I stayed at the St James Hotel for four nights with seven friends and had a fabulous time. The hotel was a little 'tired' but was spotlessly clean. The rooms were adequate with new bathrooms, a TV and air conditioning. A couple of our party were unhappy with their room as it was on the small side (for four people), the hotel staff were very obliging and moved them to a larger room the next day. The hotel's lifts were slightly temperamental and we did have to wait a while but it wasn't a problem. The main advantage of this hotel is it's proximity to Time Square, we could not believe how close we were to all the action and for such a reasonable price. The hotel is located next to two great deli's and two Irish bars, across the street are two good restaurants, so after a hard day sightseeing you don't have to walk far for your evening meal/drink.

Unlike many places that say they are near Times Square this hotel actually was. Although very basic, it was clean and the staff were accommodating, but not as far as friendly. As it was our honeymoon, had this hotel not been paid for in advance we would probably have gone somewhere else, but only for the romance value! It was clean and comfortable but shabby. The hotel reception looks like it has had money spent and there was work going on in certain floors so maybe it's having a refurb. It would be worth keeping an eye on as the rooms are large and it would make a lovely boutique hotel, if someone spent the money!

The Hotel St James New York City has a good location if you seek to stay near Times Square. Although the hotel room was reasonably clean it is very small and can be very hot in the Summer. Little things were iritating like my husband getting locked in the bathroom as the door knob didn't function properly (had to wait 20 min for someone to break him out...), borrowing a working hair dryer took three attempts and supplied internet connection facility charges were very expensive. On a positive note the Cranberry Cafe/Deli next door was great for getting tea/coffee and food for the room if desired.

Having never been to New York before, I thought that Times Square would be a "square" with grass in the middle! How wrong was I! This hotel was very conveniently placed for shops, Central Park, Broadway, etc. It was also very reasonably priced compared to other hotels in the centre of Manhattan. We had a family room with 2 doubles in it that faced the front street. It was a bit noisy but no where near how bad it could've been! The air conditioning worked but was also noisy. The other windows in the room looked over the middle of the hotel and as we were on the 2nd floor and it went up quite high (surrounded by other tall buildings), it appeared like the world had died out there!! The room was cleaned both days and fresh towels put in the bathroom. The TV had the usual channels with poor reception on some of them. The staff on reception itself were "non-committal", ie they weren't rude but not friendly either. It was definitely a place to rest your head and more for convenience than anything else. There was a good deli next door and a theatre down the street. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and would stay there again.

Sixty seconds from 7th Avenue & Times Square, you'd be hard pushed to find a more conveniently located hotel for the same money. The staff were helpful and the other guests an amicable mix of couples, families and student groups. On a less positive note, the lift is a real pain especially if you get allocated a room on the 10th floor. Doh! The room was very clean and refreshed every day although due to its age and condition the place lacked any sound-proofing. Ceramic earplugs are recommneded unless you can sleep through the constant hub-bub of the City that never sleeps! I would stay again but will probably pay a bit more next time and try somewhere else.

Nothing comes cheap in Manhatten but here you're getting a good deal for your money. Nothing fancy but clean and well run. One of the two lifts seemed constantly out of order but my children preferred to run up to the 7th floor anyway leaving the elevator to those with luggage or less energy. There's a great deli right next door which serves a good range of food from breakfast to dinner. The Hotel also has a seating area downstairs where you can eat your sandwiches if you prefer. I would definitely go back!

Our room was quite basic (no tea making facilities) but clean with maid service every day. There were cafes next door for food and drinks which was great. Best breakfast was served at Evergreens Cafe 2 blocks up on 47th Street. We had an added bonus of a street market on our street on the Saturday morning when we woke and all was cleaned away come the evening. If I was to go back to NY I would book this hotel again :-)

Although the location of the hotel was very good, we were not very impressed with the room: very noisy air-conditioning, saw no daylight, a couple of creepy crawleys (probably cockroaches) in the bathroom, no face flannels, bed not properly made with bedcover. There was also a lot of noise during the night from very noisy guests. Had to wait for the elevator a long time as the second one was constantly out of use. Although the tour, theatre etc. desk was probably not run by the hotel, we would like to complain about the lack of service - we had booked the shuttle to JFK for 5 p.m. on 14th April, but when it still had not turned up at 5.15 p.m. and we made enquiries from the girl at the desk, she made a phonecall and started giving our money back. Only when we asked what was happening, she said that the booking had not been put through and that the shuttle was not coming. No suggestion of what to do next. "Just take a taxi from outside". No offer of help at all, totally not interested. You should warn your guests that this can happen. We only just made it for checking-in time. We will certainly not recommend the hotel to any of our friends!

St James Hotel West 45th Street has the advantages of being in central Manhatten and near all the big sites, theatres and shopping outlets. It is also quite cheap by city centre hotel standards. However, the hotel itself has some problems. Only one lift was working and then intermittently. There is no bellhop service. So be prepared to hump your bags up to 11 floors. The plumbing facilities in our room were poor, a leaky cistern and a malfunctioning plug. Hot water was not always on tap. I overheard other guests complaining of similar problems. On the plus side the beds were comfortable and the room servicing was very good - fresh towels every day, room spick and span. The front desk staff were not overly helpful. Frankly, they did not seem to be bothered with the guests. However, one young lady on the concierge was extremely good, helping us find our way around and phoning up for reservations. Overall, a mixture maxture of a hotel, probably better suited to a younger clientelle who are prepared to rough it for a few nights.

Would have been nice to have had coffee making facility in room. There was no information about the Hotel in the room, no idea of TV channels, whether hair dryer available etc. There were only 2 small lifts and 1 was being rebuilt. Glad we were only on 2nd floor. I and my partner stayed 4 nights in this hotel, what can I say, I don?t really have anything bad to say about it. The location was absolutely fantastic you step out of the front of this hotel turn right and walk about 150 yds and you are there on Times Square, end of the block you have Planet Hollywood. Starbucks across the street, 2 Irish pubs both serving food and one had live bands on 3 nights out of our 4 night stay, Also two Deli next door to the Hotel which was great for those late night snacks. Also try their cheesecake it is to die for. We stayed in room 1105 the décor was a bit outdated but clean and tidy and a good size room, the bathroom again dated but it was cleaned everyday and we had clean towels everyday also. Our room faced to the front of the hotel, which was quite noisy in the mornings, but who wants to be in bed when you are in NYC. I think my only problem with the hotel and not really a problem but it niggled me was the lifts, 1 wasn?t working and the other took for age to come and then would stop on the 2nd floor every time no matter whether you were going up or down. But I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to friends. TIP: We found to get hot water we had to turn on the shower and let it run for about 5 mins after that no problems.

Only criticism of this hotel really were the lifts (or rather the lift!). We stayed on the 12th floor, and the lift took AGES to get to the correct floor so that we could get in! The other lift was out of order for the full duration on our trip (although workmen were working on it just before we checked out). The staff were so good and very helpful but the poor guys happen to work in a bad hotel. The room we stayed in was clean but smelling weird. The cuilts were poor quality. And the heater was making a big knocking noise every few minutes that kept waking us up.I thought there is some maintenance going on at first.I complained but i didnt get a good responce. The location of the hotel is amazing though. Its close to the center of the city. I dont recommend this hotel to anybody. It does not worth what i paid.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel St. James this last week for 4 nights. As much money as the city costs and the cost of flights and all the things that we wanted to do while there, the last thing that we wanted to spend our money on was a hotel that we were basically needed a place to sleep and shower. That is what we got- no thrills and no frills. But we didn't need nor want that. Clean? yes. Unsanitary? no. Could I live there? no. Could I spend a couple nights there? yes. Would I stay there again? yes. All the staff was friendly, although the day desk guys didn't seem to like to be bothered. If you want a good and inexpensive place to stay I would recommend this place. If you want to have a bunch the thrills and frills then St. James is not the place for you. We had a great time in New York!

They say "you get what you pay for" but this wasn't really that cheap - maybe because it was the begining of the Holiday Season. The room was clean...but the bed linens were really beat...yuck! And guests need a bit more light to see by, unless maybe they are moles. No extra toothbrushes for sale? Not even a cup of coffeee to be had upon arising? BAD "AMENITIES"! (none) ...BAD SERVICE! I won't be back, even tho the location was great.

Old fashioned radiant heat, sdmall hole in bathroom door, deadbolts have been cut off, only one key per room so needed to turn in every time we left. Only outlet availabel was in bathroom so had issues with charging phones and such. Beautiful marbel bathroom but extremely weak water in shower. Ask for extra pillows since they are pretty wimpy. Right in the middle of everything. ONe block to Time Square, 3 -4 blocks from Radio City Music Hall, Top of the Rock and Center. NO amenties but great cafe next door with everything you can think of to eat. Parking can be a hassle. Parked on 43rd street and walked about 10 minutes (gargae across street is more expense. Just fine for our stay. ALL STAFF members very nice.

Aside from an error in our reservation on their part, which caused us to believe our personal belongings had been stolen. Asit turns out they moved them to a differant room. The rooms are lacking of the normal items, such as tissues, drinking glasses in the bathroom. and on the top floor where we ended up there was not enough water pressure to even form a spray out af the shower head. Understanding the rate paid these simple things should not be considered to much to expect.

The only good part was the location of the hotel. WE have missed our flight because of the concierge lady who recommended us to take a shuttle (which was the same price as of cab) .She was told exact departure time and she said we would make it ok. The bus driver was driving all over manhatten to pick up other guests from other places and obviously was in NO rush. We ended up getting off and getting the cab and spent additional 200$ , because of the CARELESS concierge services- what a shame..still waiting on call back. EXTREMELY POOR customer service all together.

The lobby was very nice. The price was amazing for the location. The rooms were nothing fancy - 2 beds, small bathroom, tv. But who needs fancy when you are in the center of Time Square!! The room was very clean - and thats all I really cared about. 2 little upsets - No clock in the room and having to hand over your key if you left the room vacant - because there was only 1 key per room. Those 2 cons would not hold me from going there again.

We rented it to visit Washington DC. About 15 - 20 minutes driving from the Capitol Hill. Very spacious and decent quality for the price. We have rented 2 studio suites for 9 people. The room is clean, the bathroom is good. It is a bit too crowded in the breakfast room, but they suggested us to get the food and bring back to our room, which we gladly accepted. The customer service is kinda so so for the area, though us people from Rocky Mountain are used to more smiling.

Hotel is extremely "OLD", smallest elevators in the world that creek and leave you wondering if they are certified operable. Room was dirty -floor never vacuumed and hair in the bathtub and toilet. Unable to control the room temperature. The noise level was unbearable and the TV placed on a wall were you had to crank your neck and or lay sideways in bed to watch. No way to sit comfortably to view television. Convenience is all this hotel has going for it - Also, if you have asthma; you will be gasping and gagging trying to go in/out of the hotel as they have all the smokers sitting at the front door instead of banishing them to the back of the hotel.

The location just off Times Square is absolutely perfect. First assigned room had plumbing problem in the bathroom, however the front desk staff courteously changed the room assignment with apologies. Hotel has a concierge which was a surprise as it is a small hotel with few amenities. Room was small, but had been recently renovated and was very clean and comfortable. Cable television worked perfectly. Surprisingly nice considering the location and price.

For the money, you can't beat the location. My room was clean and spare. TV worked. Bathroom recently updated, very clean. Shower temperature was good and consistent, but poor pressure. My main complaint was from strange mechanical noises. I'm not sure where it came from...perhaps the heat/ac system in a nearby room? It was periodic throughout the night and not attributable to neighboring occupants. Even so, I would definitely stay here again if the price is right, because you can't beat the location. Convenient to all theaters, Rockefeller center, subway, shopping, MOMA...
