Old hotel needs renovation. Views from balcony breathtaking, , near the public beach and many cafes and facilities within walking distance. One way traffic takes up few more minutes off your holiday but clean rooms and value for money. The beach is probably the best served in the region. Make sure you protect your feet from sea urchins .

The hotel is situated relatively far from Dubrovnik old town, but has a decent (public) beach nearby. Finding the right entrance to the hotel was tricky, as the official address is pointing at the bottom entrance, situated in the pedestrian zone. The proper entrance is in a completely different street, so we had to ask locals for directions to find […] it. The hotel is "upside-down" due to the fact that it's located on a cliff side - the front desk and the guest parking space is located on the top floor. Parking space was provided for free, but it cannot in any way be sufficient for all, or even half of the hotel guests - if you're coming by car check in advance whether there are free parking spots. Front desk clerk was helpful and very polite, and also gave us directions on how to get to the old town and some other pointers we required readily. The rooms are spacious, but overall the equipment and furniture are old and worn out. The room was relatively clean (if you disregard old and smelly wall-to-wall carpeting) and a/c was functional. There were no strange noises in the room and the quality of sleep we had was good. Breakfast was served on the outside terrace, which was nice given the fair weather we enjoyed during our stay. The buffet was sufficient but not at all opulent, food was varied and plentiful, but rather plain (no fresh juices etc.). Read more

This is a 3 star hotel, so even if you book a Superior Room with sea view balcony, remember you will get exactly what you have paid for !!! Located in Lapad, it has an excellent location for the beach, and also for catching the No.6 (Babin Kir) into the Old Town. Dissapointingly, the only place you can get free wi-fi is in reception (9th floor) though pay as you go is available in the rooms. As it was out of season, I cannot comment on other things such as entertainment. For a cheap weekend, with a clean room, limited TV channels, in a very good location, then I got what I paid for. Top Tips: Be very careful when going out onto the balcony, as the sliding door does NOT have an opening handle on the outside !!! So if you happen to slide the door closed behind you, you are then stuck on the balcony !!!!!!! If you are driving there as I did, be warned that your Sat Nav will take you close to the hotel, but it is to a dead end road with an electronic barrier that you cannot pass. You then have to turn round and go back into town, and around the hill for access. Read more

Really happy with our recent stay at Hotel Kompas (8-15 Sept 12). Lovely hotel. Lovely room for which we booked a seaview room which was extra but worth it to look out to the ocean every day and sit on the balcony watching the sun go down. Lovely staff. Lovely breakfast, which is a buffet with lots of variety and topped up regularly. Bar and terrace […] menu a bit limited for vegetarians but the staff had no problems with us ordering a couple of starters for mains. It was a really nice and chilled week. Got a bit annoyed with the music, the radio was on in every area of the hotel and it was too repetitive - I would definately recommend they switch it off by the pool - you have to turn your ipod up loud to drown it out! Pool rules are a bit annoying that you cannot take your own food/drink by the pool! Lovely convenient location, 5 minute walk to the bus stop which takes you to the Old City, and the bus is so regular every 15 mins or so and only costs £1.40 for a single ticket. The area around the hotel was a nice surprise too, with lovely walks, restaurants, bars, nice beach to sit on and a couple of shops and supermarkets, so perfect if you want to be lazy and not go into the city. All in all I would definately recommend this hotel for value for money and location and quite competitive to other hotels in the area. Read more

Hotel relies too heavily on view, unfortunately room facilities are out-dated and while just about functional, fails to give any wow factor to go with the view! Gym facilities are extremely poor - everything comes in one shade of green and no cardiovascular machines to be found. This is not a hotel for couples wanting luxury beside the sea!

The Hotel Kompas is ideally situated right next to Lapad beach - a pebble beach with beautiful water and plenty of deckchairs available to hire. The main street has a range of restaurants to choose from, plus a few shops to get your beach supplies or snacks. The staff were very friendly and happy to help. Our room was basic but clean and very good considering […] it is a 3 star. My only gripe is that our double bed was more like two singles pushed together (which may even appeal to some people). Breakfast was good. Plenty of fresh fruit and pastries for me, and cooked sausages and eggs for my boyfriend. We went to the restaurant once, but preferred the food at other restaurants near by. We tried the pool once, but as others have suggested, the deckchairs went quickly and people will reserve them with towels while they're away for an hour or more. We ended up going to the beach instead since it was so close. The old city is not especially close. It took us 40 minutes to walk there, or 25 minutes on a bus. The buses cost 15k for a single trip, but I recommend buying a day pass for 30k which allows you to use the bus as much as you like. Speaking of a bargain, I would highly recommend the Dubrovnik card (1, 3 or 7 day). You can buy it from the tourist office or your hotel and it will basically give you entrance to the key tourist sites in the city, plus free bus journeys and discounts at many restaurants. It pays for itself if you want to go to the walls and the Rector's Palace. Read more

We booked a double room but the beds were two singles pushed together. We paid extra for a room with a balcony and sea view but we were right above the restaurant and pool which spoilt the view somewhat and it wasn't very private. On arrival, the sea view room we'd paid for wasn't available and we had to spend our first night in a room without a balcony […] or view. However, the staff were apologetic and compensated us with a meal in the restuarant. The hotel was clean and for the most part we received excellent service from the staff, although one day we were incorrectly told there wasn't a ferry from Dubrovnik to Mjlet island when there was. The hotel is situated next to a very busy beach in an extremely touristy area. There are lots of cafes and restaurants in the immediate area. If you want to escape the crowds, there is a slightly quieter beach and some quieter, nice restaurants along a walkway that follows the coast. Read more

This hotel is in the Lapad area of Dubrovnik, away from the Old Town. This isn't a problem though as you can get a bus (which goes every 10 mins and takes about 10 mins) to the Old Town and back easily. The hotel was built in 1968 and architecturally it's of its time. Hotel is like stepping back into the 70s.... Pretty beach in Lapad with plenty of restaurants and bars. Be warned its a 15 minute bus journey into Dubrovnik Old Town.
