about bugs in the room (my wife was concerned), but did not experience any issues. We stayed here June 21 to June 28. Staff at this hotel is outstanding! They went out of their way to answer questions and make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Food on buffets was great and plentiful. Didn't try the restaurants as we didn't want to be tied down to a time commitment with our 8 year old. "Terrible hotel by the beach"
Personally, I am not returning to this hotel. The bad experience started when I first arrived at the hotel. The front desk staff was horrible. She had me going back and forth from my car for my luggage. Then she dropped me for another guest. I had to ask a manager to check me in. Which she did after locating my registration paper which the previous […] front desk staff dropped off at the desk without letting anyone know, so the process was delayed. I travelled with my wife and 2 children but the room had only 3 towels, and it took 6 hours to get another towel which was delivered by the maintenance man. The door to the room was broken so it was very difficult to push it open and pull it open. My shoulder hurt each time I had to exit or enter the room. I complained to the manager Cassantia Posh who send someone to fix the lock and not the door. The maintenance man said the door dropped and the carpenter had to be notified. "Disappointing for overpriced for what you get!"
This was our 4th time staying at RIU resort and unfortunately the worst out of all four stays. The hotel is closing for renovation for the summer, so it looked pretty run down, small old TV in the rooms, no conditioner, just shampoo and soap. Public bathroom NEVER had soap in the soap dispensers, no paper towel and the hand dryer didn't work. Food: […] only 3 restaurants on site that require two day in advance reservation- ridiculous! Only Gourmet restaurant is worth trying, the other two is waste of time. Buffet had good selection, but not as good as other RIU resorts we stayed at. I saw a huge cockroach crawling in the buffet and lost my appetite right away! Pros: they had variety of delicious local fruits that we've never tried before. Beach was great! Water was warm, clear and calm, lots of fish swimming around. We went sailing and kayaking (free of charge) almost every day. Pool water always looked dirty so we always stayed at the beach. Entertainment was great. Hotel staff was generally not really service oriented and looked like they didn't want to be there (maybe cultural thing). Last day of our stay, the lady asked me to leave lunch cafeteria because I was wearing beach towel. My cloths was soaking wet from the rain, so I had to use towel, she asked me to leave anyway. On my way out I noticed one lady eating in her swimming suit, I went back and brought it to her attention only to hear a comment that its not a bikini she's wearing but a swimming suit. "Won't be going back to this hotel."
75% of staff is rude. Also you obviously can't trust them with things you leave in the room. According to the front desk if you have anything valuable lock it in the safe. In my moms room her Safe was broke and they told her until they could get it fixed she shouldn't leave anything valuable in the room.. So half of the first night she had to carry […] a bag around with her. To get into one of the nice restaurants for dinner you have to make reservations but when you make them they have to be 2 days out so make sure you make ALL your reservations the first day. We only got to go to one of the dinners because we were only there 4 days and didn't make the reservations till the 2nd day we were there. I try to be positive of any vacation experience I have, but the room conditions of this hotel are horrible. I booked four rooms and the a/c was broken in three. I actually had to use our trashcan to catch all the water coming from the a/c vent. We would definately come back to Riu Negril. My boyfriend booked an ocean front room. When we checked in, we were taken too a room in building #2 that overlooked a courtyard. He immediately called front desk to let them know of the mishap. We were then given a ocean front room in building #4 and was told we could get an ocean front room in building […] 2 the next day. We decided to stay in building 4 so as to not have to repack and change buildings in the midst of our day. It was nice and quiet and it was nice to see the weddings that were performed in front of our room. We were impressed with the cleanliness of the facility, especially the common restroom areas. Always a cleaning person on staff to make sure the facilities were clean!!! Our room housekeeper, Hyiasynth, did a wonderful job!! We did not care for the way the reservation system worked for the restaurants that require a reservation works. We were only able to get into Luigis for a 9 pm reservation on Wednesday, April 2. There were only 2 tables reserved, the rest were empty. I am a beef filet conoisseur. The beef filet in Luigis was the worst I have ever had. I was expecting more from a restaurant that required a reservation. The waiter on that night made us feel like we were putting him out. "STAYED HERE MANY TIMES AND THEY ARE SLIPPING A BIT"
I have been to Negril Jamaica many times, over 50 and have stayed at all the Riu hotels on the Island and have always been satisfied with the resort. This trip however was a little bit of a let down on two fronts, the main one being that they no longer offer free internet at the hotel. They offer 90 minutes every 24 hours and only in the lobby of the […] hotel. This is a change from when it was free all the time in the lobby. You can purchase more time as I did for 3 days for $30.00, but had a hard time staying connected. I know this seems petty, but in today's world free internet that works is a must. Also, the food that has always been the best thing about the Riu has slipped a couple of notches and is not quite as good and the the coffee which was always great in Jamaica is now watered down and barley drinkable. The hotel staff however are great and the beach is one of the best you will find, calm and clear. They also no longer allow you to visit the other Riu just a short walk down the beach from our hotel, This is also a change from the past and not sure why? I would still recommend the hotel as it is one of the best all inclusive hotels you will find in Jamaica, but would like to see them change their internet policy and make it free again. We have been to many other island resorts. We had never stayed at a Riu -but have heard good things about the chain from several friends. This particular resort in Negril (the Club Hotel...not the Tropical Palace) was an older facility that does need updating, but it was still very clean and food was very good. The buffet food main menu items did change […] nightly, and they have an excellent salad bar. The buffet experience can be hectic with people trying to get from one area to another for their food. The method for reserving the specialty restaurants was limiting. They only reserve for 2 days out, and there are only 2 seating times. Our only surprise was the lack of friendliness of the staff. The service was good, but it seemed the staff was not very happy --and it showed in how they responded to the guests. Especially the bartenders.There was a general sense that they were not feeling cheerful like you typically experience in resorts of this type. Drinks were weak, and tipping did not make a difference. this particular resort served off brand liquor. In talking with other travelers from other resorts they were served higher end brands we are familiar with in the states. The rooms were very clean, but somewhat worn in appearance and the air conditioning was not very cool and could not be adjusted much.
