lebua at State Tower - Bangkok

The hotel is pretty amazing. The building is beautiful from the outside and is perfect inside as well. The breakfast there was phenomenal. The location is decent, close enough to some cool things though I liked staying in downtown more. With all of that being said, the service is a little too much. Our bellboy was nice but when we tipped him, he kind […] of scoffed at our offering and said he usually gets tipped about 100 baht. Also, this hotel is crazy about visitors. A big group of us came to Thailand and others were staying at other hotels. We decided to meet at lebua because our room was definitely the most baller. We would really only have our friends over for about an hour to discuss what we wanted to do for the day etc. One time, the front desk called our room and asked for all of our guests' passports. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I don't even know if that's legal. However, everything else was in order. Pool, gym, breakfast, bar at the dome... Everything was spectacular. I would suggest spending at least one night here during your trip to Bangkok- it's the most affordable fancy hotel at which you will stay. Read more

The service was subpar at Lebua. They claim to be a 5-star hotel but checking was painful. We waited in the lobby for 30 minutes while they did all their paperwork and then we waited in the room for another 30 minutes for our luggage to be delivered when we would have rather just carried it up ourselves. The conceirge told us that we could not get into […] the Grand Palace with sandals on so we were closed toed shoes in 90 degree heat only to arrive at the Palace and find out that sandals are fine! The sky bar is also ridiculous. They didn't want to let me in because I was wearing flat sandals with a very nice long dress as they say their dress code requires "fashionable footwear" yet there were backpackers at the bar and people dressed more for hiking than a fashionable bar! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Sky-Train and Pier 8 are both close to the hotel, which made getting around very easy. The river view was amazing both during the day and night. I travel to Bangkok several times a year with family, and usually stay at the lebua in one of their 3-bedroom suites for at least a few nights. Unfortunately, there has been a perceptible decline in the maintenance and upkeep of the hotel, and in the quality of its staff. Our most recent stay, in November 2012, saw a number of problems of varying degrees […] of severity: -- live cockroach in the suite (which was on a high floor) -- requested rollaway bed for a 5 year old turned out to be a crib that had to be replaced -- cafe repeatedly tried to charge us for brunches that were explicitly included in room charges, requiring multiple corrections to bills -- poor wifi service and reliability -- DVD player in suite was broken on arrival and had to be replaced -- surprisingly poor TV/cable reception, basically halving the number of channels actually viewable -- pool bottom was grimy and water had distinctly unpleasant odor. Pigeons were also allowed to roost in plants lining edge of pool A number of these issues were corrected following discussions with hotel staff, but we had the benefit of several native Thai speakers in our party and absent their aid I am not convinced we would have gotten even the mediocre service we did receive. Staff also tended to be very hard to locate late at night or early in the morning, which is particularly frustrating given that many international flights arrive or depart during that time and you don't want to waste an hour checking in or out. Some confusion with the 8 day river view booking, I have stayed here about 17 or 18 times and this time with the same river view selection from Hotels.com was assigned a 21st floor room where all previous bookings have been on the 55 to 57th floor. The usual chocolates were not available (not sure why) and there appears to be some skimping on the shampoo […] and lotions. The $400 US bottle of non vintage Mum champagne at the top floor bar is beyond belief even by Thai standards and the Sirroco food is sub standard at prices that will leave you breathless, enjoy the view but eat elsewhere. We stayed at the Lebua three nights. The room was impeccable. We had a river view suite on the 55th floor. Fantastic breakfast! Unfortunately, we found that the elevators serving the highest floors were often taken over by restaurant and bar guests for the 64th floor. That was not particularly convenient.
