The room was not very clean. Service desk was poorly maintained, and at one point had no one who could even understand English. The hotel is located under the elevated train so if you're looking for peace and quiet, you may want to reconsider. The price was extremely reasonable, but we at least expected a clean bathroom with clean towels.

This was the worst experience I've ever had at any hotel and I travel alot. It was dirty, there were bugs in the room, prostitutes in the lobby, people making all kinds of crazy noises all night thru the hallways, and the linens had stains all over them.I would never stay here again and I think the establishment should be closed or under new management and I will be reporting my experience to the Better Business Bureau.

Close proximity to the subway is a benefit and a curse - lots of noise! Better if you can stay in an odd-numbered room that is on the opposite side to the tracks. I heard there was prostitution activity here, but figured it couldn't be that obvious - wrong! Right as we were checking in a couple women came in asking to rent by the hour. All night doors were SLAMMING (mostly on Saturday night) and the noise was terrible. The neighborhood was marginal. I never felt unsafe, but it awareness of surroundings was critical. Although the subway stop is close, it requires navigating across several streets and can take some time - which isn't a good idea after dark in this area. The room itself (that we stayed in) was acceptable - clean enough, didn't see any bugs, and had working amenities. In the future, though, I would be willing to pay more for a better location and clientele.

pluses: less than a block from an elevated subway stop 3 blocks from the bronx zoo the rooms were pretty clean, no bedbugs! Minuses: Subway trains shake the room and can be noisy depending on which side of the hotel you are on. the neighborhood was scary after dark i could feel every spring in the mattress, plus they only had a sheet and the nasty comforter on the bed overall, you get what you pay for. Next time i am willing to shell out more money for something a bit better and closer to NYC.

I recently stayed at this Hotel for 4 days, I was traveling alone on a last minute trip. This hotel is not one I would recommend for families because of the area, but if you are going on a quick trip alone its a good value. It is located across the street from the West Farms subway station which gives you easy access to any point in NYC. The rooms were clean, but the hallways had a slight odor, probably due to the fact the carpet is soaked constantly around the vending and ice machines. The staff was friendly and easy to work with. Overall the trip was pleasant. If I had to do it over knowing what I do now, I would book a hotel across the river in Jersey. Its cheaper than NYC and only about a ten minute train ride away.

Well, I got there and check-in was quick and simple. I went to my room, and overall, it seemed to be what I expected. The bed was comfortable, that was about the only thing nice about the room. The TV on only had one channel, the bathroom door had no lock, and all I heard throughout the night was the train. The neighborhood isn't the best either. This is the first and last time I stay in this hotel.

It is overall a good hotel with a very friendly staff. The only thing that bothers is the noise of trains all night. It is so loud that i got up many times during my sleep. Maybe it was because my room was on the road side and facing the rail tracks above the road. Rest is ok. The rooms are comfortable, clean and the staff is friendly. If just provided with a room with no noise, it would be a great hotel to stay in.

When we first approached the hotel we were somewhat apprehensive b/c of the neighborhood. The staff does a great job of keeping the hotel clean, but it could use some updates. There is no elevator so if you are traveling with children or a lot of luggage, plan on several trips up and down the stairs. The carpet is somewhat worn and near the vending machines there was a leak of some sort so the carpet was soggy, but other than that, the hotel was great. If you are planning on using the subway, this is the perfect hotel. There are other comments that the subway is noisy b/c it's so close, but it didn't bother us at all, we slept perfectly. This hotel is literally right across the street from the West Farms E Tremont station and this was wonderful. The hotel has complimentary parking under video surveillance, so we parked our car when we arrived and used the subway the rest of the trip (hotel has free subway maps if you ask.) I would definitely stay at this hotel again. If you are looking for an inexpensive place to stay and are not concerned about luxury accomodations, this place is perfect.

The day we checked-in there was a flood on the first floor hallway and there did not appear to be any actions taken to get the water up. I could hear the water much noise under my feet. When it was time to go to bed I noticed that our bed had been made up with only one sheet. That meant that I would have to touch the comforter, with no bearer between me and the comforter everyone who every rented that room had touched. It was 10:30pm, I put my clothes back on and went to the front desk to ask for sheets. About 25 minutes later they maid came with the sheets. Twenty-five minutes may no seem long but when you have been traveling all day attend and event from 4:30 pm until 9:30pm, 25 minutes is a long time. The bed was not comfortable, and the train track ran down the street in front of the hotel. The trains run all night long in New York. I was half asleep all night. I will never stay in another Howard Johnson.

Negatives: This hotel is right under the elevated train run in the Bronx. This fact was not mentioned in the listing on hotels.com. I was pretty angry about that when I arrived at the hotel. The rooms are dated, the decor poorly trimmed out, the workmanship embarassing. There are no fans in the bathrooms. Some rooms have only beds- no chairs. There are no blankets on the beds- only bedspread and sheets. The front staff is not good with directions. Telephone books were 2 years old. Breakfast was bruised apples, cheap cupcakes, and stale cereal. Positives: Conveniently located by the subway stop (1/2 block). Parking lot is off the street and is monitored on security camera.

This was more a "motel" than a "hotel". It was conveniently located directly underneath the subway. Loiterers (non-guests that just hang around the hotel) were a problem. Our "non-smoking" room reeked of smoke. Parking was available and free if you had a car (but who needs a car in NY, right?). It is an ok place if you just need somewhere to lay your head but there is definitely nothing fancy about this place.

This hotel's location (within walking distance of the Bronx Zoo) is its strength and its greatest weakness. Any room located on the front side of the building will feature thundering subway noise all night long. Also, the walls are not thick enough to prevent hearing a lot of noise from neighboring rooms. That said, the building was in more or less the expected condition for the price and the room was clean and well-prepared. And if you need to roll out of bed and get to the Bronx Zoo several minutes later right as it is opening at 10am, you may not have a better choice.

After putting up the do no disturb sign we came back after a day in the city to find that our bathroom had been cleaned and someone had indeed cleaned the room. The staff made us feel slightly unwelcome for the entire stay.
