What do you expect when you get a room in a house over 100 years old? For an old creeky wood floor mansion--it was perfect! The room was large with a living room, balcony, separate bedroom and a bathroom. There's no ordering movies on cable, and (gasp) no shower! All said, that's perfectly fine. Everything was good but... We booked the hotel and had one bed insted of two. When we came to the hotel it cost additional $ 30 to make changes. In the same situattion in Victoria we had changes for free.

Thought this was a really lucky last minute booking...Literally called from the Ferry on the way over. Free parking, large room, charming place...perfect for that old world feel we wanted. On the plus side the hotel is very convenient to US ferries and all attractions. The view from our room was excellent and the bed very comfy. However the property is in need of a make over.The carpets throughout the building were dirty with very noticeable stains on the light carpeting in our room. The curtains were coming off the rods. The Gatsby House […] is part of a complex of buildings that make up the establishment. There is no clear signage for check-in which is located in a different building across the garden and through another building. Breakfast is not included in the rate but available in the complex. However we tried to have breakfast at the Hunt Club located within the complex and waited 1 hour for our food and had to request coffee service and were told it was brewing this with only four tables to serve! Our food never arrived and we left. We went to a brunch service in one of the other buildings in the complex and I am glad to report had excellent service from that waitress(Hailey) who was working 10 tables alone. I probably would not stay at the Gatsby House again and could not recommend it. Read more

The staff in the Gatsby mansion were mainly employees of the first floor restaurant, but were very accommodating to our needs for ice, wine glasses and morning newspaper. Great location and the staff were responsive to our needs, but the Gatsby Mansion needs some maintenance. The windows were painted shut or would not stay open, the walls were cracked in places, and the door to the room was coming off its hinges.

Postage size room, you don't really want to stay in the room other then to sleep. The hotel described the room as having premium channels for the T.V. ,bathrobes, daily maid service, black out drapes. None of these services were provided. The color on the T.V. was green. The hotel is now bigger and although it says on its walls that it's a bed and breakfast - you might not get breakfast. Beautiful property, conveniently located. The property had just changed hands so it's hard to tell what will be improved. The restaurant was closed for remodeling and there was no desk clerk. We didn't see another person, guest or staff, the entire weekend. So it was like having our own private mansion.

This is a comfortable hotel with the friendliness of a nice bed and breakfast. Everything was clean. Charming decorations and very "Victorian". If you can't climb stairs, I wouldn't recommend it as all the rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd story and I did not notice an elevator (I could be wrong). Our room was just what I expected, but if you're expecting all the modern amenities, this is not the place for you. Our corner room had a king sized bed, antique wardrobe, loveseat, and windows overlooking the harbor. There was a modernized bathroom with a shower. It was an old home, and some windows were painted shut, and the carpet and furniture showed […] some wear, but in my mind that's what made it quaint and homey. The restaurant downstairs served a very nice breakfast and the staff was friendly and helpful. At first the other couple vacationing with us was in another building - in the only room in that building, but the staff was able to move them to a suite across the hall from us. Their room was larger with a separate seating area, but no shower. If you're looking for something different from the usualy sterile modern hotel, this is it. I'd love to go back. Read more

Note that we stayed in the Judges building, not the main Gatsby building, but you don't get to choose when booking (or I didn't anyway...) They had to change our room because our reserved room hadn't been cleaned (it was 8pm!)... the room was fine, but I was expecting more from a Victorian mansion. The bed was not good. Every move produced a loud creak, […] and the mattress was average to poor. Four-poster beds don't matter if you can't sleep. Two antique chairs in the room didn't make up for the feeling that it just wasn't a comfy place for us to hang out and spend time. Thank heaven the weather was gorgeous that weekend and we didn't have to spend a lot of time in the room. The onsite restaurant was average-to-high priced, with decent food (not great), but we only had the one breakfast there, so maybe not a fair judgment. The Gatsby was in a great location on the harbor, close to shops, restaurants and bars, with a nice view. It's a very neat, historical hotel with beautiful gardens outside. Our bed and linens were very comfortable and we had a great night's sleep. The bath/shower solution left the user with no place for soap or shampoo, except outside the shower on a shelf, the shower curtain was so long that it plugged the drain and the user had to stand on the curtain. I know that it was a character house, but it was a little too bit run down, with floors that sagged and caused me some fear, no overhead lights that made it difficult to see in our room. We stayed in the building called the Judges House. We were concerned because we had a room right next to the front door and thought we would hear a lot of traffic noise. We heard nothing! The room was decently furnished with older furnishes of a different era but nice. The bed was comfortable and had nice linens. The front desk was very willing to store our bag upon check out so we could tour some more prior to catching one of the later ferries back to the US. My husband and I culminated our birding trip to Vancouver Island with an overnight stay in Victoria. The Gatsby in is right on the inner harbor and it was easy to go out at night for a stroll & see the parliment buildings lighted up. We were on an ice cream-seeking mission and felt in the center of the night life of the town--lots of other tourists […] were about. The Inn is a wonderful old historical structure--we were there with a promotional discount and the price of the room was reasonable--we had a room with a painted mural on the ceiling--wow! This is a perfect place to stay in this lovely and quaint city. Beautifully furnished hotel, restaurant and rooms. My room was large, spacious, very Victorian in decor, comfortable 4-poster bed, and a charming to stay. Wireless internet service was a bit sketchy, but also made me stop and realize that this was a place where 24/7 connectivity was not […] a huge priority for me. Food at the 2 restaurants was very good and service throughout the place was terrific, very friendly and always cheerfully accomodating. The staff taks great pride in the place, and offers a several page written history of the mansion and all it's previous owners. The Inn itself is located directly across the street from the Clipper Ferry landing and Customs building and is on the "quiet" side of the harbor. That said, it is a very easy and beautiful walk along the harbor to all downtown shops and restaurants. A great character hotel in a prime location. The front desk is a little hard to find and the hotel is spread out and dated. However, the staff go out of their way to accomadate you. Hot water wasn't working in bathroom and they changed room for us but second one was ...in the bath tub, paint was cracked up and has blue water stain, drain was broken...I couldn't get in there. the bahtub was dirty. we were buried with dust when we turned on the ceiling fan, and all furnishings were dust covered. While we realize it was the down season there appeared to be no effort to ready the room for us.

When we arrived I went to the main hotel to register, Then up to the room in the Gatsby. When I first entered our room I noticed that the floor was well worn and dirty (Not vacumed) - food particules on the carpet. There were cob-webs all over in our room and the windows were dirty. There was an old style tube tv in our room. The drinking glasses and […] coffee cups were clean. They had 1 ea. of reg and decaf complimentry coffee. (More was offered the second day.) The bed was clean. The bathroom was almost clean (Dirt in the corners) and the tile grouting could have used a good cleaning. They supplied towels and soap (1 small bar of soap). The first evening we had dinner down stairs - there was only one staff member on for the whole restaurant. She did a fantastic job serving us and the other guests. She was always there when needed offered drinks and wine, and topped up our drinks quickly. I think she gave us the best service of any restaurant we were at during our stay in Victoria. The food was great. My steak was done perfectly. The downstairs areas were clean and tidy. No drink or ice machines in the Gatsby. You have to go to the main Hotel 2nd floor to get anything. Overall I was unhappy with this visit. I stayed at the Gatsby in the past and was extremely pleased before. It has sure changed. Probably will not go back again. (I will probably have dinner there though.) Read more
