The Hotel Marina is a classic budget B&B accommodation in Athens, near the heart of the tourist district - about a 20min walk to Plaka at the foot of the Acropolis via Athena street with lots to see along the way including a huge fish/meat market. The hotel is about a 5min walk to Omonia Metro Station which will take you just about anywhere with regular […] and frequent trains. The hotel and staff are quite decent/friendly, the place feels classy from a bygone era, however, the location (Omonia), leaves a lot to be desired. While the streets and buildings are sketchy and a bit scary on the outside, especially at night, you'll find yourself feeling pretty safe if you stay to the main streets and get back before midnight (later is OK if you're dropped by a car/cab at the front door). I visited several of the hotels in the area and I'd say Marina is located on one of the better side streets where you'll have less street noise, albeit not the greatest view. There's not much in the way of food nearby except convenience stores. The hotels' breakfast was satisfying, however, predictable if you wind up staying more than a few days. For the price, I'd definitely stay there again as long as the neighborhood doesn't get worse. Read more

The hotel is not the best location of town, as others have written. Overall I had no problems, but really didnt venture out much at night anyway. I wouldnt recommend it for single female travellers, but anyone with common sense and is travel savy should be fine. The reviews on here are quite accurate. The neighborhood seems pretty sketchy. There were lots of groups of guys just hanging out on the street and talking on their cell phones. I wasn't quite sure what was up with that. I didn't exactly feel unsafe, but didn't do much in Athens in the evening either. As we were walking up, my travel partner was concerned […] about what kind of hotel I picked, but later referred to the Marina as a "oasis" after seeing the inside. The room was big and seemed "American Style", however the air took a long time to cool off the room and it smelled kinda like urine. The breakfast was good and had a lot of variety of choices. The Marina hotel property is ok but the neighbourhood is awful! We arrived on Easter Sunday and couldn't believe that we were in Athens! The first thing we saw after existing the metro were drunks, drug addicts, drug dealers, and very hostile looking individuals. We felt like we were being watched the entire time from existing the subway to walking […] to the hotel. It almost felt like we were in the middle of a desperate refugee camp! We're from London and are use to have a very vibrant and mix society but this was a bit overwhelming. It was probably due to the holiday. We made it to the hotel property and were glad to be off the street. However, when we got into our room and look out the window, we were looking at one of the worse run down buildings that we've ever seen. It looked worse than some of the shanty towns in South Africa and was definitely scarier! We ventured out to walk over the Acropolis and still felt quite threatened by all of the migrant young men looking at us threateningly. Once we made it over to the Acropolis area (10 minute walk) it was like you were in a different city! The breakfast was not worth getting out of bed for so if you stay, don't waste your time. This was my second time at this hotel, price is very low, rooms and hotel very clean, nice free breakfast, very helpful employees. hotel is just a short walk to Omonia metro station. no hotel parking, parking 13 euros a day. only concern was safety walking from metro to hotel late night. although i did not have any problem. will stay there again.

Overall the hotel was pretty good. It was clean, breakfast was the usual European type, service was good. The water in the shower was not consistent and was either completely hot or completely cold and if you did get a medium temperature it was hard to keep the same. The hotel was fine in a good location Omonia Square near all the tourist attractions, but unfortunately the surrounding neighbourhood in Omonia Square could do with a serious clean up. Although we didn't have any trouble from anyone, there were a lot of people just laying around so it felt a bit uncomfortable.

This is an old hotel which has been refurbished nicely. Good, small, simple but comfortable room, decent bathroom, satellite TV. I never felt unsafe in the neighbourhood, but if you were a woman travelling in your own, I'd suggest a taxi to the hotel at night. During the day there'd be no problems at all.

The Marina Hotel in itself is well kept and feels safe to be in. The staff are very helpful. The room we had was ok.. the price was VERY low. This was a factor for us personally, in that the low cost helped; the hotel has free wifi and the breakfast was 'ok'. As others have mentioned the neighbourhood it is situated in can be unnerving. The location, […] isn't too far from Omomia Sq and main roads; however Voulgari Street, where it is situated has residents openly injecting drugs. Discarded needles etc are therefore a health and safety concern. Also is the potential for a user to need money to pay for their addictions. The police are a presence in the neighbourhood, but "appear" to walk on by in some cases. I would say, until the street is targeted for some sort of clean up programme by the local authorities; the hotel (which, in itself, is pretty good and also great for price) is perhaps not so suitable for families with young children. Hotel Marina is a pleasant inner-city hotel that really cares about its guests. Linens are changed daily; a fridge is provided; there is free Wifi and, if you came without your laptop, there is a computer in the foyer for your use. Breakfast is excellent - cereal, fruit, two kinds of bread, cheese, ham, cake, biscuits: I suspect that younger guests […] make a packed lunch. No other meals are on offer. There is a vast selection of tourist leaflets; that is to be expected, of course, in one of the foremost tourist destinations in the world, but they are well displayed. I read reviews before our departure which painted the area as a drug-dealing dump with people sleeping rough in every shop entrance. True, the street is hardly a posh area, but nor did it feel dangerous. No-one tried to sell us anything, let alone drugs. The locals are largely Muslim immigrants, many from Pakistan. There are lots of shops selling mobile phones and other shiny aspirational merchandise - including cricket bats! When my husband asked where they played cricket, the answer was a non-committal smile. The hotel is extremely well located for transport to all the main sites. The metro and the sightseeing double decker stop are 10 minutes' walk away, buses pass regularly. Tourists are warned that taxi drivers will try to take advantage of their lack of local knowledge, and it is as well to ask at the hotel reception how much one should pay. Having said all this, only one taxi driver tried to pull a fast one on us in the course of the week. However, it was a good thing that we always had a city map with us, since drivers often did not know the street, which is rather tucked away, though there are several main streets a stone's throw away. We had such a great trip. The hotel isn't located in a great area but is fantastically close to the city centre and all the sights. It is barely a 5 minute walk to reach the restaurants, shops and busy historical centre. It is a true diamond in the rough as the hotel itself is lovely and very homely. The hotel is also surrounded by some of the most […] impressive street art we have ever seen and we spent a really enjoyable morning photographing this during our stay. Whilst here I was unfortunate enough to fall ill on a Sunday night but the staff at the hotel were amazing. They called an ambulance for me, translated for us and even helped us to find a pharmacy open at 11pm on a Sunday night (Quite a feat in Athens!). Read more

I feel a little sorry for the Marina Hotel. For a three star (at best), it is very average. The staff were very helpful and friendly, the rooms were small but adequate (ours with a view of the rear guttering). Basically, you get what you pay for. Unfortunately, the neighbourhood outweighs any good points about the hotel. It is not a nice area at all. […] We were a little unsure about whether to make the reservation due to other reviews of the area, but went ahead anyway. On first impression when we arrived around 8pm, the drunks outside were very friendly and helped direct us to the hotel. When we asked the receptionist at 9pm where we should go to eat in the area, he suggested that at that time of night, we shouldn't go any further than the takeaway 5 metres away. We decided we would wander a little further and regretted it immediately. The streets were literally filled with drunks, drug dealers, prostitutes and people loitering as if they were looking for trouble. I've travelled a great deal and been in a number of uncomfortable places but this topped it. We stopped in our tracks, went back to the takeaway the receptionist had suggested then straight back to the hotel. If you do stay at the Marina and want to go out at night, please DO take a taxi, for your own safety. Breakfast was again, very adequate. Bread, ham, cheese, eggs, jam, yoghurt, cake, orange juice and tea or coffee. We watched with amusement as a couple of old ladies filled their handbags with enough food to last them a week. The waitress was puzzled when a school trip of 40 kids arrived for their breakfast to find no food had been left (and to her credit, rapidly re-stocked). All in all, the Marina Hotel was pleasant enough but greatly flawed due to its location. For the same money, you can easily find a hotel of equal or higher quality in a much better area. Read more

Although it is in a location filled with prostitutes and drug dealers and users, the crowd that gathers in front of the hotel is of immigrants and not addicts and they gather right in front of the hotel because there is an immigrant tavern right across the street.
