BreakFree Aanuka Beach Resort - Coffs Harbour (and vicinity)

The grounds and pools were beautiful, well kept, and clean. The resort is on a nice stretch of beach. The room was clean. The shower was low- difficult for a tall person to use. The restaurant was expensive and there weren't other restaurants nearby - fine if you have a car.

The quality of house construction reminds me of a flimsy-looking college dorm, but rooms were spacious (dining room seats 10, plus another 4 on outside porch) and beds, tables, sofas were comfortable. Number of amenities was great but also cheap quality and/or 30 years-old. For example, having a private washing machine and dryer was fantastic but the […] dryer runs too loudly to use the TV or hold a conversation, and guests are told to leave the laundry room door open for ventilation, lest the walls become a rotting mess (our test of this policy did indeed produce instant condensation from floor to ceiling). Quality of common hotel areas is similar: the gym and mini golf were hardly significant, 2 of the 4 gym machines were out of order, at that, few pools are heated, with the one hot tub being luke warm, and not clean enough to be inviting. Except for a sliver of ocean view from the restaurant, the shore is hidden from the hotel by trees, although the setting is still very lovely. We enjoyed a peaceful stay in our room, but it certainly wasn't the resort property we had hoped and paid for. Book it if you need the spaciousness, or you are quoted at least 50% off regular rates. Good location and well supplied kitchen. Apartment was clean and well kept. The unit was a bit dated but in good condition. Room fixtures needed attention such as toilet down stairs in laundry. Water pressure was poor in shower & no air-condition in downstairs area, both bedrooms upstairs had a split system. Great location near beach and park area and […] very quite. A lovely resort with great facilities and access onto Digger beach which had great surf. We ate at the resort restaurant twice for dinner, the service was great and the meals were really nice. Breakfast was also good with lots of choice. Our main gripe was that we was placed in a room (120a) which was located right at the very far end of the resort. […] The room was essentially in the car park and we had to use a key to go through a security gate just to get into the resort which made us feel like we were away from the resort itself. It also meant that breakfast and the main facilities were about 10 minute walk away. The only benefit of this was that Digger beach was just across the road so we ended up going there, rather than using the resorts main pool as it was much closer. Overall, a lovely resort but we would have had a much nicer stay had we had not been out on a limb so much. Read more

Superb location - not properly conveyed on website. Get good photographer on the job - to photograph, eg, from MacCauley Headland. Good food at breakfast - and excellent evening pizzas. Room - single in my case - not entirely satisfactory. Lack of bedside lamps and/or rear lighting, for example, made it very awkward to read in bed. Clearly designed […] for tv watching. A little disorganised / poor service: - We'd booked for 5, room description said there was a sofa bed, but there was a rollaway bed (that had not been set up) under the stairs. - They didn't have our name on the breakfast list for one day in the middle of our stay. - Breakfast was chaotic, with limited seating (this would presumably be a big problem […] during peak periods, but probably not too bad off peak), basic items regularly running out and not replaced within a typical breakfast sitting (say 20 minutes), e.g. cutlery, milk at the hot beverage table (the coffee machine was out of order for over half of our stay) For kids: - Great pool area and grounds for outdoor play, but rooms should really have a second TV for when its raining etc - Walk to reception/breakfast area (from the other end of the resort) really wasn't that bad, even with 3 little ones (age 2-6) For grown ups: - restaurant was good - the 'gym' was terrible. This room was poorly maintained - examples: The bath was pulling away from the wall and felt as if it was going to break, the soap holder and towel rack were broken and coming out of the wall and the bed springs were coming out. I would only stay again if we were given a room that wasn't falling apart!

Gardens & surrounds are well kept, the beach access is beautiful. Restaurant meal & service was like a 5 star hotel. The day spa ,Mi Time, was amazing, easily the best massage we have ever had, Gaya the therapist is knowledgable & excellent at her trade. Thanks Gaya!!:-)

We were in a group of 12 ladies who checked in for 4 nights. The staff were terrific, restaurant terrific, breakfast terrific, hotel grounds and rooms beautiful however there was NO daily room service. Extra towels, tea, coffee, milk etc was available from the reception but nothing extra in your room. I was told that this is now Breakfrees policy to […] only service a room if you are there for more than a week and as we were at the far end of the complex we had a long way to go to get these items. This was a beautiful place - a bit out of the way. In summer, there would be lots to do, however, we were there in August - Winter in Australia. It was too cool to use the many beautiful pools. The hot tubs were not quite hot enough to keep us warm outside at night and the resort is quite far from everything. The restaurants were very expensive on site, […] the grocery store in town but a 25 AU cab ride each way - all in all expensive to stay there. Not much was open in town although we were told the following week there was a sailing event which would mean lots of activities. The beach was too rough to use. We did use the beach volleyball, mini-putt and board games. It was FREEZING in the room - we needed to open the oven to heat our 2 story place which had only a heater on the wall in the dining area. We called and were told this is all they had. On our last night, we were brought a small heater (likely because so many people complained - but we thought there were none...) which did not heat the entire upstairs where we slept. Not the best rooms smell musty and mouldy like deceased estate. Not the best service food and beverage or front desk. Rooms a long way from reception and no room service only take away pick up. Rushed through resturant when arriving 20 mins before closure this is not on if you are paying.

The units are looking very dated now, especially the kitchens. It was raining so we were limited to the indoor pool. This pool needs some serious work done on it and the spa was not working. On a positive it is really close to diggers beach and the gardens are well maintained.

quite good but our rooms smelt very musty & the bathroom had mould behind the door & bathroom tiles were not very clean. Not enough attention to dusting around lamps, under the microwave & other areas. The window key would't open one of the windows & fly screen didn't fit well so the room had mosquito's. No fly spray was supplied.

A lovely hotel and very friendly staff who could not help too much. It was a shame we had a group (12) near us and they decided that they would not consider other people and therefore security had to be called (but the staff were very good about this). Also it is a place for weddings which is excellent, however, be careful if they are having a wedding […] and there are some very nasty ushers. We had two different rooms to compare the first apartment we stayed in was cleaner and more updated than the second apartment we were given on our return trip. The outside of these cabins/rooms were ridden with spider webs and overgrown shrubs. It felt very claustrophobic to be surrounded by all the trees so close to the doors and windows. Hotel provides literature on arrival that restaurant is open until 10pm with last sitting at 9.30pm, I rang reception at 9pm to confirm restaurant was still open and was advised yes. The room where I was staying is at the southern end of the property, some 500 metres away, little if any signage to direct you through the grounds, so had to exit and walk […] on the road to get to restaurant, the streets have very little lighting and in some places none at all, only to be told when I reached the restaurant that they now close at 9pm and if I wanted takeaway I could wait and carry my meal back to my room. Had an enjoyable stay at the Resort and would definatly recommend family and friends to stay there. Perfect location for families with children as everything you could ask for is all in the one place!! Dinning room and Bar service VERY POOR. Those area need very close supervision. Friday nite dinning room had only 2 servers. Very slow on seating and delivering the orders. The so called Maitre D spent most time talking to employees (?)that should have been taking care of the guests. Very disappointed. Down stairs bar very slow on orders. Long lines, […] 15-20 minutes to get taken care of. As a matter of interest, in the past, we have stayed at the resort many times.The exception would be the last 3-4 years in that I have retired and spend most time in the U.S. made the booking in hope the service would be the same as in the past.
