Affinia Manhattan - New York 40.74892, -73.99218

The Affinia Manhattan is very well placed for getting around the major attractions in the city. We found it possible to walk to Times Square in ten minutes and to a subway in five. The hotel has a certain faded grandeur feel but the staff are very helpful. There's a very good information desk in the lobby and they sort out travel, transfers to airport, etc.We were given a 4th floor room to start with but moved to the 13th floor for the rest of our stay. Reception, correctly, said this would not make much difference to the noise from the street. The one big fault we found was that the window/air conditioning arrangement allowed in not only lots of noise but also real cold air we were there in late September so things may be different in summer or winter). There's a fire station around the corner and there was an emergency around 3am every night of our stay - New York fire engines have a very loud klaxon! We thought the room, with a small well-equipped kitchen area, was fine but there were no small table and chairs for eating. This was good in the end as it meant we went out for simple breakfasts and there's lots of good places nearby. Given what people say about many New York hotels, we thought this was a good bet if you are looking for neither luxury nor budget.

We had booked a suite and not only was it roomy and comfortable but there was also a full kitchen (not that we used it) and a balcony!! The check-in staff, porters and doormen were very friendly and helpful.

Rooms in need of re-furbishment. Although it was clean it did not always feel as though it was because some things were worn out. Quite expensive considering the condition of the room and the fact that breakfast wasn't included although the hotel does offer breakfast if you pay for it. Would go back to the hotel after it was re-furbished as it was in a good location but would not want to pay as much as we did for the accomodation.. Staff quite good on security especially when we first arrived by requesting identity checks before allowing us to use the lifts to access the guest rooms.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left the affina was perfect great staff comfortable and clean rooms housekeeping that respected the do not disturb sign on the door and even a view of the empire state building what more can you ask for 5 *

This was our first trip to New York and the Affinia's location turned out to be an exellent choice. The welcome was warm and informative. Our room on the 19th floor was well presented clean and comfortable and provided for all our needs. The hotel staff were extremely helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

on arriving at the Affinia Manhatten, we were greeted by friendly, helpful staff. Everything was explained to us about the room and other services available to us, free or for a small fee. On entering the room, it was brill, clean, spacious, and a small kitchen to do basic meals, complete with fridge. We were visited by the flor manager to ensure everything ok. Room kept clean each day, nothing to much trouble. Was allowed to keep room after hours due to being unwell before leaving, well loked after. Looking forward to going back. Only downside could do with double glazing to cut down traffic noise. After a previous visit to another hotel locally which was a bit of a dump the Affinia was brill. Recommend this hotel to anyone.

This hotel is generally very very good Rapid check in at 7pm on a Friday night, and our room was upgraded as it was my wife's birthday during our stay Door staff simply superb with hat tipping at every opportunity and reception courteous and efficient just like the housekeeping The only niggles I have is that the advertised high speed internet in the room was atrocious, as I expected rather higher than 0.3 mbps in downtown Manhattan and indeed the PCs in the business centre had a faster connection that my Mac did in the room. The only other niggle was that the carpet in the room looked worn but it was clean.

We were delighted with this hotel, it met all our expectations. It was an excellent location a few minutes from the Empire State Building and a short walk to Times Square. Penn Station was opposite with links to the subway system. Look forward to staying there again. Subway was the quickest way to avoid the traffic jams.

Spent ages selecting a hotel for our family of 3. Used other traveller reviews and candid photos to finally pick AFFINIA MANHATTAN. Chose it because rooms looked like a good size (compared to shoe boxes), location and price. IT WAS A GREAT CHOICE. Although hotel has many rooms, staff were very, very helpful and attentive. The hotel is a little tired but the rooms were clean. Only one moan: We spent 7 nights there and it wasn't until Day 6 that the room next door was occupied. We never heard our neighbours...just the toilet flushing! BUT WE'D STILL RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS.

we flew from Charlotte to NYC to see the Knicks play and were pleasantly surprised by the hotel accommodations. The time that we spent in the room, we found it to be spacious, clean and loved the view of the skyline. We will stay there again the next time we come to the City.

We were put on the 7th floor and street noise was loud all night. Hardly a "suite" - called such i guess because there is a small kitchen. Room furnishing are quited dated. Toilet was dirt when we checked in. Location great

We have stayed at the Affinia in Midtown near Rockefeller Center in the past and really liked that hotel. However, we were very disappointed in this location. While it was a good location for what we came to the city for (Wintuk at Madison Square Garden), the location is rather seedy otherwise. The hotel lobby was deceiving, as it seemed nice enough, but once we got to the room we were surprised at how shabby and outdated it was. The bathroom was dirty, and the room and hallway had a bad smell. We would not stay here again.

The location was perfect for us! However, check in was for 3 PM and the room was not ready. We came back at 4 and the room still was not ready. The front desk person was quite rude as was the hotel manager. It was a lot of money for poor service.

This hotel is not a "new" hotel, you can tell the building is older (as so many are in the bigger cities) but it has been updated. We got a complimentary upgrade to a 2 room suite with kitchenette, 2 bathrooms, walk in closet and nice sized bedroom. The beds were comfortable and the even had a pillow menu with a selection of different types of pillows to pick from. The only problem we had is we had to carry our stroller down from the main level to the street level (10-15 steps) because the elevator didn't go to that level that we saw but we never bothered to ask either. The fridge proved handy as we could get drinks and snacks at a deli down the street and keep them for after hours to avoid costly room service. I would suggest looking on the side streets for food beacuse everything on the major streets is expensive. Dunkin Donuts is right next door and Starbucks is across the street for your morning coffee. Penn Station is right across the street, we took the train into the city and out of the city and loved that we just had to walk across the street. I loved the Aveda products and overall I can say we loved staying at the Affinia and would go back in a heart beat.

It was just the checking in the hotel. It took 1 hour before I got checked and initially my room was not available even after one hour and I have to emphasized to them I waited for an hour and had this reservation since July so there's no way I'll wait any longer. The front desk went to her manager and came back and told me they have upgraded my room which was very considerate of them.

great hotel, greta location, excellent staff.

It was noisy, as there was a always a dumpster picking up trash behind the hotel but overall staff was very nice. Only problem I had was that a movie I ordered interrupted because of some problem with the tv. I was told that I would not be charged for it but I was. The staff was eager to remove the charges once I brought it to their attention. The location is EXCELLENT and th room is clean.

It was a good-but-not-great hotel. Comfortable bed and clean, which is all I was really looking for since I was in NYC and not looking to hang in a hotel room.

The hotel is almost directly across the street from Madison Square Garden (on the Penn Station side). The front desk staff was super friendly, especially for Manhattan. Anyone who has ever been will understand and value that. My cousin and I stayed in their 2 double bed studio and it was surprisingly large for a Manhattan room. I was shocked as I've stayed in some tiny hotel rooms there before. There was even a small kitchen complete with microwave, oven, stove, full sized fridge, dishes, utensils, and glasses. The TV was still a tube TV, but that's not a big deal to me. The only caveat with Affinia is that getting a room facing the street means hearing the honking of taxi cab horns and outside noise. If you're a light sleeper or have something important to do the next day that requires a really good night's sleep, I would ask for a room away from the street, although I can't say with 100% certainty that there will still be no noise since I only stayed in the room on the street side. Other than that, I was very pleased with the room and would definitely stay there again.

Very spacious room, comfortable beds. Tiny bathroom. Front desk was very understaffed. It was very easy to get around the city from there and there's a Starbucks across the street and a great family bakery a block and a half away.

Granted, was on floor 3 and aware of hotel location across from Penn Station ... but found a very large roach in my room. Yep ... 'cockroach'!! After a man came up with a can of 'Raid' and removed the already dead roach off my shoe he told he 'should be okay now'. Really? Like there was only one and they've been searching for it and finally found it ... whew! Nobody offered me any sort of compensation for something so gross. When I finally requested a room change ... I got it ... and they did upgrade me to a larger suite. So that was nice. Regardless, my eyes never stopped darting around my room for movement of the unwanted kind.

The Affinia was nearly right across the street from Penn Station. My room was large though the bathroom was small. All in all, fine hotel.

Great location, especially if you are an Amtrak or rail traveller in/out of NYC. The convenience to Penn Station, the size of the room, the kitchen, fridge, make this a great choice - especially for multiple nights. Go to a deli, grab some juice and milk, and save money on eating breakfast out! My only gripe was the HEAT! The room was substantially overheated, it must have been over 80 degrees in the room. There was no thermostat to control the heat and radiators were turned down all the way. I was able to crack open a window (yes, with pushing hard, these did open) but then the street noise was annoying.

Took the bus from DC, and dropped us off right across the street from the hotel. Great location for train and bus travelers. Hotel is a bit dark and the staff and concierge seemed too busy to help you (must be a New York thing). Aveda amenities so tiny its a joke. We barely stayed in the hotel over the weekend (why would you? its New York!) but the location was just enough to recommend again.

Reasonable rate for the location but extremely noisy - - even for Manhattan. Since I knew better, I asked for a room with a bathtub and shower - -not for the bathtub but because in any room with just a shower you can hardly turn around in (I'm 6' and 180 lbs).

This is an older hotel that has had some renovation. Our room was large, with a complete kitchen (including dishes and pots and pans!). The location is excellent for Penn Station/Madison Square Garden. Our room was quiet, despite being opposite the elevators. We had to wait at check-in, since a large group arrived just ahead of us, but this was the only negative. Not a cheap hotel, but a good value. Great for a family/group because of the kitchen.

Staff was curteous and rooms were very comfortable. I had a junior suite with a kitchen. The kitchen and bathroom were fine, but clearly not as updated as other amenities.

Original room was nt ready at check in so we were given a free upgrade to a 3 room 2 bath suite,great service

This was my first time in New York and after reading Hotel reviews I never thought I would get such a large room for the price. The room was well appointed and two queen beds was a bonus!

The location couldn't be beat, and the comfort of the bed was great, however, the room could have been updated. No matter how clean an outdated room is, it still feels dirty. The room needed new paint, carpet, and the bathroom needed to be bigger and re-done.

The beds and blankets were heavenly. The location was perfect - mere steps away from Madison Square Garden where we were attending a concert. The room was larger than i expected, and would have been quite comfortable for an extended stay. The bathroom was small, but certainly was clean and usable. We were not there long enough to make good useof the kichenette, but it was nice to be able to fix a cup of coffee.

Finding a decent hotel in New York can be something of a minefield so despite some considerable research it was still with some trepidation when we finally arrived We arrived late, about 23.15 but there was still plenty of staff in the reception area so that went smoothly. Then up to the room. I was a little nervous when I was opening the door because if I got this wrong then guess who was getting the blame from the wife!! The room turned out to be fantastic. If there was a compliant it would be that it was just a little tired looking. Having made this slight negative comment this is the only bad thing that could be said for it. The room was enormous with a fully fitted lounge, separate bedroom, one bathroom and another separate toilet, kitchen , and get this, A BALCONY, in New York for goodness sake!!There is not many better ways to start the day than sitting in the sunshine drinking your morning coffee and juice looking straight at the Empire State Building and listening to the sound of the city. The staff could not have been more helpful whenever we had a query, nothing was too much trouble for them. Not only would I be more than happy to return to this hotel, I would not stay anywhere else when I return to NYC. I have also extolled the virtues of the hotel and its location to everyone upon my return to the UK so they can expect a lot more Brits coming to them, hopefully this will not put anyone else off. Thanks once again for a great stay.

This hotel had a beautiful lobby and in a perfect location. Everything was within walking distance. It was nice that it was close enough to Times Square to walk but still far enough from the crowd. The rooms were a bit dated as i've read on here. I thought this was going to bother me but it didn't because rooms were very clean. But i do hope they update just a little bit. Also loved the pillow selection.

Complete kitchen, large rooms for this area of Manhattan. Can be noisy as it's directly on 7th Ave. Overall very good service, although checking in and out can have long lines.

The location is great too. The room is much bigger compare similar hotels in the NYC. The kitchen makes it very suitable family vacation.

The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. They gave us good recommendations on food and activities. The room wasn't as nice as I had expected from the pics but was still good. I would have liked a bigger bathroom. No vanity makes it hard to get ready in the morning.
