Everything was great about the hotel, but the trees outside of our windows were filled with really REALLY loud birds that kept us awake most of the night. Even though the hotel is great, I don't think I would stay here again unless I was on the water side of the hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Things to be aware of at Castle Hilo"
The hotel is in a great location by the bay and has wonderful views. It also provides free parking and has a pool. Otherwise, there is a charge for everything else. There was no microwave in our room, and we were told that it would cost $10 a day to have one brought to the room. There is no iron or blow dryer provided in the rooms like what you normally […] see at other hotels. The hotel offers wi-fi for internet service, however you cannot access it in your room unless you pay $10 a day. You can, however, access the free wi-fi if you go to the lobby of the hotel. The room also smelled of mold. The front desk people in the lobby were dismissive and not in the spirit of good customer service. People in Hawaii are generally very nice and easygoing and this was the only place I experienced such attitudes. I have to say I would not go back to this hotel, and would seek accommodations elsewhere on my next trip. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Hilo was lovely"
We did not get to see a lot of the hotel, we checked in late in the day and left early for a full day of activities. The front desk staff was very friendly. Good experience and would recommend this hotel. We found Hilo a lovely place.Genuine Expedia guest review

Response by Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Dear Valued Guest: Aloha! Please accept my apologies for any deficiencies experienced during your recent visit. The hotel is a bit old but the youngest of all of the hotel on Banyan Drive. We will be undergoing renovations to our guest rooms and corridors which will be completed in October of 2013 which will refresh our hotel for our valued guest like you. In the past few years, the owners have spent lots of money refreshing the banquet rooms, foyer, restaurant, lounge, painting of the building, etc. Now is is the guest rooms that will be getting the needed attention. n Hilo is a very special place and I hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you again and regain your confidence. Sincerely, General Manager
"Close to harbour"
Enjoyed our stay. Food was good but a touch high for some items. Seafood was fresh and lots of it.. Make sure you pay the extra $10 for the harbour side, which comes with a fridge. No fridge in other rooms and no free InternetGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Overall gross hotel"
I'm not too impressed with our stay at this hotel. We upgraded to a "superior" room and our view included the lobby rooftop which was covered in used tissues. The room itself had popcorn ceilings and wallpaper peeling off the wall. They also charge $10 a day to use their wifi. This hotel was definitely not worth the $150 per night we paid. On the plus […] side, the location is beautiful. The ocean is right out the window and a beautiful park with Japanese gardens and banyan trees is right there. I guess I just expected more for the price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Nice view if you take a room facing the ocean. The hotel staff and rooms are good, the restaurent is little expensive. Internet did not work wellGenuine Expedia guest review
Hotel and staff surpassed expectations...negative reviews I had read proved to be unfounded...the staff, the bay view, cleaniness, etc. were better than good...I would stay here again...the hotel ifself is a little outdated, but it was hardly noticed with the ocean views and sitting on the balcony...drink in hand...really couldn't be any better...we […] stayed 8 nights and would have liked to stay longer...I would say if you have a beautiful wife...a warm breeze...drink in hand...view of the bay...I could not have wanted for more...just like to say thanks...for a vacation of a lifetime...now if I can just plan to do it again... The hotel is serviceable. The shower had mildew stains in the grout, which is unsurprising for Hilo, but still....Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Was ok hotel. Expensive restaurant on premise. Comfortable king bedGenuine Expedia guest review
The downstairs lobby is pretentious and the carpets in the halls leading to the rooms seemed shabby. But our room was fine. Overall, a fair value. However, we chose to avoid the promotional deals for eating there, based on a review in a book I found otherwise reliable. Amenities seemed overpriced. The hotel is old and needs upgrade. The worst part for us was that we were provided a room on the third floor just above the hotel bar! The loud music started at 8pm and continued nearly until midnight! we had to call TWICE before the loud music was turned off. we requested a room change in case the music was not turned off! "Can't really tell if it's not clean or just old..."
Can't really tell if it's not clean or just old. Overall it's an okay hotel. Since there are not too many options in Hilo anyways, I'm sure this one is still more acceptable than the others.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Adjust your expectations."
The site is outstanding, in a large, well-kept park-garden, facing the bay and ocean. The staff is fine, the food service OK, and lobby and grounds excellent. However, it is not a new hotel and you will find mold (in moderation, but very obvious) in various places such as the bathroom, the HVAC vents, etc. The halls have a distinct odor, not disgusting, […] but far from fresh - presumably the air circulation is not great. To some extent this is a common defect in Hilo buildings, especially older ones. The hotel really needs to be stripped to the bones and rebuilt. Unfortunately the room rates are not reduced to correspond to the condition. But the choices are limited, and I continue to stay there when I need to stay in Hilo. "Three star budget hotel"
This is definitely a budget hotel. The hotel staff is inattentive. The bellman spends his time on his cellphone sending text messages, and the Front Desk staff does not even greet you or acknowledge you when you while you wait in line. The wait staff at the breakfast buffet is equally disinterested in guests. Hilo is not a tourist town, so I was not […] surprised, as the staff of every restaurant and shop we went too seemed indifferent. This hotel is a bit worn out, but so are all the hotels in the area. If you do not care about hanging out at the hotel, this place is fine. The beds are stiff, but everything is clean. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Soggy and Icky"
Lobby was okay, but room is rediculously out of date. 80's wallpaper peeling at seams, damaged drywall, no frig, no iron or board, no hair dryer. very icky vibe. cute park and bay is nice. no beach, rains all the time. greeted at front desk by man wearing tank top underwear shirt. Ive heard this is best hotel in town, but NOT a place to vacation.Genuine Expedia guest review
Nice area around hotel for walk or run. Right on bay. Near airport and easy to find. Good food and good service. Large room for the price. Very satisfied.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"stuck in 90s, thin walls; poor quality/price ratio"
Most disappointing? Thin walls. With neighbors on each side, we either heard one's TV or the other's phone conversations...crisply...and neither were trying to be loud. It just seemed like the walls were hollow. I'm not sure sleep would have come so easily if I wasn't tired from a long day. Decor was stuck in the early 90s. Felt like nothing but the […] LCD TV had been changed in two decades. Another gripe - the water pressure in the shower was near nonexistent. For the price, this property did not meet expectations. The hotel has great potential but it is old and it shows.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Beautiful setting, w/large rooms, great ocean views, & conveniently located w/in walking distance to several restaurants. The landscaping is well-groomed but it’s clear the facility is aging, badly. The staff was courteous, professional & attentive. The in-room coffee was good, exactly as you would expect on Kona. The hotel has Wi-Fi in the lobby, but […] in the rooms you’re stuck with Ethernet cable for about $11 a day. Beyond that, it gets worse. My both bed sheets & towels felt cheap & threadbare, the pillows (I had only two on a king size bed) should have been retired long ago, interior painted surfaces are dingy, carpet is worn out & the cabinetry, furniture, plumbing & lighting fixtures are all extremely outdated & worn. In fact the overall decor reminds me of those kitschy Miami Vice-80's-era pastels & is desperately in need of renovation. That said, there really aren't any other good options in town so this property like the others sadly has no incentive to invest in improvements. Perhaps this is why their hotel room rates are so reasonable, compared to other cities in Hawaii? If you care more about a convenient location in a beautiful setting w/ nice staff & clean & affordable rooms than you do nice appointments & aesthetics, this is a good choice for you; it's not like you have a lot of choices in this town, so if you truly want a first-class facility & can spare a 3 Hour Drive to Kona (or an $80 flight,) that may be worth well the trouble. "Excellent base for Big Island exploration."
All of the hotels in Hilo Bay appear fairly dated, but I think this is the best of them. The staff were helpful and friendly. The restaurant serves a great buffet breakfast that will give a filling start to the day, with plenty of fresh fruit available as well as the usual items. If I have a criticism, it is the houskeeping service which was quite hit […] or miss.. some days the room was cleaned, other days the bed was made and that's about all (bathroom not cleaned, coffee not replaced etc). If I was to come to Hilo again, this is the place I would stay. The covered parking area was useful as it rains a lot here! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Must get a room on the ocean side of the hotel! The difference in price will make your stay more enjoyable. One of the best views in the world!!!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good View, but Watch Out!"
Getting an ocean view room is worth it--and the staff was helpful when we decided to upgrade to one. But they don't tell you that the dinner and breakfast buffets are VERY overpriced. And the $10 fee for internet service was a complete waste--it went down so often that it was essentially useless. So enjoy the room, but avoid the extra costs.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel for the price."
Great location and nice views. Restaurant was excellent and priced quite reasonably. Rooms were more than adequate. The only thing wrong was that the TV didn't work, but I wasn't going to watch anyway so it was no big deal.Genuine Expedia guest review
"would stay there again"
We are wheelchair users. Our room was accessible and easy to move around in. The room was clean and with all the basics provided...plenty of towels-pillows-blankets/cups-bucket/shampoo, etc. We were sad to not have a fridge/microwave though. The restaurant/buffet and bar within the hotel were good albeit pricey. I would stay there again. The location […] and view of the ocean from the balcony was beautiful. "Nice hotel for a family"
The hotel has a great ambiance. The restaurant had inexpensive breakfast options.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Superior to what?"
A "superior" room means that it is superior to the basement, but not a whole lot. I did feel chearted by that. It was slightly better than Motel 6 and the bed was comfortable. The TV didn't really work very well, but one doesn't visit Hawaii to watch TV. Yiou just have to understand what you are getting in to; it's a tourist trap.Genuine Expedia guest review
"close to volcano national park and mauna kea"
The Castle Hilo Hawaiian is one of the better hotels in Hilo. In general, all the hotels in Hilo are older and not up to date compared with the ones in Kona. "Old decor, decent location"
We stayed here 4 nights in mid-December. We chose it for the location and were happy with how easy it was to get around. Yes, it is old & the decor is tired. However, the beds were decent, the parking is free, and it was clean. The cafe that is next to the Queen's Buffet (or whatever it was called) had some really good petite treats for breakfast that […] I was happy to pay for (fruit tarts were delicious). The lobby gets very busy because that is where the wifi is free. My only complaint stems from when I needed to book my 4th night. We had actually checked out after 3 nights and went to stay at the volcano national park. Due to unacceptable conditions there, I called around 8 PM and asked if they had rooms left. The gentleman said there were probably 20 rooms left and to come on back. So, we drove back to get a room. The young lady behind the desk told me they didn't have any rooms WITHOUT looking at her computer. She just kept shaking her head saying there was no availability. I finally said, "I just called 45 minutes ago and was told you had 20 rooms." Then, she checked her computer and found 7 room available. She got us booked and we stayed another night. Overall, if I was to go back to that island I would stay there again. The farmer's market downtown on Wednesdays and Saturdays was quite fun to walk through and was where we bought all our unique souvenirs and gifts. The Banyan trees are gorgeous. The gardens next door are also quite nice. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
