The glorious medieval core remains a itrecento/i masterpiece, cascading down three hills from the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo. The Hotel Italia is a nice hotel close to the train station. We did not see the city from this hotel-we were going straight to rent a car, so I can't speak to the walking distance to the old city, but we were told it was an easy walk. Our complaints about this place were that the walls were thin and it was a bit noisy. We were on the third floor. The pillows were the hardest we encountered in Italy. The best thing about this hotel is the staff. They could not have been nicer and more willing to help.

I chose this hotel for its value, close location to the city and facilities. Although the location was within walking distance to the city centre (20 minutes) and the room (economy) was equipped with a safe, fridge etc, the room was very basic and not that comfortable. The bed linen was old and frayed and there were marks on the wall. I must say however that the bathroom was very clean and modern. The breakfast room was lovely with a good selection of food (cereals, juices, cakes, croissants, eggs and sausages at weekend) and good coffee. The service at front desk was also very good and all the staff were very pleasant. This somewhat made up for the quality of the room. I am not very fussy when it comes to hotel rooms and still enjoyed my stay at the hotel but I would not stay here again. Perhaps the superior rooms are better but I think there are more hotels closer to the centre that I would choose over this one.

We arrived in Siena after sunset. Our Garmin GPS running City Navigator Europe Version 8 sent us down the wrong way on a one way street as soon as we entered the city, then lost our position when the streets became narrower and twistier. We could not have reached Hotel Italia in these conditions without asking for directions. Still, this hotel may be the only one within easy walking distance of the town center that offers free parking. Although the actual number of off-street parking spaces belonging to the hotel is no more than half a dozen or so (these are really just tiny pockets formed between the narrow drive way behind the hotel and projections from the walls of the buildings on either side - there is no room to turn even for a small car - you have to carefully back your way out of the obstacle course if all the spaces are taken). You are better off parking on the street just beyond the drive way. The room we first checked into was in disarray. It turned out that one of their cleaning ladies was sick that day, and something got mixed up when the cleaning duties were reassisgned. We were given a free upgrade to an available "Superior Room", which was much roomier and more elegantly decorated, so it actually worked out for us. Wireless internet was not free, but sold in hourly blocks; which we found was common practice in Italy. Leaving was much easier, as we were headed to Florence next, we just had to stay on the road in front of the hotel.

for starters: if you are going to walk to the hotel from the train station, please pay attention: 1)get a map from the tourist office at the station and have them outline the route; 2) when you make a left onto the first street... it is not really a street, it's a dirt path... follow the dirt path all the way to the top... the path then runs into a road... follow that to the top and you are right in front of the hotel. not hard to find, but a little difficult uphill walk on dirt. if you have roller luggage, take the bus in. the location is just outside the walls of siena... but within a 3 minute walk. it's very nicely located just outside the walls. siena is not very big, so anything close is good enough. i recommend renting a car and driving the "22" up to chiante for some wine tasting at the wineries. my wife and i did it on a whim and it was interesting... the views were awesome. neither of us speak any italian and it was still really easy to get around. the hotel itself was ok. not grand, but not garbage either. there is no air conditioning, but there was a fan in the room. and the room had a nice balconey. the room was small, but clean. also, there was not as much noise as i originally thought there would be considering it is on a major street. lastly, if you want a canole, get one before you get to siena. they have no idea what they are.

We stayed at Hotel Italia for two nights. We arrived via train, and chose the hotel because it was well priced and close to the train station. The hotel was a bit more dated then some of the others we stayed in on our trip, and didn't have a lot of charm to it's decor, but it was clean and comfortable and the rooms and bathrooms were a good size. It was a bit of a walk to the center of town, but the location allowed us to be closer to more cost effective dining options. The walk into the main part of the city was not bad at all, and there was a bus station right near the hotel. The staff was helpful. We booked a day excursion from the hotel - there were several options. Breakfast was pretty good too.

Even with a fourth floor room not facing the street, we still had difficulty sleeping due to all the noise from the street below. This room was much louder than our rooms in Rome, Florence, or Venince during recent Italy trip. This hotel is 25-30 minutes walk from Il Campo, and was a 10 Euro cab ride from train station. Tourists should try another hotel closer to the main sites (Il Campo and the Duomo). Hotel decor in the room looks like something out of the old Soviet Union (dull gray furniture). I will give this hotel bonus points for having whole wheat breads at their breakfast. It was the only whole grain we saw during entire 2 weeks in Italy.

This was absolutely the nicest hotel we stayed in during our trip to Italy. The room was large, comfortable, and very nicely decorated. The bathroom was quite nice. A lot of care went into the hotel's decor. Breakfast was excellent. The staff was fabulous, spoke English well and went out of their way to be helpful. The one negative was that the hotel was quite a distance to the historic center of Siena - it was a good half hour walk along a busy roadway. Also, though it appears close to the railway station on a map, we still had to take a cab - it was further than it looked. I guess if you travel light the distance to the train would be walkable but we always seem to over-pack! All-in-all, I would definitely recommend this hotel.

I arrived in Siena by car during the summer of 2008 while doing research for my website and was pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel had some on site parking as well as ample nearby, legal, street parking. The hotel itself was large for an Italian hotel in this price range. The staff that was somewhat curt but helpful. My room was quite large and very clean. They put out a very nice and large traditional Italian breakfast buffet (no bacon and eggs folks!). For the price, I would consider these accommodations a real bargain for an Italian hotel. The one drawback was that the location is somewhat far from the center of town, requiring a walk of at least 15 minutes (20 is probably more accurate). Still, it is an interesting walk, and worth putting up with if you consider the price for a room nearer the center of town.
