"Great location. Lots to do."
Just what I expected. Upgraded rooms still felt a bit old.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Not worth the money"
Definitely not worth the money. We paid $200 and our room had some ocean view but looked right out to the restaurant roof. For the price we should have had top floor with great view. Had water issues and water was out twice. Balcony sliding door did not lock, room was small and no chairs inside. Had to bring patio chairs inside. Water in shower was […] warm only and too soft. Carpet is old and had holes in it. Overall hotel could use some serious upgrades. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Very clean even though worn. Comfortable beds and right on the beach. Got to keep on them to get service, a little lax on that end. We have stayed there many times and will continue to stay there in the future.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Being from Wisconsin we were happy to get to stay right on the beach at this price! The first room they gave us opened up looking into the restaurant adjacent to the hotel. Of course we wanted to relax with the patio door open, that wasn't going to happen. They kindly moved us up a floor so we weren't bothered. Room was clean, shower was cramped, and […] being 5'9 I couldn't stand under the shower head... Maybe if I was 5 foot! No place to sit in the room other than on the bed and no chairs on the patio made it a little awkward. Walking distance to great food! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

I've stayed in nicer motel 6.. It was hard to get them to refill the coffee supplies everyday and there were ashtrays everywhere encouraging smoking right outside the rooms that did not have air conditioning. The rooms needed an update.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Surfer Inn was wonderful for the price, great location, wonderful staff would definetly stay againGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We had a very good time. Service at the hotel was awesome, they were very kind. For the price it could not be beat.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Close to beach and restaurants"
Hotel's location was great; however, the shower did not have hot water. It was luke warm. Called for service but it was late evening and no one showed up.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Almost perfect getaway , except for the two ladies in the reception area, not very friendly. Other times when we visit the area , the guys are in charge, they were super nice. otherwise we enjoyed our stay. We will come back for sure!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Can't get enough of the view"
I love staying at the Surfer Beach Hotel. I come back here every time I visit San Diego on business. Although, I was unable to get hot water in the shower...Genuine Expedia guest review
"Awesome location, dated room in corner of hotel"
The room was more dated than the photos show. The room we had was in the far corner, with a miniscule ocean view, and balcony. It smelled musty and there minimal furniture. There was hot water, front desk was friendly. Free coffee/tea in lobby was a nice touch. Location was incredible. World Famous (attached to hotel), restaurant has amazing food/drinks. […] Stay here if you aren't going to be in your room a lot and just want easy beach access. Parking $15 daily, unless you find street parking. Would stay again, just for location. Hotel is in great location. Unfortunately room key did not work so could not leave room. We arrived around 11pm and it took over 40 minutes for Management to figure out that room key doesn't work and they can't fix it.It made for a late and very uncomfortable night. They did not charge for the parking which was nice but should have been free anyhow […] for a person who rents 3 rooms and has only one car which was the case. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Million dollar views from a Crapy place"
I stayed for 3 nights on a business trip. Ocean view and beach access are amazing. However rooms and building is a second class hotel at best. Very expensive for a run down hotel except you are in SD for surfingGenuine Expedia guest review

"At Least It's a Room with a View"
So my family (2 adults and 1 child) stayed in a two bedroom room on the third floor with a full ocean view. We checked in around 4:30 (check-in was 4) and quickly checked in and got our parking pass for the hotel parking. We made our way up to our room and opened the door, and promptly hit the vanity with the door. Each room doesn't have a ton of space, […] but it is a room with a full ocean view (something you don't get living in the deserts of Vegas), which made it worth the cost. There was no fan in the bathroom so showers steamed it up really easily, although it looked as if some rooms do indeed have bathroom fans. The balcony included a small plastic table and two plastic chairs which was enough for me to sit down and watch the beach and ocean, which earns an A for me. The room was clean and came with a mini-fridge (empty), two beds, a bedside stand in between the beds, a dresser, and a large tv over the dresser. There was also a fan in the closet in case it got a little too warm. There were no bugs or bedbugs in my room that I could see (or feel) which is also very important. But the biggest factor was the ocean view, which is the reason we booked the hotel. The room was eh, mainly based on size, but the view alone made it worth it. There's a heated pool and a bunch of restaurants nearby, as well as the pier nearby. The room was alright, the view made it worth it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Right on the Pacific Beach"
The hotel is sparse, but when it comes to staying right on the beach in San Diego, it was just fine. There were no chairs in the room, and there were 2 on the balcony. The beds were fine, the bedding was clean. The view was priceless. The restaurant, World Famous, is awesome.Genuine Expedia guest review
Great. Location...rocks throw from boardwaLk and restaurants. But no alc and $15 dollar parking per night. When I go back to San Diego ill be looking at the best western next to tGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Clean Two Star Hotel"
Great location. Hotel is a two star but it was clean and good enough for what we wanted. In addition to the beach, great places to eat are a stone throws awayGenuine Expedia guest review
This is a nice hotel that is literally on the boardwalk. Staff was very nice and the rates were great. Only issue was lack of AC. The rooms got a little stuffy but if you open the windows and get a fan going they are just fineGenuine Expedia guest review
"Location Location Location"
You want Beachfront, super Ocean View, steps to the sand and awesome people watching all at an affordable price. This is it. Check in was smooth and Arian set us up in a head on ocean view room w wrap around balcony. We saw the beach, boardwalk-, pool, marina and passer by action from the 4th floor all in one. We had instant access to World Famous and […] Woodys. Imagine beachfront outdoor breakfast while people watching on the boardwalk at Woodys. Then imagine a fantastic beachfront dinner of Mako Shark at World Famous. IKR!!!! Lets face it, the rooms themselves are dated and worn. But all you need the room for is to sleep. "The best hotel experience"
My husband and I loved our stay at the Surfer Hotel. The room was super clean, we felt as if we were at home with the comfort and cleanliness. The customer service was excellent! This hotel experience was similar to our stay in Tucson at Lowes Vantana Canyon. We loved the Surfer and will return again soon!!! Thank you :)Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"visiting relatives and ocean life"
The hotel proximity to the beach and surrounding restaurants and bars and entertainment was outstanding. The room was ok but old and no hair dryer or air-conditioning. But because of the ocean being right outside our door we were very satisfied considering the first day there was jackhammering of the pool....noisy but they were done by the 2nd day there. "Never Staying Again"
What do you say about a hotel that will not let the guest use their lobby bathrooms, the sink leaked, the shower was cold, the pull out bed was worse than normal and the rooms do not have blow dryers?! Never staying again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice Hotel Close to the Beach and other places."
Location Location Location. The hotel itself is on prime real estate. Right next to the beach with plenty of places to eat and walk around. This hotel is quaint and has a nice simple vibe. The rooms aren't too big, but it is enough for at least 3 people comfortably. A king size bed and a good amount of walking room. A sliding door leading to the pool […] or balcony depending on what floor you are on. The bathroom is tiny....but the sink is located in a room separate from the toilet and shower. Right outside to be exact so its not a nuisance. Security does make its rounds at night so I wasn't really worried but I like to play safe and kept the doors locked anyways. Overall a great experience if you plan to stay out of the hotel room and enjoy San Diego. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Cold shower with zero water pressure, thin walls, loud neighbors, one pillow for a king size bed, hardly any TV channels, moldy smelling, zero air conditioning.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Stay away from it!"
Even worse than a motel, dirty, not maintained, smelly. The hotel pictures posted online are complete miss leading. "Just what you expect a little beach hotel to be"
We were headed into SD for a convention and opted for the beach instead of the Gaslamp District (side note, even in am rush hour its only a 15 minute drive to the Convention Center). The Surfer Beach Hotel was in the right location, at the right price. Simply put, it's a 3 Star Beach hotel, and delivers as promised. Nearly every room has a view of the […] beach, plenty of restaurants/bars in close proximity. ONE FYI - The rooms do not have A/C. Now this is San Diego, so it's not really necessary, but if you are sleeping in the bed next to the patio door, it can be bright b/c you need to leave the curtain pulled back to get some air flow. Again, remember it's a 3-star beach-front hotel - for the price and location, I would gladly stay here again Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Decent and comfortable room"
The room was ok, comfortable bed and it had a couch. The pool was drained and no one was working on it during our stay. "Hotel right on the boardwalk"
My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights and had a great time. "Not very family friendly."
The room was very small and hot. Looked much nicer in the pictures from the website. The carpet had a huge red stain on it that was still wet and had a bottle of empty carpet cleaner on the floor next to it. I am sure this is why the room had such a horrible smell. It took over ten minutes for the shower to get warm. The pool was filled with sand and […] not very clean. It was very hard to sleep at night with all the chaos outside by the pool. It went on until after 3am. The television had a line all the way across the picture and the refrigerator did not keep items cold. This was a huge disappointment not to mention you had to pay for parking on top of the over priced room rate. The only good thing about this hotel was the close beach access and the staff was very friendly at all times. This hotel is more for college kids and young adults. Not families with small children. We really enjoyed the stay. Especially after negotiating a better room than was initially given us. "Disappointing Hotel Stay"
Upon checking in I found out that hotel charges $15 for overnight parking. The room I stayed in has wornout carpet, the shower stall is only half the normal size, I also had to wait several minutes for hot water to eventually come on after I turned on the shower. The bathroom does not have ventilation fan, so I had to open the window all night. The […] room does not have ventilation fan either. For security reasons I did not open windows. Hotel's wireless signal was very weak at my room's location. The hotel is right on the beach, several other hotels such as Best Western are also located in same area. I wish I had picked a well known name and received expected quality of my stay. At 9am, hotel maid knocked on the door and immediately used master key to enter the room as I was still sleeping. "OK Place, Great Location"
A little pricey for what you get, but it's the beach and prices are high. No AC, and it was kinda hot. Bring your own fan. Their credit card machine broken and I had to come back. They charge $15/night for parking, making my one-night stay about $176. Seems like all the rooms have a view of the beach, with, but you also have a view of the run down roof […] of the place that kinda ruins it. Get the rooms in the front, or up higher (for a price) to not have to look at the weather torn and faded paint building structure. It is noisy - people like to party on the balcony. They allowed this partying until about 4am, then I called the front desk who was a bit gruff with me, but he said he would "tell them to shut up," and abruptly hung up on me. Not real professional, but not terrible either. The pool is very ugly and seemed like very few people went in. The deck was old and beat up. But their is a deck facing the beach that would make a nice place to hang out with a group. I will go back when the price is more like half of what I paid. I'll bring a fan.
