Albany Motel Melbourne - South Yarra

I have stayed at this hotel more than 20 times over the last few months and thought that it was time to alter my view on its overall rating.I really like this place and ALWAYS find the staff to be absolutely fantastic. They are by far the greatest asset that this hotel has. However, the rooms are hit and miss. I normally pay for the cheaper rooms, so […] overall, I think that most of the rooms in this price category are good value for money. But!! If you happen to chance one of the poorer rooms, then it is quite uncomfortable. The biggest issue is that there are a few rooms that I imagine have been flooded at different times and these rooms stink of rising damp. I have been placed in such a room on 3 different occassions in 3 different rooms. Last week, I'd had it and requested a room change which gladly there was another room available. These rooms should simply be de-commissioned until such time they are habitable. Oh, and while we're at it, changing a few seriously dripping shower heads so that they dont keep the guests (ie, me!) up all night would be a good idea too. I will be staying there again this week and from now on will be insisting on the above points being addressed in the room they book me. Read more

This hotel is rather a motel and the student (?) who was on call that night, when we arrived, was obviously not informed about the rooms. They are very basic: i.e. 5 channels on TV and a shower that changed temperature every now and then... some people like to close the door to the bathroom sompletely - sometimes... painting of the walls and seiling […] would certainly improve the overall impression. Very nice and helpful staff, they were willing to help with the most random requests. The place looks very nice and is located in a nice neighborhood. It is walking distance from the royal botanic gardens, a must see if you are in Melbourne. It takes 2 minutes to get to the tram, which you can use to go to any place in Melbourne. Disappointing - the description led us to believe that the rooms will be better appointed and cleaner. I guess, at the end, what you pay is what you get. The bathroom was very small and very mouldy. Arrival good. Room OK, it was a discount deal but when we came back after dinner the fridge was leaking badly and when we pulled the covers back there was plastic placed on a stain on the bedsheet. I stayed here for 7 nights in April. Before staying at the Albany I read all the negative reviews and thought I must've made a wrong choice. However, I would like to let people know that it is actually a lovely place to stay. I loved my room - 31 - it was quite and private, the bed was very comfy, my shower and bath worked just fine, the air con/heating […] worked perfectly, the tele was fine and I couldn't ask for better service. I love the common area downstairs, I love the colour schemes and the old French feel. And you are so close to the tram - and you're in South Yarra - the poshest place in Melbourne - but you're paying next to nothing for the privilege. The Albany is a small motel located a few tram stops from the city. The rooms are simple – little more than a bed and a simple bathroom. But if that is all you require, The Albany fits the bill nicely. Staff were friendly and courteous, and the reception is manned 24hrs, so someone is always available if you have a request. Water pressure was low, and it took forever for water temperature to change, so it was often a case of adjusting from freezing cold to boiling hot. Once we found the sweet spot, it was okay. If you just need a place to freshen up and sleep, and don't like the idea of hostels, then you could do a lot worse than The Albany. Read more

Room airconditioning ineffective. Lift broken down for last day - wife with arthritis had to walk up & down 2 floors. No battery or lead for radio/alarm clock. Computer system crashed & could not finalise account when leaving - despite giving written statement of what we were to be billed for, they got it wrong in 2 emails. Budget accommodation in quite a good location. Air conditioning is substandard ... noisy and not very effective. Most staff (I actually stayed there for a week} were friendly and obliging. Rooftop swimming pool a plus, and a nice breakfast/coffee room. Needs quite a bit of refurbishing, but would then probably not be so "budget".

Great Hotel it is close to alot of services such as the trams, Convenience Stores, Cafes, etc. The Hotel staff were pleasant and very helpful. Parking is minimal considering the number of rooms but we didnt drive much so it wasnt to bad. Overall excellent stay.

I chose this hotel as it offers pet friendly rooms. The room itself was clean, the air conditioning was good, and the king sized bed was very comfortable. There was a touch of mould over the shower area, and the shower head itself could have been higher (and I'm under 6ft tall). All in all I would recommend this hotel.
