"Nice hotel and great buffet ."
We had a party of six and spent two days at the Hilo Hawaiian hotel which was easy to find and plenty of parking. We also enjoyed the beautiful Queens garden and view of Hilo bay. The buffet at the queens court resturant was excellent with a variety of main entrees, salads, and deserts that would satisfy most pallets. We also enjoyed listening to some […] live music while relaxing at the main lounge. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel - recently renovated"
Location was easy to find plus was close to Hilo's major roads, onsite free parking, obvious locations such as elevators, good signage on floors, rooms were newly renovated with tasteful materials, staff immediately responded to our questions. Altogether, our stay was a great experience!Genuine Expedia guest review
Older hotel, room had no hair dryer. Breakfast buffet was $18.00 per person. Balcony view from room was very nice with a view of mauna kea & coconut island. Average hotel that could have been cleaner & more updated (carpet, etc.) Had a refrigerator & coffee pot in the room & that was it as far as amenities.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Dear Valued Guest: Aloha! Thank you for your review regarding you stay at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Please accept my apologies for failing to meet your expectations. We are currently under renovations to our guest rooms and hallways and it should be completed by the end of the month. We have a compendium placed on the bed to inform you of the amenities we offer at the hotel. We do have hair dryers available to you and I do apologize for failing to communicate this to you. "Good base for exploring SE of Big Island"
Nice clean basic hotel, friendly staff and mins from airport for helicopter tour of volcanoes. Free parking a plus and free shuttle to airport. Very helpful and knowledgeable tour desk staffGenuine Expedia guest review
"A super nice and reasonably priced hotel!!!"
Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. Fantastic ocean view, wonderful service, and extremely clean facility.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Old hotel being renovated"
We got stuck with a room next to the elevator and it was LOUD. room had been remodeled so the decor was updated which was OK. The Pool was COLD, with cold water running into to fill it. Not nice for a Hawaii swim.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Dear Valued Guest: Aloha! Please accept my humble apologies for failing to meet your expectations. I will have our elevators checked by our elevator company to see what is causing these noise concerns. As far as the water temperature in our swimming pool, I apologize for not having a heated pool. We live in the tropics with comfortable temperatures in the 70s to 90s and most guests prefer the natural temperatures of our waters. I will however speak to our owners for future consideration. My apologies again and I hope to be able to service you again on your next visit to our islands. Sincerely, General Manager
"Super clean affordable stay"
This place is a great find and worth more than what you will pay for it. The attached restaurant is top notch. Concierge is great at getting you set up with sightseeing and the seafacing balcony views are super. Room is very nice and comfortable and bathrooms clean. Wifi is a bit iffy - never could get it to work was the only negative.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Nice view of Hilo Bay"
Parking was somewhat difficult, but it was worth it. Employees were cheerful and were willing to assist with any issues. Hotel room walls are rather thin as you could hear conversations from adjacent rooms.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice Hotel"
We stayed for two nights during our drive around the island, we were put in a renovated room, and it was very nice! On par with full service Hilton's I have stayed at in the past. Very comfortable, right near town, and beautiful parks surround it on the Bay. It was inexpensive and there is some good, cheap eats within 5 minutes of the hotel by car.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good convenient Hotel for the $"
We are staying Kona and wanted to visit the Volcanos, so we only stayed 1 night I. Hilo. This Hotel was perfect for that. , Cheap price, ocean view with a balcony, clean room, a bit dated, and the Hotel is going through a renovation so lots of construction noise during the day. Not a problem, though, as we were out all day. Had a nice visit!Genuine Expedia guest review
We enjoyed our stay at the Hilo Hawaiian. Just one draw back. Do not park your vehicle under a tree. Sunday morning, our vehicle was bombarded with quite a lot of bird mess.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful view and a clean comfortable room"
We stayed 2 nights in one of the recently renovated rooms. We had a great view of the bay and park. The room was super clean and the staff was very friendly. There are a few restaurants within walking distance and it is about 1/2 hour away from the Volcanoes National Park. The amenities were a bit lacking for younger families; the pool was very basic, […] but it was right next to a great park. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice location but...."
I understand that renovations are taking place however the hotel was beyond noisy! From in the room you can hear EVERYTHING that is going on in the hallway, in the rooms next door and the rooms above. House keeping cleaning other rooms on the hall woke me up before 6am almost daily and the construction crew soon followed. I understand that they all […] have a job to do but how about a 9-5 job instead of a 6-2.... We seemed to have a few rooms with groups of younger guests that literally ran the hall until midnight. I might have gotten 5 hours of sleep a night, not what you want on a vacation. In addition the air conditioning in our room made the room musty and damp. It was much nicer to just leave the patio door open. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"The room they originally put us in had a/c issues"
once we reported the a/c issues, they sent a locksmith up to check it out, not a maintenance worker. He could not fix the issue. He went downstairs and came back up and said he got us a different room. We were never contacted by the hotel with an apology or any acknowledgement of the room condition. And, to have the locksmith working on an a/c was […] absurd. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good hotel in a good location"
We've stayed here before and liked it then, so a return trip to Hilo put this at the top of our list. Right next to the beautiful Liluokalani Gardens and a half hour drive to the National Park.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"nice view and convenience location"
hotel is old and dated but consider clean. no wifi in room only wifi in lobby. staff is nice. walking distance to coconut island. we take a walk every day after dinner. the view is great.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hotel room was old, ie 30+ years old. Everything smelled like mold and carpets were dirty and stained. Carpets were so dirty you needed to where shoes to cross it. The beds were about 20 years passed their prime, I still have an acking back days later. I would not recommend staying here to anyone. In general I would skip Hilo and just drive from the […] Kona side in the future. A number of people had told us that the drive was bad, but it would not have been bad enough to make up for a proper hotel. The Hotel is refurbishing a couple floors, but we didn't get one of those rooms. Only one ice machine worked in whole hotel. My kids called some of the stains in the hallway, blood stains. The DNA tests are still out, but they may be right. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"A bit run down"
The hotel is rather run down, though they seem to be making extensive renovations. The room was clean and comfortable, but pretty basic. The restaurant (where I had breakfast) was really bad, unfortunately. The locale is nice, overlooking Hilo Bay and right next to Queen Liliuokalani Gardens. For Hilo it seems to be a standard sort of venue.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Dear Valued Guest: Aloha! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts regarding your recent stay at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. We are always open to and appreciate honest and open reviews from all of our guests. Yes, we are currently in the refreshing stages of our guest rooms and corridors. The rooms are beautiful and we have received many nice compliments regarding our efforts. In a couple of weeks we will have reached the halfway point of our guest room refreshing and by the end of October we should be completed. I do apologize for failing to meet your expectations in our Queen’s Court Restaurant. I will speak to the F&B Manager and Executive Chef to see how we can improve. Thank you again and I hope you are able to visit our islands again in the near future. Sincerely, General Manager

"Nice hotel on Hilo Bay"
Very comfortable hotel room. Open air lobby and a great bar and restaurant connected to the lobby with a view of the ocean. Hotel is undergoing renovations on some of the upper floors as of May 2013, but we were not bothered by noise or dust on the third floor. We would stay there again, especially when the renovations are completed.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great value, close to airport, would recommend."
Really good value for the location. Easy to get to as we came from Kona side and stayed there to be near the Hilo airport, which was VERY close. Would definitely recommend it and would stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
As an Island Local, I was embarrassed at the condition of the Castle Hilo Hawwaiian Hotel! I stayed at another Castle property in Waimea, Big Island, & there was literally no difference between what the Castle Hilo Hawaiian offered in there rooms to what was offered at the Castle Kamuela Lodge! The room cleanliness was disgusting, the outdated run-down […] decor was a joke & even some of the staff made the hotel look bad. As I was checking-out, the Cashier behind the desk was courteous and helped me immediately but there was an older gentleman from, I could only guess, Housrkeeping, as he had a broom and dust pan, just standing at the corner of the desk near the Cashier & just "talking story" & not doing any work! I could tell that the Cashier was a little uncomfortable as he just stood there & continued to speak to her while she was helping me! Unbelievable behavior of a staff member! Anyway, unless the Hotel goes through a major renovation (including some of the staff), I believe I will be staying with the Naniloa or one of the new Bed & Breakfast properties & not the Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel! Response by Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Dear Valued Guest: Aloha and Mahalo for your review. Please accept my apologies for any deficiency you experienced during your recent visit to the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and the unfavorable perception of our facilities. As you have suggested, we are currently undergoing a refreshment of our guest rooms and corridors. Our second completed floor will be released next week. All of our rooms should be completed by the end of October of this year. As far as the employee concern, I will speak to both the housekeeping and bell managers to make sure this stops immediately. Again, Mahalo for sharing your experiences with us and I hope you will be able to stop by on your next visit and enjoy what our Owners have created for all of our valued guests like you. We use this hotel as a stop b4 we fly out 2 Honolulu 4m Hilo. The staff s very accomadating & friendly, we usually get the room w a view of Hilo bay, very romantic. The Resturant on site s nice w a Hawaiian feel, however we eat there 4 dinner only on week nights as they can b pricey (but good) on weekends. Nice placeGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"fantastic personal care"
We arrived late and they were amazingly courteous and kind to us. The next morning we needed to get our rental car, and they took us back to the airport at no charge and would not accept a tip. I would love to go back and stay longer.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It was close to airport and tour bus pick up. There were places to eat. We were in for one night, having come from Kauna'i to the Big Island for the volcano tour. Rooms were not where I would want to spend days.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Outdated and Odd"
This hotel was being renovated while we stayed there, which it definitely needs, however, I wish we were not staying during the renovation. The first morning we were greeted at 7am with a phone call informing us that they were shutting off our water in an hour...which is right around the time we were planning to get up and take showers etc. It would […] be great if the hotel could try to wait until the middle of the day when people are not sleeping to do this. Secondly, our room did not have power to half of it. It was really dim in the room and many of the lights did not work. We also noticed that they had signs up saying that they only serviced the room every four days (so two people get two towels for four days?! No thanks!) We requested extra towels and received them but I would recommend that the hotel service with fresh towels at least every two days or provide more towels. Lastly, the hours that the restaurants are open are ridiculous. If hotel guests are out late hiking in volcanoes national park, naturally they are going to return hungry after 8-9pm. Can't the bar at least stay open until 11pm? The hours at the pool also seemed very limited (only open until 7pm), but after looking at the actual pool, no one probably wants to swim in it anyways. How about update your pool, clean it, and provide a hot tub for hotel guests? We enjoyed Hilo itself very much and our entire trip was amazing. This hotel however, was not so amazing. Response by Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Dear Valued Guest: Aloha! Please accept my apologies for any deficiency you experienced and the unfavorable perception of our facilities. Yes we are under a refreshing stage for our guest rooms and corridors. This process started in April and should be completed in October. I am sure you will be pleased with the results and I do apologize for any inconveniences this refreshing process has caused. I will speak to the construction manager as work was approved from 8:30am – 5:00pm. They should not have inconvenienced you at 7:00am. My apologies again. As you know Hilo is a sleepy little town without enough patronage for any Food & Beverage operation to stay open after 9:00pm. In fact there is only one restaurant in Hilo that opens for 24 hours, majority except for Jack in the Box or McDonalds with their drive through closes by 9:00pm. I will however share this review with my Food & Beverage Team and see how we can provide longer service. Please take care and thanks again for sharing your experiences with us. Sincerely, General Manager

"Decent hotel with nice staff."

I was never told about making reservations at the hotel buffet when i checked-in on saturday. So for dinner, we went to eat since everything nearby was closed anyway, but the restaurant hostess didnt let us in coz they are booked fully. I complained that to the hotel receptionist but all she said was "ooh sorry." Room was a mediocre standard hotel room, […] not many amenities, simple. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very well run hotel with a few years on her."
This is the only hotel in Hilo I stay in when I visit my son at the university. It is vintage 60's (late "Madmen") that has been maintained well and was just starting a major update on my last visit. The staff is friendly and helpful. The seafood buffet attracts lots of local families and is a fresh as any dockside Poke shack. This is a part of the […] islands where "grown not flown" is very strong, but the people who work here truly offer the Aloha spirit. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Good for overnight"
View extraordinary - Coconut Island. Rooms could use some updating but okay. Front desk gave us key to wrong room - embarrassing. We were there only one night so were unable to use any facilities. Did have breakfast in the dining room - very good.Genuine Expedia guest review
Everything was great about the hotel, but the trees outside of our windows were filled with really REALLY loud birds that kept us awake most of the night. Even though the hotel is great, I don't think I would stay here again unless I was on the water side of the hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Things to be aware of at Castle Hilo"
The hotel is in a great location by the bay and has wonderful views. It also provides free parking and has a pool. Otherwise, there is a charge for everything else. There was no microwave in our room, and we were told that it would cost $10 a day to have one brought to the room. There is no iron or blow dryer provided in the rooms like what you normally […] see at other hotels. The hotel offers wi-fi for internet service, however you cannot access it in your room unless you pay $10 a day. You can, however, access the free wi-fi if you go to the lobby of the hotel. The room also smelled of mold. The front desk people in the lobby were dismissive and not in the spirit of good customer service. People in Hawaii are generally very nice and easygoing and this was the only place I experienced such attitudes. I have to say I would not go back to this hotel, and would seek accommodations elsewhere on my next trip. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Response by Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Dear Valued Guest: Aloha! Please accept my apologies for any deficiencies experienced during your recent visit. The hotel is a bit old but the youngest of all of the hotel on Banyan Drive. We will be undergoing renovations to our guest rooms and corridors which will be completed in October of 2013 which will refresh our hotel for our valued guest like you. In the past few years, the owners have spent lots of money refreshing the banquet rooms, foyer, restaurant, lounge, painting of the building, etc. Now is is the guest rooms that will be getting the needed attention. n Hilo is a very special place and I hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you again and regain your confidence. "Close to harbour"
Enjoyed our stay. Food was good but a touch high for some items. Seafood was fresh and lots of it.. Make sure you pay the extra $10 for the harbour side, which comes with a fridge. No fridge in other rooms and no free InternetGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Overall gross hotel"
I'm not too impressed with our stay at this hotel. We upgraded to a "superior" room and our view included the lobby rooftop which was covered in used tissues. The room itself had popcorn ceilings and wallpaper peeling off the wall. They also charge $10 a day to use their wifi. This hotel was definitely not worth the $150 per night we paid. On the plus […] side, the location is beautiful. The ocean is right out the window and a beautiful park with Japanese gardens and banyan trees is right there. I guess I just expected more for the price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Hotel and staff surpassed expectations...negative reviews I had read proved to be unfounded...the staff, the bay view, cleaniness, etc. were better than good...I would stay here again...the hotel ifself is a little outdated, but it was hardly noticed with the ocean views and sitting on the balcony...drink in hand...really couldn't be any better...we […] stayed 8 nights and would have liked to stay longer...I would say if you have a beautiful wife...a warm breeze...drink in hand...view of the bay...I could not have wanted for more...just like to say thanks...for a vacation of a lifetime...now if I can just plan to do it again...
