We spent 1 week at Akumal Beach Resort, which we heard of through friends who took their family last year. We took our 4yo and 16mo. It was a wonderful week of vacation and we would highly recommend to other families looking for a budget friendly, small resort. We did not want a "mega resort" so ABR was exactly what we wanted. The hotel was once extremely […] run down but is now in very good to great condition. The beach is outstanding as is the snorkeling. The pool area is borken down into 4 swim areas, which is great for separating out the little kids and the older kids & adults. The staff is overall friendly and while some may be apathetic, no one was ever rude or dismissive. All requests were addressed promptly and kindly, The rooms are exceptionally clean and the staff was responsive to our several requests for the room (building 6 or 7, a crib, roll away bed, king room & mattress topper). The food was good to outstanding; everyday there was a homemade juice/flavored water. The fruit, omelets, and grill was outstanding. The sides were always good to very good and the few desserts we tried were delicious. There was consistently pastas & pizzas for the kids at the dining hall. The pool area had a grill with hot dogs, hamburgers, pizzas, and chips & guacamole/pico de gallo, which was a big hit for my kids. You get a lot for what you pay, especially considering the beach & snorkeling. We saw over 30 sea turtles and hundreds of fish the 3 days we snorkeled. Read more

The beds were very hard. We were charged to use wifi in the lobby area and it wasn't available at all in the rooms. We were also charged to have a coffee pot in our room and all three days we had to get our own clean cups from one of the bartenders and had thankfully brought our own coffee. We had a ten day all inclusive stay at this resort and enjoyed it very much. It is a very friendly straight forward place. Nothing elegant, but elegance isn't the goal here. This is an easy going relaxing place where you can get away from the rat race. The staff is great. They treat you like an old friend. Very cooperative and responsive to questions […] and requests. The food is quite good and varied so meals are always interesting. The beach, which must be nearly a mile long, has exquisite, fine sand, a gently sloping entry to the water, plus a few undesirable rocks and irregularities. There are lots of fish and turtles and skates if you are a snorkeler.The swimming pool is quite nice with places for kids etc, and is the center for dance lessons and exercise stuff, (though a lot of that goes on in the main building). Very international mix of people. A few things that will disappoint some people are the lack of a golf course, lack of tennis courts (I think), mediocre parking lot, and no big time entertainment. I didn't like the wax on the tile floors in the rooms, but they are clean and more than adequate. If you want entertainment, there are Disney like places within a few miles that cost money but have endless things to do. And you can drive about ten miles up the road to play with dolphins. The value of our vacation was terrific. We will return. This was our 2nd visit. This is a quiet community, with a terrific beach and snorkeling. Saw lots of varieties of fish and many turtles in the bay. It is wonderful for swimming and very safe feeling. The food and service staff is great, the only complaint is the poor quality of house wine served. […] In fact the red wine tastes as if it had been watered down to stretch it. We enjoyed the snorkeling in Akumal Bay and Xel-Ha Park (nearby). The hotel itself was pleasant, but they could upgrade the towels and provide softer pillows for greater comfort. We were there for 4 nights and would have liked a chest of drawers in which to put our clothing and a closet that didn't smell moldy would have been nice.

Place is always very clean. Awesome beach and snorkeling! Food is pretty good, but if you are looking for nightlife and gourmet food, look elsewhere. The staff is always so friendly and we see them year after year, so that tells us that the management treats them well. Check it out...rates are also great. We love it down there!

We travelled with 2 kids aged 10 and 13 to this hotel over winter break. It probably has the most beautiful beach on the Riviera Maya and the snorkelling is amazing - yes lots of turtles, rays and unusual fish. The hotel is older and smaller (actually a good thing as ALL rooms are beach front) but very well maintained. The staff were wonderful and the […] food was excellent although there was not as much variety as a larger resort. My only complaint is that they do not offer suites. Trying to stay in a regular hotel room with 2 older kids is very cramped. I would have been happy to pay for a suite but 2 rooms were very expensive over the Christmas break. If the management is planning any renovations please consider adding some suites or extending the ground floor rooms. The rooms are pretty run down. There were rust marks in the bathroom, the room was desperately in need of a paint job, construction was generally cheap, the bed was uncomfortable. Housekeeping left a lot to be desired. pretty serene location , quiet, lovely grounds. The bed was not good in our room. We tried to book directly with the resort and we were told that they did not have any space at all. I called hotels.com and expressed my disappointment. They said where did we want to go, I told them Akumal Beach Resort and low and behold they said they had a block of […] rooms there with ocean views. Imagine that - when we got to the resort, they were no where near capacity as we were told. Go figure. The food was never hot. Also, it was difficult to get food withour garlic. The chefs were more than willing to prepare a la carte for us without garlic, however, the choice was limited and did not change. The fish of choice by the chefs was Coronado and it should have been Moro (grouper) it is a much lighter fish with no fishy taste. If you go in seasons with more people you had better take your own umbrellas because there are not enough palapas for the amount of possible guests - not even close. This is normal for all resorts and that is why we take our own umbrellas - 4 of them. Big beach umbrellas with ropes to tie them to the chairs. The beach is the best in that bay, however, you still have to watch your step when getting into the water, lots of rocks. Read more

We stayed at the Akumal Beach Resort after receiving a recommendation from a close friend who's family stays at the resort several times throughout the year. He described the resort as being a 3-star resort on a 10-star beach, which is very close to the truth. The resort is not a fancy one, so if you want gourmet food and fancy art on the hotel walls, […] this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a nice and clean, well maintained hotel and resort that is located on an absolutely amazing white-sand beach, then you'll be hard pressed to find a better deal. The resort's coral reef is worth the price alone, and the snorkeling is great for beginners or seasoned veterans. My wife and I stayed there for 9-days just prior to the 2012 Christmas holiday and we had a great time. The food isn't great, but it is good. And if you have kids, they have a great pool area, lots of directed activities for the kids, and a hamburger/pizza kitchen by the pool that will keep everyone going throughout the day. My main complaint, if I had one, was that their mattresses are quite hard, and their pillows are just a little better than terrible. Although we will definitely be returning to the resort at some point in the future, we will be bringing our pillows from home when we do. Read more

Akumal Beach Resort was exactly what I was looking for. It is all-inclusive, but not one of those massive resorts; it is smaller and therefore more intimate. There are families, there are folks from all over the world and generally the overall atmosphere is "friendly." The best: the food. Everyday, at almost every meal, there was something new to try, […] authentic Mexican food that was very well prepared. And a lot of variety. In the morning, you could get the same breakfast you like or try something new. At lunch, definitely try the ceviche. Desserts galore. Also the best: the staff. We had to move to a different room with two doubles instead of one king, and the staff was happy to help us make the change. (We moved into Building 7, which, by the way, is the furthest down so it was quieter. If you like it quiet, ask for Building 7.) Everyone who works at ABR has a smile and an "hola" for you. Not the best: The beds are really hard. I think you can ask for a mattress pad (which is one of those egg crate pads), but it didn't bother us that much. We are just used to hotels with softer mattresses. If a very firm, and I mean hard, mattress is something you can't stand, best to find some place else. One other minor complaint: wifi can be purchased for the week, but it only works close to the lobby. Especially didn't work way out in Building 7!!! You simply cannot beat Akumal Beach for its beautiful turquoise water and soft sand. It doesn't take much effort to snorkel out to see the sea turtles along with a large variety of fish and rays. I even saw a cute little orange squid only a couple inches long. The hotel's proximity to many of the important ruins was also a plus--Tulum is only a 30-min. colectivo ride away, and it is fairly simple getting to Coba by taking the colectivo to the bus station in Tulum, then catch a round trip bus to Coba. If you want to go to Chichen Itza, you will want to book a tour because it is not easy to get to without a car. Read more

Overall a very nice stay at a clean, quiet and friendly hotel. Located right on the beach, it's a perfect spot to go snorkelling or simply just chill out on the beach or by the pool. There is a but: if you want to experience Mexico, don't even think of going to Cancun or nearby. You could go there without ever speaking spanish or touching a peso.
