Overview

Location. The Mandarin Oriental, Washington, D.C. overlooks the Potomac River and five acres of manicured gardens in Washington, D.C. Potomac Park is located across the street, while the Smithsonian Institution stands four blocks away.
Hotel Features. The lobby of this Asian-inspired property was modeled after the Jefferson Memorial rotunda. Fresh orchids, limestone walls, muted silk fabrics, and a reproduction of "Above Washington, D.C." create a union between whimsical fancy and gracious Asian décor. Dining venues include Café MoZU, a contemporary restaurant overseen by a Master Sushi chef. James Beard award-winner Eric Ziebold organizes the staff at CityZen that features a Modern American fine-dining menu and is open Tuesdays through Sundays. The Empress Lounge boasts two-story water and garden views, and prepares unique appetizers and signature cocktails. A complimentary, limited-hour fitness center houses television-mounted cardiovascular machines and weight-training equipment. The Potomac River-view indoor lap pool opens onto a sundeck furnished with oversized round wicker-style chairs topped with pillows. The 14,000-square-foot Spa at Mandarin Oriental offers pampering pleasures such as the Amethyst Crystal Steam Room and the Color Therapy Experience Shower. Holistic remedies draw on Balinese, Ayurvedic, Chinese and European techniques philosophies.

Guestrooms. The nine-story Mandarin Oriental offers 400 guest accommodations, including 53 suites. Rooms reflect Feng Shui principles and feature silk fabrics and teak furnishings. Beds are dressed with pillowtop mattresses, 300-thread count Fili D'oro linens, down comforters and pillows, and silk duvets. Select accommodations extend onto step-out balconies. Suites boast 32-inch flat-panel televisions, bathroom flat-panel televisions, and DVD and CD players. Standard accommodations include the same bedding features as the suites, but are furnished with flat-screen televisions. Chinese marble bathrooms feature separate bathtubs and showers, bathrobes, slippers, marble-and-teak vanities and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries.

Expert Tip. Some of the finest jazz artists in Washington, D.C., perform at the Mandarin Oriental Fridays through Sundays, while Thursdays heat up with live Latin-music performance.

The hotel is a really beautiful hotel. They were able to check us in early but they claimed they were giving us an upgrade and they put us in a handicap room which does not have the nice bathroom. Not much of an upgrade. There doesn't seem to be anyplace to park your own car and valet parking is expensive. If you're a lady, you will love the whirlpool and steam room in the ladies locker room, very nice. Only downfall, don't eat here if you can help it! If you want food, go back out across the bridge and find a restaurant! Prices were way to high!! We sat in the lounge, drinks were basically over priced, we ordered some fancy chicken wings that were double what you'd pay normally, the menus are very limited without many choices unless you eat sushi, sashimi, etc. They will give you mixed nuts on your table if you get something. The jazz was nice, if you go on the weekend, but the lounge gets crowded and there's not enough seating. Our room had an honor bar but make sure that you check it for whats in it and match it against the list; we were missing several things, but I was able to let the front desk know so they didn't charge us for it. There is a CVS right next door that was opening a few days after our visit, get your snacks there. Breakfast was ok but very expensive, plus they charge a delivery fee and extra service charge. So, beautiful hotel, sleep here, but if you want to save some money, go out for all your eating and activities.

To the point... I liked the hotel and it was quite comfortable. But, NO SODA MACHINE!!! Really? So, I have to go to the bar or get a soda from the room bar? $4.00 for a tiny die soda!!! A little inconvenient. Other than that, it was just fine.

I would definitely recommend the Mandarin Oriental. However I would caution future visitors to understand that the prices for food and drinks are quite high. On average for $12 for a glass of wine or beer. We went off property for dinner and drinks, and the good thing is that the proximity of the hotel is just a short cab ride to more affordable establishments. In fact a short walk over the bridge and you are an amazing outdoor fish market that will cook fresh seafood to order. Dawn

The spa is great - also expensive but the facilities and service were appropriately excellent. There's a Starbucks across the street and a sandwich shop next door, but not much else in the same block. However, the National Mall is only two blocks away.

Very nice hotel. Great location to the national mall (walking distance). Bathroom was beautiful. We were expecting a little more out of the room itself for the price and the reputation of the hotel. It seemed a little dated and in need of a renovation, but it was clean and comfortable. The hotel itself is beautiful. I recommend a water-view room. It's pretty amazing especially if you have a view of the Jefferson Memorial. They have live jazz on fri and sat nights which is a treat.

We had a marvelous stay at the Washington, DC Mandarin Oriental Hotel. We were greeted in the lobby by attentive staff that gave us impeccable service. The lounge in the hotel was lovely, inviting and quite active. There was even a terrific jazz singer entertaining the patrons in the evening. Our room (deluxe water view) was beautifully appointed and the bathroom was beyond our expectations. This is truly a great hotel.

Disappointed that for this pricey hotel the furniture needed to be refinished or replaced. Also, did not receive the type of room that we requested.

Excellent in nearly every aspect. The fee for overnight parking is a bit pricey, but this is a five star property so I wouldn't expect anything different. The location is perfect for most downtown activities. I would definitely stay at the MO again, and I would also recommend it to others.

We enjoyed our stay at the Mardarian, however it was a long walk to a Metro Station. It is not very convenient if you want to see the city, unless you want to take taxis everywhere. The rooms were very nice, but the beds were on the small side. The service was excellent, no complaints.
